    Surviving theHoliday Season

By Brian Rosso, R.D.During the holiday season, the

average person experiences increasedstress and gains about five pounds.

This weight gain and stress can beminimized by following thesuggestions listed below.

Exercise on a regular basis. Peoplewho schedule time to exercise aremore successful at keeping the extrapounds off and feel better overall.

Avoid overeating your holidayfavorites! Eat a healthy meal beforegoing to a party. Drink plenty of water, decaffeinated tea or decaffeinatedcoffee. Not only will the liquidshydrate you, but they will also fill yourstomach and decrease your chancesof overeating. Enjoy your favoriteholiday foods, but eat them off asmall plate.

Keep your stress to a minimum overthe holidays. Get plenty of sleep, atleast eight hours a night. Socializewith family and friends. Eatwell-balanced meals. Do not forgetbreakfast—it is the most importantmeal of the day.

    Happy Holidays!
