Transcript of Benidorm or Bust - The Trip!
ON A GREY AND COLD MORNING THE TEAM GATHER AT BLACKPOOL TO START THEIR INTREPID JOURNEY
Hello,
Way back in September 2013 during a conversation on how we
could make Paul’s 40th birthday a bit special, well let’s face it he
is getting on a bit so we needed to make it an adventure and
that is what he got! The Benidorm or Bust Rally. Having
decided that this was his big 40 adventure, it was decided that
we would also raise money for Help for Heroes and set ourselves
a target of £1,000. Back then in September, the start of the rally
at the end of April seemed a long way off but soon the months
galloped by and it was March and we had no car, no
sponsorship/donations so we needed to get our act together—
fortunately our marketing consultant, Sarah and myself rose to
the occasion and took the reigns and soon had us all organised.
Every member of the Collision Solutions and OCBS, OCL teams
along with Newcoats’s Bodyshop played a part in making this
event happen and raise over £4,000 in the process.
We hope that we have managed to say thank you to everyone
but please forgive us if we have not. We hope that you enjoy
the brief reports that Paul and the team sent back and should
you wish for copies of any of the photos in the following pages,
please email us on [email protected].

Day One—Blackpool to Dover
Negotiating our way along the promenade at Blackpool on a
grey and cold April morning with instructions that meant
crossing the tram lines into the car park, we wondered what
we had let ourselves into. We soon found out - there were
already a number of teams in the car park and everyone was
in good spirits despite the weather. Our team supporters
were already chatting with a few of the other teams and as
usual Sarah (our marketing lady) was barking instructions the
minute we got out the car, getting us organised. Lisa our
Sales Director and who’s idea this was for my birthday
present was busy with sorting out the pop up banners with
the help of Ruth from one of our sister companies OCL -
cameras snapping and interviews taken by the local press
and posing for pictures meant that we had just enough time
for getting the car checked one final time ready for the off.
The great thing was that we could hand over a cheque for
four times our original target of £1,000 (we upped that to
£2,000 back at the end of March when the efforts of the
companies field reps surpassed that) to Steve Rogers the
local representative from Help for Heroes which was brilliant.

sponsors decorated the car

As ‘newbies’ to this sort of rally, we were not sure what
to expect but it soon became apparent that whatever
happened there was a good back-up team in Steve, the
Benidorm or Bust organiser and the other teams.
Forty nine teams set off from Blackpool with others
joining the rally at Birmingham and Dover with a total of
ninety eight teams participating, every one of them doing
it for their favourite charity.
Setting off around 10:00 we headed for our first night n
Dover before catching the ferry early—very early the next
morning.

board.

VIVA LE FRANCE! CALAIS TO POITIERS
Arriving in Calais around 10:00 local time, we headed towards Rouen without event, stopping just on the outskirts to tank
up with fuel—well let’s face it with a V6 engine in an old Omega Estate, a tank is not going to get us very far! Mind you
we were impressed to see ‘Trotters Independent’ overtake us a little while later along the way. Our first stop of the day
was at Le Mans where we took a few pictures but as we were late we completed our first quiz question and carried on
towards Poitiers
Did I forget to mention the weather, everyone writes about the weather! Well it was ruddy awful, so far we had
endured storms, high winds and hailstones , it was more like being back in Lancashire. OK back on the road as the 465
miles today is quite a journey, especially as we are only averaging around 56 mph. Eventually we arrive in Poitiers at
around 18:00 and having checked our hotel, head to meet up with the other teams to hand in our quiz papers and a
quick beer before all the teams headed to a great little restaurant for some even greater food all washed down with
some local wine
Why do Dealers and Other Partners use One Call for Trade Parts
Representation?
Because they KNOW that it works!
Adieu France and Hola España
Setting off from Poitiers the next morning we had
a fairly smooth run down to the border via
Bordeaux then onwards down towards Spain.
Climbing high into the Pyrenees to a small village
called Canfranc, the village lies in a valley of the
Aragon River Valley. It is at an altitude of 1190
mtrs so a pretty steep climb to reach it. Found
Steve (BOB organiser) and a load of the other
teams there before heading off on the road again
to Zaragosa where we stopped for the night.
A Night on the Tiles in Zaragosa
The End is Nigh!
From Zaragoza we headed down towards the coast and Valencia where we stopped of for a quick
round of golf, well crazy gold actually which was one of the quests set by the BOB team. Then
heading down the coast to the meeting point at Benidorm, thankfully the weather was now glorious
and driving was although pleasant still a bit problematic due to the clutch and handbrake were
knackered.
Benidorm—We made it—Celebrations all round.
Our entrance into Benidorm and the Promenade turned a few heads and a few more were turned when the teams arrived at the Palm
Beach Hotel,, especially when the Jolly Green Giants jumped in the pool with their costumes and make-up on. Headed off to the Bar
for the prize giving—nah! Sorry we did not win a thing, but we had fun trying . Followed by a night on ‘ The Strip’
RACE DAY
Our final day on the Sunday was at
the Kart Track outside Benidorm -
followed by a sad farewell to our cars
A Sad Farewell
She served us well but now it is off to the scrapyard for her.
Plus a few more pics for good measure.
DAY 1 AND 2 ROUTE DAY 3 AND 4 ROUTE
HOPEFULLY SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!
