Last year’s Sunflower Rallye: Started @ the McKenzie’s house the evening before.

It started out honestly enough with a great variety of entries, and club members. Food & drink was shared openly by all.

But those 2 guys from Iowa in the Acid yellow BMW took the honors. I’m still friends with them!

If it weren’t for the invention of the Ford Cortina, Triumph tr3, MGB, Datsun 510 or any version of a Lotus since 1962, BMW wouldn’t have had a game plan, let alone a team with 2 iphones set on full timing. They were good. They know Rallye.

Ken Smiley’s ’56 Jaguar XK-140 OTS-SE (Ken is not a member yet!)

Not many of you under 60 remember Captain Midnight on the radio or,Jet Jackson on early TV.

But in B&W I watched him drive his early 120 w/rear skirts to catch the elusive bad guys... if only for a few episodes on my folks 21” Sylvania. Now I’m much older and... history is in color!

OK. If any of you missed the future of the 50’s I will understand.

The flowing shape of the Jags of the time set the tempo of things to come.

The Jaguar XK-E is still my mental benchmark to overcome in fine design.

Do you have a story to share?

Yes, the special edition cars got the same heads from the C-Type race cars that were conquering LeMans in the early 50’s. Basically a ported and polished version of the standard head that had much better flow characteristics. My dad bought the car in the late 60’s (guessing 68 or 69) from some college kid who needed to sell it to get back to college or raise money for something. He drove it as a weekend toy until it developed a leak in the gas tank in 1971 and then put it away in his garage to fix it the following weekend, then that got pushed off and the car was later towed to my house in 2001 where I began the slow process of working on it in my spare time (which was slowed down by marriage, 2 kids, etc.) but eventually we got it running again over labor day weekend in 2008 and then I began doing more work on it until it was driveable again and we surprised my dad on his 80th birthday with the car. – Ken Smiley

LABCC Banking. By James Mckenzie

LABCC display at Peoples Bank at 31st and Iowa. We tried to get Gordon’s mini inside for the display and came close. We had it indoors but couldn't get it around the corner because of a counter in the way. We also had a display at Peoples Bank at 6th and Wakarusa. - James

If not Gordon’s Mini, at least a photo of Gordon! Great publicity for our club.

Although James owns an excellent MGB-GT, he spends his other creative resources on anything from a ’59 El Camino to a robust Semi-Rat VW driver. We all need to submit what we have in the garage, and what we plan to do with them.

Clancy Schmidt’s Ford powered “Frite” A HPT; By Bill Fisher

Clancy & friends put together this Box Sprite Chumpcar powered b y a 2L Ford Focus motor.Scary fast in a straight line - a fright to hold onto in the corners, hence the name.A front sway bar was hastily installed over night, but I wasnʼt there for Sundayʼs round.

As you can see by the “Frite-Stripe” on each rear tire, suspension dynamics were at an all-time low.

But spirits were high.

Below is “Ilene Dover.”

Meeting Notes of September 4, 2012 Meeting @ Bambino’s Italian Restaurant.

As Pres. Eric was held over at work, Vice-President Allan Miller called for the meeting to begin.

There were 22 in attendance, including Zeke, who seldom is able to make the meetings, and Molly and Gary Emery. The Emerys drove their Spridget racer to the meeting. Also in attendance was Mike Pearson, who brought along books that he purchased at the Kansas City All British Car Show. The books are from the late 1940’s and are instructional on car repairs when parts are not available.

Ken Bishop reported that Vic and Mary Wallace were injured in an accident while at their summer home in Michigan.

The Ralley is coming up fast with the date being October 21st. The planning committee confirmed that they will meet on Friday, September7 at Munchers.

James McKenzie reported that he and Susan took the 1960 Bugeye to the KC show. It was admired for being so original and there were lots of pictures taken of it and questions asked by those who have or are currently restoring their own cars.

Mike Pearson asked for feedback on the Kansas City show and its location at Zona Rosa. Although it was agreed to be a nice event, most thought that the lighting in the parking garage was strange and not complimentary for the cars and their beautiful and expensive paint jobs. It was also noted that we seemed to be preaching to the choir being so isolated in a parking garage in the corner of a mall, rather than being out somewhere that could be easily seen by pedestrians and traffic alike.

Upcoming shows include the big antique car show in Ottawa on September 15th, the Scottish Festival in McPherson on September 22nd, and the big antique car show at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on October 7th.

Allen suggested an economy run and it was decided that on Saturday, September 8th, anyone interested would meet at the new HyVee gas station on 23rd Street and drive to Ottawa. They would check the mileage and then proceed to the antique tractor show and finish the day by driving on to Williamsburg for Guy and Mae’s ribs.

Dave and Debbie announced that their annual Halloween party would be held on October 27th at 5:00 pm. Please bring a dish to pass and they will provide the meat items.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, Susan McKenzie
