WEG aR fuses are available from 20 to 2,000 A and are designed according to IEC 60.269-4 / UL 248-13 and dimensional requirements of DIN 43620.

Fuse OperationDuring a short-circuit, WEG’s aR high speed fuses will protect the installation limitating the prospect short-circuit current as presented on the image below� This drastic I2t energy reduction is the greatest differential concerning the protection of electronic devices with semiconductors, that are sensitive to current peaks�

General OverviewThe aR high speed fuses are applied for semiconductors protection against short-circuit that can be found, for example, in low voltage devices such as variable frequency drives and soft-starters�Manufactured and tested in accordance with IEC 60269-1, IEC 60269-4, UL 248-1 and UL 248-13 standards, with square or rectangular bodies, WEG’s high speed fuses are available in two types of construction:

Because they are aR (high speed protection classified), this fuse model does not have overload protection�They cannot operate above its rated current according indicated on the curve - time x current� Otherwise, the fuse would suffer a thermal overload, which would reduce its interruption capacity and lifetime� Thus, it is mandatory to use an additional overload protection device in order to complement equipment protection� Furthermore, the aR fuse ensures semiconductor protection by limiting the current and energy (I2t) during a short-circuit�

The aR high speed NH fuses are assembled in high quality ceramic body, filled with impregnated quartz sand, silver fuse element and plated copper terminals�This structure provides the optimum electrical insulation, mechanical strength and resilience against thermal shocks during fuse disconnection in reduced I2t values�

The fuse acts quickly to higher multiples of current values; breaking the circuit and preventing the presumed value of short-circuit current Ip to be reached�

The aR high speed NH fuse with blade contact allows easy installation and maintenance, by being installed in bases or switch-disconnectors� This last point also brings space savings to the application�

Time x current curves provide the graphical representation at ambient temperature of fuse elements fusion average time, also called pre-arc time, in relation to the prospective current Ip� FNH aR fuses with blade contact cannot operate above the 30-second time represented by the AA’ line� In order to protect the fuse against exposure to a condition above the line AA’, it is necessary an overload protection device�

Example: How to calculate maximum load current (continuous operation) for the fuse: Considering that the dimensioned fuse is FNH-630K-A (630 A, size 2) model. Option 1 - installed on BNH2-400. The maximum continuous operation current supported by the fuse will be 630 A x 0.7 = 441 A. Option 2 - installed on switch-disconnectors FSW400-3 or RFW400-3. The maximum continuous operation current supported by the fuse will be 630 A x 0.6 = 378 A.

Due to the power dissipated by aR fuses, you must use the derating that determines the maximum allowable current for WEG FNH aR fuses with blade contacts when installed on individual fixing bases or FSW and RFW switch-disconnectors�

1. ConceptualizationaR Class fuses according to the IEC 60269 feature low values of I2t and they are used for short circuit protection in semiconductor applications� Due to this fact, they should not be applied in situations of small overloads, because under these conditions, an improper operation and reduction of its breaking capacity can occur� Therefore, aR WEG high speed fuses uses a constant load A = 0�8� In other words, the fuse rated current must be at least 20% higher than the rated current of the circuit�

2. SizingSeveral conditions influenciate the current carrying capacity of a fuse, for example, ambient temperature, forced ventilation and the cross section of bars and cables� It is important to know that the cyclic event of overload is the most critical condition that can cause premature melting of the fuse element�Equipments with built-in semiconductors and consequently high speed fuses, are often subjected to repeated or cyclical overloads� Under these conditions, a fuse element temperature variation can melt or fatigate it, resulting in its improper operation� To avoid the consequences of cyclical overloads, WEG’s aR fuse must be dimensioned in order that its fusion current is preferently greater than the overload current for the same period�

Through the graphic “Variation of total I2t vs� operating voltage” in this catalog (page 14), is possible to evaluate that WEG’s I2t value for the aR FNH 250 A sized as 00 is reduced to 58% of the value at 690 V, resulting in 25,509 A2s ( 0�58x43,980)� Thus, the I2t value of this fuse meets the solution being less than the maximum supported by the soft-starter in this application (63,000 A2s)�

3.5 - Application in Base or Switch DisconnectorWhen using the NH aR blade contact fuse, it must be considered the current deratings according to the table on page 15� For example, on this case, for use on a FSW160-3 switch-disconnector, it is necessary to evaluate the maximum capacity of this switch-disconnector with this fuse (see derating on page 15)� That is, the load current should not exceed the current limited by the fuse + switch-disconnector� According to the table of reduction factor, on this case is 0�6, so the maximum current allows in continuous operation 250 x 0�6 = 150 A� As 150 A is greater than the load current (125 A), there is no limitation of using the full set FSW160-3 + 3x FNH00-250K-A.

Appendix 1: Sizing Criterias for aR High Speed NH Fuses with Blade Contact and Flush-End

In general, the following points should be checked for proper sizing of aR fuses:

J Current Circuit Type - AC or DC. For DC circuit: the maximum voltage on the fuse must respect the characteristic curve of application (graphs on pages 14 and 19 according to the type of fuse applied)�

J I²t of the fuse must be less than the l²t value permitted by the semiconductor. This analysis must consider the fuse value of l²t in relation to the voltage applied on it (look at the charts on pages 14 and 19 according to the type of fuse applied)�

J The rated current of the fuse. The rated current of the fuse must be at least 20% greater than the load rated current for the conditions without any cyclical overload� For cyclical conditions, such as application of soft-starters and variable frequency drives, the WEG aR fuse sizing must respect the specifications in Table 1 (page 21)�

J Installation of aR blade contact fuse on BNH base or FSW or RFW switch-disconnectors. The electric current value during constant operation applied on aR high speed NH blade contact fuses must not exceed the “reduced” values for use in fuse bases or switch-disconnectors (page 15)�

J Association of fuses in parallel. For this condition, the fuses in parallel must have the same characteristics, such as same size and rated current to avoid unbalanced load� The bars or cables should have the same dimensions to equalize all circuit impedances�I²t value of fuses connected in parallel is calculated by: I²t// = l²t x n²Where: I²t// - is the value of I2t of equal fuses set connected in parallel� I²t – is the value of I2t of a individual fuse, sized according to the circuit voltage�n – is the number of equal fuses connected in parallel�

3. Sizing Examples

3.1 - SSW06 Soft-Starter (220-690 V ac) 130 ASizing WEG aR fuses to protect a soft-starter SSW06 130 A and its three-phase load with the following characteristics:

J Maximum I²t value to protect a SSW06 130 A: 63,000 A²s J Supply voltage: 690 V ac J Load rated current in continuous operation: In = 100 A

J Starting current: Ip = 3 x In = 300 A J Acceleration time: 30s J Required to use a blade contact fuse in a fuse switch-disconnector

Therefore, considering only continuous operation of the load, a WEG fuse size 00 125 A should be used for each phase, with 6,350 l²t A2s at 690 V and deratings of 1xIn and 0�85 In when assembled on Individual base and switch disconnectors respectively� Either way, this fuse would operate improperly because in the example would occur cyclical overloads of 300 A during the start up�

3.3 - Analysis of Cyclic OverloadThe dimensioned fuse must respect the table 1 (page 21) to avoid an improper operation during the cyclical current of the load starting� On this way, in case of using WEG’s aR fuse size 00, the fusion current in 30s should be at least 600 A (300 x 2) and for sizes 1, 2 and 3, it should be at least 750 A (300 x 2�5)�
