LITURGY MATTERS CONSUBSTANTIAL WITH THE FATHER Q: In the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, why has "one in being with the Father" been changed to "consubstantial with the Father?" A: The new translation is more in keeping with the ancient Latin text of the Creed and a more accurate translation. The bishops at the Council of Nicea, in order to ensure that Jesus was professed as the eternal Son of God, equal to the Father, stated that he is "the Son of God, begotten from the Father, the only-begotten, that is from the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, the same substance with the Father..." The Creed of the Council of Constantinople, which is professed at all Sunday Masses and Solemnities within the Catholic Church, similarly stated: "We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Fa-ther, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of the same substance with the Father." When these two ancient creeds were translated into Latin, the term " homoousion" was rendered as "consubstantialem," that is, "the same substance of the Father." Prior to the Second Vati-can Council, the Latin "consubstantialem" was rendered as "consubstantial" within the English translation of the Creed. Many theologians and the Holy See thought that the term "consubstantial" was more in keeping with the Latin tradition and a more literal and accurate translation than the more recent "one in being." This is in keeping with the mind of the Congrega-tion for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which published an Instruction, entitled Liturgiam Authenticam. It stated: "Certain expressions that belong to the heritage of the whole or of a great part of the ancient Church, as well as others that have become part of the general human patrimony, are to be respected by a translation that is as literal as possible".

Scrip Program Scrip is a weird word that you’ve likely never heard of before, but a long time ago, it was the word for alterna-tive money in the form of a certificate. Nowadays we could just call scrip gift card fundraising, but we like to keep the tradition going. With the textbook definition in mind, it might be easier to understand that scrip is fundraising while you shop®. Unlike other fundraising opportunities, with scrip, you raise money by purchas-ing gift cards from the parish. These gift cards all have a rebate percentage on them, normally between 2% and 16%, which is the amount that will go directly to the church when the card is purchased at face value. The gift cards we offer are the same ones you can purchase while you’re at the store. We work closely with over 750 retailers, and we purchase our gift cards directly from them so you can earn the highest rebates for the church. With so many retailers, includ-ing grocery, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels and trav-el, and even home improvement, you can use scrip on basically all of your purchases. Please support our Scrip Program by regularly buying Scrip after the Sunday morning Masses or in the office during the week. For more info call Linda in the office at 629-9495. Thank you for your support!

Treasures From Our Tradition In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and ca-thedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Nor-mally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the taber-nacle. The word “genuflect” comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can’t be genuflecting every thirty se-conds during a vacuum run. Also ex-cepted are persons in procession en-trusted with important symbols of the Lord’s presence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Com-munion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of rever-ence for the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence dur-ing prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign bor-rowed from old civic practice. The pos-ture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I’m not running away, I’m yours, I’m here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I’m yours.

DID YOU KNOW? What’s the right age? Many parents find it difficult to de-termine what responsibilities and privileges are appropriate for children at different ages. Assessing these issues can be complicated further when considering safety concerns, such as how old a child should be to be allowed to use public restrooms alone. Balancing the child’s emerg-ing independence with possible risks, such as a predator near the re-strooms, can be challenging. Whatev-er the situation, parents can make sure their children are informed about safety concerns and strategies, while they themselves remain vigi-lant. When are Chil-dren Old Enough to…?”
