HOW TO PREPARE

FOR HOLIDAY PET BOARDING

Finding a boarder: Word-of-mouth recommendations are one ofthe best ways to get a feel for a particular boarder if you haven’tused one before. When visiting facilities, look for certain things, including cleanliness, the number of employees available, theappearance of the animals, the areas where the pets are allowed togo and things of this nature. Ask certain questions, including howpets are housed and exercised. Find out if you are allowed to bringin food for the pet and his or her own treats to minimize stomachdiscomfort.Preparing the pet: Many boarding facilities require that pets bevaccinated prior to their stays. The boarder may have specificimmunizations that are required. Be sure to update vaccinations amonth prior to boarding the animal. Sometimes the vaccination canproduce minor symptoms of the actual illness, which the boardermay mistake as a sick dog.Checking in: Bring your pet to the boarder early and pack alongsome of the animal’s comfort toys or belongings, including a pieceof clothing that has your scent. Clearly mark bags of food and anyitems you bring so they will be identified for your dog or cat. Leavecontact information with the boarder and review the informationon how long the stay will be. Inquire as to what times are best tophone in and check up on the pet.

HOW TO GET YOUR

PETS INTO THE

HOLIDAY SPIRIT

(StatePoint) The holidays are allabout spending time with yourfamily and friends. If you’re apet owner, you’ll want to includedogs and cats in the celebration. Here are some fun ways to getpets into the holiday spirit:Family Portrait: Don’t forgetto include pets in your familyhol iday portrait! Take theopportunity to give them bathsor have them professionallygroomed so they look their best.If your family coordinates colors, adorn your dog or cat with a

matching bow or bandana. When possible, avoid using a flash. Not only may the bright light cause your pet to jump at thatcrucial moment, but there’s nothing cute about red eyes on afurry friend.Give the Gift of Health: According to the American VeterinaryMedical Association, three-fourths of dogs and cats over agethree have oral disease. And a pet’s oral health can affect his orher whole body and well-being. Luckily, a lot of these issues arepreventable with daily oral care. While tooth brushing is the goldstandard, there are more delicious dental care options, as well, that can make great gifts for pets. This year, consider giving yourdog or cat dental chews that carry the Veterinary Oral HealthCouncil Seal of Acceptance for control of plaque and tartar.

As we look forward tocelebrating another holidayseason it is important to keep thesafety of all our family, includingour four-legged ones, in mind. Here are a few tips to help make

your season merry AND safe!

1) Please be careful in your choice of holiday decorations. Holidayplants such as poinsettias, mistletoe, ivy, holly and varieties of liliescan be poisonous if ingested by your pets. Ornaments, tinsel andcandles can become choking hazards or intestinal blockages. Besure to secure your Christmas tree to ensure it isn’t knocked overby a dog or cat. Consider placing the tree in a room that can beclosed off if your furry feline is a climber. Keep ornaments andwires out of reach as glass shards from broken glass ornamentscan damage curious mouths, while wires can be potentially fatal ifchewed.

2) Although a warm holiday glow is inviting, it can spell disasterif left unattended. Make sure to use appropriate candle holderson stable surfaces and to extinguish them when you leave theroom. Scented potpourri may seem like a tasty treat to animalsbut should also be out of the reach. If liquid potpourri comes incontact with your pet’s skin, make sure to wash their furthoroughly with liquid hand soap until all oily residue is removedto decrease chance of ingestion.

3) Keep delicious leftovers for your human guests! Fatty andspicy food as well as bones should never be fed to our furryhousemates. Bones can cause blockages. Sudden diet changes, even for one meal, can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea oreven lead to more serious complications such aspancreatitis…particularly for older animals whose digestive systemscan be more delicate. Chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions are alltoxic to pets as well as macadamia nuts which can cause neurologicsigns such as hind leg weakness and staggering. Alcoholicbeverages should also be kept safe from snooping snouts becauseif ingested by your pet can cause weakness, illness or even death.

4) Although we are all happy to invite family and friends into ourhomes this season, this can be a stressful time for our pets. Crowdsof people and loud festivities can frighten animals. If possiblecreate a ‘safe place’ where your pet can seek refuge. Make sureto provide fresh water and a comfy bed in that area or room. Ifyou happen to have furry feline friends, be aware that disruptionof areas around the home, including furniture arrangements, may cause your cat to stop using the litter box in protest.

With a little planning and a few precautions we can make sure thatwe all enjoy this season!

Happy Holidays, Dr. Wiggins and Dr. Batista

DECK YOUR

HALLS WITH

WONDERFUL WALLS

Here are some tips from AimeeDesrosiers, director ofmarketing at Behr Paints, onhow to give your home a newlook just in t ime for thefestivities.1. Plan your project. Leaveyourself enough time tocomplete your project, including preparation, painting, dry time and cleanup. Certaincolors require multiple coats, sobe certain to add this into yourequation. You don’t want to berushed to finish before guestsarrive.2. Preparation is key. Removefurniture, rugs, wall art andother items that need to beprotected or move items to thecenter of the room and coverwith a drop cloth. Remove andstore light switch plates, nails, outlet covers and other itemsso you don’t have to paintaround them.3. Spend a little extra time onpreparation. Repair cracks, holes and minor imperfectionsand sand smooth any patchingmaterials. Surfaces should becleaned of dust, grime and dirtand allowed to dry, and shinysurfaces should be deglossed.4. Use high quality paintingtools. Economy rollers will leavebits of fuzz in your paint finishand poor quality brushes willresult in brush marks and drips.• To help the room feel moreformal, choose rich deep colorsand dark neutrals andincorporate moldings into yourdesign. A chair rail over thecolor dividing line is an easyway to add polish, while crownmolding visually repeats thespace and color divisionbetween the wall and ceiling fora complete look. NY CHRISTMASTREES ARE GOODFOR THE SEASON,

AND THE STATENew York State growersproduce a variety of excellentchoices for Christmas trees. They are produced in everyregion of the state from WesternNew York to Long Island, andthe Southern Tier to theAdirondacks,” states BrianEshenaur, a certif ied NYSnursery professional. “Some 15to 20 types of trees are grownfor trees in New York. The ‘truefirs’ are currently the mostpopular NY grown trees. Theseinclude Fraser fir and balsam firs, which have short, deep, dark-green needles. Other true firswith longer needles include theconcolor fir that sports a bluishcast and a citrus scent when itsneedles are bent. The veryfragrant Douglas fir, althoughnot as popular as it once was,(because growers are choosingmore disease resistant types) isstill grown on many NY farms,”states Eshenaur. Elizabeth Lamb, senior extension assoc. withCornell Cooperative Extension’sIntegrated Pest ManagementProgram says “You can buy apre-cut tree or cut your own.Christmas tree farms are one ofthe best examples of New YorkState agri-tourism as they oftenhave train, sleigh or hayrides;bonfires or wood stoves, visitswith Santa and reindeer, or otherways to make a day of choosinga tree. Christmas tree growersare also good stewards of theland. New York State IPM workswith them to help them growgood quality trees with as fewpesticides as possible.”Tips for selecting the bestChristmas tree: *Firs and pines have the bestneedle retention and can last fora month or more indoors. However if buying a spruce tree, plan to have it in the house forjust a week to 10 days.*Look for a tree with a goodsol id-green color. Needleyellowing or a slight brownspeckled color could indicatethere was a pest problem andcould lead to early needle drop.*Don’t be afraid to handle andbend the branches and shoots.Green needles should not comeoff in your hands. Also, theshoots should be flexible. Avoida tree if the needles are shed orif the shoots crack or snap withhandling.*Christmas trees should smellgood. If there isn’t muchfragrance when you flex theneedles, it may mean that thetree was cut too long ago.*If possible, make a fresh cuton the bottom so the tree’svascular tissue (pipe work) is notplugged and so the tree caneasily take up water. Then, ifyou’re not bringing it into the
