The race begins at 7:00am with a swim in the park.The bike portion of the race will begin at approximately7:25am, with bike riders leaving the Park entrance roadand heading West on Route 2. The race continues pastBrittonkill Schools onto Tamarac Rd at Stewart’s. The course follows Tamarac Rd to the end,then takes a right onto Route 7 East to Babcock Lake Rd. The race continues on Babcock LakeRd to the end, and back onto Route 2 West. The bike course leaves Route 2 at the ParkEntrance and finishes at the beach area parking lot. The bike portion of the race should befinished by approximately 11:00am. The run portion of the race takes place entirely within thepark itself.Be aware that there will be some driving delays during this time. There will be volunteers on thecourse and state police at major intersections. Please keep an eye open for bicyclists passingby your driveway and along the roadways. SHERIFFS, LAUNCHES LIFE-SAVING PROGRAMIn an effort to better serve and protect the citizens ofRensselaer County, Sheriff Mahar is offering the Yellow DotProgram. A joint effort of The New York State Sheriffs’Association and over 30 county sheriffs, the program launchedin 30 counties across the state this week.Yellow Dot is a free program designed to help first respondersprovide life-saving medical attention during the first “goldenhour” after a crash or other emergency.“When you can’t speak for yourself, Yellow Dot can speak foryou” said Peter Kehoe, Executive Director of the Sheriffs’Association.The Yellow Dot kit contains a medical information card and aYellow Dot decal. Participants complete the card, attach arecent photo, place it in the glove compartment of theirvehicle, and place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’sside window.First responders arriving at the scene of an emergency will bealerted by the Yellow Dot decal to look for the medicalinformation card in the glove compartment. “When someone cannot verbally respond to our deputies,reading the Yellow Dot card could save lives by giving our firstresponders vital medical information,” said Sheriff Mahar.“Committing to this program is the logical next step for ourDeputies who are EMT certified.”Funded by Sheriff Mahar and the New York State Sheriffs’Association, the Yellow Dot Program is a free service availableto individuals of all ages. RENSSELAER COUNTY RELEASES ENERGY

SAVINGS REPORTEnergy Performance Contract with Siemens Saves over

$250,000 in past yearRensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino and LegislativeChairman Martin Reid have announced the first year’s resultsof the County’s Energy Performance Contract with Siemens.As part of the 15 year contract the County paid Siemens $1.6million to perform energy upgrades to the County Office thatincluded a computerized Energy Management System, newventilation system, as well as new heating and cooling systems.Under the contract the County is guaranteed to save over$2.6 million on its energy costs during that same 15 year period.For the first year of the contract from May 2011 to April 2012the County actually realized $252,545 in savings significantlyhigher than the projected $136,610.“This is a win-win for the resident of Rensselaer County as weare able to cut the cost of our governmental operations byreducing our energy consumption. Based on the results wehave achieved in the County office building we will be lookingto implement similar programs in other county owned facilitiesto further reduce our energy consumption and expenses,”said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino.“We are working to protect taxpayers during these challengingeconomic times and make every dollar count, whether it bethrough innovative energy purchases, shared services,refinancings or rebids of county insurance policies. It is greatto see this energy performance contract not only generating asavings, but actually exceeding our initial expectations andproducing a higher savings than initially forecast,” said Chairmanof the Legislature Martin Reid.

REVERSE REJECTION OF COST SAVINGS

PROPOSALS AT V.R. MANORRensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino is calling upon theCounty Legislature to reverse their position and accept herproposal to subcontract out the security function at theCounty’s owned and operated nursing home, the Van RensselaerManor. The savings to County taxpayers would be over$70,000 a year by outsourcing the function. The savings areachieved mainly through the elimination of overtime and thehigher benefit package that must be paid to employees ratherthan subcontractors. “This proposal would improve the securityfunction at the facility and reduce overall costs. Further, thiseffort to subcontract is in line with the County Legislator’s ownBudget Task Force that recommended that the County provideservices wherever possible through independent contractors,as opposed to through employees,” said Rensselaer CountyExecutive Kathleen M. Jimino.This is the second resolution submitted by the County Executiveto outsource the security function at the manor. The firstproposal that would have outsourced all five security positionswas rejected by the legislature in May. This most recentresolution called for the outsourcing of one currently vacantposition with the intention of outsourcing the other four positionswhen they become vacant either due to resignations or as aresult of the County offering alternative employment optionswithin the County. The outsourcing of the one currently vacantposition was expected to save nearly $6,000 for the rest of2012 alone. Vortek International was chosen to perform theduties through a competitive bidding process to provide Security,Access Control, and General Safety at the Van RensselaerManor. All of their security guards are New York State Licensed.

(BRITTONKILL) CSD BOETwo Tamarac alumni from the Class of 2004 are leading theBrunswick (Brittonkill) Central School District Board of Educationafter being elected President and Vice President in July.Matt Wade was re-elected President of the Board and KyleChristiansen was elected Vice President at the Board’s July 5reorganization meeting.Mr. Wade, who grew up in Brunswick, first ran for the Board ofEducation in 2009, two days after graduating from GeorgeWashington University in Washington, DC.“While I loved Washington, it made me realize how much Iappreciated family and friends at home,” Mr. Wade said. “I ranfor the Board to ensure a recent student’s perspective wasincluded in the decision-making process and to give back to aplace that had prepared me well enough to work in theengineering world.”Mr. Wade currently works in the nuclear engineering field. Heearned a master’s degree at RPI in 2009 while serving on theBoard. He was elected to a second term on the Board in 2011.Mr. Christiansen, who was born and raised in Pittstown, saidhe had a similar passion to give back to his alma mater andcommunity.“I joined the Board to give back to the school that has taughtme so much,” Mr. Christiansen explained. “I believed with myhistory at Brittonkill, as well as my educational and professionalbackground, that I had a lot to offer the district.”After graduating from Tamarac, Mr. Christiansen attendedSiena College and went on to Albany Law School, where hegraduated in 2011. FUSED GLASS WORKSHOP IN GRAFTONThe Grafton Community Librarypresents two introductory Fused GlassWorkshops as part of the GraftonCommunity Arts Program that has beenawarded grant funding from The ArtsCenter of the Capital Region, throughthe NYS Council on the Arts.Participants will learn properties of glassrelating to fusing dichroic glass to makejewelry or glass pieces. DOGS IN HOT CARSLetter to the Editor: Every summer it is the same thing. Animalcontrol officers and police are called to restaurant and shoppingmall parking lots to rescue dogs left in vehicles. While it would seemjust common sense not to leave an animal in a car in this weather itis still going on with frightening regularity. All manner of excusesare offered including the most popular: “I was just going to be inthe store for a few minutes”, “I left the windows down” and “Iparked in the shade”.Just a few minutes can be a few minutes too long since a car is likea hot house trapping heat inside. On a 75 degree day, a car canreach 100 degrees in only 10 minutes, 82 degrees outside, 109 insidethe car, and so on. When the windows are open, there may be adifference of a few degrees, the same with shade, but not enough tomake a deadly situation safe.What can happen? Your dog can die. Your car window can besmashed by police in order to get your dog out. You can getarrested for animal cruelty. You can tell your story to anunsympathetic judge. You can pay a fine.
