Flooding promptslandslide fears

JOHN [email protected]

McNab-Braeside and Horton were still mopping up early this week after a torrential rainstorm caused major damage last Friday evening.

The state of emergency declared for the Rhoddy’s Bay-Sand Point area of McNab-Brae-side was still in effect Tuesday, as officials feared more land-slides. The order affected an area from Goshen Road to the Ottawa River and Division Street to Sto-rie Road.

In a release, the township explained that the state of emer-gency will remain in place until council and the emergency man-agement team are confident imminent weather patterns and ground instability pose no fur-ther threat to residents, property and municipal facilities.

The Ministry of Natural Resources completed an aerial review of the emergency area Monday.

MNR officials also took soil samples for analysis in order to determine slope stability and determine the possible presence of leda clay, which is susceptible to sliding when soaked.

“Results will be forthcom-ing,” says the McNab-Braeside release. “Please avoid embank-ments. Attempting to view dam-aged areas is dangerous.”

Especially hard hit by ero-sion caused by the flash flooding was the area between 152 Dewar

Drive and 2130 River Road. On Friday, four homes on Dewar Road were evacuated because of landslides and power lines were temporarily removed from some homes.

Services have returned to normal operation, but OPP, County of Renfrew Paramedics and Country of Renfrew Road crews stand ready to assist the township should more extreme weather necessitate emergency measures.

The township has announced that Maple Bend Road is now open to all traffic, but sections of Scheel Drive (McLean Drive through Carmichael Side Road) and Clifford Side Road (Milton Stewart through Millar Road) remain closed to all but local traffic until further notice.

The Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs is conduct-ing an assessment of damage associated with this emergency and met with township council Tuesday.

Ontario Power Generation is assisting the township by reduc-ing water in Chats Lake by 10 centimetres.

While the water levels are well within normal ranges, the added precaution is designed to reduce stress on water-logged embank-ments along the Ottawa River.

The County of Renfrew Health Unit’s drinking water advisory remains in effect for residents affected by flood conditions.

Continued from frontIf they suspect their wells have been compro-

mised, residents, particularly those in Rhoddy’s Bay and Sand Point, are advised to either boil their water or use alternative drinking water sources.

Affected water should not be used for drinking, making infant formula and juices, cooking, mak-ing ice, washing fruits, vegetables or brushing teeth. For these purposes, boiled water or bottled water should be used.

The health unit advises that water should be brought to a rapid rolling boil and boiled for at least one minute.

The township is advising residents affected by the flooding to take photographs of the damage and contact their insurance agents.

Residents are welcome to continue to contact the township CAO for information at 613-623-5756, ext 222. All calls are monitored and will be returned.

HORTON HIT TOOHorton road superintendent Rod Eady saw the

rain storm coming Friday evening and, suspecting the deluge that was to come, sprang into action.

He had road closed and warning signs out before the rain had stopped, said the township’s community emergency management co-ordinator Jim Ferguson. “He did a great job.”

Ferguson said the storm hit some parts of the township harder than others. The rain washed out part of the hill on Humphries Road and eroded a large hole in River Road at the Thomson Road intersection.

There was also damage on Stevenson Road and a number of driveways of homes along the river were also damaged by the heavy runoff.

Ferguson said the fact that traffic was already detoured off River Road because the County is replacing the culvert near the old Storie’s store helped minimize the inconvenience.

The township and county road crews put in a long day Saturday, fixing the washouts and open-ing the closed roads.

McNab-Braeside has been making good use of its website to spread the word about Friday’s flooding.

Staff have been working long hours as the township has published a num-ber of updates and advisories on its

website (www.mcnabbraeside.com) throughout the weekend.

The first notice that a state of emer-gency had been declared at 11:30 p.m. last Friday in the east end of the township and that eight roads in the

township were closed appeared on the website at 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

It was followed by the actual decla-ration, advice on how to make a sand-bag, a drinking water advisory, an after-flood checklist and four updates.

The amount of truck traffic in the Pin-eridge area has prompted concerns about public safety.

Work along Highway 17 in preparation for the extension of four lanes to Scheel Drive has boosted the number of large trucks in the area.

At its July 21 meeting, McNab-Brae-side council discussed complaints by Campbell Drive residents. However, coun-cil decided it wouldn’t make sense to ask for a temporary traffic light at the corner of Highway 17 and Campbell Drive to encourage dump trucks to use the high-way instead of municipal roads when working in the area.

Mayor Mary Campbell reported that Cavanagh Construction has responded after the township received numerous calls about trucks speeding, not stopping properly at stop signs, and leaving clay and debris on Campbell Drive.

Cavanagh representative Clay Angus has spoken to drivers and there have been improvements, the mayor said. “They are adhering to the speed limit and cleaning up the debris.”

She said the trucks are using both sides of Campbell Drive to get back to the Madawaska Bridge, where they are pick-ing up dirt, because they feel it is unsafe to turn left onto the highway. The speed of the highway traffic is so fast, it is safer for the trucks to cross over Campbell Drive than turn onto the highway, she explained.

That continues to result in complaints from residents, Campbell added, noting a stop light is only realistic solution to deter truck traffic from using Campbell Drive. “Mr. Angus estimates the work will go on for at least five months,” she said.

Another concern is damage to munici-pal roads that weren’t built for heavy truck traffic, she added.

Deputy Mayor Elmer Raycroft sug-gested putting in a full stop on Highway 17 would be expensive and cause traffic jams.

Coun. Brad McIlquham suggested it wasn’t worth the effort because it would probably take five or six months to receive approval. As well, slowing up highway traffic could cause its own safety prob-lems, he said.

Working with the contractor to miti-gate problems in a preferable route to go, he added. “They’re trying their hardest.”

“They have been very co-operative,” Campbell agreed.

It’s dangerous to have trucks travel-ling on routes, such White Lake Road, with considerable pedestrian traffic, said Coun. Andy Dunlop, calling it a catastro-phe in waiting.

However, the township can’t keep trucks off its roads, he added.

“I think we can put up with this for a short period of time,” said Raycroft. He cautioned that area residents will have to deal with the impacts of work on the White Lake Road interchange for the next three years.

“Better get use to it,” said Dunlop.

The heavy rains caused considerable damage to the road leading up to the Arnprior Golf Course. Photo by MIKE CLEARY

If there was a silver lining to the di-saster that caused so much damage along the Ottawa River Friday, it was the quick response and co-operation between many different agencies.

The road crews of McNab-Braeside, Horton and the County tackled the prob-lems quickly and worked long hours through a summer weekend to ensure roads were passable by Monday morning.

McNab-Braeside fi refi ghters spent hours helping residents of Rhoddy’s Bay and Sand Point deal with the aftermath of Friday’s deluge and protect themselves from a possible repeat.

Municipal emergency plan offi cials in McNab-Braeside and Horton were on alert and helped co-ordinate the response.

McNab-Braeside staff stayed up late to ensure the state of emergency declara-tion, road closures and the boil-water ad-visory were quickly and well publicized.

OPP, paramedics, OPG, health unit MOE, MNR – you name it, they pitched in to help.

The effort was greatly appreciated.

Up to the challenge Flooding should have been foreseenTo the editor:

Years of uncertainty and fears of impending property fl ooding, loss and damage became a reality for local resi-dents this past Friday July 24.

The ongoing drainage issues at the Golf Course Road and River Road in Sand Point, Braeside fi nally reared its ugly head over the weekend.

A lot of the damage along the River Road – the washouts and landslides – may not have been avoidable.

But here, in the tiny hamlet of Sand Point, a battle with the Township of McNab-Braeside and Renfrew County has been ongoing for over 20 years.

This is one of many battles for com-munity betterment … this battle is regarding the upgrading of culverts and storm drains. And, in light of the storm that passed through on Friday, it is evident that we need to address this issue once and for all.

The problem: there is only one ac-tive 24-inch culvert that goes under the road at River Road and Golf Course Road. This undersized culvert would not even meet today’s road standards for those under a laneway to a single house from a road.

There is one channel or path for wa-ter to travel on the easterly side of the road at the top of the hill … half-way down that Golf Course road this east-erly path is diverted to the other side of the road to another channel that ends in an undersized culvert.

The Golf Course Road has collapsed as it was completely undermined by the fl ow of water Friday night.

It’s a very steep road stretching for half a kilometre. Over the past few years at least 20 new homes have been built in the area above the Golf course Road and along Toner Road.

Of course, the land around them has been graded up and their drain-age systems installed to keep water out of their basements and into the township ditches. This water, however, fi nds its way to the top of the hill on Golf Course Road and heads downhill at high speed towards the River. It hits that half-way diversion point (nobody can understand this design) and heads for that aforementioned small culvert.

The force of water coming down Golf Course Road on Friday evening

was staggering. To make matters worse, the old culvert on the easterly side of the intersection at River Road and Golf Course Road, was closed off.

The west side understandably couldn’t handle the fl ow and blocked up. The force of the water broke through the diversion and came down the east side as well.

The water blew up over the road and the amount so immense that it un-dermined parts of the railway on the other side and, washed out points of the Appleby Road below that.

You can’t stop water … you can, however, divert it. I am not an engineer. I am a builder. Simple maintenance of the ditches/culverts and upgrading of these archaic culverts would have pre-vented this disaster. Declaring a state of emergency in Sand Point is proof we need a solution here.

A pink paper was given to us by the clerk from the town stating not to drink the water. Where is the follow-up? Where is the bottled water that should be supplied to me and my fam-ily not to mention all of the other resi-dents?

I have three sump pumps running constantly in the basement and no one from the Township or County has called or stopped by to assess either of

these water problems. If you declare a state of emergency there has to be some follow-up.

My heart goes out to all of my fel-low neighbours who suffered through all this unnecessary turmoil and to all residents of Rhoddy’s Bay who also suffered unthinkable damage to their properties and personal belongings.

Attitudes have to change from the powers-that-be we have elected. Preventative maintenance should be number one and a preventative pro-active strategy should be adopted by both council and county and it should be implemented immediately.

Listen to the taxpayers and do what is best for us. Simple.

It is interesting to note (for anyone who ventured up the Golf Course Road over the weekend) that two larger cul-verts, washed out from one laneway at the top of the hill, were resting just ahead of this midway diversion point and stuck there on a rock.

Sad to think that none of this would have happened if they were simply used in the right locations at the bot-tom of the hill on both sides of Golf Course Road. Too simple.

To the editor:Just when I think I am sliding into obscurity, someone

gives me a wake-up call.In this case it was Pat Maloney, a talented musician and

pianist who resides in Renfrew, and this is a thank you note to her.

I moved to a small apartment in Ottawa last December after selling my house in Calabogie, but still help out a bit with entertainment at the various nursing homes and hos-pitals in Renfrew and Arnprior.

On June 17, while taking part in the Seniors Star Con-test sponsored by Chartwell Senior’s Housing and Quail

Creek Retirement Home and held at Groves Park Lodge in Renfrew, we met up with Pat Maloney and after listening to some fabulous seniors performing on stage, Pat showed me the music she had written to one of my poems concerning the Renfrew Fair.

She sat and played the piece for me and I must admit I was very pleased with it.

Thank you so much Pat, and hopefully your endeavors will not go unnoticed by the Renfrew Fair Board.

Larry and Dawn Thivierge had a very ‘bright eyed’ moth arrive at their home this week.

With the aid of the Internet, they were able to send me a picture of it.

The moth gets its name honestly. It has one very large blue ‘eye’ on each under wing. Although the moth cannot see with these ‘eyes’, they

give the impression of a much larger and more aggres-sive insect.

Many a bird has been discouraged from making a meal of the moth because of its large blue ‘eyes’.

The moth is a member of the Sphinx moth fam-ily and is so named because of the way the caterpillar holds itself erect much like the Sphinx statue of ancient Egypt.

They are also known as “hawk moths” because of their streamlined shape and rapid wing beat.

Most sphinx moths feed on flower nectar. Some like the Twin-spotted Moth are unable to feed as adults.

Over many generations they have lost the necessity to feed and have, therefore, lost their mouth parts.

This common moth is attracted to outside lights and can often be found on the ground or in the trees close to the lights.

TWO ATTRACTIVE RARE VISITORSI received a letter from Gina Chusroskie and pictures

of two attractive rare visitors that came to her home. The pictures are of a Luna Moth and a Garden Spi-

der.Luna Moths are large silk worn, moths, with a five-

inch wingspan, long flowing tails much like those of Barn Swallows and they are lime green in colour.

They, like the Twin-spotted Moth, have an ‘eye’ on each wing that acts as a deterrent to any would-be bird that might make a meal of the moth.

Luna Moths are attracted to outside lights and may be seen on any warm summer night flying around and around the lights.

Many scientists claim that the moths spend their time flying instead of seeking a mate and this has led to a decline in the population.

Luna Moths do not feed as adults. The Yellow Garden Spider was the star of the book

‘Charlotte’s Web’ and is also a common ‘spook’ on Hal-loween.

This is a large spider. The body is about an inch long and the legs add another two and a half inches to its length.

The yellow and black body pattern is very striking and with the yellow and black legs this spider is quite colourful but can be intimidating.

Yellow Garden Spiders are members of the orb weaver family and as such is easy to recognize by their colour and the shape and pattern of their webs.

The web has an X-shaped, white silk stabilizer attached to the centre of the web.

It looks much like a coiled spring and when a bird or large insect strikes the web, the stabilizer absorbs the shock and keeps the web from being damaged.

This spider does not always stay near the web but will wander into nearby vegetation and hide until an insect is caught in the web.

It then scrambles onto the web, paralyzes its prey with a venomous bite and rolls it in silk for later con-sumption.

Speaking of Nature.

NewsNewsNewsNewsMore funding flows to local municipalities

JOHN [email protected] Street in Renfrew will

be vastly improved over the next year thanks to a federal-provin-cial stimulus grant.

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant joined Ren-frew Mayor Sandi Heins recently for a progress review on the June Street rehabilitation project. The project is one of many that are being worked on this summer with funding from three levels of government.

“Residents of Renfrew ben-efit when political leaders work together,” said Gallant. “The joint federal, provincial and municipal funding to June Street in Renfrew is a good example of working together.”

Gallant said the project is just one example of all levels of gov-ernment “committed to stimu-lating the Ontario economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs for Ontarians, and getting shov-els in the ground sooner.”

The governments of Canada and Ontario will each invest up to $126,666 in the project.

The Town of Renfrew will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $380,000.

The project will improve transportation efficiency and enhance local facilities and ser-vices when the need for econom-ic stimulus is greatest. The fed-eral portion was funded under

the communities component of the Building Canada Fund.

The Communities Component is focused on projects in com-munities with populations of less than 100,000. Projects were selected through an application-based process and, like projects under the Major Infrastructure Component, were evaluated on the extent to which they met environmental, economic and quality of life objectives.

This significantly helps smaller communities address their infrastructure pressures and serves as a complementary instrument to gas tax funding.

This project is one of 289 across the province that is break-ing ground thanks to a federal-provincial-municipal investment of more than $1 billion.

The governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in Ontar-io Communities for the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.

O’BRIEN ROAD GRANTRenfrew has received a num-

ber of grants in the last couple of year, include almost $20 mil-lion toward its new sewer plant.

Another grant, much smaller but potentially almost as signifi-cant, was announced earlier this month.

Renfrew will receive $81,000 from the Ontario govern-

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski has been named the provincial Conserva-tives’ deputy house leader by new leader Tim Hudak.

He has also been re-appointed to the position of energy critic .

“Our Caucus will provide a principled conservative plan and a winning alternative to the failed leadership of the McGuinty Lib-erals,” said Hudak. “I am looking forward to working with John Yakabuski and to expanding our party together as we work to vic-tory in 2011.”

“I am honoured to continue our party’s important work as energy critic and to begin my new responsibilities as deputy house leader, working towards the next election under the direc-tion of our capable new leader, Tim Hudak,” said Yakabuski.

“Ontarians deserve so much more then what they’re getting from Dalton McGuinty’s govern-ment and I believe that our party,

under Tim Hudak’s direction, offers a real alternative.”

“We need innovative ideas grounded in conservative prin-ciples in order to get Ontario moving,” said Hudak.

“Together, united and strong, we can focus on the issues that matter to middle-class families, defeat Dalton McGuinty and the Ontario Liberals, and bring pros-perity to our province.

“The people of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke are for-tunate to have an MPP of the caliber of John Yakabuski rep-resenting them in the Ontario Legislature,” Hudak said.

“As energy critic, John has shown that the McGuinty Lib-erals have no plan for Ontar-io’s energy future and he will continue to fight for Ontario families and businesses because he knows that a stable, afford-able energy supply is the key to Ontario’s future economic pros-perity. “

Hudak names Yakabuskideputy house leader

ment through the Connecting Link program to study ways to improve the O’Brien Road cor-ridor.

The grant indicates the prov-ince recognizes the need to improve traffic flow and safe-ty on Highway 60 as it travels through Renfrew.

The town has been lobbying for major improvements to the route between confusion corner and Highway 17 and this is a promising first step.

FUNDS FOR WHITEWATERMeanwhile, Gallant also

announced federal funding of $195,856 of to assist Whitewa-ter Region Township upgrades at its Haley Water Distribution

System. The funding follows through on a commitment by the federal government to fund new water upgrades in Ontario.

“The Government of Canada recognizes the economic chal-lenges faced by some Ontario municipalities to fund addi-tional costs for upgrading water projects,” said Gallant.

“The Building Canada Fund, Communities Component, addresses some of those finan-cial pressures.”

Under the Building Canada Fund and the Infrastructure Stimulus programs, the govern-ments of Canada and Ontario will each invest up to one third of the net eligible costs in each project. Municipalities will con-

tribute the balance of total eli-gible costs.

The funding compliments nicely with the federal govern-ment’s earlier decision to accel-erate gas tax transfers to munic-ipalities to assist local ratepay-ers, said Gallant. Moving fed-eral funds quickly has placed all municipalities in a stronger financial position to fund their portion of infrastructure con-struction, she added.

“I am delighted that many of our Renfrew County communi-ties have benefited due to the commitment of the Conserva-tive Government,” said Gallant.

“Mayor Don Rathwell and Whitewater Region councillors are to be congratulated.”

There was no shortage of material for reading, and for the imagination, during the 2009 summer reading program at the Admaston-Bromley Public Library.

The Douglas-based library was abuzz with as many as 36 kids per day, for the July 20-24 session that featured the theme of Detective Academy.

Kids ages 4 to 10 made kits with dis-guises, collected ID badges, listened to audio books, created after crafts, played

on computers, and heard readings from Encyclopedia Brown Saves the Day while trying to solve the book’s crime or case of the day.

All activity wasn’t within the library walls, however.

The children also headed outdoors mid-mornings for games, including trea-sure hunting.

“It was overwhelmingly good,” said assistant librarian Jane Wouda.

“So we’re thinking of possibly expand-ing the program.”

Drivers, fans enjoy Ted Powell Race Weekend at Calabogie MotorSports Park

Beachburg’s Nathan Blok gets set to hit the track during the Ted Powell Memorial Race Weekend at Calabogie MotorSports Park July 26. In his first-ever F1600 Formula Ford racing com-petition, the young driver had a podium finish on Sunday, fin-ishing third in his class. Mercury Weekender photos by SHERRY HAAIMA

Six-year-old Anthony McGowan of Ottawa, whose grandfather was racing, spent the weekend learning the call signs and working the pad-dock, helping direct the vehi-cles as they lined up to get on the track.

Janna Wilson, Sophie Giroux and Angele Lanthier of Kana-ta Ford work the company’s clothing booth at the third annual Ted Powell Memorial Race Weekend. The business, which had two garages at the race, is expanding its motors-ports clothing line.

Life in the fast laneSHERRY [email protected]

There was lots of excitement at the third annual Ted Powell Memorial Race Weekend at Cala-bogie MotorSports Park, but per-haps no one was as thrilled to get on the track as Beachburg’s young Nathan Blok, who raced the first Formula 1600 race of his life on Saturday.

Blok followed up a respectable ninth place ranking Saturday with an impressive third place podium finish on Sunday. “I have never been more excited,” said Blok. “Nothing compares to it.”

Highlights of the weekend included an appearance by John Powell, son of Ottawa area racing legend Ted Powell, who waved the green flag to start the GT race.

Motorsport Club of Ottawa’s Craig Lee says the Calabogie facility is a great location for the Ted Powell race and the event has grown over the years.

Once run on just part of the track, a larger bank of qualified marshals and volunteers meant the entire 5.5 kilometre track was in use.

“It’s been excellent. We’re very pleased with the number of spec-tators,” said Lee.

Close to 200 drivers were involved in what is becoming a popular event on the racing cir-cuit. There were several classes, including Formula Libre, F1200, GT and vintage classes.

PRAISE FOR BLOKNathan Blok’s performance

received high praise, said his mom Sandra.

“Everyone was quite pleased. A lot of people in their first race don’t make it past qualifying,” she said.

She and husband Steve are very proud, said Sandra, and Nathan was thrilled with the whole experience.

“He was ecstatic when he finished the race,” said Sandra. “There weren’t enough people around to hug.”

Nathan has been racing go karts since he reached the required age of six. Now, he races as the youngest member of the Mortimer racing team, based in Ottawa, one of the major teams in the sport. Drivers must be 16 years old to participate in racing events.

Among Blok’s teammates are former major-general Lewis MacKenzie and driver Matt White, who finished first in Sat-

urday’s race.Nigel Mortimer, owner of

Mortimer Racing, says Blok per-formed well.

“We’re very pleased,” he says. “His learning curve is very fast and he’s a lovely kid to work with. He goes out and does exact-ly what he was asked to.”

Nathan can benefit from his teammates, too, says Mortimer. “He’s got the benefit of a lot of people with decades of experi-ence and like I said, he listens.”

Nathan’s list of sponsors is impressive, says Mortimer. “Without money, you can’t go anywhere,” he says.

During Sunday’s event, Blok and his teammates spent some time with optometrist Dr. John Granda, learning to test and hone their vision for maximum per-formance on the track. Granda regularly works with sports pro-fessionals like race car drivers and baseball players.

OTHER INTERESTSRacing’s not Nathan’s only

accomplishment. The Fellowes High School student is a junior black belt in karate, is trained in piano and he curls in the fall.

Next up for Nathan is a race in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. He would like to race at Montreal’s upcom-ing Nascar event, dependent on funding.

In terms of mental prepara-tion, Nathan says there is no spe-cific method. ”I just get in and do my job – do what I do best,” he says.

Nathan’s fastest time so far is 200 kilometres per hour. He would love to one day get into Formula 1 racing.

Motorsports can be an excel-lent activity for young people, says Paul Swinwood of Motors-port Club of Ottawa.

“If you want to race – young kids want to have a good time and see how good they are – come out here,” says Paul Swinwood of Motorsport Club of Ottawa.

“Safety marshals are on hand, everyone’s going in the same direction, it’s much safer to test your speed on a controlled track,” he says.

“Calabogie MotorSports Park offers training schools and lap-ping days for those wanting to learn more or try out the track. The atmosphere at the race and in the racing community is sup-portive.

“It’s a nice family, it’s a tight family,” says Swinwood.

English competed in the bench press, and turned in a quality performance in the Master Class 2 for ages 50-59 in the 110-kilogram divi-sion.

English went 2-for-3 on his lifts and broke his own provincial record each time. He lifted over 400 pounds for the first time in a competition.

“I made lifts of 177.5 kg (391 lbs) and 182.5 kg (402 lbs.),” he noted.

Of the 14 lifters competing in all age-and-weight classes, English’s 182.5-kg lift was the third highest, and was also the third highest Wilks total.

Three teams have put themselves in a position to sweep their respective quar-terfinal series in the 2009 Ma-Te-Way Slo Pitch League playoffs.

ProTyre, Zig Zag and Beimers all grabbed quick 2-0 leads in their best-of-five match-ups at the ball yard Monday evening.

PROTYRE vs. AIKENHEAD’SDespite Aikenhead’s number-seven

status, number-two seed ProTyre had to work a bit of overtime before they could rest easy.

After a 19-6 triumph in the curtain raiser, game two went nine innings before ProTyre finally won it. A five-run top-of-the-ninth snapped a 13-13 deadlock, and the tire shop hung on to post an 18-16 triumph.

ProTyre pitcher Neil Lockwood hom-ered in both games, and had five hits in game two. Dave Howard also went deep twice, while Stephane Lapensee and Steve Cunningham added other long shots. Dan Lavallee collected three hits and three runs scored in the opener.

Aikenhead’s chucker Bobby Lavallee,

Derek Scheuneman and Ian Kemp all had round-trippers and four hits in the nightcap.

ZIG ZAG vs. SUBWAYTim Angus clubbed three home runs

and added a four-hit game as Zig Zag opened the playoffs with 17-11 and 25-16 wins over Subway.

Pitcher Mark Smith added two ding-ers, and Kevin Pennock a grand slam dur-ing an 11-run third inning in game two.

Tim Wilson counted eight hits and seven runs scored during the double-header. Pennock collected five hits in the second game, and Smith four.

Jeff Mahusky answered with two deep blasts for Subway, including a grand slam in the second contest. Ben Kelly, Josh Cybulski and Cory Aucoin also homered.

Kelly added four hits in the nightcap and Aucoin three.

Bernie Mahusky and Brett Gilchrist handled Subway mound duties.

BEIMERS vs. OVGTim O’Connor led off both games with

a home run, including game two on the Seeley (baseball) diamond to set a tone for the night.

Beimers went on to post 28-8 and 27-2 wins over Ottawa Valley Glass.

O’Connor, Chad Mullen, Sean Lecuyer and Denver Mullen finished the first game with four hits, including home runs from the bats of Chad Mullen and Lecuyer.

Lecuyer and Chad Mullen also hom-ered and collected four hits in the second contest, while O’Connor’s round-tripper was his first of five hits.

Shannon Manion registered the two wins for Beimers, and yielded just seven hits in game two.

Jon Lowe, Adam Murphy and pitcher Frank Meilleur went deep for Ottawa Val-ley Glass in game one.

The next action in all three series is this Monday at 8 p.m. The winners will join regular season league-leading Bob-Sledz in the second round of the playoffs.

Three teams jump out to 2-0 series leads in Ma-Te-Way playoffs

Talent contest fi naletonight in Pembroke

The finale of Ottawa Valley’s Got Talent Contest is being held tonight (Thursday, July 30) in Pembroke.

The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Riverwalk Amphitheatre. The rain location is Logger’s Pub at Joey’s Only Seafood, 185 Prince St.

The competition has surpassed organizers’ expectations for both participation rates and calibre of talent. Tonight eight talented performers will compete for one of three slots on the big stage at the Pembroke Waterfront Festi-val, Aug. 7 to 9.

From folk, to rock, to opera, the evening plans to be exciting and very entertaining. Special prizes will be won, and an overall Ottawa Valley Talent winner will be announced. “Come out and support local Ottawa Valley tal-ent,” urge organizers.

Local resident Dave Brown is the owner of this new picnic table, drawn for at the recent Valley Bluegrass Festival at John-ston’s farm in Hor-ton. Ticket sales resulted in the raising of $200 for Hospice Renfrew. Howard Dick sup-plied the material and Bill Burgess built the table.

ENJOYING A STEP BACK IN TIME

Ashton resident Earl Moore, who showed his 1916 Chevrolet, receives the random-draw grand prize of an Orlando, Flori-da getaway from Heather Huehl, one of the show orga-nizers. The 50/50 draw went to Nancy Wright of Douglas, while the show also raised $167 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Because of a glitch in a program determining Ontario Scholars at Renfrew Collegiate Insti-tute last month, two students were mistakenly left off the list. There were 30 Ontario Scholars, not 28, at RCI with the addition of Amanda Coulas, above, of Burnstown and Gerry Nichol of Calabogie. Coulas will take psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo in Sep-tember. To achieve Ontario Scholar status, a student must achieve at least 80 per cent in their top six Grade 12 courses Mercury Week-ender photo by JOHN CARTER

New Licensed Child Care CentreNOW OPENSome constructive criticism

Sometimes I can’t believe the things I see on television.

I’m not thinking about sexual things, oddball characters or something that’s sup-posed to be comedy. I’m talking about real life events.

The other day I watched a documentary on a PBS channel about a farm family who grow crops and raise beef cattle.

The elderly man and his 38-year-old son were shown cutting horns off some of their year-olds.

If the cattle didn’t stick their head in the headgate right away, the son went in behind them and pushed them in.

One animal was able to turn around in the squeeze chute as he was pushing it and it came at him.

You never go behind agitated cattle, especial-ly in tight quarters.

Regional Contact is a popular local show we enjoy.

It features mostly creative people – you know, artists, sculp-tures, musicians, and retirees who make odd things.

Many times I’ve rolled my eyes and wondered who actually buys the stuff.

A few weeks ago the show featured a farm-ing couple and their 35-year-old son who are

market gardeners and have a winery on their farm.

They make fruit wines from their garden and orchard produce.

The segment opened with the son, a gradu-ate of Kemptville Agri-cultural College, driv-ing an old David Brown tractor and disking a grassy strip of land near an orchard.

He had the front-end loader bucket up in the air as high as it would go. It was one of those heavy buckets for load-ing and moving soil or manure.

A bucket should nev-er be up in the air when doing work other than loader work. It’s stupid and dangerous.

It should be three or four feet off the ground.

The closing shot of the segment was as dumb as the opening one.

The son was driving the tractor down the laneway and had his lit-tle son – a toddler – sit-ting on his lap.

Did the parents not

teach him how to oper-ate a tractor safely?

Did it not come up in a machinery or tractor course at Kemptville?

In the segment, the son’s mother tells view-ers that her husband lost the farm twice.

Each time he bought another farm and cut down trees and cleared the land.

That’s hard to be-lieve because the family milked cows for many years until they sold their cows and quota some years ago.

The family was in the news last fall be-cause Farm Credit was going to sell the farm.

You want to make a good impression and wear appropriate cloth-ing when you are being featured on a television show.

That’s especially true if you want folks to buy your farm-made wines and produce you sell at area markets.

The older man is shown walking to the wine-making building wearing farm clothes with large red sus-

penders holding up his pants.

He tells viewers he and his wife aren’t wine drinkers, but they de-cided to get into wine-making because of all the surplus crops they have at times. That way it wouldn’t go to waste.

They did a lot of ex-perimenting to get the right taste. Neighbors and friends helped – they were the taste testers.

The man enters the wine-making building and you see vats on the fl oor full of produce and liquids doing what-ever they are supposed to do.

Ferment, I suppose. The man grabs an

oar from the side of the room and starts to churn the stuff in the vat.

Those bright red wide suspenders stick out like a sore thumb.

You’d think he’d put on a clean white jacket or apron.

He doesn’t sanitize the oar. It doesn’t look professional.

Seeing that on televi-sion, would you drink the fruity wine?

At the end of the show the interviewer asked the farmer what he’d like to do if he’s successful with the wine business.

He says he’d like to buy a helicopter and fl y low over the fi elds.

That made me roll my eyes, again.

Snow White, dwarfs missing from farmAnyone seen Snow White and

the Seven Dwarfs? On July 14, Lanark County

OPP were contacted by a resi-dent in the Village of Paken-ham regarding a theft of some cement figurines with signifi-cant sentimental value.

Constable F. Whiting attend-ed the residence and the home-owner, advised that a figure of Snow White and three Dwarfs, described as being 16 inches tall and filled with cement, were on her front veranda and stolen sometime overnight.

The homeowner said she had

owned the figures for 20 years, handpainted them herself and puts them on her porch every summer.

A current detour route around Pakenham because of a culvert replacement project has seen an increase of traffic past the vic-tim’s home and she feels that a passing occupant took a liking to the figures and returned to steal them.

The stolen figures are described as: Snow White figure had blonde pigtails and a blue dress, she held her apron up that contained flowers. One dwarf

was multi-coloured and push-ing a wheelbarrow and another dwarf had a bag over his shoul-der and the word “seeds” was on the bag.

Police are continuing with this investigation, but if you know or are aware of the person(s) responsible for the theft or the whereabouts of the statues, call Lanark County OPP at 613-267-2626 or toll-free at 1-888-310-1122.

You can also call Crime Stop-pers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit information on-line at www.tipsumbit.com.

CT is right around the corner at RVH,and we want to take this opportunity tobring you up to date on what is happeningin our back yard.

The construction crews and equipmentare in full gear, as work proceeds on thelatest hospital addition.

The new CT unit will occupy 1,800 squarefeet of space adjacent to the RVH diagnosticimaging and emergency departments. Thebuilding construction is expected to becomplete in October, and the CT scannerwill be moved in as soon as possible.

An experienced CT technologist has beenhired and RVH diagnostic imaging staff aretraining in the technology, including on-sitetraining offered by The Ottawa Hospital atthe Civic campus. GECanada, the supplier ofthe CT scanner, will also provide specializedtraining once the equipment is installed.

And the excitement has spread beyondthe construction zone and hospitalhallways. Individuals and groupsthroughout the region have come forwardto support the RVH CT fund.

With no available provincial funding, the hospital itself is responsible for the full$3 million cost of construction andequipment purchase.

To date, we have received $500,000 indonations for this purpose. This includesthe $40,000 raised at the 2009 Caring ForTomorrow Golf Tournament, the proceedsfrom the 2008 tournament, and thegenerous gifts received in the Tree ofLights Christmas campaign.

In addition to those major events, theRenfrew district has stepped forward tohost everything from a barn dance to anight at the opera to help bring CTdiagnostics to our community.

Church groups have made the RVH CTfund their charity of choice this year, withthe most recent donations including a$2,500 contribution from the congregationof St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Renfrewand a $1,000 gift from the Mt. St. PatrickCatholic parish.

Service organizations have also beengenerous toward the cause, with groups like

the Eganville Legion making their owndonation of $4,000 and challenging theircomrades throughout the region to join inthe venture.

The business community has also shownits support. Sterling’s No Frills recentlypresented the RVH Foundation with acheque for more than $4,000. CanadianTire adopted the CT theme with a donationof $6,000, and J & J’s Chocolate Sensationsis donating the proceeds and publishingrights to their recently-published cookbook,“Recipes of the Week.”

Even the recent free skin cancer clinicfound a way to contribute to the cause.

Organizer Diana Wakely offeredparticipants the opportunity to makedonations and more than $200 wascollected by the end of the day.

Local families have also made the RVHCT project their charity of choice throughmemorial donations and other personalcontributions.

We thank each and every one of you forthe special contributions you have made toour community hospital over the years, andwe encourage you to spread the word aboutthis important extension to quality healthcare for our community and our hospital’sneed for support.

Construction is well underway to make room for the CT scanner that will enhancediagnostic capabilities at Renfrew Victoria Hospital this fall.

# 3403 MITTSMitts is a spayed two-year-old female with a black

coat with white on the chestShe was found behind the Arnprior Mall, foraging

for food in the garbage dumpsters. Mitts is a very affectionate cat and likes to be the center of attention.

She is quite vocal and will let you know when she is not impressed with something. She tolerates other cats, but prefers her own space. Please consider taking this sweet little girl home.

# 3453 TOBYToby was found tied to a post at the shelter one

morning. He is a neutered fi ve-year-old male. His coat was in

terrible condition, badly matted and fi lthy, and he had to be shaved.

Toby is a large cat, very docile and easygoing, who can be shy at fi rst. He is quiet, affectionate, tolerates the other cats but prefers his own space; he has a favourite bed where he spends most of his time.

He will require a home where he can be groomed regularly, and he is very easy to handle.

Toby likes attention, doesn’t mind being picked up and carried, loves to be petted, and will snuggle.

He is just a big loveable boy who deserves a second chance.

The Shelter is holding its Bottle Drive, any donations would be appreciated.

Supplies the shelter needs: Paper towels, Cat litter (Non clumping and clumping), Canned dog food, Large scratching posts, Window cleaner.

A story in the July 23 Renfrew Mercu-ry Weekender informed readers of Royal Canadian Legion Renfrew Branch 148 putting a museum into their quarters at 30 Raglan St. S.

Sergeant-At-Arms Randy Dowell noted

to Renfrew Town Council July 13 that the museum will be open by Remembrance Day 2010, not this year as reported in the story.

HealthHealthHealthHealthCommunity shows strong support for cancer victim

Many of Sterling Toner’s young friends and relatives were out early Saturday to decorate the hall before the fundraising dance. From left are Kara Howarth, Cassandra Toner (Sterling’s sister), Nolan McGregor, Jacob Prowse, Payton McGregor, Breanna Howarth, Taryn McGregor, Caitlin Robillard, Kayla Robillard, Gabby McNulty (holding Kaden McGregor) and Kyle Broum.

JOHN [email protected]

The Arnprior-Renfrew area has ral-lied to support a young Braeside cancer victim and his family.

Organizers of a fundraising dance Sat-urday and a strawberry tea Monday for six-year-old Sterling Toner overwhelmed organizers.

Arnprior Deputy Mayor Tom Peckett praised the community for its support of Sterling, who is undergoing treatments at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

At Monday’s Arnprior council meet-ing, Peckett said the support shown at a fundraising dance Saturday was wonder-

ful. “The turnout was tremendous; the support was tremendous,” he said.

Peckett said the amount of money col-lected was well beyond the organizers’ expectations.

A tea and dessert fundraiser at the Antrim Truck Stop Monday was also a big success, he said. “The line-up stretched outside the door.”

Collection jars in the area have also been strongly supported.

Peckett said the support from the com-munity, both from Arnprior and the sur-rounding area, shown by people “stepping forward to help out was unbelievable.”

“I thank everyone who worked on this,” he concluded.

BRYDGES, Bobby

In loving memory of Bobby Brydges who passed away July 27, 2001

Eight years have come and goneSince the day you passed away,I can’t believe it’s been this long,It seems like yester-day.I think of you in silence,I often speak your name,I can’t forget the day you left,It never should have came. Each morning when I awake,I know that you are gone,No one knows the heartacheAs I try to carry on.My heart still aches in sadnessAnd secret tears still fl ow,What it meant to lose you, Bobby, No one will ever know.

My thoughts are al-ways with you,Your place no one can fi ll,In life I love you dear-ly,In death I love you still. They say that time heals everything,I know that isn’t so,Because it hurts as much today As it did eight years ago.

Forever in our hearts,Marie and Matthew Brydges
