Changi Airport, with six companies in Singapore, is the first airport in Asia to host a community to undergo the certification for the IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators for Pharmaceutical Handling (CEIV Pharma).

Under the community approach, companies from different parts of the air cargo supply chain will undergo the certification programme. With the certification, Changi Airport will be the first CEIV Community in Asia – and third in the world – with an entire air cargo supply chain operating at the highest standards for the transportation of pharmaceutical cargo. The six companies involved in the certification are illustrated below. This is in addition to SATS Coolport being the first facility in the world to attain the IATA CEIV Pharma certification.

What is IATA CEIV Pharma

It is an extensive certification that complies, or even supersedes, many of the existing pharmaceutical standards and guidelines such as the European Union’s Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP), World Health Organization Annex 5 (GDP for pharmaceutical products). With a CEIV community in Changi Airport, facilities, equipment, operations, and staff along the entire air cargo supply chain would comply with all applicable standards, regulations, and guidelines expected from pharmaceutical manufacturers.

With Asia poised to account for the largest regional share of more than $1 billion of cold-chain growth through 2018 , the CEIV community in Changi Airport would help strengthen Singapore’s position as the preferred location for the handling and storage of pharmaceutical cargo.

Freshness uncompromised by time

dnata Coolchain is designed to handle high-value, high-yield perishable items for airline customers within a specialised, state-of-the-art perishable cargo handling facility.

Coolchain is operational 24 hours a day, all year round. The 1,400m2 perishable handling facility has an annual handling capacity of 75,000 tonnes.

Perishable cargo from Coolchain has a priority release within 2 hours of aircraft landing. Coolchain uses a web-based monitoring system to facilitate real-time management so customers will always know where their perishable products are in the supply chain.

The Coolchain team is trained to handle highly sensitive perishable products, such as pharmaceuticals, seafood, meats, fruits and vegetables, flora and fauna, dairy products, confectionery, and wines and spirits. Different products require their own special handling, which is why Coolchain has dedicated cold rooms for each product.

Each room has its own monitoring system to track temperature variances to ensure that your shipment is kept at its optimal temperature.

Coolchain is now Halal-certified by The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), providing customers the assurance of right handling processes. There is a dedicated holding room in Coolchain for all Halal products.

dnata is gearing up for GDP certification and CEIV certification by the end of the year.

The dedicated Coolchain handling team assures the highest quality perishable product handling and ensures that nothing is compromised.

The Asia Pacific air express market is expected to grow at a fast pace as the rising trade flows and booming cross-border e-commerce activities in the region increase the need for time-sensitive express services. In addition, growth is driven by Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) seeking to expand their businesses overseas. In Asia Pacific, they account for 98% of businesses, and more than a third of them export to other countries. Evolving free trade agreements between Singapore and other nations, such as the recently concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), are also catalysts that can boost trade flows and e-commerce volumes.

Changi Airport is home to 4 major express players – DHL Express, FedEx Express, TNT Express, and UPS. Features of their on-airport hubs in the free trade zone (FTZ) include:

• Direct access to the airside and freighter parking stands for quick sorting and turnaround of goods

• Tax-free transshipments within the FTZ

• Operate own or partner freighter airlines, as well as leverage on the excellent connectivity provided by other commercial airlines operating in Singapore, to extend their reach
