LEGISLATORS MOURN PASSING OF

JOHN KACHARIANMembers of the Rensselaer County Legislature are mourningthe passing of John Kacharian, who spent decades informingresidents about local history and history and use of theAmerican flag.A resident of Sand Lake, Kacharian died this week after a longillness.Kacharian was nationally recognized as an expert of the historyand proper use of the American flag. Kacharian had beenconsulted on proper placement of the flag in the legislativechambers and lent his talents and experience regarding theflag to many organizations and municipalities. “If you had a question about the American flag, John Kacharianwas the man to see. He was an expert on the origins andhistory of the flag, and knew all the protocols on how to correctlydisplay or use the flag,” said Chairman of the Legislature MartinReid.Legislator Tom Walsh worked with Kacharian at the WatervlietArsenal. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,Kacharian founded museums at the Arsenal and helpeddocument and collect history from the venerable armsmanufacturing site. “John Kacharian played a very important role in documentingand preserving the history of the Watervliet Arsenal, whichhas produced weapons and supplies to defend our nation sincethe War of 1812. Without John’s work, much of the history ofthe Arsenal would have been lost or never discovered,” saidWalsh.Kacharian also took an interest in civic affairs, including theTroy Flag Day parade. He was also active in the Armeniancommunity. Legislator Harry Tutunjian met Kacharian at theSt. Peter’s Apostolic Church. “John was a good and patriotic man. He was a pillar of theFlag Day parade, and he loved his community, his church andflag. He will be missed and we share our condolences with hismany friends and family,” said Tutunjian.A resolution to mourn the passing of Kacharian and to recognizehis accomplishments will be introduced for consideration at anupcoming meeting of the Legislature this fall.

ADVICE FROM THE RENSSELAER COUNTY

DAIRY PRINCESS

It is back to school time. Please remember howimportant it is to pack some dairy products in yourlunch box or use as an after school snack. All wehear about these days is eating healthy, so youmay ask yourself why milk and dairy products? Why not, dairy products provide you with nineessentials nutrients, and will give you strong teeth

and bones. What do these nine essential nutrients do? Well, let’s go throughthem all. Vitamin A improves your vision and helps you see well. While phosphorus helps to generate energy in the body’s cells.Vitamin D will help your body absorb calcium. Milk builds andrepairs muscles in your body with protein. Potassium is used tomaintain blood pressure that helps your heart. Riboflavin foundin milk helps convert food into energy that your body can use.Take a breath cause vitamin B12 helps you breathe. Niacin inmilk helps your body digest your food. To build and maintainstrong teeth and bones look to calcium. These nutrients are allin milk and dairy products and they are so important for yourbody. You can see that milk and dairy products are one nutrientpacked food. How many other foods can do all this for you?Recently, I was a guest of the Valley Cats, what a great place;and the staff was super nice to The Rensselaer County DairyPrincess Program, Ambassadors and myself. If you get achance, you should “catch” a game.~Courtney Luskin, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess
