Has anyone done a detailed and comprehensivestatistical analysis on the performance of foreign-bredhorses in stakes races in North America, or on stakesplacings in North America by offspring of foreign-bredstallions? (Calling Bill Oppenheim?) On the surface, itappears that a relatively small number of foreign-bredhorses disproportionately win or place in our majorstakes races. A lot of speculation has occurred regarding thedecline of the American Thoroughbred because ofexporting a lot of top weanlings, yearlings, broodmares,and stallions over many years with little importation. Ifit is true that foreign-bred horses are out-performingthose bred in the U.S. on a percentage basis in majorraces, it would be strong evidence that we may beexperiencing a decline in quality relative to the rest ofthe world and need to restock in order to hold our own.
