Prayer Marathon - Bishop da Cuhna Wants YOU I am very pleased that Pope Francis last week called for a global prayer marathon for the upcoming month of May to pray for an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization announced the initiative on Wednesday, April 21. The initiative will involve all shrines of the world in a special way, so that they might encourage the faithful, families, and communities to recite the Rosary to pray for an end to the pandemic,” said the Pontifical Council in its announcement. Each day in May, Vatican online media platforms will broadcast recitation of the Rosary at 12 noon EDT from various shrines taking part in the initiative. Pope Francis will open the Marian month of prayer on May 1 and will also close the i n i t i a t i v e o n M a y 3 1 . ( S e e h t t p s : / /www.ca tho l i cnews . com/pope -ca l l s - f o r-monthlong-global-prayer-marathon-for-end-of-pandemic/ for details) I want to encourage all of our faithful people to take part in this prayer marathon, and I am asking your help to spread the word. Persons can participate by reciting the Rosary at the 12-noon hour (perhaps along with the Vatican broadcast), or at any other time in the day as one’s schedule permits. (SJE will participate at our regular daily scheduled Rosary times.) The month of May presents a significant opportunity for us to urge our people to turn in prayer to Mary, our Blessed Mother, asking for her intercession to help bring an end to the suffering that so many have been forced to bear in the grips of this pandemic over the past 14 months. I am grateful for your assistance in this. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Bishop da Cunha

Daily Rosary Ministry Each morning a small group of parishioners quietly (sometimes quietly) meets at St. John’s to pray the Daily Rosary together, broadcast it over the livestream. Praying the Rosary each day brings us closer to Our Mother Mary and centers our intentions, brings focus to thoughts and words, brings our requests and intercessions before Our Mother and before her Angels and Saints. The Rosary is a very powerful repetitive prayer that can bring Peace, Comfort and Hope into our daily lives. Join us in person or on the live stream (we have found people from all over

the world join with us)! We often find parishioners and friends who join with us at special times in their lives seeking the Blessings and Graces our Mother can bestow upon us. Monday thru Thursday mornings at 6:50 am, Friday and Saturdays at 7:30 am., in person or through the livestream, you are always welcome at St. John’s Daily Rosary. Too early? Our Monday - Thursday Rosary is available on our webpage along with the archived Masses so you can pray with us at your convenience. Join us!

Bake Sale - Reward Yourself for Voting! The St John’s Women’s Guild will be sponsoring a bake sale on Tuesday May 18 (town voting day) from 8 am until noon or when supplies run out. We are inviting anyone to VOLUNTEER to bake - you do not need to be a member. The money raised all goes to the scholarship fund for high school seniors. Please drop off your individually wrapped items between 8 and 10 at the bake table outside the welcome center. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Bobbie Dwyer

There Will be BURGERS! MARK THE DATE! The Father Tom Annual Cookout is scheduled for July 18th this Year!

Congratulations to Father David Frederici! Please join in congratulating and praying for our former Pastor, Father David, as he accepts Bishop da Cunha's appointment as Vicar of Pastoral Services for the Diocese of Fall River. In this role, in addition to his duties as Pastor of St. Mary's in South Dartmouth, Father David will oversee several ministries, including Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, Campus Ministry and Family Ministry. He will also become a member of the Bishop's cabinet of advisors, and his role will include memberships on several boards and councils throughout the Diocese. Please take a moment and pray for Father David as he takes on these additional responsibilities for our Diocese.

Responsorial Psalm: I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. I will fulfill my vows before those who fear the LORD. The lowly shall eat their fill;they who seek the LORD shall praise him: “May your hearts live forever!”R. I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD;all the families of the nations shall bow down before him.R. I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. To him alone shall bow down all who sleep in the earth;before him shall bend all who go down into the dust. R. I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. And to him my soul shall live; my descendants shall serve him.Let the coming generation be told of the LORD that they may proclaim to a people yet to be born the justice he has shown.R. I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people.A reading from the First Letter of St. John:

1 John 3:18-24Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. Now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God and receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And his commandment is this:we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit he gave us.The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God Gospel Acclamation Cantor, then All repeat: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord.Whoever remains in me will bear much fruit.R. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Lord be with you: All: And with your spiritA reading from the Holy Gospel according to LukeAll: Glory to you, O Lord

John 15:1-8 Jesus said to his disciples:“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you

NOTE: Please take this home with you. Thank you! Opening: Three Days

1.Three days our world was broken; the Lord of life lay dead.“Take up your cross,” he told us who followed where he led.Would we now hang in torment with thieves on ev’ry side,Our Passover shattered, our hope crucified?Three days we hid in silence, in bitter fear and grief.Three days we clung together where he had washed our feet.

2.Three days-and on the third day, the women came at dawn. His tomb, they said, was empty, his broken body gone.Who could believe their story? The dead do not arise,Yet he walks among us, and with our own eyesWe’ve seen him at this table; we’ve share his bread and wine.Hearts burning bright within us, we’ve seen his glory shine.

3.Three days our world was broken and in an instant healed,God’s covenant of mercy in mystery revealed. Two thousand years are one day in God’s eternal sight,And yesterday’s sorrows are this day’s delight.Though still Christ’s body suffers, pierced daily by the sword, Yet death has no dominion: the risen Christ is Lord!Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace to people of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, Heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.Lord, Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord, God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father, Amen.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 9:26-31

When Saul arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. He moved about freely with them in Jerusalem, and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord. He also spoke and debated with the Hellenists, but they tried to kill him. And when the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on his way to Tarsus. The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers. The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God

Seasons of Hope Bereavement to Begin Again “No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.”~ C.S. Lewis “If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together, keep me in your heart. I’ll stay there forever.” ~ A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." ~ Matthew 5:4

There is no timetable on grief. There will never come a day when you will be "over it." Our Seasons of Hope Bereavement Group offers people an opportunity to work through their pain with a Scripture-based program held in a safe environment and designed to help people work through their loss without losing or rediscovering their Faith. Our group is open to anyone, Catholic or not, and is free of charge. Your level of participation is entirely up to you. We will be starting again on Thursday, May 20 at 10 AM in the Welcome Center and will run for 6 consecutive weeks. COVID-19 protocols will be enforced, with masks worn and at least 6 feet distance between participants. If you have attended other Seasons and would like to attend again, welcome back! If you want to come and check it out, welcome as well! Any questions, reach out to John Brennan at the Welcome Center.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE - May 2, 2021 5th Sunday of Easter

“Spiraling out of control,” is a phrase that can easily describe the current display of human existence. In addition to the violence, unrest, uneasiness and turmoil that are common elements of our daily news, other essential pieces are misplaced or missing. Many lack an objective center around which to order and structure their lives or a clear set of definable goals or mores to act as guideposts and life directives. It appears that “feelings” have become a “new god” and traditional structures and ideals set aside. It is almost as if history only shows that we got this whole thing wrong and many are determined to finally set things right. The real truth, however, is that while wrongs and errors are certainly a part of our often-checkered past, it is hardly the case that all was wrong. It is not our task to rewrite the history of our lives, but to learn from mistakes that were made, and preserve the perennial wisdom at the root of our successes. Learning is an essential part of being human. The question becomes, however, from whom do we learn? Some have such a hard time placing God in that position, but that is precisely where God needs to be. God is the Master Teacher from whom all of humanity learns and gets its cues. It is in and through this relationship with the Gardener of Life that we are fashioned and pruned into the people we are intended to be and can be. It is only in God that we are able to find our best selves. Sadly, many think that religion too, as well as history in general, has also gotten all this wrong. Yet, our resurrection faith tells us differently. We are reminded, today especially, that we are meant to remain in Christ as Christ remains in us. We are also reminded that Jesus, the Incarnate God, is the vine upon which we grow, the branches that flow from the source of God’s life.

Giving up our will to God’s can be a painful endeavor. It is not easy to set our own desires and wants aside and allow God to step in and direct and guide our growth. But this is the only way to prevent deadly weeds from overtaking us and bringing us to a place of self-destruction. God’s commandments are the very guideposts and benchmarks we need, yet many seek to remove them from all public view because they appear to limit self-expression and suppress what is considered by many to be “human freedom.” They are the only way we can find freedom, however. And, until we learn this fundamental lesson, we will continue to spiral out of control, never really knowing who we are, what our potential can be or how life really can be lived. We will not know peace. ©LPi

† TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH † Thursday, May 6, 2021 EASTER WEEKDAY Focus on the essentials One of the earliest conflicts in the church had to do with whether Gentiles should have to follow the laws and customs of Judaism. Because Christianity grew out of Judaism, early church leaders had a hard time sorting out what was essential to the emerging Christian faith and what was simply the “way we’ve always done it.” This question continues to vex church leaders to this day and has gone through many iterations—from questions about ritual practices, to prayers and social norms. What is essential to the faith? That we love God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, and love our neighbor as ourselves. Everything else may well be a matter of custom. When it comes to faith, take time today to get back to the basics. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 15:7-21, John 15:9-11 (288).

Friday, May 7, 2021 EASTER WEEKDAY Connect with creation and Creator If you have a garden, you might be checking the forecast these days to see if conditions are right for planting. Gardens play an outsize role in the Christian imagination. From the Garden of Eden to the Garden of Gethsemane, key events happen in gardens. For centuries communities of sisters, brothers, and priests have cultivated gardens for food, edification, and connection to a major metaphor for spiritual development. Seek out a patch of green, and whether you plant a seed or enjoy a bloom, connecting with creation will connect you with the Creator. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 15:22-31; John 15:12-17 (289).

Saturday, May 8, 2021 EASTER WEEKDAY Elevate your spiritual gaze Blessed Teresa Demjanovich (1901-27) has been called America’s “Little Flower.” Like Thérèse from Lisieux, France, Teresa from Bayonne, New Jersey was a spiritual writer of great insight who also died young. Because of her virtue, her writings, and a miracle healing attributed to her intercession, she was beatified in the Newark cathedral in 2014, the first-ever such ceremony held in the United States. Her elevation to sainthood awaits confirmation of a second miracle. Teresa’s mother died in the 1918 pandemic, which killed well over 500,000 Americans. Sound sadly familiar? Ask Blessed Teresa’s intercession for all who have suffered because of COVID-19. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 16:1-10; John 15:18-21 (290).

Sunday, May 2, 2021 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Search for the truth We’ve entered an age when discovering the truth feels more complicated than ever. Some of us are leery of “facts,” knowing how easily they can be manufactured, massaged, or politicized Traditional sources of truth—government, news media, even organized religion—have proven to be subject to the same failures to which we ourselves are prone. How do we sort out truth from all the political noise that distorts what we hear? John says the Spirit’s been given to us for precisely this task. Pray for the gift of holy discernment. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 9:26-31; 1 John 3:18-24; John 15:1-8 (53). Monday, May 3, 2021 FEAST OF PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES Don’t think less of others Poor James the Lesser. The other apostle named James—the Greater—got the better nickname. We don’t even know anything about James the Lesser, other than his name and that Jesus picked him to be one of the 12—but that alone speaks volumes about this James. We’ve all experienced what it feels like to have labels attached to us that make us feel less in the eyes of others, if we even feel seen or known at all. But God looks past those labels to the truth of our identity. That’s where you’ll find your value and dignity, even if others don’t seem to. Remember that, like James, you are God’s chosen. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; John 14:6-14 (561). Tuesday, May 4, 2021 EASTER WEEKDAY May their force be with us Today is Teacher Appreciation Day, recognizing teachers as a force for good—especially in this pandemic year. Through John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of all teachers, we might say the best educators naturally follow a “Lasallian” philosophy of education. “The Lasallian tradition emphasizes the fact that all people, especially the young, have an inherent dignity which comes from their being created in the image of God,” explains St. Mary’s College of Winona. “Education is a means of developing this dignity for the well-being of each student as well as for the well-being of our society.” Thank a teacher today. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 14:19-28; John 14:27-31a (286). Wednesday, May 5, 2021 EASTER WEEKDAY Celebrate the dignity of diversity Though today’s “Cinco de Mayo” celebrations commemorate but a single Mexican victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, in the United States it has become an opportunity to honor the heritage and culture of Mexican people. As folks revel in parades and festivals, enjoying Mexican cuisine and music, we recall these words from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Human interdependence is increasing and spreading through the world . . . embracing people who enjoy equal natural dignity.” Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a prayer of gratitude for the richness of human diversity. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 15:1-6; John 15:1-8 (287).
