Happy Mother’s Day!

Page 2: May 10, 2020 Fifth Sunday of Easter - St. Philip Catholic ...

Dear Parishioners,

Now that we've been under this quarantine for over a month and a half, indeed nearly two months, I know that a number of people are getting restless. Indeed I'm also feeling the effect of the quarantine myself, which I have had to work to counter (especially around the area of diligence and managing my time; it gets easier and easier to stay up late and sleep in and not say the Daily Mass immediately, or say it quickly, etc…). Anyway, the response of some people to this has been to bristle even to protest the continued recommendation or in some cases imposition of safeguards by the state or certain businesses/organizations, and the safeguards and cautions the Archdiocese and our parish have practiced as well.

In response to this tension, some people have been conjecturing ulterior motives on the part of those imposing restrictions, even buying into conspiracy theories and apocalyptic conjectures (ranging from plausible analysis of certain people/group’s agendas to the most absurd and uncharitable). Others have questioned the overall utility of the quarantine as compared to the other damage it is causing in our society and economy, and by extension on the quality and sustainability of people's lives (citing concerns about rates of depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, suicidal behavior, food and shelter insecurity, etc.). Some think everything has been overblown and don’t see any precautions (or precautions past a certain threshold) as ever having been needed. Yet others have responded to these folks: warning, or accusing them of a callousness or recklessness regarding the lives of our neighbors—especially those most susceptible to the Coronavirus—or even stupidity, in refusing to comply with restrictions or by desiring “to open up again” or “to start getting back to normal.” And many hold any number of mixtures of opinions, shades of intensity, or yet other perspectives among these positions. I even have my own opinions, but those aren't relevant here per se.

Like so many other controversies in our world, we Catholics do not (or at least should not) easily fall into a given ideological category or camp. We do indeed believe in the value of the common good, and the personal responsibility of individuals to contribute to it even when it involves personal sacri-fice. However, at the same time we recognize concern for the good and the infinite dignity of the indi-vidual person, and that we cannot categorically violate the individual’s rights in the name of the com-mon good (e.g. charity with someone else’s money is not charity anymore). We respect the authority and power of the government and those otherwise in authority over us, and our duty to obey legitimate authority according to the 4

th Commandment, but at the same time we recognize that a

command or law which is in principle unjust or violates a higher principle has no binding authority whatsoever; We respect that the individual has inherent rights and freedoms, but at the same time we recognize that every right comes with a responsibility and God’s gift of freedom is meant for seeking what is good and true and beautiful, and that one of those good and true and beautiful things is that we are social creatures called to love our neighbors even to the point of (freely chosen) self-sacrifice.

So where should we as Catholics stand on debates regarding personal, ecclesial, and governmental responses to Coronavirus? Honestly, this is an issue of prudential judgement, and so long as one is not categorically ignoring or callously sacrificing the common good nor the wellbeing of individuals, one is probably within the realm of morally acceptable opinions. As these conversations and choices unfold, remember to always interpret others’ opinions with the maximum amount of charity (I.e. hear and respond to the strongest version of their arguments, not a strawman or exaggeration you can arbitrarily dismiss or mock) and presume, unless definitively proven otherwise, that other people do indeed want what it best for one and all in this situation. We as Christians need to rise above the din and mudslinging, and try in good faith to form the best practical solutions to our personal and world problems in full harmony with the eternally true principles we possess.

In Christ,

Fr Thompson Blessing on Mothers “Come into God’s house. Adore the Son of the blessed Virgin Mary,

and thank God who has given you the grace of motherhood.” -Roman Ritual

Please allow at least 15-20 minutes to complete the survey.

Every day at noon, Holy Rosary and all the Catholic churches throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle will ring their bells –

a sign of unity, and a reminder of the presence of God in our midst during these challenging times.

Besides the ancient practice of praying the Angelus at noon, we are also invited to pray the Prayer to Our Lady of Seattle.

The Angelus Prayer V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.

Hail, Mary …

V. And the Word was made flesh. (genuflect or bow) R. And dwelt among us.

Hail, Mary …

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his passion

and cross be brought to the glory of his resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most holy Eucharist. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Seattle Holy Mary, we come before you as spiritual children in great need, seeking your intercession, and asking that your mantle of love surround us to console, protect and lead us to your son Jesus. We entrust all of God’s family, especially the church in Western Washington, into your immaculate hands. With your son Jesus’ gentle power you can undo any knot in our church, and in the lives of believers who entrust themselves to your care. Today I especially entrust to you [mention request here/an end to the coronavirus and help for all who have been afflicted by it] and I ask that – through your intercession, and that of St. James, our guardian angels, and the faithful in our archdiocese – we may be free from every spiritual and temporal ill, and be safely led to encounter your son’s most merciful, sacred heart.

Our Lady of Seattle, Undoer of Knots,

pray for us!
