A special thanks to the new members and the TAG kids who showed. Besides hoping for a great Oktoberfest, I want to wish all committees success as they embark on their new seasons. It has been a long time coming. Be well, take care of each other and we will see you at Oktoberfest.

Germanic Genealogy Group (GGG)

All members are welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings. They are held on Sunday afternoons in the Deutsche Halle. We hope to see you there.

The Genealogy Group will meet on Sunday, September 26th. The meeting will begin at 3:15 pm in the Deutsche Halle, where we can maintain distance. This will be our first meeting of the 2021-2022 season.

“What is German about Old Swedes” led by Max Dooley. This program will include a virtual tour of Old Swedes church and Cemetery. Max has worked on their records for years and is very knowledgeable about their history.

In October we will be doing an Introduction to Genealogy for those who are just beginning to be interested in genealogy or need documentation to become full members of DSB. Topics will include reading Census Records, Old Newspapers on the internet, and how to find information online or in your local library or archive.

That meeting will be held on Sunday, October 24th at 3:15 pm.

HELP FOR GERMAN FLOOD VICTIMS

The devastating floods across Europe and especially in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany have created 184 deaths, forced evacuations, power outages and extreme damage to the infrastructure, agriculture and viticulture. The devastation is epic and has left lives, homes and businesses in shambles and in most cases without insurance coverage. Up to E30 billion will be needed for recovery that will take years to reconstruct.

The Delaware Saengerbund (DSB) is contributing $500 along with a member’s donation of $500 for a total of $1,000 immediately toward help for these victims. Although there are numerous fundraising campaigns, through the Red Cross and the German government, member, Andy Olivier, is spearheading a fundraising campaign as he has a personal contact who will see that funds are given where urgently needed. Andy’s deceased son, Ralph Olivier, was a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brother of a former German exchange student when they studied at Cornell, Hans Hahne. Hahne lives near the distressed area In Germany and has asked Andy for help. The DSB and Andy now ask members to reach out and donate funds to help our German friends. PLEASE MAKE OUT CHECKS TO THE DSB AND MAIL TO C/O GERMAN FLOOD RELIEF, TREASURER, KEITH FARMER, 49 SALEM CHURCH RD., NEWARK, DE 19713. Farmer will forward these contributions to Hahne who will personally distribute where needed.

In its past history the Delaware Saengerbund has always assisted with local and German charities. A grand concert in 1870 aided German widows and orphans, a charity concert aided flood sufferers in Cincinnati (1913), in 1917 a concert at the Queen Theater was for the benefit of the American Red Cross and in 1945 for the German Relief Fund along with many care packages. Profits from sauerkraut suppers supported the Elsmere Fire Co, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Eagle Post 7006 and Chief of Police Children’s camp. In 2001 after the 9/11 Twin Towers disaster, a sizeable donation was given to the relief fund of the Salvation Army in Wilmington.

Andy and the DSB Board ask that members support their fellow Germans as they are able, for any amount donated will help to bring a ray of sunshine and help.
