BOTTLE OF WHISKY MADE IRISHWOMAN AN OVERNIGHT MILLIONAIRE Last July, 52-year-old Ms Linda Tobin was enjoying a drink at the Raffles Long Bar at Changi Airport’s Wines & Spirits duplex store. The Irishwoman had just bought a bottle of Laghroaig 25 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, and a fellow passenger encouraged her to take part in the ‘Be a Changi Millionaire’ shopping promotion.

She did. Half a year later, she is crowned Changi’s sixth Millionaire!

The sixth run of the promotion saw an overwhelming response of 1.9 million entries from 229 nationalities over the six-month period from May to October 2015. Singaporeans, Chinese nationals and Indonesians made up the top three participating groups, with Singaporeans making up over a third of the participants. For the first time in the game’s history, an additional shopper was drawn from those who shopped on Changi’s online retail portal, iShopChangi.com, on top of the six monthly finalists. The seven finalists battled each other over four rounds of games based on luck in front of a live audience made up of hundreds. There were three Singaporeans, one Briton, one Irish, one Malaysian and one Indonesian. After four rounds of heart-stopping games, Ms Tobin triumphed over Briton, Ms Tracy Tomlinson and a burst of confetti declared her the winner.

When asked about how she felt with her win and what

CHANGI NEWS02/03

her plans for the S$1 million were, an ecstatic Ms Tobin gushed, “It still doesn’t seem real. I feel incredible; I feel on top of the world! I would spend the money helping out my family, and buy myself a house with a kitchen garden, which has always been my dream. I like growing things but I don’t have the room to do it. And I might treat myself to a nice car!”

Ms Tobin joins five other very lucky Changi shoppers who were made millionaires overnight. The past winners are former deejay Ivan Rantung (2010) and business development director, Peh Hock Peng (2012), both from Singapore; an Australian engineer from Perth, Jessica Down (2011); an Indonesian business man, Irvung Tio (2013); and Japanese engineer, Oiyama Seiichiro (2014).

A seventh run of the promotion will be held again this year. Stay tuned for details! – KWAN SHU QIN

CAG SECURES A GOLD AWARD FOR PASSENGER SCREENINGSecurity is an important issue that all international airports have to grapple with, and Changi Airport is no exception. This is why CAG has implemented the Threat Oriented Passenger Screening Integrated System (TOPSIS), a framework spearheaded by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to ensure security at checkpoints like the airport. TOPSIS involves both security and non-security staff in identifying tell-tale signs of travellers who might pose a security threat, such as unusual behaviour or irregularities in their documents. Suspicious-looking passengers are then asked to undergo additional checks.

For its efforts in co-creating TOPSIS solutions for Changi Airport, CAG was awarded the Gold standard by MHA in the TOPSIS Organisational Awards 2016. These solutions help keep Changi Airport a safe destination, while keeping security procedures for passengers pleasant, speedy, and efficient.

CAG’s Gold award comes after its award for Active

Participation in 2010, and four consecutive years of Silver awards from 2011 to 2015. It reflects the organisation’s dedication to ensuring security and peace of mind for all travellers, members of the public and staff that come to Changi Airport. As new technologies like electronic boarding passes become more popular, CAG will continue to review its security procedures to ensure that all potential threats are detected and eliminated. – CHRISTOPHER TEO

CHANGI RAISES CURTAIN FOR TERMINAL 4 AT SINGAPORE AIRSHOW 2016Visitors to Changi Airport’s booth at the recent Singapore Airshow 2016 (SA2016) were welcomed with a nice boutique feel of Changi Airport’s newest Terminal 4 (T4). The booth was decked out with some of T4’s interior design features such as the Greenwall, petal-shaped ceiling skylight, carpet design and intricately-designed Peranakan shophouse façade.

With T4 expected to open in second half of 2017, it was opportune for Changi Airport to offer a glimpse of the new terminal at SA2016 which took place from 16 to 21 February. In addition, visitors got a hands-on experience at the self-check in kiosk and self-bag drop station, showcased as part of the Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) concept to be widely implemented in T4. Genie Cheung, a visitor from Hong Kong, was impressed with the technology, “It is very fast and user-friendly. I am definitely using this when I travel through Changi!”

Changi’s first-ever augmented reality activity, ‘Let Your Colours Take Flight’, proved a hit among visitors across

all age groups, and even among visiting dignitaries. By simply colouring their own aeroplane on specially designed paper, the proud ‘airline owners’ grinned with excitement as their creations transform into 3D aircraft on-screen before taking off from the virtual runways and flying over Changi Airport. Photos of visitors and their virtual aeroplanes can be downloaded from Changi Airport’s website as mementoes. Ms Shirley Lim, a Singaporean student quipped in amazement, “I could not have imagined designing and flying my own aeroplane before this. This is truly a unique experience!”

In all, CAG staff played host to more than 26,000 visitors to the Changi Airport booth throughout the six-day exhibition, making it its highest visitorship ever and a roaring success for CAG. The biennial event, Asia’s largest aerospace and defence exhibition, is a key event for the aviation industry and is popular with members of the public. – JULIA JEMANGIN & BIANCA BOH

PUSHING PRODUCTIVITY WITH AUTOMATED TROLLEY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMHave you ever wondered how much effort goes into matching 12,000 trolleys to some 150,000 passengers daily at Changi Airport? This is no easy feat given that Changi’s three terminals cover over 1,000,000 square metres in floor area (about 140 football fields). To top it off, an aircraft lands or takes off every 90 seconds here at Changi.

To better match trolley demand by passengers with supply, CAG has pioneered an innovative solution that empowers trolley retrievers and leverages technology to automate trolley operations in the transit areas.

Before this, a fixed number of trolleys were parked at every trolley point throughout the day, regardless of anticipated demand. The trolley retrievers also had to manually check the trolley supply at each of the docking stations outside the gate holdrooms. Not only was it labour-intensive, the trolley retrievers also had to rush to replenish the trolleys when there were not enough.

With the Automated Trolley Management

System (ATMS), live flight data and video analytics were used to anticipate potential demand from incoming flights, while the system simultaneously cross checks the existing supply of trolleys outside every gate holdroom. Where more trolleys are needed, the system alerts the trolley retrievers to replenish those specific docking stations. In this way, sufficient trolleys are readily available for passengers at the right place and at the right time, while making work less labourious for the trolley retrievers.

Since the full implementation of the ATMS earlier this year, man-hour savings of up to 25% have been achieved and manpower resources can now be more effectively deployed in other areas of the airport. The smoother flow and supply of trolleys also means improvement to the overall experience for passengers arriving at Changi Airport. – SHERMAN PUN

EARLY CHECK-IN MADE EASY FOR PASSENGERS AT CHANGI AIRPORTSince the start of the year, common early check-in counters have been set up at Terminals 2 and 3 and an early check-in lounge at Terminal 1 to facilitate early check-in by departing passengers. The counters and the lounge serve as a common one-stop service point for passengers across participating airlines, which make up more than half of the airlines at Changi Airport.

With these new facilities, seven in 10 passengers departing from Singapore can now enjoy early check-in of 12 hours or more before their scheduled flight departures.

In addition to the benefits to passengers, encouraging early check-in helps to boost the airport’s operational efficiency and productivity through better use of check-in resources. Early check-in by passengers reduces the load to be processed during peak periods, resulting in a shorter queue and a better travel experience for passengers.

Mr Albert Lim, Vice President for Passenger Experience

at Changi Airport said, “Changi is one of the first airports in the world to offer a common early check-in service across airlines. We want to give passengers the flexibility to design their own travel experiences by making early check-in easier and more readily available.’’

The common early check-in initiative is jointly supported by CAG and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. – SHERMAN PUN

COVER STORY06/07

A RECORD HIGH FOR CHANGI IN 2015Changi Airport wrapped up 2015 with new records for passenger traffic and aircraft movements, handling a record 55.4 million passengers and 346,330 landings and take-offs during the year, an increase of 2.5% and 1.4% respectively. On the cargo front, airfreight movements remained stable at 1.85 million tonnes for the year.

IN DECEMBER 2015, CHANGI AIRPORT REGISTERED ALMOST 5.3 MILLION PASSENGER MOVEMENTS, THE HIGHEST EVER TRAFFIC THE AIRPORT HAS ACHIEVED IN A MONTH SINCE IT OPENED IN 1981. CHANGI AIRPORT’S DAILY RECORD WAS ALSO BROKEN ON THE SATURDAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS (19 DECEMBER 2015), WITH MORE THAN 192,000 PASSENGERS PASSING THROUGH DURING THE 24 HOURS.

STRENGTHENING GROWTH IN KEY MARKETSTraffic was positive for most of Changi Airport’s top 10 country markets with Thailand, Vietnam and China registering the strongest growth. This was offset by a softer showing for Indonesia and Hong Kong. While the broader trend for air travel was positive, traffic to Singapore was impacted by the strength of the Singapore dollar against some regional currencies.

In terms of Changi Airport’s busiest routes, Jakarta continued to top the list with close to 3.8 million passenger movements last year, followed by Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Manila. Bangkok was Changi’s second fastest growing route among destinations with at least half a million passengers

handled in 2015. Colombo, Guangzhou, Mumbai and Tokyo rounded up the top five.

CULTIVATING NEW AIRLINES AND DESTINATIONSDuring the year, eight new carriers started operations at Changi Airport. The return of Air New Zealand boosted capacity on the Singapore-Auckland route while the addition of Batik Air, Thai Lion Air and Myanmar National Airlines strengthened Changi’s connectivity within Southeast Asia. Oman Air also launched flight operations to Singapore, with a daily service to its capital city of Muscat, a new city link for Changi. Three other airlines (My Indo Airlines, Polar Air Cargo and AirBridgeCargo) enhanced Changi’s cargo network.

Changi Airport added 10 new destinations in 2015, highlighted by four new Chinese city links (Changchun, Quanzhou, Sanya and Yinchuan), strengthening the airport’s position as the most connected airport in

Southeast Asia to China, with a total of 32 city links to the country. Besides the Chinese cities and Muscat, Changi also saw new services to Cairns in Australia, Lucknow in India, Luang Prabang in Laos, Pattaya (U-Tapao) in Thailand and Cincinnati in the United States, a new freighter link.

INVESTING IN NEW CARGO INFRASTRUCTUREWhile Changi Airport’s total cargo throughput was little changed at 1.85 million tonnes for the year, there were pockets of growth in niche cargo segments. For instance, there was strong double-digit growth in the pharmaceuticals cargo segment, which registered a 44% growth on-year in 2015.

Supporting the growth of the express cargo segment, Changi Airport Group and DHL Express announced plans in March 2015 to build a 24-hour express facility at the Changi Airfreight Centre to support the growth of trade within the region. To be completed later in 2016, the new facility will increase DHL’s throughput by three times and processing speed by six times, and further anchor Changi Airport’s position as a key cargo and logistics hub in Asia.

SHAPING THE BEST POSSIBLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCEChangi Airport received its 500th Best Airport award

in November 2015. This milestone rounded off another year of excellence during which Changi clinched a total of 28 ‘Best Airport’ awards. One of the awards was the prestigious World’s Best Airport award by Skytrax, which Changi Airport bagged again in 2016, making it its 4th in as many years, and its 7th win in all.

Looking ahead, Changi Airport Group CEO Mr Lee Seow Hiang, said, “Asia continues to present exciting growth opportunities, with untapped tourism potential in many parts of the continent, and growing affluence in the emerging economies driving air travel. Changi Airport is well placed to capture future growth with our expanding network, including many secondary cities, to key markets like China, India and Indonesia. We will continue to work closely with our airline partners to establish new connections to develop the Singapore air hub and better serve our passengers.” – EUGENE WONG

CHANGI PROFILE08

FOODIES UNITE! With over 140 F&B establishments across its three terminals, Changi Airport is a dining destination in its own right. Food options have been tastefully curated to ensure a wide selection to suit all palettes, having a good meal at Changi has never been easier – that is, if you even manage to narrow down your choices.

Changi Connection speaks to the CAG Airside Planning & Leasing team that diligently scouts the F&B landscape to source for new brands, for more insights into Changi’s extensive dining mix.

HOW HAS CHANGI’S DINING LANDSCAPE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?Whilst variety of trade and price points remain as key elements of our F&B mix at Changi, we increasingly see operators 'creating experiences' for our passengers. The introduction of self-service ordering systems at Terminal 2's (T2) Straits Food Village is one example. Some brands, Starbucks for instance, are also riding on the popularity of social media to engage their customers, gather feedback, as well as promote new offerings. This is an important step because just as operators are raising the bar, customers’ expectations, in terms of the level of service they hope to receive and the range of options, from gluten-free to kosher foods, have also increased.

WHAT DOES YOUR TEAM LOOK OUT FOR WHEN CURATING CHANGI’S DINING OFFERINGS AND EXPERIENCE?Strong brand names, operators and interesting

concepts and cuisines we assess could match the passenger profile of each terminal.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THE TEAM FACES?Labour crunch, and a generally cautious market outlook, as F&B players these days have become more conservative in their expansion plans. Some operators may be unwilling to venture into the airport’s transit areas due to the more stringent requirements and longer operating hours as compared to downtown shopping malls.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE DINING TRENDS FOR 2016? One key trend is that brands are paying greater attention to lifestyle designs for their F&B spaces, with an emphasis on fresh food display. In line with this, our F&B plans at Changi will entail a greater focus on the use of unique concepts, designs and themes to create a novel and engaging experience for our passengers.

OUR TOP THREE MUST-TRIES AT CHANGI ARE…• Straits Food Village (T2) – It’s Changi’s first

thematic integrated food atrium fitted with self-service order and payment kiosks. Whilst enjoying the wide variety of food offerings, you can soak in the ambience of a fishing village in the olden days!

• Pezzo (T2) – A carnival of fun and flavours! Pezzo offers value-for-money and on-the-go tasty pizzas which are Halal-certified.

• Ippudo Express (T3) – Apart from the famous ramen offerings, you will be able to enjoy the latest addition to its menu – don sets! - ANG KAI FONG

IT’S AWESOME TO HAVE 1 MILLION FACEBOOK FANS The airport’s biggest and most popular social media channel is now ONE MILLION strong! On 14 January 2016, Changi Airport’s Facebook page welcomed its 1 millionth fan, a proud milestone in its 7-year journey.

Started in August 2009, Changi Airport’s Facebook page was the first channel launched in the airport’s social media foray, ending the calendar year with a humble 6,000 fans.

Over time, the page has become a place where fans of Changi Airport connect virtually to enjoy the Changi Experience. Conversely, the channel is where Changi Airport actively communicates developments within the airport and builds relationships with its fans, indirectly building the Changi brand name.

Not looking back, Changi Airport’s Facebook page has since grown from strength to strength, doubling its fan base every

year. In June 2014, the page gained its “officially verified” badge of honour bestowed by Facebook, making it one of the very few verified airport pages around the world.

Engaging fans through a myriad of exciting content, the channel frequently posts various types of rich media, ranging from vibrant visuals, to interesting videos and fun contests. Not surprisingly, the efforts to engage our fans daily have been well-received.

Today, Changi Airport has built a truly international fan base, uniting Facebook fans who love Changi from around the world. The Facebook channel looks set to continue growing and together with the rest of the other social media channels, Changi Airport’s Facebook page will continue to be one of the many valuable assets in Changi’s communications and brand building efforts. – JIANG KEJIA

SIX FAMOUS LANDMARKS FROM NANOBLOCKS' 'SIGHTS TO SEE' SERIES WERE HANDPICKED FOR THIS LATEST PROMOTION – JAPAN'S KAMINARIMON, FRANCE'S EIFFEL TOWER, ENGLAND'S TOWER BRIDGE, EGYPT'S PYRAMID OF GIZA, INDIA'S TAJ MAHAL AND ITALY'S LEANING TOWER OF PISA.

Made up of many tiny and colourful bricks about 1/8 the size of a standard Lego brick, it gives nanoblock builders the ability to create more intricate and detailed designs.

The six nanoblock landmarks make excellent keepsakes to remind you of your travels or inspire you to include these places of interests on your bucket list.

For those who are not familiar with nanoblocks, here are some fun facts:

1. It has only been around for a few years since being introduced in 2008 by Japanese toy company Kawada.

2. The smallest brick measures 4mm x 4mm x 5mm – even smaller than a Singapore 10-cent coin.

3. There are hundreds of nanoblock designs, ranging from birds and animals, to cartoon characters and famous landmarks.

4. Communities of collectors and builders with a common love for nanoblocks have been coming together over the years – there are quite a few Facebook pages and websites created by Singapore’s own nanoblock lovers.

5. The world’s largest nanoblock creation is a 250,000-piece design of the city of Rio de Janeiro created just over a year ago by a group of enthusiasts.

James Fong, Assistant Vice President for Landside Concessions at CAG said, "The 'Sights to See' nanoblock series feature world landmarks. It was picked because of its travel and connectivity themes, both of which are closely linked to what we do at Changi Airport. The response to the promotion has been very encouraging. We are delighted that the nanoblocks have brought joy to the visitors and fans of Changi, and will continue to seek out other popular premiums for our future promotions.”

The promotion ends on 27 March 2016, so hurry before the stocks run out! Each nanoblock set can be purchased for S$3 (usual price from S$25) at Terminal 3 Basement 2 with a minimum spend of S$60 (S$80 at supermarkets) in the airport’s public areas.
