PRINCIPAL’S REPORT…. Welcome back to Semester 2 and a busy Term 3. I hope that you enjoyed some “down time” with your children in what was beautiful weather during the Winter Break. On Day 1 this term all staff participated in a School Development Day, held in our Library, where we focused on Writing and Science and Technology (S&T). It was a very productive day with good discussion on building a consistency in our judgements on student writing across the grades and also some common understanding on where to next with the updated S&T syllabus. More professional learning time will be devoted to these areas this term. My sincere thanks go to Ms Ambrose, Mrs Deering and Ms Adams who facilitated the day. A concentrated, yet lengthy amount of time devoted to professional learning is very beneficial. We welcomed students back on Tuesday of Week 1, held Parent/Teacher Interviews for most classes on Wednesday (with 1/2N, 4H and 5PS to have interviews this Wednesday), had a Stage 3 Science Incursion on Thursday and a group of students represented SSW in the NSW Cross Country on Friday (see High Flyers). A busy week indeed and it is lovely to be back! We are celebrating Education Week (“Today’s schools: Creating tomorrow’s world.”) next week; with our Open Day on Wednesday, 8 August. The Education Week Committee has planned: A Parent ‘Reading’ Workshop (from 10.15am until 11.00am) A Book Fair (11.10am) Open Classrooms (11.45am until 12.30pm) A Picnic Lunch (12.30pm until 1.15pm) Performances and a Book Character Parade (1.30pm until 3.10pm) Please note: There will be a variety of food available from the School Canteen but there will be no provision for lunch orders on the day. I look forward to seeing you at school next week. Could I encourage you to come to the Parent Workshop on Reading that Mrs Ambrose and Mrs Russell have planned for 10.15 on our Open Day (D Block Hall)? It will be very helpful and you will come away with additional strategies to support your child at home. You will also help us to celebrate achievements in NAPLAN and with our Bump It Up strategy. With my best wishes, Sandra Palmer OPEN DAY PARENT WORKSHOP All K-6 Parents and Carers are invited to attend a workshop led by Ms Ambrose and Mrs Russell on Reading. It will be held on Wednesday, 8 August in ‘D’ Block Hall from 10.15 am until 11.00am (prior to recess and the commencement of the Book Fair in the Library). We will be focusing on reading and offering strategies to assist parents/carers to support and enhance the reading experience with their children at home. As part of our Bump It Up initiative we will explain how individual student and whole school results in NAPLAN influence our teaching and learning programs and how this is reflected in our school plan. There will be an opportunity for questions on how you can best support your child. Ms T Ambrose & Mrs K Russell. Parent Workshop Coordinators. SURVEY- DEPARTMENT OF

PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENT

Panania PS is promoting the work that the Department of Planning and Environment is doing to ensure that the unique communities of Greater Sydney have access to outdoor spaces and facilities that meet their needs. The Greater Sydney Outdoors Survey is now open to find out how we use our parks, playgrounds, waterways and other outdoor public spaces. The results of the survey will inform future planning and make sure that our community has access to the great outdoors. Whether it's taking your dog for a walk each morning, studying under a tree in your local park or cycling to work, we want to know how you use outdoor spaces so we can better plan for Greater Sydney. You can help shape the future of our community by completing the short 5-minute survey here. (Control

HEALTH MATTERS This section of Chatterbox will be a regular feature, once again, over the coming weeks. We belong to Live Life Well @ School which is a joint initiative between the Department of Education and the Ministry of Health in NSW. The program promotes a whole school approach to physical activity and nutrition, aims to get more students more active more often and focuses on developing healthy eating habits. Please note, we are not preaching to you rather we are providing information.

RULE OF THE FORTNIGHT The rule we are focusing on for
