Since the bones were rubbing against one another, climbing stairs became painfully challenging. At the suggestion of her family physician, she met with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tom Antkowiak. Hope tried cortisone injections to relieve her discomfort, but the pain never subsided. Together, they decided that the best course of treatment was robotic-assisted surgery. Ken enjoyed a well-deserved vacation with his children and grandchildren at Walt Disney World.

Surviving Stroke: ken garland’S Story

Ken Garland was rehabbing his basement when he suffered a stroke on Sept. 8, 2015. After eating dinner, he stood up to get back to work when he felt dizzy and a loss of balance. He was slouched down on the sofa when his wife returned from walking the dog. She called 911 and within minutes the Manhattan paramedics were transporting Ken to the Silver Cross Emergency Department (ED) where a Code Stroke Team was awaiting his arrival. By this time, Ken felt tingling in his arms and legs.

Dr. Richard Burgess, Neurointerventional Radiologist and Stroke Neurologist with the Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute, immediately gave Ken tPA to

talking and swallowing needing nourishment through an IV over the next three days.

“I made up my mind that I was not going to let this get me down,” said the 54 year old. “I needed to keep a positive attitude if I was going to overcome this and make a full recovery.”

Recovery with RIC specialistsWhile in the ICU, Dr. Burgess visited Ken every day along with several other specialists monitoring his treatment closely and making adjustments as necessary. Ken also began working with a team of therapists with The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) at Silver Cross.

In less than a week, Ken’s progress had improved and he was moved to RIC’s rehabilitation unit at Silver Cross where Ken took his first steps in the therapy gym after just a few days. He spent a total of four weeks on the unit working with RIC-trained physical, occupational and speech/language therapists to re-learn how to walk, move his hands and fingers, and swallow. “Rehabilitation makes an enormous difference,” said Dr. Burgess. “With my RIC colleagues at Silver Cross, patients

get world-class rehabilitation, maximizing their chances of getting back to their life and the things that matter to them.” “The doctors, nurses, therapists, and aides are all fantastic,” praised Ken. “They were always pushing me to take that extra step and do every exercise so I can fully recover. They even made it possible for me to visit my new grandson in Silver Cross’s Birthing Center and also go to my other grandson’s birthday party one afternoon.”

Disney or Bust!Upon discharge on Oct. 12, 2015, Ken has continued his recovery in RIC’s outpatient facility at Silver Cross

Hospital, Pavilion A over the past year. “I continue to work with my occupational therapist, Debbie, on my fine motor skills,” Ken said.

In November, Ken took a long overdue vacation to Orlando, FL with his children and 4 grandchildren and is back to work full-time.

“Because of the outstanding care I received, I have since switched my insurance plan and primary care doctor so I can continue to come to Silver Cross for all my medical care. “They are the best!” adds Ken. Ì

begin dissolving any blood clots and improve the flow of blood to the brain. A MRI revealed a tiny clot in a constricted area of Ken’s brain stem, which can be devastating, even fatal.

“Ken had a rare type of stroke in the back of his brain—often times the symptoms from these are missed,” said Dr. Burgess. “The tiny blood vessel that clogged off was so small it wasn’t even visible on our CT scans and was far too small to be reached by a clot-retriever in our endovascular suite. But by starting intravenous tPA in the ED as fast as possible, we minimized the damage and set Ken up for the best recovery.”

After Ken was admitted to the ICU, paralysis had set in completely on his left side. He had difficulty

Have you ever felt unsteady or dizzy? Or maybe you sometimes lose your footing. Without proper treatment, falls can result in hip fractures, broken bones, and head injuries. Falling can also cause an older adult to become fearful or depressed, making it difficult to stay active.

To help active and older adults stay on their feet, The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) at Silver Cross Hospital has opened Brain and Balance Clinic on Joliet’s west side.

“The clinic is an extension of our Neurosciences and Stroke Rehabilitation program at Silver Cross Hospital making it even more convenient for patients

requiring physical therapy for vestibular (balance) disorders, headaches and migraines, and fall prevention,” said Matt Boebel, Administrative Director of Rehabilitation Services with RIC at Silver Cross.

“Our therapists are specially trained to conduct a thorough evaluation and develop individualized treatment plans to improve the

strength, stability and mobility of patients with brain and balance problems.”

Finding, Maintaining and Teaching BalanceLoss of balance can be caused by medical conditions or when your vision, inner ear or muscular systems are not working properly.

“Patients who are referred by their doctor are asked a series of questions about their symptoms and condition,” said Matt Degraff, senior physical therapist with the Brain and Balance Clinic. “We then perform tests such as motion, strength, coordination, visual tracking using Frenzel Goggles, and balance assessments with our new Balance System, to help evaluate overall physical ability. We also talk with our patients’ doctors to get a good picture of their health history so we can effectively address the problem.”

Once the causes have been identified, RIC’s Brain and Balance Clinic therapists develop an individual program to address the patient’s specific needs including exercises that can be performed at home. Therapists also provide recommendations to the patient and their family members on how to create and maintain a fall-proof home environment.

“Decreased balance can diminish your ability to lead an active and independent life,” said Dr. Andrew Hendrix, medical director of The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Silver Cross. “About one third of people over 65 and almost half of people over 80 will fall at least once this year.”

Free Balance Enhancement and Fall Prevention ScreeningsAt RIC’s Brain and Balance Clinic, therapists conduct free screenings year round to determine fall risk. The 15-minute screening includes medical history, blood pressure measurements, and balance assessment to identify risk factors, posture, range of motion, strength, static and dynamic balance. Based on the results, therapists may provide recommendations to improve balance and reduce risk of falls and/or a referral for treatment. To schedule a screening, call (815) 300-6580.

In addition to vestibular disorders rehabilitation, balance enhancement therapy, and fall prevention screenings, the Brain and Balance Clinic offers evaluation and treatment of headaches and migraines using the latest evidenced-based rehabilitation practices. To schedule an appointment, call (815) 300-6580. Ì
