    MAGICAL CONNECTION

For over 50 years, ski lits and slopes

have connected the villages o Lech

and Zrs to orm the White Ring cir-

cuit. This is the place that Matthias has

set his mind on today. His passion or

skiing and or the most beautiul skiing

resorts in the world has led him just

about everywhere. He has skied the

    inamous slopes o Chamonix, Da-

vos, St. Moritz, Kitzbhel and - being

    German not to orget Garmisch-

Partenkirchen. And yet, he has saved

the ultimate experience or this week.

Nowhere is this sport more at homethan here. On the Arlberg, you can eel

it every second, every inch, the 34-

year old is convinced. It almost seems

as i the weather had also waited or

    a wake-up call (which, o course, is a

    delusion since local weather conditions

are more than avourable most o the

time). With the frst rays o sun poking

through the window at breakast time,

the temperature is at minus 7 degrees

    C. Matthias openly admits that his skis

got another fnish at the sports shop

yesterday. Ater all, a special occasion

    deserves special preparation.

A cup o muesli, two slices o bread

and butter with jam, a croissant and

a sot-boiled egg later he is ready to

go. While Matthias is headed or the

Rfkopbahn cable car station, let us

throw a glance at history. More thanhal a century ago, skiing pioneer Sepp

Bildstein had the visionary idea to ar-

range ski lits in a circuit design so that

skiers in the area could easily com-

    mute between slopes without having

to take their skis o. Today, the White

Ring circuit boasts 22 km o ski runs

    spanning an impressive 5,500 metres

    o altitude, a breathtaking panorama

    included.

Upon his return to the hotel in the

evening, Matthias will rave about his

experience: On your frst cable car

ride up the Rfkop you almost orget

    about skiing. The Valluga, Flexenspit-

ze and Wildenstein are rocky giants on

the horizon, leaving no visitor unim-

pressed. More time, more space is

Lechs advertising slogan. Time to look

closely, space to leave ones tracesbehind.

On the slopes, no tree is in the way

o a unique panoramic view. At Zrs,

    6

Matthias takes a coee break, ollowed

    by an unprecedented downhill race

through the Zrser Tli. Blown away by

    the experience, Matthias fnishes his

tour o the White Ring without takinganother break. He summarizes: The

frst section till Zrs is easy terrain.

Like many others, he thinks that the

run down Madloch is a dierent story

a steep, northern slope that marks

the highest peak on the Ring at 2,483

    metres.

On Rud-Alpe the best skiing day in

my entire lie ends ater almost three

hours. He and his ellow skiers lit theirglasses to it and to the best view on

Lech. Again, the White Ring has held

    its promise.

The White Ring connects the villages o Lech, Zrs, Zug and Oberlech.

The circuit is no particular challenge to early intermediate skiers as it

oers mostly easy (blue) and intermediate (red) slopes. First-time visit-

ors to this unique ski circuit may want to try out the area check. OnSundays, the guides o the Lech Ski School are available to show skiers

around in the Ring and to share valuable insider tips.

In 2006, the White Ring Race, the worlds longest ski race, was organ-

ised or the frst time in commemoration o the circuits 50th annivers-

ary. The fth annual event, in 2011, attracted one thousand competit-

ors, who got enlisted within a matter o two hours. Olympic winner

Patrick Ortlieb, who operates a our-star hotel in Lech today, held the

speed record or several years. To him, the White Ring is still one o

the most extraordinary runs in the alpine region.

In 2010, Markus Weiskop o St. Anton became the new record holder.Weiskop completed the circuit in 44 minutes and ten seconds - skiers

below expert level should be warned not to ollow his example.

    kilometres in length. Just to

throw in some statistics: a skieraiming to head down on all of

    than 74,000 metres.

Silvretta Montafon. Starting this winter season, two new

cable cars will connect the Nova St. Gallenkirch/Gaschurn

and the Hochjoch/Schruns ski resorts. Thus, Silvretta Mon-

taon will become the largest ski resort in Vorarlberg.

    HochjochTotale. Vorarlbergs longest continuous downhill

run. Rising 1,700 metres, the Totale leads rom the Kreuz-

jochsattel (2,400 m) right down to the centre o Schruns.

Every Wednesday, at 7:15 a.m., tour participants rom

Schruns may hop on a Hochjochbahn cable car leading up

to the Kapell. From there, the Sennigrat and Kreuzjoch

cable cars take them urther up to the starting point o the

marathon-like downhill run. On their long descent into the

valley they are accompanied by experienced guides. Ater-

wards, a delicious breakast awaits them at the Hochjoch-

    bahn mountain restaurant.

NovaExklusiv. In the early morning hours, well beore the

frst lits open, tour participants rom Gaschurn are headed

or the Silvretta Montaon ski area on the Versettlabahn cable

car. Taking in the majestic view o snow-covered high alpine

peaks, they descend on their skis on perectly groomed pis-tes. At the Nova Stoba mountain restaurant, the resh-track

skiers are rewarded with a hearty mountain breakast. A

joyous adventure or a limited number o participants.

Gargellen Nidla. A long and legendary track: the Nidla.

An exhilaratingly beautiul deep powder snow slope with an

altitude dierence o 500 metres rom start to fnish. Only

or advanced skiers, who enjoy a smooth ride through deep

snow. Avalanche saety gear and accompaniment by a ski

instructor are mandatory or this o-piste experience.

Montafon, Silvretta ski safari. Starting point o this extra-

ordinary tour, which includes a side trip to the neighbouring

village o Galtr, is Partenen. An average ftness level and

the command o basic skiing techniques are sufcient. An

enjoyable ski saari or the whole amily.

Kleinwalsertal ski safari. A ski day ull o variety, started by

an ascent on touring skis up the Hahnenkpe. It is ollowed

by a long, backcountry downhill run, a transer to Bizau Bre-

genzerwald on the skidoo, a taxi transer to Hochkrumbach, and a short ascent to the Widdersteinhtte mountain hut.

Participants are rewarded with a scenic view on Widderstein

(2,500 m). This Kleinwalsertal round trip requires confdent

    backcountry skiing.

Vermalen Run. This 11 km descent rom Sonnenkop in the

Klostertal valley is a true challenge. Skiers have to cover

1,300 m o altitude dierence rom the start on Glattinggrat

to the fnish down in the valley. With up to 60 per cent slope

angle, the new black piste leading down to the so-called

Braloch is extremely steep, testing even expert skiers.

    Diabolo-Piste. With a rise o 312 metres and up to 70 per

cent slope angle, this black piste in the ski area o Golm

(Tschagguns, Vandans) is invariably the steepest piste in

Vorarlberg. It is the venue o the annual Diabolo touring ski

race. The steep ascent on touring skis is ollowed by a

    giant slalom.

Diedamskopf and Damls-Mellau. Skiing with panoramic

view. Diedamskop in Au-Schoppernau is the highest van-

tage point in Bregenzerwald and starting point o a 10 km

downhill run. Not to be missed: the eye-catching Mittags-

spitze in the Damls-Mellau ski resort. In 2010, Damls and

Mellau were connected via a number o ski-lits to orm thelargest ski resort in Bregenzerwald. With an average snow-

all o 9.3 metres per season, Damls claims to get the

    most snowall in the world.

    SKIINGAT ITS FINEST

Valleys and mountain ranges divide up Vorarlberg

into rather compact and small natural areas, with

ideal conditions or skiers looking or variety. The

high alpine ski resorts (between 1,400 m and 2,400

m altitude) are snow sae throughout the season.

Several vantage points aord splendids view o a

mostly untouched mountain landscape. The scenery

    SKIING DELIGHT

To plainsmen like Jochen and Sandra,

a ski saari is an exciting treat. Today,

    they will explore the Kleinwalsertal

valley. In a single day, they will savour

    the maniold pleasures o alpine

winter sports. The appetizer: a comy

Expectations are high, and so are the

    mountains that present themselves as

    giant snow-covered diamonds.

    My first sled ride, comfortable

    and fast.

Then, the frst course: the ascent

    on Hahnenkpe. Virgin slopes on

    touring skis. Sparkling snow crystals,

a stunning view. A swit downhill ride

    into Schnenbach in Bregenzerwald,

where the skidoos are waiting to take

the skiers to Bizau the intermediate

    course, as it were.

My frst sled r ide, comortable and

    ast, is Sandras enthusiastic com-

ment. I she knew better, would she

miss the romantic appeal o a dog

    sleigh ride?

    Taxi ride to Hochkrumbach. According

to the ski guide, this Bregenzerwald

    village was the highest mountain

rozen Silvrettasee lake on the Vermuntbahn

cable railway and tunnel bus, descent to Galtr,

and on to the Zeinisjoch in a snow cat. Climax

    LITTLE SKI PRINCESS

For ten-year old Laura it is the second winter on skis. Her

parents love winter sports. They put Laura on skis or the

frst time a year ago, much to everybodys enjoyment. Laura

has enrolled in a one-week ski course as she wants to join

her mom and dad racing down real pistes soon. They could

not have chosen a better destination: the Brandnertal valley

is an award-winning amily skiing holiday resort. It oers 55

kilometres o ski runs, mostly easy slopes with an excellent

view. In ski schools, the little ones become amiliar with the

white element in a un and playul way.

Her parents know they can trust that Laura is in good hands.

They are already on their eet to discover the cross-country

ski trails on Bielerhhe in Montaon, the highest trails in all

o Vorarlberg at 2,000 m above sea level. Even getting there

is adventurous. Laura would certainly have appreciated the

ride on the mountain railway and tunnel bus

    CULTURE FOR BREAKFAST

Today, they rose somewhat late. Yesterdays visit to Vor-

arlbergs capital o Bregenz lasted longer than anticipated.

No problem at all or the welcoming host, who serves them

resh coee, bread and tasty regional mountain cheese

with a smile, at a time when most guests are out on the

    ski slopes.

They had had to make a decision. Should they go to the

Hittisau Womens Museum a museum with alternating

exhibitions on culture-historical and socio-political topics

or to Kunsthaus Bregenz? To the retired physician, there

was no way around the sparkling jewel in Bregenz which

had eatured exhibits by such renowned contemporary

artists as Ai Weiwei, Roy Lichtenstein, Damien Hirst or

Joseph Beuys. All o that in a city with less than 30,000inhabitants

On the road to Bregenz, the couple had realised that many

buildings are an unconventional, yet harmonious blend o

traditional and modern styles. Be it a armhouse on a slope,

a village centre or a school building with a clear architectur-

al language. The materials are traditional timber, preerably

rom indigenous orests, glass, steel and concrete.

Werkraum Bregenzerwald is an impressive demonstration

o the art and crat o local carpenters. The chairs, tables

and shelves on display in the depot breathe the exceptional

    fnesse o a century-old crat.

Romantic Christmas markets that are ound all over the

place oer a large variety o hand- and homemade local

produce. Whether in the medieval town centre o Feldkirch,

at the Dornbirn market square, in Bregenz or in the pictur-

esque village o Schwarzenberg, it is hard to resist theresh baked goods. Richard and his wie, too, were quite

taken by the jolly atmosphere around them, strolling

along, stopping at and passing by the lovingly decorated

    market stands.

She sits down next to Karen, whom she has become riends with. Ka-

ren is excited: Just imagine, a couple o days ago I was on the Golm

in the Montaon, together with my mom and dad. We took a r ide on

the Alpine Coaster. Have you been there?

Laura s eyes are wide open, she is taken by Karens report. On a two-

seater toboggan the ride goes downhill on a trail connecting Tschag-

guns-Latschau and Vandans. The route is 2.5 kilometres or 8 minutes

long and includes a number o spectacular turns and spirals and 44

jumps. Laura is on fre, her hear t liter ally starts beating aster. She

    ROCK IT, MAN!

Still dazzled by his tour o the White Ring, Matthias is

taking a rest on Rud-Alpe hut. Hal an hour ago, he met

Hubert Strolz, Olympic ski champion and most amous son

o the neighbouring community o Warth. His stories conju-

re up the vision o powder snow piling up to the roo gutterand o downhill runs in eyeball deep powder. Thats music

to Matthias ears. Eleven metres o snowall ever y year,

picture that! The message even hit the news in Britains

Daily Mail newspaper. Next year, Matthias will come back

to see the miracle with his own eyes.

It need not be added that the place is a paradise or ree-

riders. The alpine schools o Schrcken and Warth oer

guided reeriding tours in the area. A ew years ater the

invention o carving, they present an innovation that is ex-

pected to breathe new lie into alpine skiing. The so-called

rocker skis make turn initiation smooth. They have an

early-rise exible tip that is slightly raised o the ground.

In deep powder, and only there, the skis oat like a sur-

board, which makes or eortless gliding.

It goes without saying that Hubert Strolz knows the Warth

ski resort like the back o his hand. He gives Matthias

a couple o useul hints: You may try Aueneld or Och-

senkop. To get to Aueneld, you go up on the Salober-Jet

chairlit. From the top station its only a short ascent to the

large rocks acing south, and rom there just let it ow.

Alternatively, you may hop on the Salober-Jet and head or

the Ochsenkop going down on run number 4. Only then will

you know what reeriding really is.

o challenging tours, experienced reeriders may try thethree-kilometre long tour-slope into Nenzigasttal. The local

Klostertal ski school oers a variety o courses, including

    reestyle- and snowboard courses.

    uncommon, especially or non-Vorarl-

bergers), like the atmosphere in this

ski hut at the end o the Schlegelkop

    run.

Matthias is carried away by the

    atmosphere: international guests,

    nice ambient music, award-winning

    architectural design. The interior is

sleek and the rooms are ftted with

natural timber rom native fr trees.

Not to orget the ood! By day, the

    stone-baked pizza enjoys cult status

with hungry skiers. In the evening,

che Andreas Schneider and his team

prepare light and tasty Austrian dish-

    es with a creative twist.

    Vorarlbergs ski resorts combine local

    hospitality and zeitgeist. Confdence

    and cordiality are greatly appreciated,

more so than nostalgia. Matthias is

happy to share in all o this. He enjoys

the company o ellow skiers and the

drink the nice waitress has served

him with a riendly smile on her ace.

This is what he understands by the

    telltale Austr ian Gemtlichkeit.

    He eels reinvigorated, looking

orward already to a new skiing day.

    Conversations ocus around new sum-

mits: where to go and have even more

    un in the snow tomorrow?

    7:30 P.M.

    THE SOUND OF WINTER

Its dawning. The winter athletes are

returning to their hotels and guest

houses. Richard and his wie meet at

the hotel. What a fne day theyve both

enjoyed. And yet, they are ready or

more inspiration. Tonight they will go

to the village o Schwarzenberg, home

o the fne arts. In his lietime, poet

Eduard Mrike came here or hiking.

The place was also home to baroque

    painter Angelika Kaumann, who

    grew up in Schwarzenberg. Richard

    has heard o Schwarzenberg beore,

    especially o the annual Schubertiade

Festival o classical music in honour

    o composer Franz Schubert.

    Strolling through the picturesque

village, the couple passes by the

    Angelika-Kaumann-museum and

    numerous examples o local Bre-

    genzerwald timber-ramed houses.

The two are headed or the Hirschen.

    Under the slogan Wlderness, every

Thursday the hotel stages concerts o

some o the fnest yet maybe lesser

known jazz-, blues or new olk music

    bands.

Literature ans go to Hittisau, where,

at Gasthaus Krone, poets and writ-

ers read rom their own works everySaturday aternoon. What a program-

me to suit Richards taste he has

already noted down the day in his

    calendar.

    ROSY RED CHEEKS

Laura could not have anticipated on what joyul note her skiing day

would end. Around 4 p.m., the last skiers have arri ved in the valley.

Ater their fnal swings on the slope, the kids are in or a big surprise:

a toboggan ride! Lauras ski instructor is right at her side, when she

takes o her skis and boots. Ater a short break and another cup o

tea, Laura and her parents go to the Dorbahn cable car.

In the meantime, it has got dark but like in many other ski resorts

in Vorarlberg the toboggan run is oodlit. Beside the station, the

toboggans are or rent. O they go! At a push o the eet, the tobog-

gan moves on its own and they eortlessly coast down into the valley

    toward the shimmering lights.

The air is crisp and the snow swishes ying rom under the

toboggans runners. Shortly beore they cross the fnish line, Laura

overtakes her new riend Karen. Yippie! See you tomorrow, the girls

with the rosy red cheeks call at each other as they part.

    8:00 P.M.

    GAME!

Sandra has been looking orward to

tonight or weeks. She craves tradi-

    tional ood dishes long orgotten,

    newly discovered and prepared with

    a creative, contemporary twist. While

the names sound amiliar, the ood is

    anything but the usual are.

The che is a culinary story teller. His

cooking style, rich in savoury moun-

tain herbs, is inspired by the Walser,

    immigrants rom Switzerland. Old

recipes, most l ikely invented in times

o need, are pleasing to the palate

    nonetheless. What a bliss!

    Jochen and Sandra order venison.

They just love the idea o enjoy ing

organic meat straight rom the woods.

One should have tasted the preparati-

on with cherries and almonds: tender,

sweet and hearty at the same time.

No question, Sandra is going to order

dessert as well. The ruit sorbet with

herbs rom the stone garden is a very

    special treat, mhhh.

Outside, it has started to snow. Insideit is cosy and warm. Jochen suggests

that they should stay a couple o days

longer. Sandra gives him a big smile

    she does not object.

    FEASTING ON

    REGIONAL CUISINE

Vorarlberg dines ... better. Inn keepers

    and restaurant owners in Vorarlberg

are committed to quality across the

board. Whether they oer regional or

    international cuisine, operate a wine

cellar, a traditional inn or gourmet

restaurant, or cater to the in-crowd:

the guest is king. Curious? Check out

www.vorarlberg-isst.at or culin-ary events, gourmet recipes and

    Vorarlbergs top eateries. Order the

    Vorarlberg Genuss- und Erlebnis-

    guide online (German version only).

Vorarlberg is a destination for bon vivants. More often than not, it is plain cooking rather than gourmet cuisine: e.g. a

carefully prepared, nicely garnished roast, served in an authentic, cosy restaurant. Or in a ski hut. Andrew Nussbaumer,

chairman of the professional gastronomy group, knows the intricacies of Vorarlbergs cuisine.

? What is the main ingredient in Vorarlbergs

    gastronomy?

! Especially regional cuisine has a long-standing tradition in

Vorarlberg. Deep green mountain pastures and clean water

rom the Alps make or the outstanding quality o our ood.

The tender meat o the alpine pig and the aromatic moun-

tain cheese are regional specialities known well beyond our

    state borders.

? When it comes to food, how is the winter season in Vor-

    arlberg different from the summer?

! There is a large variety o delicious seasonal dishes in

every season. Gourmets in spring and summer east on

resh fsh and asparagus rom the Lake Constance regi-

on, on wild garlic, tender lettuce and regional herbs. In

autumn and winter, pumpkins, wild mushrooms and gameare in season. Traditional easts at this time o the year

include roast duck and meat platter.

? To many, ski huts are synonymous with partying. It is

being overlooked that they also have a lot to offer when

it comes to culinary pleasures. What is their secret of

    success?

! They seem to please every taste. Whether it is traditional

plain cooking like the amous Kssptzle (cheese nood-

les), Kaiserschmarren (uy pancake) and apple strudel

or gourmet cuisine the culinary range is rom rustic to

refned. Anyone having once experienced the smell, taste

and cosy eel o a Vorarlberg ski hut, will return.
