Questions5

with Regina ScovillAdministrative Assistant, Pastoral Care and Senior Adults

1 What is your role at Calvary Church? My role at Calvary is assisting the Pastoral Care

Department and Sr. Adult ministries. We serve as a team at the yellow House ministering to those who are hurting or are in need, whether it is due to financial stress, illness, counseling, grief or assisting the elderly. God has brought me through many difficult times and it is in this journey that He has prepared me to serve in this role.

2 What encourages you most as you minister at Calvary?

What encourages me most is to witness God’s power, mercy and grace evidenced in people’s lives. Christ is our greatest example of what it means to be a servant and we have the opportunity to be a servant daily and to be Christ to others. It amazes me how God uniquely gifts each of us with the heart and compassion to serve others during their time of need. One of my favorite songs is “Heal the Wound but Leave the Scar.” We are all wounded in one way or another, the scar reminds us of how God has healed us. It’s out of the scar that we can minister to others and meet them where they’re at.

3 How have you experienced life{together}?

I have experienced community in several ways at Calvary. In a women’s small group study, with women who have a deep desire to walk closely with the Lord. We have a constant flow of prayer and praises between us, sharing our vulnerabilities, heartaches, fears and celebrations. We recognize our dependency on the Lord as we pray for one another. I am blessed to be a part of their community.

I also serve in the Stephen Ministry with a wonderful group of people who love the Lord and have a passion to serve others. We pray for one another and seek ways to be Christ to others.

4 How has God recently revealed Himself in your community?

God has revealed himself to us in His faithfulness to provide and care for us. His word is our strength and power to persevere. It is wonderful to see God move in the hearts of those here at Calvary to give to the Food Pantry, Benevolence and in ministry. Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me , all you who are weary and I will give you rest…for I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest for your souls…”

5 How can the Calvary family pray for you and your ministry this month?

Please pray for all of our ministries that flow from the yellow House. My prayer is that we are always merciful and compassionate and that we are relentless in serving others. Pray for our Grief Share ministry that will be going on this winter, for those who have lost loved ones. Also, pray for our upcoming “Living a Full Life” workshop in February. This exciting Senior Adult Ministry workshop will give us a new look at retirement and how to live a full and rich life in the Lord in the prime of our life.

In The Joshua Covenant, Calvary members and ex-feds, Diane and David Munson (former Federal Prosecutor and NCIS Agent), reveal what happens when CIA agent Bo Rider moves his family to Israel after years of clandestine spying around the world. Bo serves in America’s Embassy using his real name

only to discover a menacing plot jeopardizing him. When his family faces danger while exploring Israel’s treasures, a famous Bible scholar helps Bo in ways he never thought possible. Will he survive the greatest threat ever to his career, his family and his life? Glimpse tomorrow’s startling headlines as Bo risks it all to stop an enemy spy.

In Kelly’s Chance (book one of the series) Kelly McGregor’s life along

the Lehigh Canal has nothing in common with the beauty that surrounds her. Forced to help her family survive by driving her father’s mules as they pull boatloads of coal

to the city, Kelly determines that she will never be stuck in a loveless mar-

riage like her parents. Her dream is to save enough money in order to escape the drudgery of home and become an artist. When a shopkeeper along the canal gives Kelly an outlet for her drawings, she wonders if she may be starting to realize her dream. But as she gets to know Mike and learns about the God he worships, she begins to understand that life may offer even more that she has dared to hope.

the blessing of community by Mary Hulst

Hearing about all the community groups that were going to be starting at the October Launch, my friend Liz Benham and I felt like we should start a women’s group in our area. We’ve been in groups before, but never anything like this. It has been on my heart for some time to do, but humanly speaking, I thought my schedule was too full. We decided to take a step of faith and sign up to start a group.

We are so glad we did! We meet every other week and have only met a few times, but are already bonding with each other. We are a group with a variety of backgrounds and ages, but have that common need as women to fellowship with other women. In our busy society and in such a big church, it’s easy to just come and go without really speaking with anyone. A community group provides the opportunity to share in each other’s life journey, whether going through difficult times or peaceful times. We can uphold each other in prayer and share the burden.

I’ve been in Sunday School classes and other Bible studies, but have never done a small group in my home before. It is such a blessing and I am so encouraged when we meet. I was talking to a friend of mine from a different church and she was telling me that she had been thinking of doing a neighborhood group in her home, but was nervous about it. I strongly encouraged her to take the step. I told her she would get so much more out of it than she put into it. What a blessing to share with one another in the Lord.

Begins Sunday, January 15 | 11:15am | Room 131

Have you ever wanted to ask a question about the Bible and didn’t because you were sure people would think you were inadequate or would wonder what the heck you were doing in church? This is a class you need to investigate. It’s called Simple Faith because we make it a point to keep it simple. At one time we have both felt inadequate, like we didn’t quite fit in here, and have since become passionate about meeting with people who feel the same way.

If you have been at Calvary for 40 years or this is your first time, come check out Simple Faith. The next class begins Sunday, January 15 at 11:15am in room 131-33. All you have to bring is a Bible, if you have one, or if you don’t we’ll get you one.

Each week we take our time going through a study guide and learning along with you what God is teaching. Remember, the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask. To sign up for our next class, contact Karen ([email protected]) at ext. 5173.

New groups will be forming on February 12 at our Community Group Launch. Sign up for the Launch online (calvarygr.org) or at the Connection Point on Sundays. We would love for you to experience community here at Calvary Church.

Whether you’ve never been in a group, or have tried one before, we encourage you to join one of our February groups. What are you waiting for? Sign up today.

Contact Karen ([email protected]) at ext. 5173 if you have any questions.

Coming February 12

Community Group Launch!

New group launch date: February 12

Time: 4:30pm

Location: Fellowship Hall

Who: Anyone who wants deeper relationships in community

Signup: Online at calvarygr.org or in the Connection Point

Info: Contact Karen ([email protected]), ext. 5173

Why should I join a Community Group?

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other believers and do life together. We believe that authentic Christian community is the ideal place for sustained growth to occur.

When you engage in community, you will also be giving of yourself to others and creating a place where everyone is safe and cared for. It is an opportunity to follow Christ by investing your life into the lives of others.

What kind of a commitment would this be?

Most groups meet every other week for 1 ½ -2 hours, at a time and location that works out for them. Each group decides the elements of group meetings, but they should in-clude a time for prayer and fellow-ship as well as learning from God’s Word. We ask for a commitment to meet together at least eight times. When you attend a launch event, you will be placed with a group that best meets your needs.

How can I become a group facilitator?

If you are a friendly person that can facilitate a discussion, would you consider being a group facilitator? Many groups share the responsi-bility of hosting and leading the discussion. We provide you with questions based on the week’s sermon. We ask that you be (or are willing to become) a member of Calvary Church. you do not need to have all the answers, do all the talking or do everything perfectly. For more details, please contact us in Calvary Community (956-9377). We would love to meet with you.

Happy New Serve Year! By Judie Fielstra

8 | January 2012 | calvarygr.org

It’s always interesting to me how most of us will look at the new year as a fresh start or a new beginning. Many will even make New year’s resolutions. A new year seems like the perfect time to do something to make a change in our life.

“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Ephesians 4:16).

As Paul tells us in Ephesians, God has called and gifted each believer in the body of Christ here at Calvary Church for service. Jesus’ entire life on earth was spent in service. First serving God and then serving His people. Just like Jesus, we have been put here to serve.

Serving God where He wants is very important. We all need to listen to our hearts and then follow God’s leading. Sometimes God will lead us in places of service we do not want to go. Six years ago God called me to head up the serving ministry at Calvary. Did I hear God calling me? No. In fact it was Pastor Jim Samra who told me that God had told him that I was the person for this job. At the time I loved what I was doing at Calvary and was not interested in changing my position. I felt I was too old to try something new. I was not happy about this at all!

Many times I would run into someone in the halls and they would tell me they were praying for me. Often it was people I hardly knew. This was such an encouragement.

Then after much prayer asking God to change my heart, I read this

somewhere. “If you’re an eagle at heart, what are you doing on that perch? Do you have any idea how greatly you are needed to soar and explore?”

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

God has made it possible for me to soar and explore and I love to see how He has led.

If you see a need at Calvary, what is your response? Do you say, “Someone else will fill that need” or “That’s really not my gifted area” or “They don’t need me”.

I was placed in an area where my gifts didn’t fit, but there was a need and I filled it. Sometimes God takes us down rocky paths so we can trust Him more for the details and to help us grow.

Did you know that we average 120 children in our nursery ministry? That means we need 50 helpers to rock an infant, read a story, or play with a toddler every Sunday morning. Would you be willing to soar and explore and serve in this ministry? Or what about the need for a 3rd grade teacher and helpers in children’s ministry?

How about “soaring and exploring” in 2012 by serving at Calvary Church? Will you answer His call to serve?

SOAR andEXPLORE

Ready to soar and explore, but not sure where to start? Discovery can help you learn more about your spiritual walk, your spiritual gifts and connecting with others at Calvary as you meet with trained staff members. Fill out a Discovery card at one of the Information Centers to receive your packet or contact Sharon Kaiser ([email protected]) at ext 5077.

How do you get almost 750 individuals impacted with Special Needs, almost 50 in wheelchairs, several more with walkers into the Sanctuary to experience the gospel acted out in a clear manner? Well, you first need a church willing to pull out pews to accommodate the wheelchairs. Second you need a choir, orchestra, and cast willing to put on Jesus and share His love for everyone. Third, you need to invite the people to come. Fourth, you need a handful of amazing leaders to manage the details of the effort along with about 30 volunteers to assist, welcome, and direct the multitudes as they come into the presence of the King!

When you mix this all together you come up with a very special night of sharing and showing the

love of Christ to indi-viduals that just don’t get many opportuni-ties to experience God in this way. Our Spe-cial Needs community came, some from as far away as Gaylord,

Michigan and they were blessed. As they left, many commented about how they were blessed by the drama, the music, and the message of hope from a King who loves them just as they are. The Bagman and the King is a message that is all too real for a host of our Special Needs com-munity: individuals who are not regarded for who they are but for what they seem to be by others who judge from outside appearances.

Thank you Calvary Church, choir, orchestra, cast, volunteers and especially those who led the effort, for putting on Jesus that Thursday night in early December. The Body of Christ, “the perceived lesser parts” had a great time hearing of the King and worshipping Him with you!

Festival of lights - special needs style“...Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame” Luke 14:21

Behind the ScenesServing at Calvary with Mark Potter

Where do you currently serve at Calvary?Currently I serve by singing in the choir, teaching a Sunday School class, and teaching in the DivorceCare 4 Kids program. I also help out with special events such as single parenting workshops, Veggie Tales movies, and God Loves Grand Rapids.

How did you begin serving at Calvary? I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so it takes me a while

to get things sometimes. I had attended Calvary for quite some time before getting involved with the single parent class on Sunday mornings. While I was in that class, Calvary decided to start a DivorceCare 4 Kids (DC4K) program, a ministry for kids between 5-12 whose parents are either divorced, or who are going through it currently. After hearing about the program I knew immediately that it was something God wanted me to do. Having gone through a divorce myself, I was very familiar with the intense pain, confusion, frustration, and hopelessness that it can create in both adults and in children. I felt strongly that God wanted to use my experience and use the passion that I have for teaching by serving in DC4K.

What challenges have you encountered in your ministry?I have a pretty demanding job and a busy schedule, so sometimes I show up with baggage and stress from the day. Before we start DC4K, we take time to pray, recognizing that we all bring our own unique distractions. We pray for each other, we pray for the kids, and we pray for the parents. It’s amazing how many times I’ve shown up feeling totally unready to minister to the kids, only to have God calm my spirit and give me the words and the attitude I need.

How has God blessed you through serving?God has taught me three incredibly powerful, personal lessons from serving: God can redeem anything, God gave me passions to use for Him in serving others, and the joy of serving WITH others. I learned in a very intense way why God says that He hates divorce. It’s destructive, hurtful, and completely counter to how God wants us to live out love and commitment. And kids are the innocent victims. It’s amazing to me that God could use something so painful, something He hates, and turn it around and use it in my life to help others. But He does this kind of wild, miraculous stuff all the time!

One of the coolest things about being part of Calvary is that because it’s a large church, it’s pretty much a given that there’s a way to use your passions in service. I love music, so I have the honor of singing in the Calvary Choir. I enjoy teaching, and there are many opportunities to use that gift. I can’t tell you how rewarding and fulfilling it is to do something that you’re truly passionate about, and use it in a way that helps others and gives glory to God. I’m not being overly dramatic when I say that it really does give meaning and purpose to life.

Some of the most amazing people I know I’ve met while serving alongside them. I’ve had the privilege of meeting truly selfless, compassionate, encouraging, genuine, Christ-like people as a result of being involved at Calvary. As you can imagine, when you feel like you’re doing something really important with other people, you develop a powerful bond with those people, and you get to know them in a very meaningful and transparent way. I value those relationships more than I can say. I guarantee you that God has given you a gift to use for service, and I guarantee you that when you use that gift at Calvary, it will change your life. Try it! Tell me if I’m wrong!

Our first short-term team for 2012 will be on the ground January 19-29. The eight people pictured right will return to India to work alongside our missionaries, Jonathon & Hannah Victor.

One of the purposes of this team – which includes two doctors and a pharmacist – is to set up a medical clinic to treat individuals from the villages in the region. They will also be doing some more work on the playground that was set up by last year’s team. The team is asking specific prayer for:

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.

one Heart for the CityUpdate and Thank You

Dear Calvary Church,We want to take this opportunity to share with you the impact of your Christmas Project “One Heart for the City.” When I visited your three worship services in November and shared with you the concept of “undecorating the Christmas Trees” we had no idea just what we were in for. By the third service ALL the Christmas bulbs were gone and in your hands. you took the bulbs, purchased the items listed, donated the gifts, and transported them to our downtown space. We were blown away by the awesomeness of your generosity! your heart for the Heartside district of Grand Rapids was felt and shown when we witnessed your gifts being delivered on December 12.

A few families with servant hearts from Calvary helped us receive, sort, and take an inventory of the bounty you donated. Then, on Wednesday, Decem-ber 14 we asked volunteers to help us give your gifts to deserving people in need. We gave away jackets, hats, gloves, socks, boots, and much more! We were able to see the thankful faces of the people we have come to know by name. your blessing helped us share the love of Christ with many people. Let us tell you that it was “like Christmas” downtown. So, we want to say a huge “THANK yOu” for thinking of us and helping us take your blessings and bless our friends in our neighborhood. your love will be felt all winter and will not be forgotten. We do share one heart for the city…it’s the heart of our Lord (Matthew 9:35-38).

In Christ (Our Light),Shane & Heather CoxTake Hold Church

August 2011 marked the end of Shane’s tenure as a pastoral resident at Calvary Church, and the beginning of his status as a Calvary-supported missionary. One has only to chat with Shane for a few minutes to hear his love for the Lord, and the people in the Heartside district here in Grand Rapids. As you can probably imagine, Take Hold Church struggles to make ends meet, as do Shane & Heather personally. There are many ways to support Shane & Heather and Take Hold. If you have resources to give– finances, time, or talent – and would like to be a part of this dynamic ministry, contact Shane ([email protected]) at 608-6822.

Missions & Outreach 2012: Are you a “Glocal Christian”? Mark you calendars! We will have a spring Missions Event coming in April that will focus on being a “Glocal Chris-tian” – thinking globally, acting locally. As such, we will be challenged to put hands and feet to our faith within the Grand Rapids community.

On Sunday, April 15, Marvin Williams will be our special speaker, and the following Saturday, April 21, we will move out into the community to put our faith to work.

I recently had the opportunity to travel to one of the least reached regions of the world with several other men from Calvary. The purpose of my trip was to meet with fellow Christians who are working to spread God’s love and His message of salvation.

From the moment I stepped off of the plane, a feeling of oppression blanketed me. As I surveyed the buildings, landscape, and people I couldn’t help but feel a sense of lifelessness. From the concrete buildings and lampposts to the worn and neglected roads, even the hardened and absent expressions on people’s faces… all seemed to gasp for breath. As one person put it, “it is like someone sucked the soul out of this place.” As I continued my week, I began to see more deeply into people’s lives, enjoy-ing laughter and building friendships. However, I couldn’t shake that initial sensation of the death blanketing this land.

One morning toward the end of my stay, we awoke early for a hike in some nearby mountains. The cold air swept around us and the snow crunched beneath our boots. In silence and deep thought we walked through the pre-dawn darkness along a val-ley between two ranges of mountain peaks. As the morning wore on and the stars faded, I realized that the darkness hadn’t broken. We still lay in a shadow, hidden from the light of day. It was then that God touched my heart and opened my eyes with the realization of what I had been experiencing all week.

Kyrgyzstan lies in the shadow of the mountain. years of communist control, political unrest, violence, and isolation from the gospel have left the majority of this nation in darkness – hidden from the light of God’s love and salvation.

But the story doesn’t end there. Just as my hiking experience proved, the sun and light of day broke over the mountain’s peaks, shinning its radiance and the hope that comes with it upon the land below. This is what I envision for Central Asia. That as we continue to go and support local workers that God’s unstoppable presence will burst forth and His light and life will overcome, rescuing people from the clutches of a soulless existence and provide them with new life in Christ as their Lord and savior.

STUDENT MISSIONS

WE BElIEvEin serving and being used by God in various ways. Each summer we take students locally, across the country, and around the world as we partner with various ministries and missionaries to serve on missions trips. While we believe in the work and ministry that takes place on these trips, we also strongly believe that mission trips are a place of growth for students--spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.

This summer is no different. We’ll be taking students on trips to both urban and rural settings and have them interacting with kids, teenagers and adults in those communities as well as with students from other churches. They will be serving by doing work projects, leading kids clubs and sports camps, helping lead summer camps for teenagers and more. Team members will have unique opportunities to develop relationships as they prepare to go and serve.

The hustle and bustle of Charleston—West Virginia’s capital city—stands in contrast to other more rural towns nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. But the city still maintains the rugged beauty and relaxed, comfortable pace that characterizes West Virginia. Our group will primarily serve children’s programs and local ministries.

This summer we are partnering with a local church in Honduras. We’ll be joining a team of Honduran teenagers and working alongside of them to minister to young children at an elementary school, helping to spruce up their school, and put on a camp for the church’s Hero’s Club program. It is sure to be a time where God will speak into your life, change your heart, and use you for His glory.

Be a part of this amazing missions trip where we serve in our own community. Often we fail to notice all the needs that are all around us. On this trip we will serve the needy right here in Grand Rapids. We will partner with urban ministries that are reaching out to those in need. Don’t miss out on this life-changing experience.

a note from the eldersCommunity Groups{Life Together} is not just our Ephesians sermon series theme; it’s becoming a new experience for many in our Calvary Church family. We are thrilled that more than 200 people joined one of the 22 community groups that were started last fall. There are now more than 60 neighborhood groups meeting throughout the greater Grand Rapids area. Twenty-five Adult Sunday Classes meet weekly here at church and fifteen small groups meet in our Monday Night Bible Study. If you are not yet involved in a community group, we want to encourage you to sign up for our February 12 community group launch.

Connection Point The welcome team that staffs our Connection Point reports that they are seeing new faces every week. Many new visitors are new to Grand Rapids and are looking for a spiritual home. The Connection Point is playing a vital role in guiding people to Adult Sunday Classes, small groups, children & youth ministries and everything that Calvary Church has to offer. The elders want to thank the First Impressions Team for creating this new place that is making a great first impression.

Space NeedsFor the past two years, the elders and deacons have been praying and fasting for God’s direction regarding our space needs. We have now engaged Doug Pasma, an architect with Pasma Group Architects, to design a master site plan and possible solutions for our various space challenges. Doug lives in Chicago, but grew up at Calvary, so he has a special love for what God is doing here. His work will help us understand how we can use our building more effectively and create more ministry space to reach more people. Our goal is to develop enough information so that as a church we can think through possible options and seek God’s direction for how we should move forward. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” The elders would like to invite our Calvary family to pray with us as we seek God’s wisdom. In January, we will be forming a Nehemiah Prayer Team that will receive regular updates about our needs and prayer concerns. Watch the bulletin and our website for more information and sign-up opportunities soon.

Prayer GardenThe elders want to thank Warren DeHaan and the Prayer Garden Team who are investing many hours of prayer, research, and discussion to develop plans for our new prayer garden. Warren’s vision for this project goes beyond the physical space. His goal is that the prayer garden fosters a greater passion for prayer, a place where we can spend quality time listening to God and praying more effectively. They have chosen Ephesians 3:14-21 to guide their thoughts. The team will be meeting with the architect to integrate the prayer garden into our master site plan. Please pray for Warren and the team as they seek God’s direction for each step.

StudyOn the first Tuesday of every month the elders meet for prayer and an extended time of study. Recently, we have been discussing a paper that Jim Samra wrote on his study break, “How to Interpret the Bible.”

New Testament writers use the Old Testament stories as metaphors to illustrate truth. The classic method for interpretation is to identify a biblical principle, lift them from the account, and re-contextualize them into our situation. A complementary way of interpretation is to view Scripture as the script of a story that includes us with the Holy Spirit as the writer/director. We can’t just hear God’s Word, we must “live the Bible” though the power of the Spirit. God has entrusted the elders with the responsibility of helping people live the Bible. We desire that everyone who attends Calvary Church understand how the whole Bible fits together and discover their place in the grand story that God is telling.

Special Needs MinistryIn October, Marv Snedeker and Elleen Fitzgerald shared a report regarding our Special Needs Ministry. Calvary has one of the most extensive special needs ministries in Michigan, if not the Midwest. Our special needs congregation is approximately 125. On average, 110 attend Sunday Morning programming and about 175 attend Saturday Praise & Worship services. The first strategy was to take special needs children out of the classroom and provide ministry designed specifically for them, now the program has matured to an inclusion strategy which places special needs children back into children’s ministry classes. The elders are praying about what God is asking us to do next in our special needs ministry. We want to thank all of our special needs staff, volunteers and families for their tireless efforts. Hebrews 6:10, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”

OfficersThe new officers who will be serving this year are:Elder Chairman – Jim DeVries; Deacon Chairman – Bob Bass; Elder Vice Chairman – Larry Hulst; Treasurer – Jeff Rogers; Elder Clerk – Ron Haas; Deacon Clerk – Tom Miller

New MembersWe have welcomed 41 new members into our Calvary family since September. We praise the Lord for these folks who have made Calvary Church their home. If the Lord has been prompting you to get more involved at Calvary, our next membership class will be Saturday, January 21 from 9:00am-2:30pm. Register online or contact Brenda at ext. 5650 by January 16.

PrayerThe elders meet for prayer from 6:15-7:15pm on the first Tuesday of each month, in Room 211. If you would like the elders to pray for you or would simply like to join them in prayer, please stop by. We are very grateful for the strong prayer support from so many in our congregation. Each one of us has been encouraged by someone who has come up to us and said, “I just want you to know that I am praying for you.” your prayers for Jim and the elders are vital. Ephesians 6:18, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” Thank you for praying.

Respectfully Submitted by Ron Haas, Elder Clerk

Many Americans ring in the New year by counting down the ball drop in Times Square followed the next morning by watching a few parades and a lot of college football. In Japan,

people celebrate New year’s Eve by cleaning house and putting their businesses in order to prepare for the coming year. To them, the New year represents the start of a clean slate for everyone. Japanese pay special attention to the first time something is done in the new year. On January 1, thousands of people drive to the coast or climb a mountain so they can experience Hatcuhinode, the first sunrise of the new year.

Scripture emphasizes “first” decisions. Jesus taught that instead of wor-rying about what we will eat, drink, or wear, we should, “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:32).

King Hezekiah understood this “first things first” principle. At the tender age of 25 he became king with a desire to do what was right in the Lord’s eyes (2 Chronicles 29). In the first month of his first year, his first official act was to open up the doors of the temple. Israel had lost interest in worshipping God and the Temple had become a really nice storage unit. Hezekiah challenged the Levites and priests to clean house. It took eight days to remove all the junk and another eight days to consecrate the temple. We can learn three important principles about generous giving from Hezekiah’s experience.

1GIvING STARTS WITH OUR HEARTThe temple was in disarray because King Ahaz had been unfaithful.

Hezekiah knew that Israel needed to confess their sins in order to restore a right relationship with the Lord. After he had purified the temple, he sacrificed sin offerings for the people. Then he invited “all whose hearts were willing” to bring burnt offerings to worship the Lord. Hezekiah’s ac-tions remind us that God wants our hearts before he wants our offerings. Isaiah prophesied, “Stop bringing meaningless offerings!” “Wash and

make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight!” (Isaiah 1:13, 16). God is more interested in pure hearts than our philanthropy. Jesus repeated this principle in Matthew 5:24, “First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.” The believers in Corinth un-derstood that giving starts with the right heart attitude, “but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will” (2 Corinthians 8:5).

2GIvING IS AN ACT OF WORSHIPHezekiah led Israel in worship to rededicate the temple. “As the of-

fering began, singing to the LORD began also, accompanied by trumpets and the instruments of David king of Israel. The whole assembly bowed in worship, while the singers sang and the trumpeters played. All this continued until the sacrifice of the burnt offering was completed. When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone present with him knelt down and worshiped” (2 Chronicles 29:27-29). Our giving should also be a powerful moment in our worship services. When the ushers pass the plate, don’t view it as an obligation, but a spiritual act of worship!

3 GIvING SHOULd BE ABUNdANTWhen they counted the offering, it totaled 600 bulls and 3,000 sheep

and goats! Their offering was so extravagant that the priests needed the Levites’ help to prepare all the burnt offerings, fellowship offerings, and drink offerings for worship. Their incredible generosity caused Hezekiah and all the people to rejoice at what God had done in their midst. Paul reminded the Corinthian believers that people would praise God for their obedience and generosity (2 Corinthians 9:13). Likewise, God wants us to experience the blessings of generosity.

As you start this new year, maybe it’s time for a little spiritual house cleaning. How can you put God first in your heart, your worship and your giving? “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Mat-thew 6:21). If you would like to learn more about how to put first things first, please visit generousyou.org.

Children’s MinistryOne of the greatest behind the scenes ministry is the church nursery. Where else can you go to show love to someone else and receive so much more love in return? Currently we average 120 children in our nursery ministry. That means we need 50 helpers to rock an infant, read a story, or

play with a toddler. Will you prayerfully con-sider joining this team that is almost invisible, but so highly rewarding? Please contact Heidi Storm ([email protected]) at ext. 5161 to learn more.

Choir & OrchestraIf you are interested in joining the Choir or Or-chestra, please contact Kristen White ([email protected]) at ext. 5155.

Shut-In MinistryIf you have a heart of mercy for those who are lonely and compassion for those who are suf-fering, please prayerfully consider joining the Shut-In Ministry Team. This ministry is dedi-cated to reaching out to Calvary members who are no longer able to attend church services and functions. Contact Rich Dyer ([email protected]) .

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and

do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or sign up at calvarygr.org.
