SUSTAINBILITY – BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Help Beckenham Primary School win a recycled playground. Send in your used beauty products between the dates of 9th October and 8th December. Each unit of used beauty products will count as 1 Playground Credit. The more waste we send in, the more chance we have of winning! A collection box is located outside Room 7. There is an opportunity to earn additional Playground Credits for Beckenham Primary School by voting for our school! Voting is open between 13th November and 8th December. You may vote once per day! Details on how to vote will be advertised on the Beckenham Primary School Facebook page closer to the date.

WASTE FREE WEDNESDAYS – TERM 4

During weeks one through to six, the entire school will be encouraged to pack a waste free lunch box on Wednesdays. Students will be rewarded with ‘besties’ weekly and students who participate each week will go into the draw to win a prize. Some tips for packing a waste free lunch are provided below. We can’t wait to see the variety of waste free lunchboxes packed each Wednesday!

Food and Drink Alternatives

Tetra Paks (juices, milks, etc)

Buy in bulk and then pack water, smoothies, milk or juice in a reusable drink bottle.

Chip and Lolly packets

Buy chips/snacks in bulk and pack in reusable containers. Bake your own muesli bars, muffins, biscuits and pack in reusable containers. Pack yoghurt in a small reusable container, filled at home from a bulk container.

Plastic bags and cling wrap

Pack food items in small containers inside a lunch box, use a bento style container or use beeswax wraps. *Buying in bulk is not only great for reducing waste, but also saves money!

SCITECH INCURSION

RECIPE

Banana muffins Banana muffins are an easy addition to any lunch box with very little extra sugar added - and you could add choc chips, macadamias or pecans to the mixture for variation.

Makes: 12 | prep: 0:10 | cook 0:15

Ingredients • 2 cups self-raising flour • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/3 cup (80mL) vegetable oil • 1 cup milk • 2 eggs • 1 cup mashed banana (2 large) • 12 pecan halves (optional)

Method Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Grease a 12 hole muffin pan or line with paper cases. Sift flour into a large bowl of an electric mixer. Add sugar and beat briefly to combine. In a glass measuring jug, pour in milk (up to 1 cup), oil (up to 1 1/3 cups) and add eggs, whisk to combine. Pour milk mix and bananas into dry ingredients, beat with until just combined. Spoon into muffin pans and top with a pecan half (if using) and bake for 15 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool slightly, and then place on rack to cool completely.

HELPING HANDS

HELPING HANDS BECKENHAM NEWS UPDATE

Dear Parents, the HHN team would like to welcome you all in Term 4. The break was enjoyed immensely by children and staff at HHN. As always, they participated in a variety of theme based days and enjoyed getting messy, competitive, creative, and imaginative. All the safety factors of children considered and implemented thoroughly throughout this period. For example, risk assessments were conducted prior to the excursions and incursions. The relevant policies were made available for parents to read. As usual during holidays, we also rehearsed safety evacuations and lock down drills to keep children updated with the current information. An assessment officer (Jaylene) from Education and Care Regulatory Unit Department of Local Government and Communities visited us on 10th and 11th October 2017. She spent two days with HHN staff and Regional Operations Manager to conduct the Assessment and Rating. During this visit we covered all the seven Quality Areas from the National Quality Standards and showed the way the HHN staff runs the educational program, within the service, on regular basis. We will get to know the outcome of this visit after 5 to 6 weeks and we will inform you all accordingly.
