DISTRICT — There are many groups and organizations doing good work creating policies and procedures to foster positive inclusive experiences for the LGBTQ community (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer) people in sport.

The Temiskaming Shores Minor Hockey Association (TSMHA) is one of them.

“As part of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, the Ontario Hockey Federation, and of course Hockey Canada, the TSMHA wholly supports trans-inclusive hockey in our area,” said TSMHA president James T. Paterson in an email interview.

He said there are two modules being offered by Hockey Can-ada intended to educate our team offi cials on this topic called “Understanding Discrimination based on Gender Identity” and “Gender Expression with a guide to dressing room policy and confi dentiality statement.”

Completion of these inclusivity-based policies is expected to take place by October 1, just in time for the upcoming hockey season.

“For our team offi cials named within a month of or after Oc-tober 1, they will have 30 days to complete both modules,” said Paterson.

This inclusivity training is mandatory for all offi cials and bench staff, which includes coaches, trainers and managers alike.LEGAL DUTY

The changes being adopted by hockey leagues and other sport leagues across Canada are meant to address the mindset of people and the legal ramifi cations of the LGBTQ community and their rights to free and open association in sport.

The law provides that players identifying as LGBTQ can play without discrimination or fear of reprisal.

Paterson says it is important for coaches, trainers and manag-ers to understand how to interact with players on the playing fi eld to ensure a positive sport experience.“The mindset has to extend beyond the rink. A change in how everyone talks to ev-eryone else, regardless of sexual orientation or of location, will be of the utmost benefi t to everyone.”

COBALT (Staff ) – About 110 anglers of all ages headed to favourite fi shing spots on the weekend hoping to land big catches for Big Red’s Fish Der-by.

The annual weekend tour-ney wrapped up August 20 in Cobalt’s Teck Park.

“It’s more of a family thing,” said Vic Legault, secretary-treasurer of the Lions Club of Cobalt and Coleman, which or-ganizes the event.

Entry fees were $15 for adults and $10 for children aged 12 and under.

He said participants typically came from across the Tri-Town area and as far away as Tema-gami, Latchford and Matache-

Anglers can fi sh any lake. Prizes are awarded, to adults and kids, for the largest pike, pickerel or bass.

After the 6 p.m. weigh-in cutoff, live music provided the backdrop as anglers turned out for some food and the awarding of prizes.

Each young angler received a gift bag of goods, Legault said.

And thanks to the generos-ity of its sponsors, he said each adult entrant this year also re-ceived a door prize.

Attendance draws were also held.
