Calling all artists – from professional to novice ‘Stuff of Life’ is an Art Exhibition with a difference. Initiated by White House Arts, it will take place

on 14 and 15 November 2015 at Stapleford Granary and offers an opportunity to everyone, all ages,

to take part and help raise funds for two chosen charities, Practical Action www.practicalaction.org

an international development charity and Rowan www.rowanhumberstone.co.uk, a Cambridge based

charity which provides creative opportunities for learning-disabled adults. The last exhibition raised

over £15,000 for charity.

Experienced artist or complete novice, you have the chance to create and exhibit an artwork in any

medium 2/3 D based on a 12”x 16” canvas and using the theme ‘Stuff of Life’. The entry fee is £10

which includes a 12” x 16”canvas and hanging fee. Completed canvases need to be submitted by 4

November and will be exhibited for £45.

Following Chesterton Choral Society’s successful and impressive

concert last March, when, before a large audience, members

performed Welsh composer Karl Jenkins’ well known mass ‘The

Armed Man’, the society is to stage a summer concert during the

forthcoming Chesterton Festival.

Music and songs, appropriate for the warm summer evenings, will be

presented and will include Vaughan Williams lovely ‘Serenade to

Music’.

News from the Churches

As with everyone, we are enjoying the

warm start to spring. Our annual plant sale

will take place the morning of Saturday 16

May in front of the church, with coffee and

cake available inside. Plants will be on sale

from 10am.

We are pleased to be part of the upcoming

Chesterton Festival by hosting a festival

concert on Saturday 28 June. Concert

details found elsewhere in this magazine.

We are also looking forward to the Big

Community Holiday Club, It will run from

Monday 24 to Thursday 27 August in the

mornings. If you are interested in hearing

St George’s Church

If you have passed St Andrew’s you will have seen that our ‘Access for All’ building works are well

underway (and we’re sorry that this has meant the church has had to be kept closed much of the time

– come June we’ll be wide open again). The £87,000 project includes reconfiguring the main entrance

to allow easy access for the disabled – and all of us, in fact. The stone floor has been very successfully

relaid (so that it looks as though it has always been there) and the timbers of the new draught lobby

are up – glass soon to be added. The vestries are still a debris-filled building site, but the shape of

our new toilet is emerging. Outside the path has been dug up in places: partly to alter the slopes but

also to investigate the drains. There are some blockages that may prove quite costly to sort out – we

shall see.

Meanwhile our church life continues and we continue to welcome new people to our church

community. Our New Voices choir has been able to attempt some ambitious – and very lovely –

music of late. On 14 June it will be singing the Messa Solennelle of Jean Langlais for our Sung Eucharist

(10am). But we also continue to have a wide range of services – formal and less formal – for all ages

and tastes. New to our programme this year has been Creative Church, once a month on Sunday

afternoons (3.30pm); as well as corporate worship, this provides an opportunity to move around the

church engaging in reflective craft and prayer/learning activities.

From the Registers

My name is Linda King and I

have now been in post at St

Georges Church, as their new

Church and Hall Manager,

since February. As with any job,

it takes time to gather

information to be able to fulfil

the duties required. I am very

grateful to all those so far who

have helped me and made me feel very welcome.

I am very excited to be working with Ruth Adams

as we look towards what could be achieved for

the future of our buildings, focusing on the

possibility of them becoming a Community Hub to

serve the local area.

Chesterton Methodist Church Just a little update from the Methodist Church –

we have recently received the results of a

redevelopment feasibility study, commissioned

jointly with our friends at CamSight. We have

just a little more thinking to do but we really do

hope that we shall be able to invite the local

community to come and see some plans soon,

and to hear your thoughts about them. We are

looking forward to hosting the Community &

Environment day in July – see the article

Community & Environment Day Saturday 18 July 2015 from 10.30am to 2.30pm

Two local landlords, Hundred Houses Society and City Homes (Cambridge City Council) along

with Chesterton Methodist Church are holding a Community and Environment Day.

Located in the grounds of Chesterton Methodist Church and covering the streets of Kinross

Road, Edinburgh Road, Stirling Close, Eastfields, Heath House, Freeman House, Davy House,

Scotland Road, Ashfield Road, Elmfield Road, Dundee Close, Dalton Square and Green End Road, the day will offer a

variety of opportunities and advice.

On the day, recycling skips for local residents will be available for the free disposal of bulky waste, metal, wood and

electrical goods, and a support team will be available on the day for those residents requiring help with large items. A local

environmental clean-up will also take place on the day, with volunteers welcome to pitch in.

During the day, residents will have the opportunity to visit our Take it or Leave it Stall - a chance to pass on things in good

condition that you don’t want any more and pick up something you do, for free! If something can’t be re-homed on the

day, it will be taken to a charity or sent for recycling where possible. We’ll also be on hand to pass on recycling advice and

free kitchen caddies will be available to help collect your food waste.

Also available to view will be the two landlords’ mutual exchange registers for tenants interested

in moving from their current home. Flyers will be delivered to the homes being covered prior to

the day, but all local residents are welcome to attend. Should you have any questions please

Lil Speed Award 2015 We are now looking for nominations for this year’s award, which recognises the contribution made by

volunteers to our Chesterton Community. The award is named after Lillian Speed who was an avid

Campaigner for Chesterton, who sadly died last year. Lil devoted her time to taking up community issues

including campaigning for better play facilities and helping to secure the construction of Brown's Field

Youth & Community Centre.

Open Mind at St Andrew’s Hall

Art In the Annexe Drawing Group – Meeting for

five weeks, beginning on Wednesday 10 June, 10.30 am

Although the Women’s Institute is seen as a thoroughly British organisation, not

everyone realizes that it actually started in Canada in 1897. A farmer’s wife, Adelaide

Hoodless, lost her fourth child after he drank contaminated milk and she was

convinced that, if she had had more knowledge, he need not have died. It became her

life’s work to improve the education of women and make domestic science and

hygiene subjects that should be recognized and properly taught.

However, it took a World War before the WI really took off in Britain. By 1915 it

was obvious more food was needed for the country and that the men who would

normally provide it were away fighting. The WI was established to educate rural

women, and to encourage young countrywomen to get involved in growing and

preserving food to help increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation. Education

and the sharing of skills have always been at the heart of the organisation, and this

remains true today.

Now in 2015 the WI celebrates its centenary and if you ask its members what they

get out of it, they will tell you friendship, fun and lots of opportunities to try things or

go places that they might never have been able to without the WI.

East Chesterton WI meets in Room 2 at St Andrew’s Hall, 7.30pm on the fourth

Tuesday of the month. So why not come along to our meeting on Tuesday 22

September as our guest and just see what we get up to! You’ll find a warm welcome
