Principal’s Report
Welcome back and we hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
We look forward to another busy and productive term and we have started
already with an AFL workshop and the Fun Run and Cross Country last week.
This week, we have been thrilled to host performances from the Bell Shake-
speare Theatre Company of “Bottom’s Dream”, a child friendly version of Shakespeare’s classic “Mid-Summer Night’s Dream”. The 4 performers gave
us an exciting and fast paced performance and it was great to see that even the
younger children were able to engage with the content and theme of treating our friends well. Staff and all students K-6 thoroughly enjoyed viewing this
world class company in action and this is another example of how Cobar Pub-
lic School is able to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students. As Claude and Mario would say, “We’re out west, not out of touch”.
Staff have continued with a range of professional learning activities this term. Myself and Mr Finn travelled to Dubbo on Monday to learn about the new
School Staffing Agreement which came into force from day 1 this term and
runs until 2020. We also undertook further training in the new Performance Development Framework for teachers. Mrs Fennamore continues her training
in Autism Spectrum Disorders, the whole school staff have received further
training in the Disability Standards in Education which are aligned to the Disability Discrimination Act and we have also undertaken training in dealing
with extremist and anti-social behaviours.
At this week’s P&C meeting a motion was moved regarding what should be done with the mountains of lost property, clothing, that accumulates in the red
lost property bins. The accepted motion is that: lost property bins will be emp-
tied by the P&C every second week, these will be even weeks, with lost prop-erty with no name on it being immediately cleaned and put up for sale. If an
item has a name on it, that item will be held for a period of 5 weeks and if
during that time the item is not claimed, the item will be cleaned and put up for sale. Please understand that neither the school nor the P&C have any
responsibility for returning lost property, it is the sole responsibility of parents
and carers to follow up if they discover if items have not made it home.
Finally, we are beginning to collect data around how families, and staff, use
the mid-term break. We will need to re-apply for this again next year and we
will require data to support the need for the break. With this in mind we
request that you please notify the school either by word of mouth or in writing
when: 1. You make appointments (even for travel to shop) on the mid-term
break, simply let us know the type of appointment (medical, business,
personal) and a location, or 2. You attempt to make an appointment for the
mid-term break dates but are unable to get one and instead need to take time
off during the school term to attend the appointment. Neither of these circum-
stances need to be for out of town appointments, they can include appoint-
ments made for here in Cobar.

The TEN (Targeted Early Numeracy) Initiative
About the initiative TEN is an early numeracy initiative focused on supporting students who are experiencing difficulty in numeracy in the
early years. It recognises that even where a quality whole-class mathematics program exists, a small percentage of stu-
dents may be at risk of not meeting expected targets. Children who start ahead in mathematics generally stay ahead, and
children who start behind generally stay behind. The longer we leave it the bigger the gap and the harder to catch up.
The goal of the TEN program is to ensure all students are on track with numeracy by the end of Year 2.
The TEN initiative is designed to be implemented in a whole-class setting. TEN is an intervention program but does not
involve the withdrawal of students or the use of an additional specialist teacher.
How it Works Students are assessed by the teacher every five weeks. They are placed into ability groups according to the information
from the assessment. Students participate in activities at their level of development, which are designed to move them on
to the next step.
TEN Groups occur for ten minutes daily. The activities are fun and engaging and usually involve cards, dice and
dominoes.
How Parents Can Help Practise counting, both forwards and backwards. Steps, apples at the supermarket, pencils.
It is important that every time you count forwards, count backwards too.
Identify numbers in the environment. Road signs, price tags, sports people’s jerseys.
Practise identifying patterns on dice, cards and dominoes. Count on from the biggest number.
If you would like any more information, please contact me through the Administration Office.

RESPONSIBLE RESPECTFUL
Anton Punzet Ata Haronga
LEARNER
Ernie has been spotting Dustin around the school throughout the Term 1. He is a responsible student
in and outside of the classroom. Dustin has been
seen helping his peers during maths groups without
being asked by a teacher. He takes the time and
patient explaining things to others when they are
not quite sure what to do. An excellent role model
for our school. Well done Dustin!
Wow, Anton has been spotted by Ernie for displaying respect for teachers and classmates
in the classroom. Anton has been particularly
respectful to other students during class time by
helping them out whenever they require it. Anton
always does as he is asked and was spotted wearing
full school uniform. Well done Anton.
Ernie has been keeping a watchful eye on Atamarie for some time.
Ernie has observed Atamarie both in class and around school showing a
high level of interest in her learning. Ernie sees Atamarie working hard to
complete her classwork even when it may be difficult. Atamarie has learnt
a lot and shares her knowledge about the school garden with her peers.
Ernie has listened to Atamarie talk with her friends, peers and staff at
school and he hears that she knows that how you say things to people
matters. Atamarie is always calm and uses a quiet voice when sharing in-
formation. Keep up the great work Ata!

Bike Safety CPS had Senior Constable Craig Skene visit the school on Tuesday
to talk to the senior students about Bike Safety. Constable Skene
discussed road rules and bike maintenance also where the appropriate
place to ride a bike. He covered some interesting facts on legal
requirements that a bike must have and also that helmet's are a
must at all times. The children were very engaged and asked lots of
questions regarding bike safety.
