Verrazano Dominates in Haskell (cont. from p1) Breaking from the outside in the seven-horse field,John Velazquez and Verrazano angled towards the railand took up a stalking position just to the outside of GIPreakness S. winner Oxbow (Awesome Again) throughan opening quarter in:23 4/5. Oxbowsnuck loose downthe backstretch, buthis advantage wasshort-lived asVerrazano moved tochallenge after aleisurely half-mile in:48 1/5. Given hiscue by Velazquezafter three-quartersin 1:12 2/5, theeven-money favoriteinhaled thepacesetter andstormed clear down the lane. AWe had the perfect trip,@ Velazquez said. AHe wasincredible today. When I asked him, he was right there. He was in a perfect spot and Gary Stevens=s horse wasmoving easily, so I moved him out to the middle of thetrack so no one could keep me pinned in. It looked likehe was going a little slow on the lead, so I went up toput a little pressure on him. Power Broker moved at usa little and my horse just took off.@

Oxbow finished fourth and jockey Gary Stevensdismounted shortly after crossing the wire, but the coltwalked off the track under his own power. Accordingto Daily Racing Form, x-rays of Oxbow=s right ankleshowed no fractures, but the colt may have suffered asoft-tissue injury. Verrazano showed promise right from the start, earning J “TDN Rising Star” J status with a 7 3/4-length debut win at Gulfstream Jan. 1. He captured theGII Tampa Bay Derby in just his third start and stampedhimself as a favorite forthe GI Kentucky Derbywith a win in the Apr.6 GI Wood Memorial. He suffered his first, and only loss to date, when 14th over asloppy Churchill trackin the Derby, but herebounded with anemphatic 9 1/4-lengthvictory in Monmouth=sGIII Pegasus S. June 16. The strapping bay will now be aimed at a divisionalshowdown with Saturday=s GII Jim Dandy winner andstablemate Palace Malice (Curlin). AHe=ll ship to Saratoga tomorrow morning,@ Pletchersaid. AThe plan all along was to run in the Haskell, andif he showed he could handle distances of 1 1/8 milesplus, the Travers would be a logical next spot. The wayhe finished today over a track that=s been deep anddemanding all week, with his ears pricked at the wire, showed he handled it pretty well. Those of us who=vebeen around this horse have always had a lot ofconfidence in him and anyone who knows him isn=treally surprised by what they saw.@ Verrazano=s dam Enchanted Rock, whose first foalwas graded stakes winner El Padrino (Pulpit), has anunraced 2-year-old Tapit filly currently in training withShug McGaughey. She also has a yearling filly by Pulpitand produced a colt by the late Claiborne stallion thisspring. She is currently in foal to More Than Ready. Points offthebench Upsets Bing Crosby (cont. from p1) Comma to the Top (Bwana Charlie) jumped out to theearly lead, but was passed by longshot Coach Bob(Bertrando) through an opening quarter in :22.44. Meanwhile, racing four deep among a tightly packedgroup, Points offthebench put in a powerful run leavingthe turn to put a nose in front after a half in :44.98.Goldencents, saving ground until upper stretch, wasforced to angle out around rivals widest of all atmidstretch and came flying at him in the final sixteenth, but Points Offthebench found the wire in time underMike Smith. Smith was registering a big stakes doubleon the weekend after piloting Palace Malice (Curlin) tovictory in Saturday=s GII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga. It was also a milestone winfor trainer Tim Yakteen. AMyfirst Grade I winner,@ Yakteensaid. AIt=s been a long time, atleast eight years [since hestarted training on his own]. Ididn=t think I=d have to waitthis long. He was traininggreat, we drew a great postand he was ready for thetask, so I felt confident goinginto the race. He ran hugeand Mike gave him a greatride.@ Smith added, ATim told metwo things about himbeforehand: He said don=tmake the lead too early withhim and he=ll need some helpchanging leads. This horse is still learning and I had tohelp him switch in the stretch. I made that lead and Iknew that [Goldencents] was coming. But my horsedug back in. He=s a good horse; he really is.@ Goldencents was the 9-5 favorite while taking onelders in his first start since finishing fifth in the GIPreakness S. May 18. Jockey Kevin Krigger admittedhis charge didn=t get the best trip. AWhen we turned forhome, they fanned out in front of me and I had to makea choice,@ Krigger said. AI thought for a second abouttrying to go down inside, but then I went out. I didn'twant to get stopped in a race like this. He fired for meand ran really well. I think we've got to be happy withthis race. It was a good one.@ Points offthebench, a maiden winner over this tracktwo years ago, raced only once in 2012, defeatingstate-bred foes in an optional claimer at Santa Anita inFebruary. On another red-letter weekend for the Germanbreeding industry, Neatico upstaged the overseaschallengers to register a home success and a career-best here. To say that the homebred is a late-developeris wide of the truth, as the veteran had annexed the G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld as a juvenilebefore a largely disappointing sophomore campaign, during which he had his stamina stretched beyondbreaking point in the G1 Deutsches Derby. Despitegetting some prize money in pattern races at four andfive, his overall profile was not boosted. His thirdplacing in the G2 Grosse Europa Meile here on hisseasonal finale last September seemed to suggest thathe had reached the limit of his ability. Crying out for a step up from a mile when runner-upin his three starts this term, the bay came good with anextra 165 yards to cover in Dortmund=s G3 GrosserPreis der Wirtschaft June 23, and used that confidence-booster as a springboard to an emphatic seven-lengthsuccess in the July 5 G3 Hamburg-Trophy over this tripto earn a supplementary to this contest. With his G1Deutsches Derby-winning stable companion LuckySpeed (Ire) (Silvano {Ger}) waiting for the Aug. 11 G1Grosser Preis von Bayern, Peter Schiergen knew he hada serious bullet to fire at this contest, and Neatico dulydelivered under a well-judged tactical ride fromAndrasche Starke. Settled off the strong pace set byOlivier Peslier on Opposite, he was rated while Silvestrede Sousa tackled the leader on Hunter=s Light with aquarter mile remaining. As that pair dueled ahead,Neatico was asked for his effort, and he was able tofind a surge which took him past his softened-up rivalsinside the final 100 yards.

First arriving at this Normandy venue two years ago,Elusive Kate made an instant impression by winning theListed Prix Six Perfections and was back to dominatethe G3 Prix du Calvados soon after. With no rail on herleft to guide her on her next start at Longchamp, shefirst exhibited an exaggerated tendency to drift thatway when still managing to win the G1 Prix MarcelBoussac on Arc day, and that was avoided on her nextforay to France when bagging this race in 2012. In the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, only the colts Excelebration(Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and Cityscape (GB)(Selkirk) got past her, and a stumble at the start ofNewmarket=s G1 Sun Chariot S. may have cost her thewin in September. Third behind Excelebration andCityscape again in Ascot=s G1Queen Elizabeth II S. onChampions= Day, she wasreturning from a lengthy winterbreak when fourth in the G1Queen Anne S. at the Royalmeeting June 18. Her driftinghabit returned with a vengeanceas she defeated Sky Lantern (Ire)(Red Clubs {Ire}) in the Falmouth at Newmarket July12. Led until the three-furlong marker by fellow Britishraider Chigun (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), she wascommitted at that point and, with the stand=s fence tokeep her straight and concentrate her effort, turned theremainder into a procession. AShe=s really top-class andhas never stopped improving,@ jockey William Buicksaid. AShe has been well-managed from day one and isgetting quicker with age. The pace was perfect today, but I was surprised I was so far clear at the furlongpole. I know Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire})and Intello (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) will be in the [Aug. 11]G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, but I see no reason why sheshouldn=t come back and take them on.@ Gosden mayhave other plans for the winner, however. AWe=ll have alook at the Jacques le Marois, but she could go for theG1 Matron S. [at Leopardstown Sept. 7]--that is morelikely at the moment,@ he said. AThis result proves thatthe fillies from the Falmouth are absolutely top-drawer. She=s as wide as she is tall and goes on most ground. She=ll probably be retired ahead of next spring and she=sdone incredibly well for her very sporting owner.@

Stall Juveniles to See Stakes Action... Trainer Al Stall is aiming his two impressive 2-year-old maiden winners from Saratoga=s Saturday card atstakes at the Spa. Twang (Dixie Union), who scored a front-running 3 1/4-length victory in his second lifetime startSaturday, was nominated to the GII Saratoga SpecialAug. 11. The Sept. 2 GI Hopeful S. is also a possibilityfor the Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneiderhomebred. "[The Special] is short rest, but we'll look at it," Stallsaid. "Obviously, we'll look at the Hopeful. We're notsure. We'll have to try him in a stakes sooner or later." Twang was sent off as the 6-5 favorite Saturdayafter taking third in his debut at Churchill Downs June21 (video). "We like him,@ Stall remarked. AHe showed us a lotearly this summer. He wasn't quite ready to run at theChurchill meet, but we thought he'd be good enough togo over there and get some experience. We thought hehad a chance to win, but he just wasn't that seasoned. He put in a good effort and was third, and it really sethim up for the Saratoga race." Stall=s other Spa graduate Base Case Scenario(Pioneerof the Nile) is being aimed at the GII WithAnticipation S. going 1 1/16 miles on the sod Aug. 29(video). The Klaravich Stable and William Lawrencecolorbearer sat back off the pace for most of hissecond lifetime start Saturday. He stole the lead aroundthe final turn and held off a late challenger to score bya neck. "He should have gotten a lot out of that race," Stallsaid. "You never know, he could have run a good raceand been third, beaten two lengths. [Jockey] Robby[Albarado] said he had a really nice turn of foot goingaround that turn." Base Case Scenario was also unveiled at Churchilland took third in that debut June 30. "We've liked him. He's a big, strong, nice horse,"Stall said. "He's been doing everything right; he wasjust crying out for more ground. You don't get a chanceto run around two turns as a maiden here until later inthe meet, and he had some turf breeding on both sides. It was a nice effort by him.@

SOUTH AFRICA SHINING BRIGHTBy James Trotter Jackson (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}), cruising past the postin front to win Saturday=s G1 Champions Cup atGreyville Racecourse in Durban, marked the final stakesrace of the season in South Africa. There are still ahandful of days until the end of July and the officialclosure of the racing season, but with all stakes behindus we can now look back and reflect on this season. The story headlining the media in South Africaleading up to this final feature day was the tussle at the

top of the NationalTrainers= Championship. The final months of theyear have seen a majorbattle between five-timechampion trainer Mike deKock and perennial top 10trainer Sean Tarry, whoworked as an assistant tode Kock before going outon his own 10 years ago. With only four days of

minor meetings left in the season, this championshipcould come down to the final day. Justin Snaithdeserves mention in third place,as his team surpassed the recordfor number of winners by atrainer of 172 with more than amonth left in the season, andcurrently on 195 he could breakthe 200 barrier before year end. The Breeders= Championship isan equally tight contest, withSummerhill Stud, eight-timeconsecutive champion breeder,in a tight battle with the youngerKlawervlei Stud in what islooking to be a rivalry that will continue for years tocome. One of South Africa=s best jockeys for more thantwo decades, Pierre AStriker@ Strydom, won his last

Jockey=s Championship in1998 and, after a number ofrunner-up efforts in the yearssince, has convincingly wonthis year=s title. It is worthnoting here the success ofanother South African jockey,Douglas Whyte, who recentlysealed his 13th consecutiveChampion Jockey title inHong Kong.

October 2011. We saw the death of South Africa=sinternationally renowned stallion, six-time champion sireJet Master (SAf). The search has since been on for anew king to succeed his throne, and in 2013 we mayhave found him. German-bred Silvano (Ger) (Lomitas{GB}) has ended the reign of Jet Master as the top ofthe stallion log through an incredible record breakingyear that included no fewer than six Group/Grade 1winners, including victories in South Africa=s twobiggest races, the G1 J&B Met and the G1 VodacomDurban July. Meanwhile, the regally bred Fort Wood(Sadler=s Wells) captured his first Champion BroodmareSire title just as his illustrious tenure as a stallion--whichhas included producing three Horse of the Years--slowlydraws to a close. The breeding industry has receivedplenty of signs of promise with all major sales seeingincreases-- the two primary sales, the Cape PremierYearling Sale Book 1 and TBA National Yearling Sale, experienced increases of 33% and 27%, respectively. On the racing front it has been an exciting year, withthe stars on the track being led by reigning Horse of theYear Variety Club (SAf) (Var), who showed off in anunbeaten season of five wins, including three Grade1=s. The two horses likely to compete with the reigningchamp for Horse of the Year honors are ChampionSprinter What a Winter (SAf) (Western Winter)--thehighest rated horse in the country--and Heavy Metal(SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), whose win in the Durban Julycarrying 132 lbs was the performance of the season inthe classic division. Crowd favorite Beach Beauty (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}),Triple Tiara winner Cherry on the Top (SAf) (TigerRidge), and female flying machine Via Africa (SAf) (Var)ensured the fairer sex was not to be outdone this pastyear and thrilled crowds almostevery time they stepped onto theracetrack. Perhaps the most excitingperformances for South Africanviewers were witnessed onDubai World Cup night, however, when Soft Falling Rain(SAf) (National Assembly)became the first 3-year-old towin the G2 Godolphin Mile, andShea Shea (SAf) (NationalEmblem {SAf}), in what was oneof the best sprinting displays seen anywhere this year, lowered his own track record in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint.Adding to the success of the night, The Apache (SAf)(Mogok) finished second in the $5 million G1 DubaiDuty Free. Shea Shea has followed up his win with anarrow second in the G1 Kings Stand S. at Royal Ascotand a fourth place finish in the G1 Darley July Cup July13. He will have both the G1 Nunthorpe S. at YorkAug. 23 and G1 Prix l=Abbaye at Longchamp Oct. 6next in his sights, while The Apache will likely travel tothe U.S. to compete in the G1 Arlington Million.

The African Horse Sickness quarantine restrictionscontinue to be the handicap and bane of the industry inSouth Africa, but this doesn=t stop the new SouthAfrican international team from collecting togetherbound for Dubai and beyond. Joining the abovementioned names at the Dubai World Cup Carnival nextyear is a powerful army, including Variety Club, HeavyMetal, unbeaten Grade 1 winning 3-year-olds Rumya{NZ} (Red Ransom), and Vercingetorix (SAf) (Silvano{Ger}), as well as Grade 1 winners Blueridge Mountain{Arg} (Giants Causeway), Slumdogmillionaire (SAf)(Strike Smartly), and Master Plan (SAf) (Jet Master{SAf}).

Michael BronzinoPalm Meadows Farm I find it interesting that Dansili accounted for the firstand second finishers in the GI Diana at Saratoga onSaturday, and then later on the same day, Kettle Corn(by Argentine-bred Candy Ride) and Argentine-bredBatti Man took first and third in the G2 San Diego H. atDel Mar. (Also this week, Argentine-bred Indy Point byIndygo Shiner out of the Argentine mare Red Point wonhis U.S. debut in the Wickerr S. at Del Mar.) Has anyone done a detailed and comprehensivestatistical analysis on the performance of foreign-bredhorses in stakes races in North America, or on stakesplacings in North America by offspring of foreign-bredstallions? (Calling Bill Oppenheim?) On the surface, itappears that a relatively small number of foreign-bredhorses disproportionately win or place in our majorstakes races. A lot of speculation has occurred regarding thedecline of the American Thoroughbred because ofexporting a lot of top weanlings, yearlings, broodmares, and stallions over many years with little importation. Ifit is true that foreign-bred horses are out-performingthose bred in the U.S. on a percentage basis in majorraces, it would be strong evidence that we may beexperiencing a decline in quality relative to the rest ofthe world and need to restock in order to hold our own.
