ENZIAN VOLKSTANZGRUPPE

From June 30 through July 3 thirty-one members of the Enzian Volkstanzgruppe attended the 23rdGaufest in Orlando, Florida. It was a wonderful time to reconnect with old friends and to make newfriends from all over the United States and Canada who share our interest in Bavarian traditionsand folk dancing. A few members of EVTG had an opportunity to compete in the einzelplattlercompetition: Lillian Presley in the kinder category, and Brian, Alyssa and Morgan Schulz in theadult category. Although we chose not to compete in the gruppen preisplattler competition, severalof our members were asked to dance in the warm-up group before the competition, which wasquite a privilege. The entire dance troupe performed Bervagabunden as an Ehrentanz at theclosing picnic. Our Enzian Musikanten performed two selections during the Heimatabend, andJohn Mayer and Brian Schulz were later asked to participate in the very first GauverbandBlasmusikanten, a large brass and woodwind ensemble composed entirely of dancers who alsoplay instruments. The four-day event closed with a “Pirate Party” when one of our members wascaptured and held hostage by a group of “pirates” while they collected their “booty”! All in all, it wasa memorable, fun-filled event, and we look forward to the 2013 Gaufest to be held in Cleveland,Ohio.

On August 11 we will resume dance practices in preparation for our Stiftungsfest on September 10and the DSB Oktoberfest. We rehearse every Thursday with the children from 7:30 to 8:30 and theadult rehearsal begins at 8:30. New members of all ages are always welcome. Come out and see ifthe Enzian Volkstanzgruppe is for you.

GARDEN COMMITTEE

Tall Phlox is found in many European and North American Gardens. Tall phlox producesexuberant pale blue, pink or white flowers during summer and autumn. Many are fragrant. Phloxare best grown in well-drained soil, exposed to partial shade to partial sun. Plants need to be

watered during the summer if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week. As flowersfade, old flower stems should be cut back to encourage re-bloom. Tall gardenphlox needs to be divided every 2 to 3 years to promote vigor and minimizedisease problems. After the first killing frost, stems need to be cut back to aninch or two above soil line. Phlox are valued in the garden for their ability toattract hummingbirds and butterflies. My personal recommendation:

Longwood Gardens at Kennett Square, PA 19348 (www.longwoodgardens.org) is worthwhile a daytrip most likely during any season. Daily garden entrance fee is 18 USD, a yearly garden passcomes with two complimentary guest tickets and unlimited visits for the card holder for the price of60 USD. FROM THE BAUERNSTUBE

I trust everyone has had a safe and enjoyable summer so far. The weather has been great for themost part and the Bauernstube has been rolling right along. By the time you read this, we shouldbe just about back to our winter hours. Wednesdays will be open again September 7th with somenew and exciting Wednesday specials. We open at 7 and it really is a quiet night. If you are lookingto have a nice night out with some relaxing conversation, why not stop by? Saturday nights will beopen again starting August 20th. Even if you don't drink, the bar offers several non alcoholicselections or the bartender can whip you up a tasty beverage sans hooch. A couple of quickreminders about rentals, you may bring food into the Bauernstube for small parties, however nobeverages of any kind. If you are using the pavilion, set up and clean up is your responsibility andwhile you may bring soft drinks, alcohol must be purchased from the bar. For facility rentals, pleasesee Gary Huggler, however if you are looking for 2011, we have no dates available at this time.Don't forget to bring your key card, as the new system will go live August 17th.

DELAWARE HAUSBRAUERS

Well we did it, we brought home a ribbon. The Hausbrauers were not able to take home a Best inShow award but we did brew a beer that was judged Best in Style! This was a Maibock and onlyour 2nd beer brewed to date. Good things will be coming from the brewer kettles in the future andwe want you to be a part of it. While we can't sell you our beer, we can donate it and the first kegswill be rolling out sometime at the end of August. After a brief rest period in the cooler, we will bedonating a couple of kegs to the Oktoberfest Appreciation Party on November 5th. It's not going tobe the same Maibock that won us a ribbon, but it will be a tasty Kolsch, (we know it's tasty causewe checked it out already when dumping the yeast) and we know you will enjoy it. We are going tobe coming up with a brewing schedule soon and plan on providing certain free events with gloriousliquid bread. What other German club in the US can say they drink the beer they make?! OurSeptember meeting will be Sept 26th at 7:30. All are welcome.

GERMANIC GENEALOGY GROUP (GGG)

All members of the DSB are always invited and welcome to attend. We lookforward to welcoming you into our growing and active group. We start out theyear with new members in mind. Monday, October 24, 2011, 7:30 pm in the Board Room: Bring your problems, and we'll worktogether to help you get more family information than you have now. Have as much detail as youhave, so we have a good starting point.
