Presidents Trumpet December 2016

In 1968 Oldsmobile, or shall I say Youngmobile like their brochures, found a clever way of skirt-ing GM’s 400 cu. in. limit in the intermediate car lines (A-body) by collaborating with George Hurst to custom build a limited quantity of Hurst-Oldsmobiles. These cars featured a 390 HP, 455 cubic inch Rocket engine backed by a special Turbo Hydramatic, installed by Demmer En-gineering in Lansing. In case you happen to own one of these cars, the Hurst dual gate shifter is still covered by an unlimited lifetime warranty!

Hurst-Campbell Company, led by George Hurst, was financed by Lawrence Greenwald who is credited as one of the inventors of stretch nylon hosiery! Hurst also developed the ‘Jaws of Life’; however, the company gave away the patent without compensation. The association with Oldsmobile lasted through 1984. Today the company is owned by B&M racing products and is still creating special interest vehicles and manufactures some of the finest manual transmission shifters available.

Here are some other interesting trivia facts about 1968. You probably used one to access this article, your computer mouse which was first demonstrated in 1968 along with ‘window’ type displays. Your computer may also use a processor manufactured by Intel, also founded on 1968. If you were an engineer, you might want a new calculator…right? Well HP started offering the HP 9100 desktop calculator for a retail price of $5000 (equivalent of $34,750 in today’s dollars)! This is $500 more than the base price of the most expensive Ninety-Eight Luxury Sedan.

20 families attended the Bastrop Area Cruisers Veteran’s Day Car Show. We had beautiful weath-er and a fun time eating and shopping in the downtown area. NTOC won the Club Participation Award with 18 entries. Special thanks to Bill & Mary Szelag for co-organizing the car show and auction; Harry & Cheryl Green for opening up their home to us on Saturday night; and Richard & Debbie Hirsch and John & Karen Koenreich for helping with food and hosting duties.

“Youngmobile thinking: it’s kept the oldest name in the business the youngest name in the business!”

November 2016 Monthly Meeting

The November 2016 NTOC monthly meeting was held on Nov. 20th, 2016 at the Spring Creek Bar-B-Q in Grapevine, TX. The meeting was called to order by President Javier Camba at 1:30. Javier welcomed everyone and thanked them coming early so we could end the meeting by 2:30. Javier said the group that was coming at 3:00 had cancelled so we did not have to leave at 2:30 as previously planned. There were 26 members present, including Tom Bilse, who has been a member since 1989. Tom and Carol don’t attend very often as they are very involved with the Rough Riders Baseball program.

Treasurers Report

Javier called on Cindy Payton to provide the Treasurer’s Report. Cindy reported that the NTOC General Fund is financially sound. She also reported that our Helping Hands Fund is at $3605 before we make our annual donations to local charitable organizations.

Cindy reported that NTOC has paid the second $500.00 payment to reserve the D/FW Marriott for our Christmas Party on December 11th.

NTOC Annual Charity Donations

Cindy said that she would be making our annual donations in the next few weeks. Gayla and Stewart reported they have contacted the Safe House in Arlington for a family to pro-vide gifts for Christmas. This year the family is a lady and three young boys, ages 4, 11, and 13. The Safe House makes some recommendations about the family needs and then Gayla and Stewart go shopping. Gayla said each year she makes sure the lady receives a “red purse”.

Over the past few years contributions of $500.00 each have been made to charities select-ed by club members. Javier said that the NTOC was awarded $100.00 by the host chapter at the Bastrop Car Show for having the most entries of any club at the show. Javier made a motion that the $100.00 award be divided into four amounts of $25.00 and each of the organizations receive an additional $25.00 The motion was seconded and voted on so this year the Fisher House, the Network Food Ministries, The Hospitality House in Mt. Pleasant, TX, and the Safe House in Arlington, TX, will each receive $525.00.

No discussion was held related to the Helping Hands Fund.

2017 Autorama Discussion

Date for the 2017 Autorama is Friday February 17th through Sunday February 19th at Dal-las Market Center, 2200 North Stemmons Fwy. (Interstate 35 East). Discussion during the meeting was that the cars to be on display have been identified. If you would like to have your car as an alternate contact John Bock.

2017 Zone Show

The only discussion related to the 2017 NTOC Zone Show was from John LaMonica who requested that someone other than John Bock or him take over the effort to contact auto-motive products suppliers for donations to our Zone Show Raffle. He believes that we need some new people involved in this part of the event. If you are willing to take over all of the contact information they have developed and make some contacts asking for donations to our raffle please contact John Bock, John LaMonica, or one of the club officers. John said we need to start early making contact with the automotive parts suppliers.

From September Meeting:

Javier opened the floor to discussion about the 2017 NTOC Zone Show. Chris Dreiling reported that he has reserved the pavilion at Frank Buck Park for the weekend of April 21 – 23. Chris also reported that he is working with the Quality Inn Hotel just across I-35 for a block of rooms. The hotel is currently undergoing renovations to include some updated handicapped rooms. The room rate will be $79.00 per night plus appropriate taxes. The rate includes breakfast as provided by the Quality inn.

The hotel has a banquet/conference room where a catered dinner will be held on Saturday evening along with the awards presentation.

Arrangements for the Hospitality Room, the Registration Room, and Raffle areas still need to be worked out. As things stand now Registration will be pre-registration through April 10th, 2017 and additional registration on Saturday morning, the day of the show/judging. Registration on the day of the show will be held at the pavilion in the show parking area.

Questions about car security were discussed and Mike Payton said he would take care of the security again as he has for several years. Trailer parking is available at no charge.

Fall Trip to Bastrop

Javier reported on the Bastrop Veteran’s Day car show held by the Bastrop Area Cruisers. As previously reported NTOC was awarded $100.00 for having the most club entries in the show. There were 18 cars and 20 families represented from NTOC. Glenn Hargrove

He recommended that in the future any road trips involving caravans should be on the less traveled highways. Others agreed with Bob about the difficulty of driving in a caravan on the interstate highways.

Javier presented a list of upcoming car related events in the next several months.

NAOC Nationals in Frisco. During the discussion there was mention that finding a location with hotel, parking lot, and banquet room at an acceptable price in Frisco might be difficult. Other recommendations were to consider Fort Worth which might be better for traffic and available parking space at a hotel. Members at the meeting asked about how much work was required for the NAOC Nationals compared to the annual NTOC Zone Show. More discussion needs to be held before committing to this program.

Members who indicated they would work on the organizing committees are Troy and Harat, Mike and Cindy, Marylou and Kendall. We will need more help as the program develops.

NTOC will need to make a presentation to Rick Winn and/or the NAOC Board at the 2017 event in Reading.

James Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma. After working at several jobs he disliked, Garner joined the United States Merchant Marine at age 16 near the end of World War II. After the war, Garner joined his father in Los Angeles and enrolled at Hollywood High School, where he was voted the most popular student. He played football and basketball and competed on the track and golf teams. However, he dropped out in his senior year. Garner went on to be an owner of the “American International Racers” auto racing team from 1967 through 1969. Motorsports writer William Edgar and Hollywood director Andy Sidaris teamed with Garner for the racing documentary The Racing Scene, filmed in 1969 and released in 1970. The team fielded cars at Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring endurance races, but is best known for Garner’s celebrity status raising publicity in early off-road motor-sports events. In 1978, he (and Steve McQueen) was one of the inaugural inductees in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Garner signed a three-year sponsorship contract with American Motors Corporation (AMC). His shops prepared ten 1969 SC/Ramblers for the Baja 500 race. Garner did not drive in this event because of a film commitment in Spain that year. Nevertheless, seven of his cars finished the grueling race, taking three of the top five places in the sedan class.

Garner had a ’70 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 dubbed “the Goodyear Grabber” built to compete in the 1969 NORRA (National Off-Road Racing Association) Mexican 1000, better known as the Baja 1000. The car was so named as Goodyear was promoting its new “Grabber” line of tires. The chassis

itself was lifted 3-inches to make room for custom control arms and ball joints, as well as spindles modified from a Chevy pickup, which were much tougher than the stock spindles on a 4-4-2. A serious rollcage was called for, and a 50-gallon fuel tank was installed for the long, rough journey across

Garner’s best finish in two years and six races with the Goodyear Grabber was second place in the 1969 Baja 1000. Between the last checkpoint and the finish line, a rear tire came loose and busted the spare oil cans, just as the 410 big block decided to start burning oil. Garner’s 45-minute lead evaporated, leaving him to finish in second place.

He also drove the 1977 Delta 88 pace car.

Years after he stopped racing off-roaders he paid a visit to the Mendenhall family in California who had purchased one of his original Grabbers. He posed for this photo for the family.

Meeting Minutes (continued)

The Rocket Page 15Page 2 The Rocket

by Javier Camba
