ANSWERS TO SPOT THE DIFFERENCE: See page 7

Both pictures were taken hand held, with no additional lights. Picture A was taken by the compact digital camera, while Picture B was taken by a phone cam.

This is dramatic difference in terms of the quality between the two. The compact digital camera has the ability to harness more light and to capture more details with its larger lens and sensor. You can even see the condensation on the glass!

The results are smoother colours and details in the shadow areas, whereas the phone cam image fails in low-light. i.e. colours are poor, dull and grainy.

What is education for and why and how should change take place?

The “Master of Arts in Leadership and Educational Change” programme is innovative in design and generative of the critical discourse that is required for leading educational change - dialogue and deliberation about traditions and beliefs in education, how education is experienced as contemporary discourse and new ideas and alternatives for the future.

Ms Reshu Aryal Dhungana, Director of Program and Communications at Ullens Education Foundation, Nepal, highly recommends the “Master of Arts in Leadership and Educational Change” programme to aspiring educational leaders and educators interested in understanding what education is for and how they might create purposeful and meaningful learning experiences for children.

Transforming EducaTionThe Ullens Education Foundation is a seven-year-old non-profit institution registered with Nepal’s Ministry of Education. Since 2013, Ms Reshu has been part on the inaugural learning community of 16 school leaders and senior educators in the “Master of Arts in Leadership and Education Change (MA (LEC))” programme.

In a kingdom where bureaucrats rule and knights have been ousted, a sweet, curious young man, Justin

(voiced by Freddie Highmore), yearns for adventure and to become a knight like his grandfather.

However, his father, Reginald (Alfred Molina), is a firm believer of the need for law and order, and dismisses Justin’s ambition.

Reginald wants Justin to follow in his footsteps, and to become a lawyer, so the well-meaning lawyer steers his son towards becoming a legal eagle. The Road Less TRaveLLed Justin is inspired to follow his

heart after visiting his beloved grandma (voiced by Julie Walters). He says goodbye to his love, Lara, and embarks on his journey to become a knight.

Along the way, he meets the quirky wizard Melquiades (David Williams), the beautiful Talia (Saoirse Ronan), and various other interesting characters.

He is mentored by three monks who teach and test him in the ancient ways of the Knight of Valour.

Even though he may not appear suitable for knighthood, he has to do something when a banished former knight, Sir Heraclio, and his army return to threaten to destroy the kingdom.

Prepare for more adventure and chivalry.

visuaL Richness Justin & the Knights of Valour is not just any animation movie. With 40 different settings and more than 100 film characters, there is vast visual richness to the film, and a duality in portraying both the world of heroes and lawyers, as reflected in Justin and Reginald.

Director Manuel Sicilia drew on his favourite films such as Indiana Jones, Superman, Highlander, Crocodile Dundee, and Top Secret. More than 100 characters, 600 props and 2,000 shots have been generated for the film.

diffeRenT WoRLds “The world of heroes is more colourful and saturated like the classical Technicolor films, such as Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, or The Three Musketeers. For the second world… we were searching for grey tones, a monotonous feeling and a strong symmetry within the shots,” said Sicilia.

“The heroes’ world is somewhere between the Romanic and Gothic periods. It has a mix of ruins and nature which is typical of Romanticism… The lawyers’ world mainly has a Renaissance touch with some Baroque hints,” added Oscar J Vargas, art director and character designer.

Watch this movie about the universal theme of the adventure of being yourself, and doing what you really dream of. W

RichaRd hammond, known for his insight and antics on the popular automobile series “Top Gear”, looks at some of the most intriguing creatures in the world.

He will lead viewers to discover how they’ve evolved to move around, how they’ve adapted to attack as well as to defend themselves, and how they manage to survive in extreme environments.

In this three part series, English broadcaster and co-host of “Top Gear”, Hammond, reveals secret animal abilities from the natural world, and discovers how those same animals have inspired a series of unlikely human inventions at the very frontiers of science.

The series will show him getting buried in a Californian gold mine, diving to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, as well as driving a car powered by geese. Yes, you can expect more fun and hilarity from the adventures and discovery with this bloke.

debuT: “suPeR bodies” The first episode of “Richard Hammond’s Miracles of Nature” debuts on Nov 21, on BBC Knowledge. Titled “Super Bodies”, Hammond’s journey will involve leaping 500m off a South African cliff, and much more.

Tune in to the first episode, as well as subsequent ones, to see

a world of creatures we never really paid close attention to, and how they have impacted and benefitted us.

In this first episode, Hammond also discovers how the Cape vulture has inspired a flying submarine; how a giraffe’s neck can stop a jet pilot losing consciousness; how a woodpecker’s skull can safely protect a light bulb dropped from space; and even how a South American butterfly holds the secret to making any mobile phone waterproof.

Be amazed by these natural wonders of the world, and the corresponding advances in science.

abouT RichaRd hammond Richard Hammond is a broadcaster, writer, and journalist most noted for co-hosting “Top Gear” with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, as well as presenting series 1 to 4 of “Brainiac: Science Abuse”. Hammond also presented “Planet Earth Live” alongside Julia Bradbury.

“Richard Hammond’s Miracles of Nature” premieres in Asia on Nov 21, 9.55pm, on BBC Knowledge (StarHub TV Ch 407). Catch the subsequent episodes on the following Thursdays at 9.55pm.

What is in a name? The pronunciation of “Haim”

rhymes with time. I’ve heard it butchered ever since their first single, “Forever”, was released. That stops henceforth!

Why such an unusual band-name? What does it mean? Why did they choose it? It doesn’t get simpler than that the three girls that make up the band, Este, Danielle and Alana, are sisters and “Haim” is their surname.

High time for Haim

by sonja sTeinmeTz

Haim grew up on ‘70s rock and folk, and their influence can be heard throughout the 11 songs on this disc.

What sets them apart from just paying tribute to a particular style is the influence of modern R&B on their music. Self-professed fans of Destiny’s Child, TLC and rapper Azealia Banks, Haim has a unique point of musical reference that hasn’t been heard before.

Thumbs up to a strong debut!

What got you interested in magic?ning: The magic bug bit me when I was five. It was truly love at first sight when I saw David Copperfield work his illusions on TV!

I begged my Mom to take me to the library, where I borrowed a whole stack of books on magic and intently looked through the pictures and their step-by-step instructions; that’s where I learnt my first few simple magic tricks with ordinary ‘everyday’ objects!Jc: Like any child, I had a fascination for magic. The only exposure to magic at that time was the once or twice yearly magic show on television, as well as the occasional children’s magician at a birthday party or shopping mall.

But, I bought a magic book from the bookshop and also received a magic set for a birthday gift around the same time. This introduced me to the first secrets of magic.

There are two types of people that react differently when magic secrets are exposed. One group is disappointed at how simple the magic methods are at times, and gets disenchanted. The other group is people who are in awe with the deviousness and ingenuity of the methods and trickery that goes on to accomplish a seemingly simple illusion.

I belong to the latter and I suspect most magicians do.

you guys have travelled far and Wide for your Jobs. do you still get excited before each shoW?Jc: We may have adrenaline pumping through our bodies before a show if it is a very important showcase or a mega stunt that we have never done before.

But, most of the time, we are getting into the “zone” and being focused on what we have to do on stage, from a technical point of view, as well as to connect with and entertain the audience. And, of course, have fun in the process.

What are upcoming plans for the both of you?Jc: We will be traveling again in the last two months of 2013 and early 2014 as we headline two luxury cruise liners. I am also just about to release my sixth

book on original illusion designs to the international magic community, and Ning is working on her second book for general public release.

you must have many interesting stories. share some With us?n: At one show early in my career, one of my first costumes was a pair of tight, sexy black vinyl pants that looked great on stage and was comfortable enough. However, in one illusion show that involved me getting in and out of a small locked box, yours truly suddenly heard a loud rip and I felt a cool draft on my ass! It had to rip right at the key moment when I gloriously popped out of the box ... and, of all days, yours truly had chosen to wear red lacy panties!

Luckily, the illusion was the final act in the show and I managed a somewhat dignified backstage exit. There were no complaints; the hoots and cheers from my audience were crazy loud but still, it was an embarrassing but good learning experience. Now, my performing wardrobe consists of black high-quality tough and stretchy skinny jeans… and black underwear.

Who are your magician idols?n: David Copperfield for the

sophistication of his magic and bringing magic to the mainstream entertainment forefront. Princess Tenko became a lucid inspiration when I realised it was actually possible for an Asian woman to hold her own.

And JC for bringing Singapore magic to the international stage.

do you try to decipher other tricks by felloW magicians?Jc: On the contrary, we watch a magic show as a layman to try to experience the wonder and astonishment as a “normal” person would. As professionals in our field we, generally, understand the methodology of most acts.

We are rarely surprised anymore but when we are, it is special. And, we don’t want to know how it is done.

What Would you like to say to singaporeans?n: Look beyond our little red dot. Experience the world if you can and appreciate what we have, yet do not blindly accept what is given to you.Jc: Dare to be different, not for the sake of being different but because you can contribute to the world, in your own unique world, in something that you have passion for. The lasT day of FIDe Fashion Weeks took place on Oct 19 with local designers Frederick Lee as well as blog shop owners Love, Bonito showcasing their latest works as well as collaborations.

Nicknamed “Singapore Day”, our countrymen did us proud in the final closing shows of the FIDe Fashion Weeks.

Frederick Lee’s show surprised us with the opening music including the famous “I see dead people” quote from the movie The Sixth Sense, before Emily Hwang – socialite and owner of the boutique MCM – opened his show flanked by two topless male “centaurs”.

dark shadoWsHis dark show comprised mainly black with rich billowing fabrics and thigh-high boots. The theme seemed to be a mash-up, drawing inspirations from the ballet piece The Black Swan, with Alfred Hitchcock-esque The Birds meets

burlesque. The pieces were darkly sexy yet couture at the same time.

The models looked dressed to kill, literally, with one of the jackets with long-nailed embellishments. They kept almost an angry pace with the music as they walked, no, marched, down the runway with purpose and fashion fierceness.

closing the shoW The closing piece was the piece de resistance, featuring a lanky blonde model against the contrast of the skimming black-panelled gown, with golden antlers and a cape of darkly angelic wings.

All in all, Frederick Lee’s beautifully-themed avant-garde show kept us wanting more.

Some of our fondest memories involve visiting the coffeeshop or hawker centre with our parents, when we were allowed to have our order of cheap western food such as pork cutlet, chicken chop and fish and chips.

Contemporary additions to the hawker stall Western food scene are chains such as Botak Jones and Astons Specialities, which have raised the bar.

Here are a few places you can take the family to this weekend.

There have been so many cupcake stores, bakeries and cake stores popping up lately, we’ve been putting on

mid-day munchies or even as gifts to others. Here are a few stores we liked.

arTisan Boulangerie co.Also known colloquially as ABC, this bakery takes artisan to the next level with their slew of handmade breads, vienoisseries and pastries. Eran Mayer, the baker, who originates from France, tells us that his staff works in 24-hour shifts to ensure that the goods are always fresh.

We loved the plain croissants and the rustic, fresh baguettes. If you’d like to have a good lemon or caramel tart, do pop in for a treat. Drawing upon the chef’s childhood in Israel, the bakery also sells challah – a type of Jewish bread.

Our favourite part of this bakery? You get to watch the croissants rise in the oven from the large glass window at their Killiney Road outlet. They recently opened two more outlets in Great World City and Metropolis, and another at Asia Square.118 Killiney Road, #01-01, Singapore 239555. Tel: 6444 8130

One Of the best American barbecues we’ve tasted in a long time is definitely Smokey’s BBQ. All its meats are smoked in-house, for that full-bodied flavour.

Smokey’s uses the traditional American method of smoking wooden chips to smoke and slow-roast its selections at very low temperatures for up to 20 hours, resulting in a smoked flavour unique to Smokey’s.

Apart from that, its wide al fresco space features Red Dot brewery beer on tap as well as a selection of cocktails and imported beers.

Meat, Meat and More MeatIf you’re a meat-lover, you’ll love Smokey’s. The array of meat varies from a tender beef brisket to pulled pork, to St Louis Spare Ribs.

We especially love the St Louis Spare Ribs ($48 for a full slab, $25 for regular). The meat on the ribs

is so soft it falls apart with the touch of a fork. Smothered with their homemade barbecue sauce and accompanied with a side of fries... Mmm!

We also liked the Buffalo Wings ($10 for six, $18 for 12 and $25 for 18) covered in their homemade hot sauce with a side of in-house blue cheese dip. Psst: Every Wednesday, happy hour goes on all night and the wings go for a dollar each!

Also try their Hush Puppies ($6) – chunks of deep fried corn bread with tartar sauce.

Surf & turfSmokey’s also offers an array of Southern comfort food such as Southern Fried Smoked Fish ($17), a tender white fish fillet, smoked, coated in cornmeal and deep fried. Also try their Smoked Venison Chilli Nachos ($16). The shredded venison is tender and juicy.

With good booze and good meat, Smokey’s is a good place to hang out with the family.

PreviOusly, there was a Japanese-Italian restaurant known as La Luna Rossa Osteria. Now, newly-revamped as Arossa Wine & Grill, it keeps the same style of cuisine, but has further increased its wine selection to over 120 New and Old World labels.

Chef Chiaki Watanabe – the same chef who helmed La Luna Rossa Osteria - takes over the kitchen at Arossa Wine & Grill. They thus serve fine Western food with Japanese touches and precision.

refreShing StartThe starters at Arossa are kept light and palate-cleansing, such as the Buffalo Mozzarella Caprese with Sicilian Tomato and Basil Salad ($20), and the Tuna & Avocado Tartare with Wasabi & Herb Aioli ($26).

The restaurant also offers freshly-shucked oysters in champagne vinegar ($48 for six, $90 for 12).

Hot starters such as Fried Calamari with spicy garlic aioli ($18) and the Soup of The Day ($12) are also available. Each course can also be paired with wine, should it please you. Simply ask the manager on duty for assistance.

MainS to ShareWe loved the Seafood Platter ($88 for two people) with two large King prawns, Hokkaido scallops and barramundi with Ravigote sauce. The beautiful platter had marks of the grill for that delicious smoky taste.

Meat lovers would enjoy the 100 per cent Grain Fed Australian Ribeye ($40) and the 100 per cent Corn-Fed Spanish Iberian Pork Loin ($35). There are no sides to the meat dishes, just a choice of sauce selections that ranges from red wine to gorgonzola, with just a pat of sea salt to allow the full taste of the meat to really shine through.

Arossa Wine & Grill also carries simple desserts such as Chocolate Fondant ($16) and Tiramisu ($14), for a sweet and rich end to the meal.

Bak kwa Mac & Cheese? Who would have thought that would be a good combination?

Chef Adrian Ling of Pidgin Kitchen and Bar thinks so. And he’s right. What we thought was a dubious combination turned out to be flavourful, and that can be said about most of the items on the menu in Pidgin.

Blending familiar local products with modern European cooking, Pidgin Kitchen and Bar serves deliciously familiar yet foreign dishes.

LocaL with a twiStTake Pidgin’s appetisers for example. The Chicken Rice Arancini ($8) – a deep-fried chicken rice ball with a scamoza cheese centre accompanied with a sweet garlic chilli jam dip – is comforting, fragrant and chewy. It is great when paired with beer.

We also loved Pidgin’s Crab Otak Croquettes ($12). The shredded crab otak encased in a golden brown shell with the chye poh remoulade makes for a moreish dish reminiscent of Thai fishcakes.

fuSion MainSTheir mains such as the aforementioned Bak Kwa Mac & Cheese ($20) and the Lobster Wanton Capellini ($26) – which comes in a darling ceramic bowl, and served with chopsticks – are great for sharing. Both the Bak Kwa Mac & Cheese and the Lobster Wanton Capellini are great for taking pictures of, to be posted on Instagram or other social media.

Desserts will not disappoint, with their take on the quintessential kaya toast with a Kaya Bread & Butter Pudding ($15) with a side of houjicha milk tea ice cream in an enamel mug, as well as their Bandung Panna Cotta ($12).

Chocolate lovers would like their version of the Milo Dinosaur Version 2.1 ($15) an updated dish from the Pamplemousse days with a rich chocolate slab accompanied with Milo ice cream.

Most human conflict results from differing assumptions by the two parties.

When husbands and wives engage one another in angry combat they often feel hurt, rejected, insulted and assaulted by the other person.

But when these battles are analysed objectively, we often see that neither side really meant to wound the other. The pain resulted not from intentional infliction of emotional harm but from the natural consequences of differing assumptions.

For example, a man might assume that saturday is his day to golf or watch a game on television because he worked his fingers to the bone all week and he deserves a day off – and who could blame him?

But his wife might justifiably assume he would take the kids off her hands for a few hours because she'd been wiping runny noses and changing diapers all week long. she deserved a break today

and she expected him to give it to her – again, a pretty reasonable assumption.

it's when these unique perspectives collide, about 8am on saturday morning, that the sparks fly.

How can we avoid the stresses of differing assumptions at home? Well, by making sure that our partners get no unpleasant surprises.

We can cope with anything if we see it coming in time.

BEAUTY IN BRIEF

Scientifically termed androgenetic alopecia, the problem of hair loss can be found in men of all ages

starting from the age of 20. About 50 per cent of men suffer

from hair loss when they reach the age of 50 and above. Dr Adolf E Klenk invented the Alpecin shampoo based on his research and development of the world’s first baldness calculator that predicts the age that men will start to bald.

What cauSeS hair LoSSContrary to the popular belief that hair loss is linked to the lack of virility, male pattern hair loss is actually caused by too much testosterone.

Dr Klenk, who is with the Dr Kurt Wolff Company as the head of Research & Development,

explains, “It depends on individuals’ genetic composition. For example a young man aged 18 to 20 might experience a huge shift of hereditary hair loss.”

He also found the prevention for it – caffeine.

debunking the MythS“We selected caffeine because we know that caffeine is a very small molecule that can penetrate very easily. It has previously been used in some types of cosmetics as a promising substance, for example to reduce cellulite,” says Dr Klenk.

“Caffeine can prevent hair loss because it is a very potent energy enhancer and can trigger biological active components which can control the growth period of the hair root,” he says of his discovery.

He also tells us that the belief

that certain foods can cause hair loss is false.

“In general, there is no specific food that causes hair loss, but we talk about moderation in everything. If you are on a strong reduction diet like a vegan diet, lack of energy within the body and hair loss will occur,” he says.

“It is wise to have a well-balanced diet. Vegan diets don’t usually have a good balance of nutrients. For example, some diets have a lack of zinc and vitamin B which is largely found in meats,” he advises.

Alpecin shampoo is a caffeine-based shampoo meant to help prevent hair-loss. Those with a history of baldness in the family can start using it as soon as they hit puberty, for the full effect. Alpecin shampoo is available in stores. W

Capture the night’s vibrancy

By Guinevere Sofer

When the action happenS at niGht, the type of camera can help you capture all the excitement. here are a feW tipS

From Halloween parades to clubbing with friends, many of these lifestyle activities and events that we attend occur at night.

Mobile phone cameras, although convenient, are terrible at capturing low-light photos. The images are usually very grainy and dark, and the colours are typically distorted.

Fortunately, many compact cameras, just as portable as mobile phones, are built to handle these low-light conditions with their larger sensors and lenses. Here are a few great examples of what you can get with the right equipment.

A. USE THE COLOURS OF THE NIGHT TO ADD DRAMA Sometimes it’s best not to use the flash. In many popular areas, the artificial lights are enough to add drama.

Your compact digital camera gives you the ability to increase the exposure to allow more light in, and to capture more of the subtle tones and halo effects from the artificial lights.

B. ZOOM IN TO REDUCE THE DARKNESSDon’t be afraid to zoom in to the action and make all the details come alive – with a good compact digital camera. It can capture fast moving objects better and sharper than phone cameras.

C. FILL IN THE LIGHTWith flash power control, it’s easy to adjust the right amount of light needed. In the example above, the front fill-in flash is balanced with the ambient light, creating an overall, well-lit, vibrant photo!

Most phone cameras don’t have these controls and will generally blast the subject’s face with full-on power.

D. ACTION AND MOTIONMotion blurs and light streaks add unexpected excitement into nightlife images. By setting a slower shutter speed, let the moving objects in your photo create action.

A good compact digital camera will allow you to have slower shutter speeds to capture motion, while its auto-stabilisation helps to prevent shaking.

Why don’t you try it out ?

Typically, when you say “board games”, the classics like Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, or even Risk

come to mind. But it’s amazing how complex and sophisticated board games have developed into since those days of my childhood.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF GAMEOne day, I joined my friend and a few of their friends for a day full of board games! One game in particular amused me a lot. It’s called “A La Carte”.

What’s so cool about it is the

fact that you have a real made-of-actual-metal frying pan that’s about the size of a hand, and it even has an accompanying cardboard stove for cooking, and a cardboard spatula. So cool!

The objective of the game is to become a 3-star Michelin chef by preparing three perfect dishes (or by winning the most points by cooking as many dishes as possible).

UNpREDICTABLE VARIABLESYou’re supposed to take one recipe and put it in your little frying pan.

“another Game that’S

quite fun WaS Some

Space Game. at the Start

of each round, you

have to quickly Build

your oWn SpaceShip. ”

And, when it’s your turn, you have to do three actions, where you can decide to either roll the dice (to adjust the stove), or attempt to add some of the ingredients to your stove.

Here’s where it gets challenging. You can shake the ingredient shakers only once. Sometimes nothing will come out, or sometimes too much of the same ingredient comes out (which can spoil your dish), or a “salt” crystal will come out (thus ruining your chance at getting the perfect dish and that Michelin star).

FROM CUTE TO FUTURISTICOnce you’re done with the dish (i.e. you’ve got the right amount of ingredients, and the stove is at the right number), you can take it out and flip the recipe over to reveal the dish. It’s pretty fun!

Another game that’s quite fun was some space game. At the start of each round, you have to quickly build your own spaceship. What I love about this game are the astronaut characters!

For the fun of it, I decided to make my own astronaut platoon. “FALL IN!!!!!” I got too amused by the astronauts that I forgot to take photos of the rest of the game. Haha!

Basically, at every round, there will be a scenario card where you can either get money, or experience damage to your ship. Especially if your spaceship wasn’t well-built, it’ll be more susceptible to damage, thus losing your cute little astronauts or precious cargo.

It’s really amazing how much board games have evolved since my childhood. They’re more complex, and definitely a whole lot of fun. I look forward to the next one! W

In this photo spread by graphic designer and photographer Kevin Paul, we bring you the art in the

sights and architecture of Berlin, in Germany.

A city rich in history, and most famous for the Berlin Wall which divided East and West Germany during the Communist era, Berlin has a number of different interesting facets to its character.

Here, we give you a glimpse into some of them.

BERLINbeautythis week, we present

to you scenes oF the historic city oF berlin in germany

Hackesche Hoefe: Once ubiquitous in Berlin, courtyards such as the Hackesche Hoefe are now a rarity. The elaborate jugendstil decorations make this series of courtyards a popular attraction.

Checkpoint Charlie: Formerly a point of entry and exit between East and West Germans and even a point of tension between the Russians and Americans, where tanks assembled on the streets. Now, it is a must-visit tourist attraction.

A list of the dead in one of the many Berlin Wall museums near Checkpoint Charlie is a sombre reminder of the history and events that have taken place here.

Writing on the Wall: A text on German and European unity, on display inside a Berlin Wall museum.

The façade of the French Cathedral or Franzoesischer Dom, with people relaxing on its steps.

Horse carriage rides are available for tourists.

The Brandenburger Tor or Brandenburg Gate. A famous landmark in Berlin, it was originally part of a wall surrounding Berlin and was the

main entrance to the city. It is the only gate that remains of this former city wall.

The front view of the Reichstag Building – first open in 1894 and restored in 1999. It houses the parliament.

Huge graffiti in Schlesische Strasse, East Berlin.

Bills and posters line the walls of these Berlin buildings, advertising upcoming events and concerts.
