PRINCIPAL’S REPORT…. Tuesday, 6 March will be remembered as a real highlight of the 2018 school year. What a day; What a privilege to be a part of; What a strong sense of community it engendered……. What a sense of the “Power of One” it promoted: one family, one extended family, one strong community and one very special little boy who is a Super Hero in our eyes. And the ‘boys in blue”, such a positive face to policing for us all to be a part of! Well done Panania Community. You are simply the best! Please see a summary of Finn’s adventures of the day on the back page. National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence On Friday, 16 March 2018, Australian schools will stand united in their communities to celebrate the eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018, schools are called to imagine a world free from bullying” and share their BIG IDEAS. As a school, we have registered for this important event and are ready to say 'Bullying. No Way!' with schools across the nation. This National Day is a positive day of action, bringing school communities together to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence. Let's Take a Stand Together. PSSA Sport – Season 1 PSSA commenced last week and good sportsmanship was shown by the students. This is just a gentle reminder that parents and spectators must not approach umpires or referees. Thank you for your support in this matter. With my very best wishes, Sandra Palmer. Congratulations to Ryleigh Delacour-Batch 4S and Scarlett McGraw 3AW who will be competing at the Little Athletics State Championships on Friday, 23 and Saturday, 24 March. CLEAN UP PANANIA 2018 On Thursday, 1 March a very dedicated band of teachers and students took action and cleaned up our school environment as part of Clean Up Australia Day 2018.

Since this national event started in 1990, Australians have donated more than 31.2 million hours by taking to their streets, bushland, parks and waterways on Clean Up Australia Day and removing an estimated 331.5 thousand ute loads of rubbish from 166 thousand sites across the country.

Thank you to the support of parents (who supplied so many students with their own gloves), students and staff, we were able to play our part in this important event. Amongst some of the strange items we discovered in our clean up were a fidget spinner, a number of balls and a hat. A big thank you again for all your support.

Mrs G Deering, Clean Up Australia Coordinator.

We picked up rubbish for disposal and also large twigs to add to

the gardens.

VALUE OF THE FORTNIGHT Respect

Please support us at home by having discussions with your child/children about what ‘Respect’ means at home, at school and in the community.

HEALTH MATTERS Live Life Well @ School is a joint initiative between the Department of Education and the Ministry of Health in NSW. The program promotes a whole school approach to physical activity and nutrition, aims to get more students more active more often and focuses on developing healthy eating habits.

Please note, we are not preaching to you rather we are providing information.

We crunched it! THE BIG VEGIE CRUNCH REVIEW On Thursday, 1 of March, Panania Students and staff members all participated in the “Big Vegie Crunch” along with 140 other schools in a record attempt at the most people simultaneously crunching vegetables. Students from K-6 and our healthy staff members, all enjoyed munching on their favourite vegetables including carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and even a few students braved a chilli or two. Students engaged in vegetable inspired activities from making acrostic poems, paper collages, and even writing their own version of the theme song. A big thank you to Lloyds IGA at Panania for donating a delicious range of vegetables for our event.

What can you do to keep your family crunching?

Hold a family Big Vegie Crunch at the dinner table

Keep serving up the vegetables at meals and snacks

Be a role model and let your kids see you enjoying eating vegetables

Ms S Defina, The Big Vegie Crunch School Coordinator.

Our Office Staff crunched too!

A DAY FOR FINN What a day! What a hero! Finn O’Donovan in Year 2 was treated to a special day yesterday, Tuesday, 6 March. Finn was made an honorary Police Officer for the day to help save Easter. He was needed to assist police in locating and arresting two “bad guys” who had stolen Easter eggs from the Easter Bunny. Finn was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) 2 years ago. DMD is a genetic disorder characterised by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. It is one of 9 types of Muscular Dystrophy. The onset commences in early childhood around 3-5 years of age and primarily in boys. DMD indiscriminately attacks muscles, breaking them down and usually seeing them wheelchair-bound by their early teen years. This inhibits Finn from doing many activities other children enjoy and he tires very easily. Five local mothers have established the ‘Fight for Finn Foundation’ to raise money for Finn’s ongoing care and to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The ‘Fight for Finn Foundation’ organised the special day for Finn that he and his family will never forget. Check out his adventure below. Firstly, Finn was made an honorary Police Office for the day at school. He then took a helicopter to Gladesville where he boarded a Police Boat to chase the “bad guys”. He then joined the Dog Squad to track them down. Finn chased them on his Police motor bike and cornered the “bad guys”, saving the day and the Easter eggs for the Easter Bunny. Finn then returned to school in a Highway Patrol car. What a day! What a hero!
