Every day wereceive many letters fromcollectors all over the worldinquiring about the world ofthe trolls, and we hope thatour Troll Club will give thegrowing numbers ofcollectors the informationthey seek.

over the world.The Ny Form troll storybegan at Tynset in the wint-er of 1964 when the artistTrygve Torgersen made thefirst troll. Since then thetrolls have multiplied andnew figures and charactershave been added to therange. Today the models aresculpted by Bjørn Schulze,Torgersen's grandson.

The trolls are very special.For us who make them, too,they acquire a meaning anda value far above that ofmere figurines. They are easyto love, which seems to bewhat happens everywhere;more and more people fall inlove with the trolls.

The Troll Club will not onlyenable us to inform youabout what is happening inthe world of the Ny Formtrolls - it will also be a placefor fellow collectors to meetand exchange informationand ideas. Furthermore, ameeting-place for the keen-est collectors will shortly beestablished on the Internet.

In order to meet ourobjectives we need yourhelp, collectors and troll lov-ers. Please send anycomments, suggestions orideas to us so that we cankeep on expanding the worldof the Ny Form trolls.

Die Trolle der Firma »Ny form« gibt es seit 1965, und besonders in den letzten Jahrenfinden sie eine ständig größere Schar Anhänger. Immer mehr Menschen freuen sich übereinen oder mehrere »Ny form«-Trolle. Täglich erhalten wir viele Briefe von Sammlernaus aller Welt, die mehr über die Welt der Trolle wissen wollen. Wir hoffen, daß wir mitHilfe des Trollklubs die Nachfragen befriedigen bzw. die gewünschten Informationen derwachsenden Sammlerschar vermitteln können.

Die Firma »Brödrene Flaarönning AS« ist ein 128 Jahre altesFamilienunternehmen, daß in den letzten sechzehn Jahren die »Ny form«-Trolleweltweit vermarktet hat.

Die Geschichte der »Ny form«-Trolle beginnt im Winter 1964 in Tynset, als derKünstler Trygve Torgersen den ersten Troll herstellte. Seit damals steigt die Anzahl pro-duzierter Trolle ständig, werden kontinuierlich neue Figuren und Typen in dasSortiment aufgenommen. Heute werden die Modelle von demSohn Torgersens modelliert, von Björn Schulze. Trolle sind schon etwas Spezielles.Auch für uns, die Leute, die sie herstellen, haben sie eine Bedeutung und einen Wert,der über das rein Äußere hinausreicht. Man muß sie einfach mögen, und dies scheint inaller Welt der Fall zu sein; mehr und mehr Menschen verlieben sich in den Troll.

Der Trollklub gibt Ihnen die Möglichkeit, sich über alles zu informieren, was in der Weltder »Ny form«-Trolle vor sich geht. Er soll aber auch Sammlern die Möglichkeit bieten,selbst Informationen und Ideen auszutauschen. Die eifrigsten Sammler können dem-nächst im Internett diskutieren.

Far to the North where thewinter storms whip theweather-beaten coasts, youwill find a long and narrowcountry. Here you see dark

forests with moonlit lakes,deep fjords surrounded bymighty snowcappedmountains, and long riversand cold streams cascadingdown the mountain sides.

Nowadays this country

is covered by snow and iceonly six months a year. Along, long time ago, how-ever, there existed amassive glacier thatbrooded over the entirecountry for thousands ofyears.

As the climate gradual-ly warmed and the glacierslowly retreated to theNorth, Man to the Southof the glacier followed inits wake. Looking at thiscountry and finding it tobe magnificent, theyconsidered themselves tobe its first inhabitants.People settled there andnamed it Norway. Theywere themselves called‘nordmenn’ (Men of theNorth).

It did not take themlong, however, to realizethat on this land therewere various other creatur-es hiding out in the forestsand mountain sides.People did not know whatthese creatures were, butthey were generallybelieved to have superna-

tural powers, and theycame to be known as trolls.

The trolls would comeout of their hiding-placesonly after sun-set, and theywould disappear before themorning sun arose in theEast. Direct exposure to

thesun could cause themto crack, turn into stoneand possibly burst. Onoccasion the trolls wouldevidently forget tohide from the sun,and rockformations cantoday be foundin various placeswith troll-likefeatures.

Thetrollsweremostlyseen onbrightmoonlitnights,or dur-ingstormynightsthat couldfrightenabout

Some trolls were giants,and others were small.There were stories of two-headed as well asthree-headed trolls, andeven a few had only oneeye in the middle of their

wrinkled foreheads. Othershad trees and rough moss-like growth all over theirheads and noses.

Although they wereshaggy and rough-haired,and most looked frighten-ing, they were also knownto be good-natured andnaive. So naive in fact thateven sly peasant boyscould, on occasion, easilytrick them. Stories aboutsuch encounters are com-mon in the fairy tales.

Most trolls lived to behundreds of years old.However, because of thetrolls extremely shy nature,their true origin, their life-style or what surprises theymight pull has always beena mystery.

The ability to transformthemselves counted amongthe trolls many superna-tural skills. Thefairy maidens – called

“Hulder” – could transforminto incredibly attractiveyoung ladies. However,they could not get rid oftheir tails. Hunters andfarmers sons, who werelured to the mountains bythese fairies, would usuallycheck for tails on theirnew-found beauties.

The wrath of the trollswas boundless. It wastherefore considered veryimportant not to makethem your enemy. If afarmer did provoke a troll,his livestock might be sub-ject to disease or harmfulsickness, or worse thingscould happen. On the oth-er hand, a good relations-hip with the trolls could bevery rewarding.

Now, even in moderntimes it is well advised tokeep a good standing withthe trolls, since you neverknow when you will meetone yourself. The nexttime you go to the darkforests and the mightymountains with their deeplakes and roaring water-falls, just remember, theyprobably mean no harm.But be aware. In the twi-light hours you are no

longer alone.Then it is only you . . .

Weit im hohen Norden, woWinterstürme die wetterharteMeeresküste peitschen, liegtein langgezogenes, schmalesLand. Dort gibt es dunkleWälder mit mondbeschien-enen Seen, von mächtigen,schneebedeckten Bergenumgebene tiefe Fjorde, endl-ose Flüsse und kalteSturzbäche, die sich an denBerghängen über her-vorspringende Felsen ergieß-en.

Heutzutage ist dieses Landnur noch sechs Monate langvon Eis und Schnee bedeckt.Aber vor langer, langer Zeitzog sich ein riesiger Gletscherüber das ganze Land — vieletausend Jahre lang.

Als sich das Klima all-mählich erwärmte und derGletscher sich immer weiternach Norden zurückzog,folgten ihm die Menschen,die sich südlich desGletschers angesiedelt hatt-en, nach. Sie sahen sich umund fanden eine zauberhafteLandschaft vor, wo sie sichniederließen und sichschließlich als dieErstbewohner dieses Landesbetrachteten, das sieNorwegen tauften. Sie selbstwurden “Normannen”(Männer des Nordens)genannt.

Es dauerte jedoch nichtlange, bis sie feststellen mußt-en, daß dieses Land ver-schiedene andere Kreaturenbeherbergte, die sich in denWäldern und Bergenversteckten. Die Menschenwußten nicht, wer dieseKreaturen waren, es wurdenihnen jedoch übernatürlicheKräfte zugeschrieben, undschließlich gab man ihnenden Namen “Trolle”.

Erst nachSonnenuntergang wagtensich die Trolle aus ihrenVerstecken, und sie ver-schwanden wieder, noch

bevor die Morgensonne imOsten aufging. Es hieß, daßsie durch einen direktenKontakt mit der Sonne Rissebekommen, zu Steinverwandelt oder sogar berstenwürden. Gelegentlich vergaß-en die Trolle, sich rechtzeitigvor der Sonne zu verstecken.Daher können noch heute anverschiedenen StellenSteingebilde mit trollähn-lichen Zügen gefunden werd-en.

Die Trolle wurden meist-ens in klaren, mondhellenNächten gesehen oder aberin stürmischen Nächten, diejeder Menschenseele, die sichzufällig im Freien befand,Furcht einjagen konnten.

Die Trolle hatten sehrdeutlich ausgeprägteMerkmale, wie etwa lange,krumme Nasen, nur jeweilsvier Finger und Zehen anHänden und Füßen, und diemeisten hatten lange,buschige Schwänze.

Einige Trolle warenRiesengestalten, anderewiederum waren von kleinemWuchs. Man hörte auchGeschichten von zweiköpfig-en und sogar dreiköpfigenTrollen. Manche hattensogar nur ein Auge mitten aufihrer runzeligen Stirn.Andere wiederum waren aufihren Köpfen und Nasen mitbaumartigen Wucherungenund moosähnlichen Gebildenbewachsen.

Obgleich sie zottiges,rauhes Haar hatten und diemeisten Trollefurchterregend aussahen, war-en sie doch als gutmütig undeinfältig bekannt, und zwar sosehr, daß sie gelegentlich sel-bst von schlauenBauernjungen leichtübertölpelt werden konnten.Geschichten über solcheBegebenheiten kommen inden Märchen häufig vor.

Die meisten Trolle wurd-en mehrere hundert Jahre alt.Aufgrund ihrer extrem scheu-en Natur ist jedoch ihr wahr-er Ursprung, ihr Lebensstilund was sie sonst noch anüberraschungen auf Lagerhatten, immer ein Geheimnis

geblieben.Die Fähigkeit, sich

verwandeln zu können,wurde als eine der vielenübernatürlichen Kräfte derTrolle angesehen. DieWeibchen, auch “Hulder”genannt, konnten sich inunglaublich anziehende jungeMädchen verwandeln.Allerdings konnten sie ihreSchwänze nicht loswerden.Daher sahen Jäger undBauernsöhne, die von diesenFeengeschichten in die Bergegezogen wurden, bei ihrenneu gefundenen Liebchengewöhnlich sofort nach, obsie einen Schwanz hatten.

Wenn Trolle erzürnt war-en, kannte dieser Zorn keineGrenzen. Daher war es sehrwichtig, sie sich nicht zuFeinden zu machen. Wennein Bauer einen Troll heraus-forderte, konnte es vorkomm-en, daß sein Vieh krankwurde oder noch schlimmereSachen passierten.Andererseits konnte sichjedoch ein gutes Verhältnismit den Trollen als sehrlohnend erweisen.

Selbst heutzutage ist esratsam, bei den Trollen ingutem Licht zu stehen, dennman weiß ja nie, wann maneinem Troll begegnet. WennSie sich das nächste Mal indie tiefen Wälder und zu denmächtigen Bergen mit ihrenunergründlichen Seen undreißenden Wasserfällen bege-ben, denken Sie daran, daßsie wahrscheinlich harmlossind. Aber sehen Sie sich vor.Wenn die Dämmerunghereinbricht, sind Sie nichtmehr allein.

Dans le grand nord, là où lestempêtes d’hiver attaquent lacôte érodée par le mauvaistemps, il existe une contrée

longue et étroite. Vous ytrouvez des forêts sombresaux lacs reflétant la lune, desfjords profonds entourés parde hautes montagnes auxsommets enneigés, et de longsfleuves et des ruisseaux froidsdévalant la pente desmontagnes.

Aujourd’hui ce pays estcouvert de neige et de glacependant six mois de l’annéeseulement. Cependant, il y atrès, très longtemps, il y avaitun énorme glacier qui avaitrecouvert tout le payspendant plusieurs millénaires.

A mesure que le climat seréchauffa graduellement etque le glacier remonta peu àpeu vers le nord, les hommesau sud du glacier suivirent saretraite. Explorant ce pays etle trouvant magnifique, ilspensèrent être ses premiershabitants. Les genss’établirent là et appelèrentce pays la Norvège. Eux-mêmes étaient appelés les«nordmenn» (gens du nord).

Cependant, il ne leurfallut pas beaucoup de tempspour se rendre compte qu’ilexistait dans ce pays d’autrescréatures qui se cachaientdans les forêts et sur les flancsdes montagnes. Les gens nesavaient pas quelles étaientces créatures, mais on pensaiten général qu’elles avaientdes pouvoirs surnaturels, etelles furent appelées trolls.

Les trolls sortaient de leurscachettes seulement après lecoucher du soleil, et ils dis-paraissaient avant que lesoleil du matin ne se lève àl’est. D’autres avai-ent la tête et le nez entière-ment recouverts d’arbustes etde végétation en forme demousse.

Malgré leur pelage touffuet l’air effrayant de la plupart,ils avaient la réputationd’avoir bon caractère et d’êtrenaïfs. Si naïfs en fait quemême des garçons de fermemalins pouvaient, de temps àautre, leur jouer des tours. Lesrécits de ces rencontres sontfréquents dans les contes defée.

La majorité des trollsvivaient pendant des siècles.Cependant, à cause ducaractère très timide destrolls, leur origine et leurmode de vie, les surprisesqu’ils pouvaient causer sonttoujours restées mystérieuses.

Leur faculté de changer deforme était l’une des nom-breuses aptitudes surnaturell-es des trolls. Les dames fées -appelées «Hulder» - pouvai-ent se transformer en jeunesfemmes d’une beautéextrême. Cependant, elles nepouvaient pas se débarrasserde leur queue et les chasseurset les garçons de ferme, quiétaient attirés dans lesmontagnes par ces fées, véri-fiaient en général que les bell-es filles qu’ils rencontraientn’en avaient pas.

La colère des trolls pouvaitêtre sans limites. Par consé-quent, on considérait commetrès important de ne pas s’enfaire des ennemis. Si unpaysan provoquait un troll, ilrisquait de voir son bétailtomber malade ou d’être

victime de choses bien plusgraves encore. D’un autrecôté, il pouvait être très pro-fitable de bien s’entendreavec les trolls.

Même encore aujourd’hui,il est important d’avoir debons rapports avec les trolls,car on ne sait jamais àl’avance quand on va enrencontrer un. La prochainefois que vous irez dans lesforêts sombres et les hautesmontagnes, avec leurs lacsprofonds et leurs chutes d’eaugrondantes, rappelez-voussimplement qu’ils ne cher-cheront probablement pas àvous faire du mal. Mais faitesattention. Au crépuscule,vous ne serez plus vraimentseul. Vous serez seul... avecles trolls.

Man mano che il climagradualmente si riscaldava eil ghiacciaio si ritirava lenta-mente verso il nord, gliuomini a sud del ghiacciaio loseguirono nella sua ritirata.Guardando questo paese etrovandolo magnifico, questiuomini pensarono di esserne iprimi abitanti. Si insedia-rono nella regione e la

chiamarono Norvegia. Essi aloro volta furono chiamati“Uomini del Nord”.

Tuttavia non ci vollemolto perchè si accorgesseroche in questa terra abitavanovarie altre creature che sinascondevano nelle foreste elungo i pendii dellemontagne. La gente nonsapeva chi fossero questecreature, ma in genere attri-buivano loro poteri sopranna-turali, ed esse divennero notecon il nome di troll.

I troll uscivano dai loronascondigli solo dopo il tra-monto e scomparivano almattino prima che sorgesse ilsole a est. Si potevano vedere i trollnelle notti illuminate dalchiaro di luna, o in quelletempestose che avrebberoatterrito chiunque si fossetrovato all’aperto in quelmomento.

I troll avevano un aspettocaratteristico. Avevanolunghi nasi ricurvi, solo quat-tro dita in ogni mano e inogni piede, e la maggior partedi loro aveva una lunga codadal folto pelo.

Alcuni troll eranogiganteschi mentre altrierano piccoli. Siraccontavano storie di trollcon due e persino con treteste e alcuni avevano addi-rittura un solo occhio nelmezzo della fronte grinzosa.Sul naso o sulla testa di altricrescevano alberi o muschio.

Sebbene fossero pelosi conil pelo lungo e ruvido e moltiavessero un aspetto cheincuteva terrore, siraccontava anche che fosserodi indole buona e ingenui.Così ingenui infatti, chepersino un contadinotto fur-bo poteva qualche volta gio-care loro qualche tiro bir-

bone. Nelle favole sonocomuni le storie di tali incon-tri con i troll.

La maggior parte dei trollvivevano per centinaia dianni. Tuttavia, dato che itroll erano di natura estrema-mente timida, la loro veraorigine, il loro modo di viv-ere, o quali tiri o sorprese ci sipotessero aspettare da lorosono sempre stati un mistero.

Tra i molti poteri sop-rannaturali dei troll c’era lacapacità di trasformarsi. Lefate delle favole - chiamate“Hulder” - sapevano tras-formarsi in fanciulle di unabellezza incredibile.Tuttavia, non riuscivano atogliersi la coda. I cacciatorie i figli dei contadini chevenivano attirati sullemontagne da queste fate, disolito controllavano che laloro bella non avesse la coda.

- As an expert, how would you describetrolls for someone who does not knowthem at all - what are they?- Trolls are supernatural beings, a strict-ly outdoor phenomenon, peculiar to theNordic countries. They are large, uglyand strong. We find them in the Nordiccountries, but even there they vary fromone country to the next. Finland hasnone, and Denmark only a few. Theyare rooted in folk tales and legends. Butthe troll is ever-changing. It haschanged more in the course of the pastfifty years than during the precedingthousand years. Since the thirtieschildren's literature in particular hascreated new roles for the troll and newideas about what it is like. The painterKittelsen's troll illustrations haveinspired this development.

- Does that mean that we can saythat the troll as we know itis a child of the 19th and 20thcenturies?- The troll as the supernatural fairy talefigure we associate with it today, yes.Many stories are known from other

countries, with the devil,fire-breathing dragons

or man-eating ogresas

their monsters. In Norway one or moretrolls have this function instead.

- Hold on a second, trolls have tails!- Only after 1884. That is whenKittelsen published his first illustrationsdepicting trolls, showing trolls withtails. Not till then did tellers of folk tal-es mention trolls with tails, inspired byKittelsen's drawings. So the trolldepended both on popular story-tellingand the use of these tales amongsophisticated people.

- So we can talk about trolls B.K.(beforeKittelsen) and after Kittelsen?- Before Kittelsen and after Kittelsen,since he was extremely important forthe image we have of trolls. Eckersberg,Norway's first troll illustrator, depictedthe trolls with devil-like features. Theywere dressed in leaves like savages - andhad no tail.Of course the idea of a troll with a tailwas not a far-fetched one. We knowthat other supernatural beings have tailstoo, so it is not hard to understand thatKittelsen also equipped his trolls in thatway.As for their looks, … Trolls are not sup-posed to be seen, are they? They are justthere, somewhere in the woods at night.

- You mentioned the changes undergoneby the troll. Can you describe them?- You see the way the troll has beentransformed into a sweet being, the trollas an ecological activist. Postcards withcute little troll children protecting elksagainst hunters. This is quite a new rolethat they never had in the folk tales.

- Does the troll evolve from being anenemy of culture to being a protectorof nature? What was the troll reallylike then, what was the point ofdeparture in olden times?- The troll represents destiny, the trollrepresents death. The trolls permitted

the survival of old culturalcharacteristics forbidden toNorwegians by the new religion.There is no better example of thereal meaning of trolls than

Kittelsen's illustration of the folk talecalled "Smørbukk". It depicts a lands-cape with forests, mountains and water -these elements are always presentaround trolls. The small farm lies in themiddle of this landscape, and representsman-made culture. Across the bridgecomes the huge ugly-looking troll, carry-ing its head under its arm and a rucksackon its back - all very typical of ancientideas of death. Then there is the littlefarm dog that barks, as dogs are supposedto do to announce an impending death.

- You said that the troll representeddeath. Death or the dead?- Maybe both. In his book Ghosts andApparitions in the Middle Ages ClaudeLecoteaux lists the recurringcharacteristics of the dead, and it isfrightening to see how much they havein common with ghosts and trolls. Atthe same time the troll representsimpending danger, of course.

- If I am to play the devil's advocate, orperhaps the troll's, do not theseaccounts simply show us that storytellersconstantly come up with new twists tothe old tales?- In olden times storytellers' tales werealways structured in the same way.Names and descriptions might vary, butthe old patterns were adhered to. Onthe other hand tradition implies changeas well, and the troll has been used incontradictory ways by different peoplewith different aims. There are manypeople who write about the troll, theNorwegian troll, which they had muchbetter call "my troll" since it has little orno connection with the troll of the folktales. But at the same time it is intere-sting for me as a research worker to seethe use made of the troll as a symbol. Itcan represent nature/children/strength/Norwegianhood… and amixture of all these.

- So the idea of the troll is far morecomplex that we generally believe?- Unfortunately, yes. When I first camehere from France I thought that a trollwas a troll. But we find that the troll is acultural construction, a product of ourimagination that has managed to sur-vive basically unchanged for 1000 years.That proves how deeply it is rooted inNorwegian culture. Of course there isthe problem of the lack of written sourc-es between the Norse period and that ofnational Romanticism, so that we justpresuppose a connection between thenand now.

- How do people react when you tellthem that your work is on trolls?- That depends on the way I tell them. IfI say that I work with trolls they smileand try to tell me all they know orbelieve concerning trolls. EspeciallyEarlier, when my spoken Norwegian wasnot very good, they often told me the

most elementary tales, even after I hadbeen working on the folk tales for acouple of years. When I finished mydoctorate people stopped smiling, sincethen "it had to be serious research".When my five-year-old son saw thebook with a beautiful drawing of a trollon the cover he was quite excited aboutit. But when he opened it he was disap-pointed - "it was all letters". It is seriousof course. When we find so many basicideas from Norwegian culture connectedwith trolls we are bound to take it seri-ously.

- What are you doing at the moment?- I am learning to understand therelationship between the trolls andsocial development, in order to see thetroll belief as a process. We are almostin duty bound to have a different pointof view from the troll industry, whichprofits from this culture financially. Wedemystify and explain, which is almostthe opposite of focussing on them andselling them to tourists. In one waydoing research on trolls is not particular-ly pleasant - it is no different from rese-arch on any other subject.

- How do you feel about trolls?- Believe it or not, no one has everasked me that question before. I likethem, they are nice beings. We have alot in common, and we have been work-ing together for seven years. They aremulti-faceted figures, they are not alwaysthe same, so it is always exciting to meetthem anew.

One of Norway's greatest experts on trolls is French. She is VirginieAmelien from the Department of Cultural Studies at the University ofOslo. folk-tales. Parts of her thesis have been published as a 284-page-long book entitled: "Le troll et autres créatures surnaturelles" (Trollsand Other Supernatural Beings) by the French publisher BergInternational. We meet her fresh from a Nordic symposium on trollsorganized at the Soria Moria conference hotel (where else, since thisname is associated with Norwegian folk tales?), seven months pregnant.Now she is working on a pan-Nordic project about supernatural beingsin the Nordic countries, how our belief in them changes, and not leasthow it functions. What interests her most about trolls and pixies is theimportance of supernatural beings for society and our culture.*«Troll og andre overnaturlige vesener».

Wenn Sie als Experte diese Wesen jemandenbeschreiben müßten, der überhaupt keineVorstellung davon hat, was würden Sie sagen:Was ist ein Troll?Es dreht sich um ein speziell nordisches, über-natürliches Wesen, das mit der Natur verbundenist. Es ist groß, stark und häßlich. In den skandi-navischen Ländern unterscheiden sie sich vonLand zu Land, existieren z.B. nicht in Finnlandund kaum in Dänemark. Entstanden sind dieTrolle in Märchen und Sagen. Aber die Trolleverändern sich ständig. Seit den dreißiger Jahrenwurden besonders durch die Kinderbuchliteraturneue Trolle geschaffen und neue Auffassungenvon Trollen. Diese Entwicklung kann auf dieIllustrationen von Kittelsen zurückgeführt wer-den.

Man könnte also fast sagen, daß die Trolle erstim 19. und 20.Jahrhundert existieren?Wie man sie heute kennt, der Troll als über-natürliche Märchenfigur, ja. Man erzählt dieGeschichten, wie man sie aus anderen Ländernkennt, mit dem Teufel, feuerspeienden Drachenoder menschenfresserischen Ungeheuern. InNorwegen übernehmen dann ein oder mehrereTrolle diese Rollen.

Moment mal, Trolle haben doch einenSchwanz!Erst nach 1884. Da erschien Kittelsens ersteTroll-Illustration, in denen Trolle Schwänzehaben. Erst danach lassen die offensichtlich vonKittelsen inspirierten Märchenerzähler ihrenTrollen Schwänze wachsen. Auf diese Weisespiegelt das Aussehen des Trolls auch dasZusammenspiel von volkstümlicherErzählerkunst und literarischer Kultur wieder.

Man kann also wirklich von Trollen vorKittelsen und nach Kittelsen sprechen?Vor Kittelsen und nach Kittelsen, naja! Abergut, wenn es um die Trolle geht, spielt Kittelsenja eine extrem wichtige Rolle. Er schuf das Bild,das wir heute von den Trollen haben. Hingegenzeichnete Eckersberg, der erste Troll-Illustrator in Norwegen, seine Trolle mit dentypischen Gesichtszügen des Teufels. Auchwaren sie, wie die »Wilden«, nur mit Laub bek-leidet - und ohne Schwanz! Nun muß mansagen, daß die Vorstellung von einem Troll mitSchwanz eigentlich auf der Hand lag. Auchandere übernatürliche Wesen besitzen ja - wieallseits bekannt - einen Schwanz. Man verstehtalso leicht, warum Kittelsens Trolle ebenfallseinen Schwanz bekamen. Was das Aussehenangeht... Man soll doch den Troll gar nicht zuGesichtbekommen. Sie sind nur einfach da, im Waldund in der Nacht.

Sie sprachen von dem veränderten Aussehen derTrolle. Wie äußert sich so etwas? Es gibtVeränderungen, z.B. gibt es nun niedliche Trolleoder den Troll als Umweltschützer. Sie findenPostkarten mit kleinen Trollkindern, die denElchvor dem Jäger schützen. Das ist eine vollständigneue Rolle, die es in den Märchen nicht gibt.

Der Troll verwandelt sich von einemKulturfeind zu einem Beschützer der Natur?Wie war der Troll nun wirklich, warum entstanddiese Figur eigentlich in alten Zeiten? Trollbedeutet Schicksal, Troll bedeutet Tod. Mit

Hilfe der Trollfigur hielt man Züge einer altenund speziellen Kultur lebendig, zu der sich dieNorweger auf Grund der Christianisierung nichtlänger verhalten durften. Das, was Trolleeigentlich bedeuten, findet sich nirgendwo bess-er illustriert, als in Kittelsens Zeichnung zu demMärchen »Smörbukk«.* Hier herrscht die Naturmit Wald, Gebirge und Wasser, wie immer inVerbindung mit Trollen. Mitten in dieserLandschaft liegt dann der kleine Bauernhof, dievom Menschen geschaffene Kultur. Auf demWeg, über die Brücke kommen die großen,starken und häßlichen Trolle, mit dem Kopfunter dem Arm und dem Sack auf demRücken,alles Kennzeichen alter Vorstellungenvom Tod. Und beachten Sie auch den kleinenHofhund, der vor dem Tod warnt.*»Butterbauch«, Figur aus Asbjörnsen und MoesVolksmärchensammlung

Sie sagen, Troll bedeutet Tod: den Tod oder dieToten?Vielleicht sowohl als auch. Claude Lecoteauxhat in seinem Buch »Gespenster und Geister imMittelalter« die Eigenschaften gesammelt,welche Tote durchgängig zugeschrieben werden.Es ist erschreckend zu beobachten, wievieledieser speziellen Kennzeichen wir bei Geisternund Trollen finden. Gleichzeitig ist der Troll jaeine drohende Vaterfigur.

Ich spiele mal den »Advocatus Diaboli«, denAnwalt des Teufels oder vielleicht besser desTrolls: Sind all diese Veränderungen nicht nurein Beispiel dafür, daß die Erzähler ständigNeues erfinden?In den alten Zeiten besaßen die Erzählungenfeste Strukturen. Man veränderte Namen undBeschreibungen, behielt aber die Strukturen bei.Nun muß man ja sagen, daß Tradition auchVeränderung bedeutet, und gerade der Troll wirdextrem widersprüchlich benutzt, nämlich vonallen, für alle mögliche Zwecke. Es gibt vieleMenschen, die über den norwegischen Trollschreiben, den sie jedoch besser »meinen Troll«nennen sollten, weil er nicht besonders viel mitden Trollen der Märchen zu tun hat. Aber gle-ichzeitig ist es für mich als Wissenschaftlerininteressant zu sehen, wie man den Troll alsSymbol benutzt. Er kann Natur, Kinder, Stärke,Norwegen bedeuten...und eine Mischung aus alldiesem.

Troll ist also ein weitaus mehr umfassendereBezeichnung als man glaubt?Leider ja. Als ich aus Frankreich hierher kam,dachte ich, ein Troll ist ein Troll. Aber wir wis-sen, daß der Troll eine kulturelle Konstruktionist, eine Fantasie, die sich in ihren Strukturendurch tausend Jahre hindurch erhalten hat. Indiesem Falle kann man wirklich von einertiefen, kulturellen Verankerung sprechen. Aberwir haben ja dieses Problem mit den fehlendenschriftlichen Quellen zwischen altnordischerZeit und der Nationalromantik, was bewirkt, daßwir einen Zusammenhang zwischen damals undheute postulieren.

Wie reagieren die Leute, wenn Sie erzählen, daßSie sich mit Trollen beschäftigen?Das kommt darauf an, wie ich mich präsentiere.Wenn ich sage, daß ich mich mit Trollenbeschäftige, dann lächelt man und versucht miralles zu erzählen, was man über Trolle weiß oderzu wissen meint. Speziell früher, als ich nochnicht gut Norwegisch konnte, kam man oft underzählte mir von den grundlegenden Dingen,selbst als ich mich schon ein paar Jahre mitTrollen beschäftigt hatte. Als ich mit derDoktorarbeit fertig wurde, lächelten die Leutenicht mehr, weil »es sich ja wohl um etwasSeriöses handelt«. Als mein fünfjähriger Jungedas fertige Buch mit der schönen Zeichnungeines Trolls auf dem Umschlag sah, wurde erneugierig. Als er dann das Buch öffnete, war erenttäuscht, weil da »nur Buchstaben« waren.Aber die sind eben seriös. Es gibt allerdings vieleGründe, die grundlegenden Vorstellungen in derIdee vom Troll als Züge oder Bestandteil einernorwegischen Kultur ernstzunehmen.

Womit beschäftigen Sie sich zur Zeit?Den Trollglauben in Zusammenhang mit derEntwicklung der Gesellschaft zu studieren, alsProzeß zu sehen. Wir sind ja durch unserProgramm verpflichtet, Trolle aus einemanderen Gesichtswinkel zu betrachten als etwadie Troll- Industrie, die Kapital aus der Kulturschlägt. Wir entmystifizieren und erklären,während die Industrie spekulative Neugierde fürein Phänomen wecken will und diesesPhänomen dann als Gegenstand an dieTouristen verkauft. Eigentlich ist über Trolle zuforschen nichts Besonderes, eigentlich ist es wiejedes andere Forschungsfeld.

Was halten Sie von Trollen?Das hat mich wahrhaftig noch nie jemandgefragt. Ich mag sie. Sie sind vertraulicheWesen. Wir haben viel gemeinsam, und wirhaben sieben Jahre zusammengearbeitet. DieTrolle sind Figuren mit vielen Seiten, nie isteiner wie der andere. Also ist es immer wiederspannend, sie zu treffen.

Interview avec Virginie Amelien,par Knut A. BergUne des plus grandes expertes en trolls enNorvège est française. C'est Virginie Amelien, àl'Institut des Etudes Culturelles de l'Universitéd'Oslo. En 1994, elle a passé son doctorat à laSorbonne. Son sujet: les trolls dans les contespopulaires norvégiens. Des extraits de sa thèseont été publiés par la maison d'édition françaiseBerg International, dans un livre de 284 pagesintitulé "Le troll et les autres créatures surnatur-elles". Lorsque nous la rencontrons, elle sort d'unséminaire organisé par les pays nordiques sur lestrolls dans leurs pays. Il va sans dire que ceséminaire a eu lieu à l'hôtel Soria Moria, dont lenom vient d'un conte célèbre. Elle est enceintede sept mois, et n'a que peu de temps à nousconsacrer. En ce moment, elle travaille sur unprojet nordique sur les créatures surnaturellesdans les pays nordiques, comment la foi en euxchange et surtout comment elle fonctionne. Carson intérêt pour les trolls et les lutins est motivépar son désir de comprendre l'importance descréatures surnaturelles pour la société et dans laculture.

-Vous qui êtes une spécialiste des trolls - comm-ent les décririez-vous pour quelqu'un qui ne lesconnaîtrait pas du tout; qu'est-ce qu'un troll?- C'est un être surnaturel spécifiquement nordi-que, lié à la nature. Il est grand, laid et fort. Il yen a dans les pays nordiques, mais même là ilssont différents d'un pays à l'autre. Vous n'entrouverez pas en Finlande, et presque pas auDanemark. Mais le troll change constamment.Au cours des dernières cinquante années il s'esttransformé plus que dans les mille annéesprécédentes. Depuis les années trente, c'estsurtout la littérature des enfants qui a créé denouveaux rôles pour les trolls et changé notrefaçon de les concevoir. Ce développement a étéinspiré par les trolls que nous trouvons dans lesillustrations de Kittelsen.

- Cela veut-il dire que seuls les19e et 20e siècles sont les siècles du troll?- Si on considère le troll comme le personnagesurnaturel des contes populaires tel qu'on le voitgénéralement, oui. Beaucoup de contes sontconnus d'autres pays, dans lesquels le monstren'est pas un troll, mais le diable, des dragonscrachant le feu ou des ogres mangeurs de chairhumaine. En Norvège, c'est un troll qui détientces rôles.

- Mais les trolls ont une queue, non?- Seulement depuis 1884. C'est alors queKittelsen publie ses premières illustrations detrolls, où les trolls avaient une queue. Ce n'estqu'après cette date que les conteurs parlent detrolls à queue, inspirés par les dessins deKittelsen. Le troll a donc été le résultat del'interaction entre la culture populaire etl'utilisation de celle-ci par la culture des élites.

- Nous pouvons ainsi parler d'un calendrier"avant K" et "après K" pour les trolls?- Avant et après Kittelsen, oui, en ce quiconcerne les trolls, puisqu'il a été d'une trèsgrande importance pour notre façon de conce-voir les trolls. Eckersberg, le premier illustrateurde trolls en Norvège, leur donne des visages auxtraits diaboliques. Les trolls sont vêtus de feuillescomme des "sauvages" - et ils n'ont pas de queue.Il est vrai que l'idée d'un troll pourvu d'unequeue n'était pas loin. Nous savons que d'autresêtres surnaturels ont une queue, de sorte qu'oncomprend aisément que les trolls de Kittelsen enaient reçu une aussi.Quant à leur aspect physique,… N'oublions pasque nous ne sommes pas censés voir les trolls. Ilssont là, dans la forêt, dans la nuit, c'est tout.

- Vous avez mentionné les transformations quele troll a subies. Pouvez-vous en donner quelquesexemples?- Le troll a été transformé en un être mignon, letroll est devenu un militant écologique. Il y a descartes postales montrant de gentils petits enfantsde trolls qui protègent les élans contre les chass-eurs. Voilà un rôle qu'ils n'ont jamais eu dans lescontes.

- C'est-à-dire que le troll n'est plus celui qui atta-que la culture, mais un protecteur de la nature?Comment a été le troll à l'origine, au point dedépart?- Le troll représente la destinée, le trollreprésente la mort. Les trolls ont permis la survied'anciens traits culturels interdits par la nouvellereligion.Rien ne montre mieux la vraie signification dutroll que l'illustration que Kittelsen a faite pourle conte "Smørbukk". On y voit la nature avec saforêt, sa montagne et son lac, comme toujoursdans les histoires de trolls. Dans ce paysage setrouve la petite ferme, qui représente la culturecréée par les hommes. Puis on voit le grand troll,laid et fort, qui traverse le pont, la tête sous lebras et un sac sur le dos, tous des éléments queles anciens associaient à la mort. De plus, le petitchien de la ferme aboie, comme doivent le faireles chiens pour prévenir d'une mort prochaine.

- Vous dites que les trolls représentaient la mort.La mort ou les morts?- Peut-être les deux. Dans son livre sur lesfantômes et les revenants au Moyen Age, ClaudeLecoteaux énumère les traits typiques des morts,et il est effrayant de voir combien de traitscaractéristiques sont communs aux revenants etaux trolls. En même temps, le troll représente undanger imminent, bien sûr.

- Si vous me permettez de jouer l'avocat dudiable, ou peut-être du troll, ces changements nemontrent-ils pas simplement que les conteursinventent toujours de nouvelles choses? Quetous les conteurs aiment bien y ajouter du leur?- Les conteurs d'autrefois avaient toujours unestructure bien rigide pour leurs récits. Ils enchangeaient les noms et les descriptions, tout engardant les structures. Il faut y ajouter que toutetradition implique un changement, bien sûr, etle troll a été utilisé par tous et dans tous les butsd'une façon extrêmement ambivalente. Il y abeaucoup de gens qui écrivent sur les trolls, qu'ilsferaient beaucoup mieux d'appeler "mon troll"étant donné que le rapport avec les trolls descontes populaires est loin d'être évident. Mais enmême temps il est intéressant pour moi, en tantque chercheur, de voir l'utilisation qui se fait destrolls comme symbole. Ils peuvent représenter lanature/l'enfant/ la force/ le spécifiquement nor-végien… et un mélange de tout cela.

- Le troll est donc un concept bien plus compli-qué qu'on ne le croit?- Oui, malheureusement. Lorsque j'ai quitté laFrance pour venir ici je croyais qu'un troll étaitun troll, voilà tout. Mais nous voyons que le trollest une construction culturelle et un produit del'imagination qui réusssit à garder ses structuresintactes pendant mille ans. Cela prouve combienil est profondément ancré dans cette culture.D'un autre côté, nous avons le problème dumanque de sources écrites entre l'époque nor-roise et celle du romantisme national, ce qui faitque nous postulons une continuité entre les deuxépoques.

-Comment les gens réagissent-ils quand vousleur dites que vous travaillez sur les trolls?- Cela dépend de comment je le leur dis. Si je disque je travaille sur les trolls ils sourient et essai-ent de me raconter tout ce qu'ils savent ou pens-ent des trolls. Avant, quand mon norvégienn'était pas très bon, ils sortaient souvent lesrécits tout à fait élémentaires, même quandj'étudiais les contes depuis quelques années déjà.Mais quand j'ai fini mon doctorat les gens ontcessé de sourire, car alors "il fallait que cela soitdu sérieux". Lorsque mon fils de cinq ans a vu lelivre avec un beau dessin de troll sur lacouverture il a eu hâte de l'ouvrir. Mais il a ététrès déçu en l'ouvrant, puisqu'"il n'y avait quedes caractères". Car c'est du sérieux. Etant donnéque les trolls représentent des idées qui sontfondamentales dans la culture norvégienne ,nous avons toute raison de les prendre au série-ux.

- Que faites-vous en ce moment?- J'essaie de comprendre les trolls en rapportavec le développement de la société, pour voir lafoi dans les trolls comme un processus. Noussommes presque obligés d'avoir un autre point devue que l'industrie des trolls, qui profitent finan-cièrement de cette culture. Nous démystifions etexpliquons, ce qui est presque le contraired'attirer l'attention des gens sur eux et les vendreaux touristes. D'une certaine manière faire untravail de recherchesur les trolls n'a rien de particulièrement pass-ionnant. C'est un sujet de recherche comme unautre.

Che ne pensa dei troll?Infatti è la prima volta che mi hanno fatto

Da aggressore alla cultura il troll diventaprotettore della natura?Ma in origine nei tempi antichi, com'era iltroll?Il troll è il destino. Il troll è la morte.Mediante i troll, si potevano rappresentarele vecchie caratteristiche culturali dei nor-vegesi che erano proibite dalla religione.La migliore descrizione possibile di cosa èun troll si trova nell'illustrazione diKittelsen della fiaba "Smørbukk"("Mangiaburro"). Lì si vedono i boschi, imonti e i laghi, la solita scenografia natur-ale dei troll. In questo paesaggio si trova lapiccola fattoria, opera degli uomini. Sulponte sta arrivando il trollone brutto eforte, la testa sotto il braccio e lo zaino allespalle, tutti tratti delle antiche concezionidella morte. E si vede il piccolo cane daguardia che abbaia, come deve fare perannunciare la morte.

Dice che i troll rappresentavano la morte.Allora la morte oppure i morti?Forse tutti e due. Nel suo libro su "glispettri e gli spiriti del Medio Evo", ClaudeLecoteaux fa un elenco dei tratti generalidei morti, e fa paura vedere quantecaratteristiche hanno in comune gli spiritie i troll. Nello stesso tempo il troll rappre-senta anche il pericolo incombente.

Se vorrei fare l'avvocato del diavolo,oppure il troll, non saranno questi cambia-menti forse soltanto ancora un esempio deinarratori che inventano sempre qualcosadi nuovo? E che ogni narratore vuole pre-sentare una versione originale?I narratori di prima avevano le lorostrutture fisse delle fiabe. Cambiavano inomi e le descrizioni, ma la strutturarimaneva la stessa. C'è anche da dire chela tradizione è cambiamento, e il troll èusato da tutti a scopi estremamenteambigui. Ci sono molte persone chescrivono del troll, il troll norvegese, el'avrebbero dovuto chiamare "il mio troll",perché non ha quasi niente a che fare conil troll delle fiabe. Ma nello stesso tempo èinteressante per me da studiosa, vederel'uso del troll come simbolo. Può simbo-leggiare la natura/il fanciullo/la forza/ilnorvegese .. e anche una mescolanza ditutto questo.

Il troll è dunque una nozione più estesa diquanto si potrebbe pensare?Purtroppo sì. Quando sono venuta quidalla Francia, pensavo che un troll era untroll. E basta. Ma troviamo che il troll èuna costruzione culturale, una fantasia, ingrado di mantenere le sue strutture invari-ate per un millennio. Questo da mostra ilsuo forte ancoraggio culturale. Però, c'è ilproblema dello scarso materiale scritto trai tempi norreni e il romanticismo nazion-ale, che ci fa postulare una relazione traallora e oggi.

Com'è la reazione quando racconta chestai facendo delle ricerche sui troll?Dipende dal modo in cui lo dico. Se dicoche lavoro con i troll, sorridono cercandodi raccontarmi tutto quello che sanno ocredono dei troll. All'inizio soprattutto,quando non sapevo tanto bene il nor-vegese, mi facevano spesso le storie tuttoelementari, anche quando avevo fatto dueanni di studi delle fiabe. Ma dopo la liberadocenza hanno smesso di sorridere, perché"deve essere una cosa seria". A vedere ilmio libro con il bel disegno di un trollsulla copertina, mio figlio di cinque anni fuansioso di aprirlo. Ma l'interiore era unadelusione; "niente immagini, soltano lett-ere!". Perché è veramente una cosa seria.Con buone ragioni si prendono sul serio leidee fondamentali dei troll nella culturanorvegese.

Adesso cosa stai facendo?Cerco di capire i troll nello sviluppo soci-ale, di considerare la credenza nei trollcome un processo. Troll festival 1996

Magic»The festival began onFriday at 6:00 p.m. with aspecial programme forchildren and theinhabitants of the village.About 400 children camewith their parents, so over1000 people attended thearrival of the big troll"Haribol". They broughtwith them troll drawingsand prizes were given forthe best among them, inage groups 4-5, 6-7, 8-9,and 10-11.

Then they went up thehill into the wood wherethe actors' group "de spe-elman" performed apleasant play about twotroll families and a farmerwho fell in love with alady troll. After somerefreshments theyreturned to the village justat dusk, carrying candlesand lampions, a beautifulsight indeed.

The general public cameon the Saturday, again at6:00 p.m., with visitorsfrom all over the country,so that more than 1000people were able to seethe big troll "Haribol". Agroup of local peopledressed up in ancient uni-forms introduced "TrollØl" beer. Then we went

on an educational naturewalk through the woods.Here, too, the trolls werepresent.

On our return to the vil-lage there were prizes forthose who could guess theweight of Haribol, thelargest troll. The prizeswere given by HenrikFlaarønning after he hadperformed a "Norwegian"song together with AndersFlaarønning. These twoattended the festival along

with Ola

Flaarønning, so all ourdirectors were present atthe first internationalfestival of its kind, accom-panied by five of their sal-es representatives.

By 11:00 p.m. the trollbeer was gone. Fortunatelythis beer also comes inbottles. The atmospherewas fantastic and the pre-sence of so many troll lov-ers made the event a greatsuccess. Even the localpriest, pastor Kurris, cameto the festivities, whichlasted well into the smallhours. He also gave a

short speech in which hestressed how important itis that people use theirimagination and makethings happen.

The festival made thenews, since one radio

network and two televis-ion companies reported onit nationwide. They eventurned up with a film crewduring the festival.Everybody is now busymaking plans for the 1997version!

Holland, 20.-21.September:Trollfestival »Myth and Magic«;»Mythos und Magie«

Das Festival begann am Freitag abend um18 Uhr mit einem besonderen Programmfür die Kinder und Anwohner. Ungefähr400 Kinder kamen mit ihren Eltern, sodaß über tausend Menschen bei derAnkunft des großen Trolls »Haribol«zugegen waren. Sie brachten Zeichnungendes Trolls mit, und die besten der jeweils4-5, 6-7, 8-9 und 10-11jährigen bekameneinen Preis.

Anschließend marschierte man die Hügelhinauf in die umliegenden Wälder. Hierzeigte die Theatergruppe »Spielmann« einlustiges Stück über zwei Trollfamilien undeinen Bauern, der sich in einen weib-lichen Troll verliebt. Nach einem kleinenUmtrunk erreichte man die Stadt gerademit Einbruch der Dunkelheit. Die leucht-enden Lampions und Kerzen sahen sehrschön aus.

Bei dem Fest am Sonnabend, es begannebenfalls um 18 Uhr, konnte wiederumjedermann teilnehmen - und man kam ausdem ganzen Land. Noch einmal begrüßtenüber tausend Menschen den großen Troll»Haribol« und die »Nationalgarde«,welche das »Trollbier« präsentierte. Dannging wieder in den Wald, wo der örtlicheNaturschutzverein eigens eine Route fest-gelegt hatte, auf der man auch etwas ler-nen konnte. Aber natürlich spukten auchhier die Trolle!

Im Städtchen zurück, wurden die Prämienan die Gewinner verteilt, die das Gewichtdes größten aller Trolle, von Haribolrichtig geschätzt hatten. Die Gewinneverteilte Henrik Flaarönning, nachdem erzusammen mit Anders Flaarönning einnorwegisches Volkslied zum Bestengegeben hatte. Die beiden betreutenzusammen mit Ola Flaarönning dasFestival, so daß alle Chefs und fünf ihrerVertreter bei dem ersten internationalenFestival dieser Art zugegen waren.

Gegen 11 Uhr war das Trollbier aus-getrunken, aber glücklicherweise ist diesBier ja auch in Flaschen erhältlich. DieAtmosphäre war fantastisch und alle

Trollfans machten das Festival zu einemgroßen Erfolg. Sogar der örtliche Pfarrer,Pastor Kurris, besuchte das Fest, das bistief in die Nacht andauerte. In seinerkurzen Ansprache hob er den Wert men-schlicher Fantasie hervor und daß esschön sei, wenn die Menschen diesefriedlich ausleben würden.

Auch die Medien beachteten dasTrollfestival. Ein Radioprogramm undzwei nationale Fernsehgesellschaftenberichteten teilweise sogar live. Jetztfreuen und bereiten sich alle auf das näch-ste Trollfestival im Jahre 1997 vor!

Les festivités ont commencé par un pro-gramme spécial pour les enfants et leshabitants du village, le vendredi soir à sixheures. Environ quatre cents enfants sontvenus, accompagnés par leurs parents, desorte qu'ils ont été plus d'un millier àassister à l'arrivée du grand troll "Haribol".Ils avaient apporté leurs dessins de trolls,et les meilleurs ont été récompensés pardes prix. Il y avait quatre catégories pourles différents âges, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 et 10-11ans.

Puis ils ont gravi la colline et sont entrésdans la forêt, où la troupe de théâtre "despeelman" leur a joué une pièce bienagréable sur deux familles de trolls et unfermier amoureux d'une dame troll. Aprèsquelques rafraîchissements, ils sont retour-nés au village à la tombée de la nuit,tenant des flambeaux à la main, ce quiétait très joli.

Le samedi aussi, on a commencé à18 heur-es. Venus de tous les coins du pays, unmillier de personnes ont pu voir le grandtroll "Haribol". La bière "Troll øl" a étéintroduite par un groupe d'enthousiastesvêtus d'uniformes anciens. Puis on a faitune petite promenade dans la forêt, où lesentier avait été préparé par uneassociation locale dans le but de familiaris-er les promeneurs avec la flore et la fauneainsi que les traditions culturelles de larégion. Même les trolls étaient présents!

A notre retour au village, il y a eu des prixpour ceux qui arrivaient à deviner le poidsde Haribol, le troll le plus grand. La distri-bution des prix a été faite par M. HenrikFlaarønning, qui avait au préalable chantéune chanson "norvégienne" avec M.Anders Flaarønning. M. Ola Flaarønningétait également présent au festival, desorte que tous nos trois directeurs ontparticipé au premier festival internationalde ce type, accompagnés par cinq parmileurs agents.

A onze heures du soir il n'y avait plus debière. Heureusement, cette bière se vendaussi en bouteilles. L'ambiance était extra-ordinaire et la présence de nombreuxamateurs de trolls contribuait à la réussitede l'événement. Même le pasteur local,pastor Kurris, s'est joint aux festivités quiont duré jusqu'à tard dans la nuit. Dans unpetit discours, il a souligné combien il estimportant que les gens fassent preuved'imagination et d'initiative pour créer desévénements comme celui-là.

Le festival a attiré l'attention des médias,puisqu'une station de radio et deuxchaînes de télévision en ont parlé danstout le pays. Ils sont même venus filmerpendant le festival. Maintenant tout lemonde est en train de faire des projetspour une reprise en 1997!

Un quattrocentobambini arrivarono con i genitori, e allorapiù di mille persone parteciparonoall'arrivo del grande troll "Haribold",portando disegni del troll, e furono pre-miati i bambini più bravi di 4 a 5 anni, di6 a 7 anni, di 8 a 9 anni e di 10 a 11 anni.

Poi scesero la collina ed entrarono nelbosco dove il gruppo teatrale "de speel-man" presentò un bello spettacolo di duefamiglie di troll e di un contadino ches'innamorò di una signorina troll. Dopouna bibita, all'imbrunire tornarono nelpaese, tutti portando fiaccole. Era

bellissimo a vedere.

Il sabato, anche alle sei di sera, ricomin-ciò, e da tutto il paese arrivarono più dimille persone per incontrare il grande troll"Haribol". L'introduzione fu eseguita dalla«guardia nazionale» della «TROLL ØL»('la birra dei troll'), e poi si e fatta unapasseggiata nel bosco, gestita da unasocietà naturalista, e c'erano anche i"troll".

Al ritorno nel paese, c'erano premi per chipotesse indovinare quanto pesava Haribol,il troll più grande. A distribuire i premic'era il signor Henrik Flaarønning, dopoaver cantato una canzone "norvegese"insieme col signor Anders Flaarønning. Idue parteciparono al festival con il signorOla Flaarønning, e così tutti i direttori,assieme a cinque dei loro commercianti,furono presenti al primo festival di questotipo.

Alle undici la birra dei troll era finita. Perfortuna ce l`abbiamo anche in bottiglie.C'era un'atmosfera meravigliosa e grazie aitanti amatori di troll quest'evento è statoun grande successo. Anche il prete delluogo, il reverendo Kurris, venne apartecipare alla festa che durò fino a tardi.Fece anche un piccolo discorso, nel qualedisse com'è importante in questo mondousare la nostra immaginazione e realizzarla.

Il festival fu un fatto di cronaca, unastazione radio e due canali televisivinazionali lo hanno riportato. Vennero per-fino a filmare durante il festival. E adessotutti ne stanno progettando l'edizione '97!

Eine Geschichte aus Bergen:Gibt es Trolle?Verspielter Troll am Werk?Er bekam wirklich einen Schreck, der Chef des EPA-Ladens an der »Bystasjonen«, als er 1996an einem Montag morgen die Türen seines Ladens öffnete. Mitten auf dem Fußboden hattejemand tonnenschwere Felsen aufgehäuft. Aber das war doch unmöglich! Der Laden besitzteine Alarmanlage und wird von einer Wachgesellschaft kontrolliert. Waren übermenschlicheKräfte am Werk? Hatte hier ein Troll gespielt? Nein, diesmal waren es nur die Kunststudenten...

Wann kommen eigentlich die Trolle?

Wenn der Sturm dunklen Tannenwald in wilden Herbstnächten peitscht -dann kommen die Trolle.

Une histoire de BergenLes trolls existent-ils?Les trolls auraient-ils déplacé des rochers?Lorsque le propriétaire du magasin EPA à la gare routière de Bergen ouvrit les portes de sonmagasin un lundi matin en 1996, il reçut le choc de sa vie. Au milieu du magasin, on avaitdéposé quelques tonnes de pierres énormes. Le magasin est doté d'un système d'alarme, et desgardiens passent régulièrement. Ce qu'il voyait était donc tout à fait incroyable. Serait-ce lestrolls, pour qui rien n'est impossible? Non, cette fois les responsables n'étaient que quelquesétudiants de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts…

Les trolls existent-ils vraiment?

In mezzo al pavimento del negozio qualcuno aveva collocatoun paio di tonnellate di macigni. Il negozio è fornito di allarme e c'è anche il servizio divigilanza. Ma questo non è possibile. Versando la quota di iscrizione al club riceverete:- gratuitamente un Troll Socio 1997 in Edizione speciale- l'edizione semestrale della rivista «Troll Magazine»- Il nostro famoso catalogo (edizioni dei troll

presenti e passati).

La rivista «Troll Magazine» conterrà infomazioni su:- un'ampla gamma di argomenti relativi ai troll- i nuovi modelli della collezione attuale Ny Form- i modelli precedenti e le edizioni limitate- le feste e i raduni dei troll- editonali sull'artista delle statuette- suggerimenti partisolari da parte di altri collezionisti- una rubrica di corrispondenza con lettori- il troll nella mitologia norvegese e nei racconti popolani

L'associazione è valida per un anno (dal 1° gennalo al 31 dice-mbre). Primo numero della rivista del troll e il Troll Socio1997 in edizione speciale vi verranno recapitati da 4 a 8 setti-mane dopo il ricevimento del presente modulo di adesione edella quota associativa. L'invio della rivista inizlzerè presumib-limente in febbario del 1997.
