I have a few events to talk about this month. First, of course, is Sweethearts and Orphans – the 15th annual – in Granbury beginning Feb 21 through Feb 23. Granbury is where the event started back in the day. Coinciding with the car show the same week- end is the Decatur Swap Meet, so you can have two events in one weekend. Also coming up in February is the 2014 Dallas Autorama at Dallas Market Hall, Feb 14 through 16th. Then the DFW Auto Show which is held at the Dallas Convention Center which begins Wednesday, Feb 19, and runs through Sunday, Feb 23. Tickets are a whopping $12; however, if you are 65 or older, the price is only $5. More details on page 5. The North Texas Mustang Club has again invited the North Texas Oldsmobile Club to participate with them this year in one (or more) of their monthly Cracker Barrel Cruise Nights. The cruises begin in April and run through November (no Cruise Night in August) and, except for April, are on the second Saturday of the month. The April show is on the first Saturday, but I figure April will be a busy month for us with Zone Show preparations and then the show. I’ll have some NTMC Cruise Night flyers with me at the meeting and we can discuss it. Looking forward to seeing you at the February meeting at our usual haunt, Sonny Bryan’s Barbecue in Richardson, on Feb 9th. JanuaryMonthlyMeetingThe January 2014 NTOC monthly meeting was held on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Sonny Bryans Bar-B-Q on Campbell Rd. in Richardson. President Fred Burkle opened the meeting at 2:00 and welcomed everyone. Fred introduced James Simmons and Carol Mattix of the Lincoln Owners Club and said they would make a presentation later. Also in attendance was Bruce De-ment, long time member of NTOC who came for the first time in several years. Good to see you Bruce. Attending the meeting were 34 members and 2 visitors.

Treasurer’sReport

Cindy gave the treasurer’s report and we are financially sound. Cindy reported that all of the club approved contributions from the Helping Hands Fund had been made and we had received acknowledgement from the organizations and individuals who had been selected. The Helping Hands Fund for 2014 begins with $957.76 and several items have been donated for sale and raffle to build the Helping Hands fund for this year.

Among the members who have contributed items for sale and auction are Bob Brannan, (Oldsmobile Advertising Literature), Brad Bishop, (various Oldsmobile parts and other items), Stewart and Gayla Stephenson, (1983 Cutlass). Mike Horner, who does the Lancaster Airport car Show has donated several new GM parts from his shop to NTOC to be sold to contribute to our helping Hands Fund. Thanks Mike. You are always welcome to join us at our events. The North Texas Olds Club is fortunate to have members and others who make a special effort to help the North Texas Olds Club Helping Hands Program give back to the community.

2014ChristmasPartySet

It is official, members at the January meeting voted to hold our annual Christmas Party at the Marriott D/FW again in 2014. The date is the second Sunday of December. Begin now to be look-ing for that special gift exchange item.

GenerousOfferbyStewartandGaylaAfter some discussion a committee was formed to make recom-mendations about the best way for the club to use the 1983 Olds that was donated by Stewart and Gayla. The proceeds from the sale/raffle will go to the Helping Hands Fund. Stewart believes the three things that the car needs are, a new windshield, a bat-tery and a tune-up. This is a basic Cutlass with a V-6 motor, A/C, P/B, AM Radio.

Less than 34K actual miles. The car has no body damage or rust. If you have any interest in the car or have a suggestion about a good method of selling it, contact one of the committee mem-bers.

Members of the committee are Lance Hall, John Bock, Chris Dreiling, Aron Nance, John Liconte and Stewart Stephenson.

NovemberFredericksburgGet-togetherfor2014SetforOct.31-Nov.1Weekend

Denise Camba reported that the votes are in and the weekend of Oct 31-Nov 1 was the preferred weekend for most of those who

replied. Room rates will be $119/ night at the Fredericksburg Inn. This is the weekend of the F-1 Race in Austin so race enthusiasts can plan now to enjoy both events.

Denise has already been planning activities that include the lunch/cruise at the Full Moon B&B and the Saturday evening dinner and charity raffle.

Friday evening plans are in the works as many NTOC members expressed their wishes to go to the Rockbox theater again. As usual you will be on your own, individually or as a group, for Friday night meal.

Also if you have any recommendations for new or repeat activi-ties for our Fredericksburg weekend we need them now so the planning can begin.

Denise mentioned that the event committee was encouraging all of the participants to begin looking for clothes that are represen-tative of the dress code for the time period of the car you will be driving. To refresh your memory look for pictures on the internet that are from that time. What were they wearing in 192&??

Keith and Elizabeth Sauls (Bonnie & Clyde) started this last year and it really was fun for us to see them dressed in the 1935 styles. So start looking now for those 40’s, 50’s, 60’s 70’s and ‘80s out-fits you wore then.

Mike Payton mentioned that the rest stop area where we have gathered to caravan from just south of Waxahachie is now closed. As we get closer to the event we will need to develop a plan for the trip, maybe a new route that will provide different scenery and an alternate place to stop for lunch. (It will be hard to beat the Bluebonnet Café)

Sweethearts&OrphansEventFebruary21–23

Look for information about the 2014 Sweethearts and Orphans Show in this Rocket. This event will be in Granbury, TX February 21 thru 23 at the Best Western Hotel, 1517 North Plaza Drive. Reservations to the Hotel can be made by calling 817-573-4239 and ask for the S&O rate. The hospitality room opens Thursday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 and again on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. There will be scheduled activities on Friday in-cluding registration and a luncheon. The Decatur Swap (60 miles north on Farm to Market 51) meet is also on that Friday so if you are inclined to look for some car parts take a trip to Decatur, TX. Saturday will be the Car Display around the Hood County Courthouse with people’s choice Voting. And a Sweethearts date Night from 7:00 to 10:00 pm with cars lining up at 6:45 leaving at 7:00 for Granbury Opera House. Sunday the awards and wrap-up meeting from 9:00 to 10:15 AM. Then everyone is out of there!! If you haven’t attended one of the Sweethearts and Orphans events then 2014 is a good year for you to start. You will remember the Hudsons, Studebakers, Packards, and other “orphans” from your youth. (Mine anyway)

OCA Insurance coverage has been requested and approved for our event. Our event will be listed in the OCA Chapter Events section and we will have a ½ page ad to invite others to attend the event.

Time to register for the Zone Show is NOW. We need to get registrations in as early as possible. The Registration Form is in this Rocket and on our NTOC website under Zone Show 2014.

The Saturday Cruise will be after the raffle and we understand that we will be given a police Escort out of the city to ensure that we are able to stay together; at the beginning anyway.

The Hilton Garden Inn host hotel block is filled and we now have options at two or three other hotels that are pretty close to the Hilton Gardens. They are listed below. Be sure to mention that you are part of the North Texas Olds Club event.

OCABusinessDiscussion

As we discussed in the December meeting it is now time for nominations for national and Zone OCA Officers. The term for elected officers is four years. The president, vice-president, sec-retary and treasurer are elected by all voting members of OCA while the Zone Directors are elected by voting members in the Zone they represent. There appeared to be no interest in nomi-nating anyone for one of the positions and no interest in anyone running for one of the positions. If anyone who was not at the meeting would like more information please contact one of your Zone Directors or another member of the Board.

LincolnOwner’sClubPresentationCarol Mattix and James Simmons of the Lincoln Owners Club addressed the meeting to invite the North Texas Olds Club to join in activities that are planned during 2014. The Lincoln Owners are holding a special event April 18 -20 in Salado at the Stagecoach Inn. The Lincoln car Show will be on Saturday April 19 and they invited the NTOC members to come down and spend the weekend to enjoy the display of Lincolns. Also, during October 24 & 25 the Lincoln Club will be in the Fredericksburg area, specifically at the Lyndon Johnson Ranch where they will be featured with their cars being given special parking in honor of the fact that LBJ drove Lincolns while he was President.

Anyone who would like more information can contact carol at [email protected] or 972 412-0754.

MemberInformation:

Dave Huggins is home from the rehab center but is still working on rebuilding his strength. Please remember Dave and Donna in your prayers. Dave has a lot of work to do to get back to his old self.

Jean says that Frank has some good and some bad days. They are going to try to make the February meeting if they are in town. They have to make a trip to Indiana to take care of some family

obligations. Please keep Frank and Jean Turner in your prayers as Frank continues to recover from back surgery and as they travel to take care of his mother.

ClubSpiritItems

We did not discuss the NTOC spirit items or take a survey about NTOC spirit items. Please email me at [email protected] with a list of denim shirts, golf shirts, t-shirts, hats, or any other NTOC logo item you are interested in buying.

Price will depend on the number of items ordered. I will need this information as soon as possible so email or have your list for me at the next meeting, February 9. A concern that has been expressed is that the cost for limited quantities is high and we need to purchase only what members want. Hopefully we can get things decided in February and we will have items back in time for the 2014 Zone Show.

TECHTALK(Repeat)

Bob Brannan, long time Oldsmobile employee and a member of NTOC has decided to downsize some of his Oldsmobile documentation. Bob donated several documents, brochures, Promotional packets, and other items to NTOC to be sold with the funds to be put in the Helping hands fund. Chris Dreiling has the material (if any of it is left), so con-tact Chris if you are interested in 62, 64, 65, 69, or 72 materials. Also there are some 80’s items available. Look on the ads page for other items that Bob has for sale.

ThermostatDiscussion

A question came up about the best thermostat to use in an Oldsmobile engine. There were several opinions about why, but most agreed that for best cooling performance a 190 degree thermostat was recommended. There is a need to keep the flow through the radiator so that the coolant stays in the radiator long enough to get the benefit of the cooling fan. My experience is trial and error using a 190 degree thermostat and checking all things including radiator size, making sure the fan shroud is still installed, making sure that correct timing is set, and in my case to correct the “over–RPM’ at high speeds I changed the rear end. Now my ’68 never runs hot and I improved gas mileage.

BruceDementisgettinghis’55ReadytoSellBruce Dement is offering his 1955 Super 88 Holiday Coupe to NTOC members before he advertises it nationally. Bruce tells the story that when he bought the car he was “interviewed” by the previous owner to be sure that he was worthy to own it. The car has been in storage for some time and Bruce is now getting it back to a condition that it was when he regularly took first place in car shows. Basically it has less than 2000 miles on a restora-tion, P/S, P/B, A/C, and it is Red/White. Hey Bruce, even if you sell the car you can still come to our events.

FebruaryMeeting

The February 9th NTOC Meeting will be at Sonny Bryan’s Bar-B-Q on Campbell Road, in Richardson. 1:00 to eat and socialize, 2:00 meeting starts. Fred does a good job starting on time if he can find something to “bang” on.

Safe driving wherever you go.
