Music Notes
If you were to stand on a street corner one day and ask each passer by: 'what music do you listen to'? They
might say, 'I listen to 90s music' or 'I like rap'. But what if someone said, 'Gregorian chant', You might think they were crazy! Lost in years past, Gregorian chant seems only to live in those far out reaches of old monasteries or secluded con-vents. It is one of the earliest forms of music in the Christian church. It consists of a single melody line, has no harmony, no counterpoint and is unmetered. It flows gently from one note to the next in a series of gentle waves staring off louder and ending softer. While Gregorian chant is usually sung in Latin, it was originally shaped dur-ing the Middle Ages by Greek, Hebrew and Syrian influences. It derives its name from Pope Gregory the Great who reigned from 590 to 604. Gregorian chant has the unique ability to transport a person's mind to another realm of meditative reality. Funny how this happens even when we are not altogether aware of the meaning of the words being sung. So, is Gregorian chant really lost? You'll find it interesting to know that it is actually not as lost as you might think. In fact, take a quick visit to the CD section of Barnes and Noble one day. Further still, go into your iTunes app and search, 'Gregorian Chant'. You might be in for a big surprise. Though seemingly lost in time on the surface, Gregorian chant has always been held in high esteem by the Catho-lic Church. We can hear it when we sing the Agnus Dei chant during Lent, the Salve Regina or even the Pange Lingua during Benediction or Holy Thursday. Since our liturgy is now usually said in the vernacular language, it is not too often used during regular masses. Gregorian chant is a beautiful mode of prayerful meditative music that can help us draw closer to the real pres-ence of Christ. So go ahead and listen to some Gregorian chant as you turn in for the evening and allow yourself to sleep in heavenly peace. Andrew Cardona, Director of Music Ministry
