It was about a struggling family that had just found out they were about to receive a foreclosure on their family home. Realizing what was about to happen, they began cleaning out the basement in their home. As they went about packing the home that had been in the family since at least the 1950’s, they stum- bled upon what has come to be known as the Holy Grail of comic books. They found a copy of an Action Comics No. 1, the first in which Superman ever appeared. "The bank, which was ready to foreclose," said Vincent Zurzolo, co-owner of ComicConnect.com and Metropolis Comics and Collectibles in New York. "Literally, this family was in tears. The family home was going to be lost and they're devastated. They can't figure out a way out of this. They start packing things up. They go into the basement and start sifting through boxes – trying to find packing boxes – and they stumble on eight or nine comic books." Most of the comic books in the box were worth between $10 and $30 but one – dated June 1938 and depicting the Man of Steel lifting a car above his head – was extremely rare. That issue, which original- ly sold for 10 cents, is considered to have ushered in the age of the superhero. "It's a tremendous piece of American pop culture history," Zurzolo said. The couple learned online that ComicConnect.com had brokered the record-breaking sales of Action No.1 copies for $1 million in Feb- ruary and then $1.5 million one month later. "You couldn't have asked for a happier ending," Zurzolo said. "Superman saved the day." It’s been said that the greatness of a joyful experience is measured by the distance between the before and the after. Before their joy, this family faced financial hardship and foreclosure. Afterward, all of their troubles seemed over. They went from foreclosure to great fortune. The message of the Advent season represents an even greater joy. For before our joy we were es- tranged from God and condemned. But the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in the man- ger promised to change our fortune forever. Jesus came into the world to exchange His riches for our poverty, and its effect was the most dramatic swing of fortune imaginable. This makes the "good news of great joy," spoken of by the angels on the night of Jesus' birth, the greatest of all joys. (Luke 2:10) It is true that the comic told of a man of steel who saved this one family, but thanks be to God we have been given a book that tells of a Man of salvation who came to save the world. I pray that each of us takes the time to find Him for ourselves and let this old story bring a new happy ending to our lives. God bless your hearts, Pastor Frederick Sampson

From The Pastor’s Pen………

Advent – Jesus is Our Superman

Greetings Church,

As we enter into this new Advent season my thoughts have drifted to a story I read awhile back. It was about a struggling family that had just found out they were about to receive a foreclosure on their family home. Realizing what was about to happen, they began cleaning out the basement in their home. As they went about packing the home that had been in the family since at least the 1950’s, they stum-bled upon what has come to be known as the Holy Grail of comic books.

They go into the basement and start sifting through boxes – trying to find packing boxes – and they stumble on eight or nine comic books."

Most of the comic books in the box were worth between $10 and $30 but one – dated June 1938 and depicting the Man of Steel lifting a car above his head – was extremely rare. That issue, which original-ly sold for 10 cents, is considered to have ushered in the age of the superhero.

"It's a tremendous piece of American pop culture history," Zurzolo said. The couple learned online that ComicConnect.com had brokered the record-breaking sales of Action No.1 copies for $1 million in Feb-ruary and then $1.5 million one month later. "You couldn't have asked for a happier ending," Zurzolo said. "Superman saved the day."

It’s been said that the greatness of a joyful experience is measured by the distance between the before and the after. Before their joy, this family faced financial hardship and foreclosure. Afterward, all of their troubles seemed over. They went from foreclosure to great fortune.

The message of the Advent season represents an even greater joy. For before our joy we were es-tranged from God and condemned. But the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in the man-ger promised to change our fortune forever. Jesus came into the world to exchange His riches for our poverty, and its effect was the most dramatic swing of fortune imaginable. This makes the "good news of great joy," spoken of by the angels on the night of Jesus' birth, the greatest of all joys. (Luke 2:10)

It is true that the comic told of a man of steel who saved this one family, but thanks be to God we have been given a book that tells of a Man of salvation who came to save the world. I pray that each of us takes the time to find Him for ourselves and let this old story bring a new happy ending to our lives.

God bless your hearts,

Pastor Frederick Sampson

Sunday, January 13, 2019 – 3:00 PM Metropolitan United Methodist Church; 8000 Woodward Avenue; Detroit, MI

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed, talked, and demonstrated to build a “World house.”

This is the great new problem of mankind. We have inherited a big house, a great ‘World house’ in which we have to live together – black and white, Easterners and West-erners, Gentiles and Jews, Catholics and Protestants, Moslem and Hindu, a family unduly separated in ideas, culture, and interests who, because we can never again live without each other, must learn, somehow, in this one big world, to live with each other.” (MLK, 1964)

The celebration features a dramatic presentation of Rev. King’s “A Letter from A Birmingham Jail,” Rev. King’s favorite hymns, and special music.

Sunday mornings. If you would like to become involved

with our children’s ministry, please contact Teresa.

Ladies: what opportunities do you wish the church offered for you to be a part of making a difference in the surrounding community? The world? Maybe even just within our church? Has God put something on your heart to do but you aren't sure how to proceed?

Wherever you are in the road of life, it's important that we support one another in discovering, developing, and carrying out God's will for us in the world. What can we do in our shared love of Christ?

Let's come together on Wednesday, December 12 at 6pm for a potluck and discussion of what we all might have to offer in God's service.

A sign-up sheet will be in the library during coffee hour.
