Inside this Issue

by Joe Munoz

Presidents Trumpet November 2017Wow – 90 degrees in November! Able to use the convertible for a few more days this year.

As always our State Fair display was most impressive. Maybe sometimes we take it for granted, but this display, along with the Cracker Barrel show highlight the high levels of quality and participation that the NTOC is known for. For an orphan brand we do pretty well!

Please keep handing out those business cards to anyone you run into that has an Olds or even a passing interest in Oldsmobiles – you never know how things might work out in the future. (My blue car came to me from a chance encounter with someone 20 years before he called to take me up on my offer to buy it!) Also, old club members like Matt Garrett, David Farmer are slowly returning to the fold after years being away “taking care of business” – let’s show them that NTOC hospitality we’re known for.

Good progress is being made on the 2018 Zone Show (thanks Kendall and Vince) – stay tuned for this and start getting out the word now. This seems like the perfect event to break the 50 car barrier with. Time to start advertising in JWO, the OCA facebook page, Classic Oldsmobile, Hot Rod Happenings, etc….

Sheri and I will be (finally) attending the Bastrop Veteran’s day show – Szelag is going to fall over dead that we actually made it. We’ve heard so much about it over the years and we’re really looking forward to it.

Stay safe on I-35 on your way there!

Joe Munoz

October 2017 Monthly Meeting

The October 2017 NTOC monthly meeting was held October 14 in the Car Corral at the State Fair of Texas. President Joe Munoz called the meeting to order at 10:00 and welcomed everyone to the October meeting. He then led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. There were 38 members and guests present. Joe promised to keep the meeting brief.

Joe asked for an update on Mary Lou’s health and asked everyone to keep her in their thoughts. Gene reported that Mary Lou began her treatments the day before our State Fair display day and this was the first time she had missed the State Fair display in several years.

Joe said that he would like for all of the current NTOC business cards to be passed out by January of 2018 and that we would have new cards with the new dues listed on them by January 2018 meeting.

Joe said that he had not started contacting previous members and would wait until he had an updated roster to start. Cindy said that she was having computer problems and could not provide the new roster without some help. Gene offered to update the roster if Cindy could provide the information. (Cindy sent the information to Gene the next week and the roster has been updated and distributed to the NTOC officers for review.) Earlier Bill Furnell provided several NTOC rosters (1990, 2000, and 2005) to be used by Joe and Gary Thompson to contact previous NTOC members to encour-age them to rejoin NTOC or to just find out their status as Oldsmobile owners.

2018 NTOC Zone Show — Dates May 4, 5, 6, 2018

Joe asked for an update on the 2018 NTOC Zone Show activities. Kendall reported that he has developed a “cruise route” in the North Texas Area and wanted someone to join him in driving it to be sure it works. Kendall said he is working with the catering staff at Tanglewood to decide on a menu for the awards dinner on Saturday evening.

The room rates are $139.00 per night plus 6.0% tax and 12% Resort Fee. This rate includes two breakfasts for each room night. Driving time is estimated to be 10 – 15 minutes from the resort to “other dining options” and the resort has various venues for eating.

Some discussion about the “Extreme Sandbox” was held. It was recommended that anyone who wanted to go there during the Zone Show weekend contact them and make reservations. Some members who had contacted the Extreme Sandbox said they are big on upselling from the basic package. Check them out on the internet.

Harat will be looking for NTOC members to participate in the organization, promo-tion, and support of the 2019 event, so if you are interested in participating be sure to let her know.

NTOC State Fair of Texas Display Day – Saturday October 14

The NTOC State Fair Display Day –NTOC was represented by 21 Oldsmobiles ranging from Mike & Cindy’s 1949 Fastback to Juju Nance’s 1994 Cutlass Convertible. There was a steady stream of admirers walking by and asking about the cars on display. As always we heard many comments about the Oldsmobiles the visitors had owned or their family had owned when they were younger. Always nice to hear that displaying your car is appreciated. If you haven’t attended the State Fair Car Corral display with your car, put that on your calendar for next year!! Guaranteed good time.

In September Joe mentioned that he would prepare an article for both national club magazines based on the attendance and activities at the State Fair Car Corral Display on October 14. Glenn Hargrove volunteered to take pictures for the article.

Fisher House schedule

Helena Isbell and Harat Manges are working on a schedule for NTOC members to go to Fisher House to provide a meal for the families of veterans who are in the Veteran’s Hospital. Plans now are this to be in January 2018.

Cindy asked that we all save toiletry items that can be used to leave at Fisher House for families who arrive without the basic items, toothpaste, tooth brushes, shaving supplies, lotions, shampoo, etc. If you have any of these items please give them to Cindy and she will make up the gift bags.

Treasurer’s Report

NTOC is financially sound and Helping Hands fund is $1084.00. Last month the mem-bers voted to send $1000.00 to the American Legion Post where Pat Yancey is a member to help with the Hurricane Harvey relief effort. This reduced the fund from $2084 to $1084. A personal response from Pat & Margaret Yancey.

“I also notified Cindy that the Post 658 of the American Legion received the

NTOC check and letter today, An official letter of appreciation is being draft-

ed. Pat and I personally want to thank you and NTOC for the donation. We

handed out 8099 hot meals, Housed hundreds, and I cannot tell you of all the

pets saved and cared for during those weeks. We also sent many trucks to

Rockport, etc. Thanks again for all the love and caring from our NTOC family.

Love to all, Pat and Margaret”

Gene Crowdis made a motion to donate $500.00 to the Arlington Women’s Shelter, seconded by Stewart; Motion passed.

Member Information

Mary Lou Fairchild has been diagnosed with cancer. She began chemotherapy on October 13. Please keep Mary Lou in your prayers as she begins this medical process.

For the members of NTOC who know Hannah Pope Myran in Australia- Hannah has been hospitalized for a few weeks due to some serious health issues, but is now re-ported to be well on the road to recovery. Our best wishes and prayers go out to Hannah and the Pope family during this stressful time.

I am sorry to report that my brother, Don, has some health issues and will be giving up the “Mayflower”. Don has turned his motorcycle to his youngest son, Bobby, who we hope will continue to use it to support our Armed Forces as Don has done for many years. Thanks, Don for all of the enjoyable times we had when you joined us at NTOC events.

Note from the Secretary: If you are aware of any health or family issues related to NTOC members please send an email to [email protected] so we can include the information in our monthly report.

So far she has not received a reply from the Sam Pack Car Museum. Harat said she is also open to other suggestions for activities during the event.

Check them out on the internet.

by Joe Munoz

Joe Munoz
