Today we enter the holiest of weeks. It is time for silent prayer. It is time for contemplation of what Jesus was willing to do for us, in order that we might re-enter right relationship with God. Let's pray with and for one another.

On a practical note, I wanted to explain a change that we will make this year on Holy Thursday in the rite of the "washing of the feet". Pope Francis has asked that the twelve people selected to have their feet washed by the priest be representative of all of the people of God, not just men. Pope Francis explained that the change is being made throughout the world, “so that the rite might express more fully the meaning of Jesus’s gesture in the Cenacle, His giving of Himself unto the end for the salvation of the world, His limitless charity”. The Pope continues: “After careful consideration, I have decided to make a change to the Roman Missal. I therefore decree that the section according to which those persons chosen for the washing of the feet must be men or boys, so that from now on the Pastors of the Church may choose the participants in the rite from among all the members of the People of God." How blessed are we as Catholics to have a Pope who guides us with such care and love.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD Sunday Gospel: Luke 23: 1-49

Father Oscar Romero was a timid, middle-level church bureaucrat in El Salvador. He silently went along with the wealthiest Salvadorians, who condemned all efforts to help the poor. Under their orders, the military shot strikers, union organizers, human rights activists, teachers, priests, and religious, and death squads freely roamed the countryside, raping, torturing, and killing. Romero was named Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. When a crowd protesting blatant election fraud was attacked by soldiers in the capital city’s main square, the new Archbishop neither intervened nor protested. Then came a sudden turning point: Father Rutilio Grande was murdered along with an elderly man and a boy. The Archbishop knew the Jesuit priest personally. He asked for an official inquiry into the deaths. He continued asking questions and became a marked man. Mail arrived daily at his office saying, “We’re going to drink your blood!” “We’ll crush you to pieces!” and worse. In 1979, Romero presented the Pope with extensive reports describing assassinations, disappearances, and human rights abuses in El Salvador. On March 24, 1980, Romero was celebrating Mass. At the end of his homily he said. “Those who surrender to the service of the poor through love of Christ will live like the grain of wheat that dies. The harvest comes because of the grain that dies. We know that every effort to improve society, above all when society is so full of injustice and sin, is an effort that God blesses, that God wants, that God demands of us.” He was killed with a single sniper shot to the heart. To put other people first is to serve Christ himself, regardless of the risk.

RIFLESSIONE SULLA PAROLA DI DIO Vangelo della Domenica: Luca 23: 1-49

Festeggiamo oggi l’entrata messianica di Gesù a Gerusalemme; in ricordo del suo trionfo, benediciamo le palme e leggiamo il racconto della sua passione e della sua morte. È il profeta Isaia con il suo terzo cantico sul servo sofferente di Iahvè che ci prepara ad ascoltare questo passo del Vangelo. La sofferenza fa parte della missione del servo. Essa fa anche parte della nostra missione di cristiani. Non può esistere un servo coerente di Gesù se non con il suo fardello, come ci ricorda il salmo di oggi. Ma nella sofferenza risiede la vittoria. “Egli spogliò se stesso, assumendo la condizione di servo, umiliò se stesso, facendosi obbediente fino alla morte, e alla morte di croce”. E, come il suono trionfale di una fanfara, risuonano le parole che richiamano l’antico inno cristiano sulla kenosi citato da san Paolo: “Per questo Dio l’ha esaltato al di sopra di tutto”. L’intera gloria del servo di Iahvè è nello spogliarsi completamente, nell’abbassarsi, nel servire come uno schiavo, fino alla morte. La parola essenziale è: “Per questo”. L’elevazione divina di Cristo è nel suo abbassarsi, nel suo servire, nella sua solidarietà con noi, in particolare con i più deboli e i più provati. Poiché la divinità è l’amore. E l’amore si è manifestato con più forza proprio sulla croce, sulla croce dalla quale è scaturito il grido di fiducia filiale nel Padre. “Dopo queste parole egli rese lo spirito”, e noi ci inginocchiamo - secondo la liturgia della messa - e ci immergiamo nella preghiera o nella meditazione. Questo istante di silenzio totale è essenziale, indispensabile a ciascuno di noi. Che cosa dirò al Crocifisso? A me stesso? Al Padre?

REFLEXIONEMOS LA PALABRA DE DIOS Evangelio del Domingo: Lucas 23: 1-49

El padre Oscar Romero era un sacerdote tímido y hasta cierto punto un burócrata eclesiástico en El Salvador. Calladamente era solícito con los salvado-reños adinerados, los cuales condenaban todos los esfuerzos en ayuda de los pobres. Bajo las órdenes de esos ricos, los militares brutalizaban y mataban libremente a cualquiera que se saliera de la línea. A Romero lo nombran arzobispo de San Salvador en 1977 y nunca protesta ni interviene contra la violencia. Entonces llega su momento decisivo: Junto a dos compañeros más, un sacerdote que Romero conocía personalmente fue asesinado. Romero comenzó a cuestionar las cosas y se convirtió en un hombre señalado. Le presentó al papa reportes que detallaban los abusos contra los derechos humanos en El Salvador. En 1980, Romero se expresó así durante una Misa que celebraba: “Los que se entregan al servicio de los pobres por amor de Cristo vivirán como el grano de trigo que muere . . . La cosecha se da por el grano que muere . . .” Fue asesinado por un francotirador con una sola bala al corazón. Entregarse al servicio de las personas, cueste lo que cueste, es entregarse al servicio de Cristo mismo.
