COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
August 10, 2014 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Silent Prayer
O God, when our hunger for hope had so weakened us we could barely speak,
you fed us with the Bread of life,
spread with the sweet honey of your grace.
So fill us with your love in this time of worship. Amen
Hymn Sing
Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet.
Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one.
Centering Music - “God is Calling through the Whisper” GTG# 410 God is calling through the voices of our neighbors’ urgent prayers,
through their longing for redemption and for rescue from despair.
Place of hurt or face of needing; strident cry or silent pleading:
God is calling– can you hear? God is calling– can you hear?
(*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk. GTG is the purple “Glory to
God” hymnal. STF is the “Sing the Faith” smaller blue hymnal)
Call to Worship Leader: We come to worship our God, to listen to the One who calls us here. People: We come trusting God to lead us in the coming days, as surely as were our grandparents in the faith. Leader: We come to worship our God, to shout with joy to the God of all people. People: We come to the Creator of all things, to be bathed in the waters of life. Leader: We come to the Feast of God's faithful, to be fed by the One who never forsakes us. People: We come to worship our God, to sing aloud to the One who saves us.
*Hymn - “All Things Bright and Beautiful” GTG #20 *Prayer of Confession
Leader: Despite all the ways we speak of sin - failures, mistakes, intended acts, Scripture tells us that we are stubborn- hearted, wanting only our way. But if we pause to listen to God, if we open our mouths (and our hearts) to confess our sin, God will fill our emptiness with forgiveness and hope. Let us pray together, as we say, All: Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, that we may delight in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.
Silence is kept
*Assurance of Pardon Leader: This is the good news: after what God has done for us, what an anyone or any thing do to us? We are new people, graced by our loving God. People: Forgiven, embraced, welcomed by our God, we will offer open hearts and serving hands to everyone we meet. Thanks be to God. Amen.
*Musical response - “You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy” GTG #437 You are the Lord, giver of mercy! You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy!
*Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

With Hophni and with Phineas - Their priestly acts a fraud--
Their actions served their appetites instead of serving God.
We run aground when we are found inviting these things in.
There’s Sloth, of course, and Gluttony, Our Anger, and Greed,
the lure of Lust, Pride and Envy, the Seven Deadly Sins!

RESPONSE TO THE WORD
*Litany of Faith
Leader: “Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and
her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous
ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were
haughty and did an abomination before me.”
(Ezekiel 16:49-50)
People: By what we eat and what we drink, we make a statement
about who we are. Help us to be shining examples of
generosity and love.
Leader: “Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch
themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the
flock and calves from the midst of the stall, who sing idle
songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for
themselves instruments of music, who drink wine in
bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are
not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!” (Amos 6:4-7 )
People: Forgive us Lord, we have fed ourselves and forgotten
those who are hungry.
Leader: “Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and
they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly
things.” ( Philippians 3:19 )
People: We have made a god out of food. It has become
entertainment rather than an opportunity for
community and nourishment.
Leader: “Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of
meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to
poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.”
(Proverbs 23:20-21 )
People: Help us to live and consume simply, so others may
simply live.
Leader: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life,
what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your
body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food,
and the body more than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25-34)
People: Food and drink are a gift, but we make it a problem.
Like all of your gifts, O God, help us to use them to
your glory.
Leader: “Do you not know that you are God's temple and that
God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's
temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy,
and you are that temple.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
People: Help us to know how to treat our bodies with dignity,
wisdom and modesty.
Leader: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all
to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
People: and let us always remember that our bodies are a gift
from you O God. Thanks be to God. Amen.
Offering
“Freely you have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:8

Go Forward and Serve!
Be a part of God’s work through CPC!
“Greed, envy, sloth, pride and gluttony: these
are not vices anymore. No, these are market-
ing tools. Lust is our way of life. Envy is just
a nudge towards another sale. Even in our
relationships we consume each other, each of
us looking for what we can get out of the
other. Our appetites are often satisfied at the
expense of those around us. In a dog-eat-dog
world we lose part of our humanity.”
- Jon Foreman

Equal Exchange Coffee -Always Available
By choosing Fair Trade coffee you enable small-scale farmers to
support themselves, their families and their communities. When
you purchase it through the Presbyterian Coffee Project, you are
directly supporting the Presbyterian Hunger Program's essential
relief and development work around the world. Last year,
Presbyterian congregations and communities across the U.S.
purchased 107,425 pounds of fairly traded products from Equal
Exchange. As a result Equal Exchange made a $16,113 donation
to PC(USA). To learn more about the Presbyterian Coffee Project,
go to equalexchange.coop/pcusa.
Equal Exchange coffee and tea is always for sale at Collingswood
Presbyterian Church. There is a poster-list in the church lounge of
the products we have in stock. If you would like to purchase cof-

Thank you CPC!
To the Deacons of CPC,
Your many cards, flowers, and remembrances to my mother,
Evelyn Plunkett were truly appreciated. As a former Deacon, Mother
knew the many services all of you provide to the congregation. She
appreciated the time and caring each of you gave her as did we.
Thank you also for the lovely reception you gave during Moth-
er’s viewing. Thanks for a true gift.
