Dear Parishioners, Here is the next installment of The Absence of God Fulton John Sheen (born Peter John Sheen, May 8, 1895 December 9, 1979) was an American bishop (later archbishop) of the Catholic Church known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in 1919, [1] Sheen quickly became a renowned theologian, earning the Cardinal Mercier Prize for International Philosophy in 1923. He went on to teach theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of America as well as acting as a parish priest before being appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1951. He held this position until 1966, when he was made the Bishop of Rochester. He resigned in 1969 [2] as his 75th birthday approached, and was made the Archbishop of the titular see of Newport, Wales. Bishop Sheen continues: Even in his mediocrities and humdrum existence, he still dreams and hopes to get beyond the present. Women who have been jaded in many marriages hope to recover what they were looking for in novels which vicariously supply the romance which was never romantic. Teenagers substitute worship for Worship, forge new idols before which they prostrate with a religious fervor such as Samsons with long hair. But they would blow a fuse if Delilah used a scissors to shear away that all important attribute of juvenile divinity. Man Ltd., or limited, is really unlimited in his desires. Even when he denies the Infinite, there still come flashes, now and then, of that for which he was made and without which he cannot rest. It may be the sight of innocence in a child, or the vision of a beautiful young woman whose virtue matches her loveliness, or the chance meeting with a man who never sold his soul. Our uneasiness even in the midst of thrills is a kind of pain. As Sir Almroth Wright has put it, “A pain in the mind is the prelude to all discovery.” We generally do not strive to solve a problem unless it hurts us to leave it unsolved; many of us would not move unless the unsolved problem hurt us badly. Dear Parishioners,

Here is the next installment of The Absence of God

Fulton John Sheen (born Peter John Sheen, May 8, 1895 – December 9,

1979) was an American bishop (later archbishop) of the Catholic

Church known for his preaching and especially his work on television and

radio. Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in 1919,[1] Sheen quickly

became a renowned theologian, earning the Cardinal Mercier Prize for

International Philosophy in 1923. He went on to teach theology and

philosophy at the Catholic University of America as well as acting as

a parish priest before being appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese

of New York in 1951. He held this position until 1966, when he was made

the Bishop of Rochester. He resigned in 1969[2] as his 75th birthday

approached, and was made the Archbishop of the titular see of Newport,

Wales.

Bishop Sheen continues: Even in his mediocrities and humdrum

existence, he still dreams and hopes to get beyond the present.

Women who have been jaded in many marriages hope to recover

what they were looking for in novels which vicariously supply the

romance which was never romantic. Teenagers substitute worship for

Worship, forge new idols before which they prostrate with a

religious fervor such as Samsons with long hair. But they would

blow a fuse if Delilah used a scissors to shear away that all important

attribute of juvenile divinity.

Man Ltd., or limited, is really unlimited in his desires. Even when he

denies the Infinite, there still come flashes, now and then, of that for

which he was made and without which he cannot rest. It may be the

sight of innocence in a child, or the vision of a beautiful young

woman whose virtue matches her loveliness, or the chance meeting

with a man who never sold his soul.

Our uneasiness even in the midst of thrills is a kind of pain. As Sir

Almroth Wright has put it, “A pain in the mind is the prelude to all

discovery.” We generally do not strive to solve a problem unless it

hurts us to leave it unsolved; many of us would not move unless the

unsolved problem hurt us badly.

Dressing for Church

Yes, it’s quite hot. Yes, it’s summer. Still, there is a certain amount

of decorum that should be observed when entering God’s House and

worshipping Him at Mass. These are not the times to sport your

favorite beach-wear, regardless of how cool and fashionable it is.

Nor should shorts and flip-flops rule the day. Our church is very

nicely air-conditioned so, it’s not too much to dress modestly and,

yes, tastefully, for God. Gents should make every effort to wear

dress slacks and, at least, a sport shirt. Ladies are always at their

most beautiful in a tasteful dress or skirt and blouse. Should ladies

choose slacks, remember looser is always more comfortable than

tighter. Think Betty White rather than Kim Kardashian.
