DUTCH HISTORY IN THE CAPITAL REGION

1650 – 1664 - LECTUREOn Thursday, May 29th, at 6:30PM,Janny Venema, PhD, AssociateDirector of the New NetherlandInstitute will be at the Troy PublicLibrary to discuss The Dutch Historyin the Capital Region from 1650 -1664.In 1652, Petrus Stuyvesant, director general of NewNetherland, established a court at Fort Orange, on the westside of New York State’s upper Hudson River. The area withinthree thousand feet of the fort became the village of Beverwijck. From the time of its establishment until 1664, when the Englishconquered New Netherland and changed the name of thesettlement to Albany, Beverwijck underwent rapid developmentas newly wealthy traders, craftsmen, and other workers builthouses, roads, bridges, and a school, as well as a number ofinns. A well-organized system of poor relief also helped lesswealthy settlers survive in the harsh colonial conditions.Although Beverwijck resembled villages in the Dutch Republic inmany ways, it quickly took on features of the new, “American”society that was already coming into being.Dr. Venema will also speak about Kiliaen van Rensselaer andthe patroonship of Rensselaerswijck. This program is free and open to the public. Registration isnecessary. For more information, and to register, call the libraryat 274-7071 or online at www.thetroylibrary.org. The TroyPublic Library is located at 100 2nd Street, Troy, NY.

TOWN OF SAND LAKE

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

The annual Town of Sand Lake Memorial Day Parade will be heldon May 26th, 2014 in Averill Park, sponsored by the LieutenantPerry Williams VFW Post and Sgt. Walter A. Adams AmericanLegion Post. The parade will begin assembling at Averill Avenue, Averill Parkat 9:00 AM and will step off at 10:00 AM. The parade willproceed east on NYS Route 43 to the Sand Lake Veteran’sMemorial Park where a service will be conducted.Refreshments will be served following the Memorial Day Service. All are welcome to join us to remember those armed forcesmembers lost in service to their country.

IT BEGAN WITH A VISION TO UNITE OUR

MEMORIALS

A towering flag pole could soon rise over a grassy knoll in frontof Averill Park High School marking a memorial park to the town’sveterans. The proposal has been a long time coming for members of thetown American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. The proposal calls for bringing together two small monumentsnow at different sites and combining them as one memorial. One is a World War I stone near the elementary school inAverill Park and the other a World War II stone at theintersection of Routes 43 and 150 in West Sand Lake.“This will draw the town together,” said Bill Hoffay, a senior vicecommander in the Sgt. Walter Adams American Legion Post.“Up to now, Averill Park has the Memorial Day observance oneyear at the school and West Sand Lake has it the next at theintersection. Though there are differing opinions on the matterof moving the World War II memorial monument from theintersection due to the sentimental values the monument heldto our Veterans who still live in our community. Veterans uponreturning from the war in 1940 immediately launched a fund-raising drive to build the monument to honor residents who didnot come home. The World War I monument, which sits nearthe Sand Lake Elementary School on the district’s campus, willbe moved to the new site and stones marking the Korean,Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars will be added as well asremembrances of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars,” said Hoffay.Conceptual plans for the memorial were created by VollmerAssociates design engineer Mike Groff, a Sand Lake resident, who has donated his professional services to the project.“It’s a beautiful spot and I’d like to get the whole town involvedin the design”…. “This is something different”, said Hoffay. “It’ssomething we need to honor our town’s many veterans of war,as well as to preserve the history for our children”.Portions of this story came from the Times Union by BobGardinier. THE VISION BECAME A REALITY….

The Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park got its official start in 2001when the Town received a parcel of ground from the Averill ParkSchool District. A committee was formed to design the park. Groundbreaking was June 15th, 2002 and construction of the back wall wasstarted.Bonded Concrete donated all the concrete, Steve Fiske Constructionbuilt the walls, Rifenburg Construction, Cristo Demolition, Inc., WhiteOak Construction, and Blair Construction provided men andequipment for the excavation work. The total cost for that phase ofthe project was approximately $60,000 and it was ALL DONATED.In 2009, the walkway between the two walls was poured and flagpoles were installed. Money for the flag poles was donated by theRanellucci family in memory of PFC Raymond A. Ranellucci, whowas killed in action in Vietnam, March 15, 1966.In the fall of 2010, we added six granite panels to the wall. At therequest of the Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park committee, theAverill Park High School Military History class composed thededication that is now on the wall. “Dedicated To Those CommonMen and Women Who Proudly Served Our Country WithUncommon Valor”. A very patriotic and heartfelt sentiment fromsome fine young citizens. In 2011, with renewed spirit and a $5,000 donation from the AverillPark and Sand Lake Fire Company and the anonymous donationof $5,100, we continued the work still needed for the Veteran’sMemorial Park.George Brothers – Increte of Albany constructed the rest of thewalkways at a discounted price, while Blair Construction brought intop soil and did the final grading. Scheeren’s Landscaping hydroseeded the site for just the cost of materials and The Sand LakeGarden Club generously donated six trees for the park. The Veteran’s monuments in Town were moved to the park with thehelp of Blair Construction, C.J. Miner, Inc. from Valatie and Grethen-Chrenger Memorials. The next project was construction of a small shed for utilities, whichwas donated by Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel and Bryce FuneralHomes. In memory of Major George Quamo who was killed in action April14, 1968 in Vietnam, a fountain was built. Jeff Patanian installed theelectric along with the pump for the fountain. In the fall of 2011, the wall was engraved with a dedication and thenames of all men from the Town of Sand Lake who served in theRevolutionary and The Civil Wars.Eligibility to have a veteran’s name engraved on the Sand LakeVeteran’s Memorial Park wall is that All Veteran’s of the Town ofSank Lake and surrounding communities are eligible. All activeduty, National Guard, Reserves, Coast Guard and Merchant Marinemen and women are qualified. Combat service is not required andout of town Veterans with family in the town are also eligible. Proofof service is required with a DD-214 and/or discharge papers.Contact the Veterans Memorial Committee for additional informationand rates.Though we have made great progress on the park, there is still somuch more to do. With your contribution to the Sand Lake Veteran’sMemorial Park, you can help us to preserve the History of SandLake’s Veteran’s and Honor all those who served to ensure yourfreedom. Donations can be sent to Sand Lake Veteran’s MemorialPark, 171 Biittig Road, Averill Park, NY 12018. Never Forget.

A SPRING TUNE-UP

IS KEY

“Homeowners simply wanttheir lawn mower to startwhen they need it for that firstcut of spring and a simpletune-up can make thedifference between a hassle-free start and frustrating tripsfor service,” said SynoilvaShaw with the Briggs &Stratton Engine Marketingdepartment. “While thesource of most startingproblems is old gasoline—which goes stale in about 30days—a tune-up can helpextend the life of the mowerengine and keep it running atpeak performance.”Prepping A Push MowerA tune-up for a push mowerengine can reduce engineemissions by as much as 30percent and involves just foureasy steps:1. Changing the mower oil2. Replacing the air filter3. Replacing the spark plug4. Adding fuel preservative tothe gasoline. Step-by-stepvideo instructions areavailable online atwww.briggsandstratton.com.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED to

RAISE FUNDS for MS RESEARCH

A local teen with multiple sclerosis (MS) hasinspired the formation of a New YorkChapter of Moms Against MS. The groupwill hold its first event next month to raisefunds for the National MS Society’s upstateNew York Chapter.

The New York chapter of Moms Against MS was founded byTracey Wardwell, a Greenwich resident whose daughterCarrissa, now 13, was diagnosed with MS at the age of 12.Carrissa is a 7th grader at Greenwich Central School. In multiple sclerosis, damage to the myelin sheath (protectivecovering around a neuron), in the central nervous system andto the nerve fibers themselves, interferes with the transmissionof messages or nerve signals between the brain and spinalcord and other parts of the body. “When my daughter Carrissa was diagnosed with multiplesclerosis on February 11, 2013, our lives were foreverchanged,” Wardwell said. “We had so many questions aboutwhat the future held for Carrissa, our family and what wasnext: Would Carrissa continue to get lesions on her brain? Ifshe did, would she have another ‘episode’ and would theepisode leave her paralyzed? Would she lose her eye sight?”Carrissa’s first episode took place on Mother’s Day weekend in2012, but she was not diagnosed until nearly a year later.Diagnosis in children is more difficult than in adults because ofthe frequency of other childhood disorders with similarsymptoms and characteristics. In addition, pediatricians maynot be familiar with MS because they are not expecting to seeit in children.Wardwell, a branch manager for Key Bank, formed the NewYork chapter of Moms Against MS to enhance awareness ofpediatric MS and to raise funds for MS research and patientand caregiver support. Her group will hold a mother-daughter brunch and fashion showon Sunday June 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hilton GardenInn on Hoosick Street in Troy. Those interested in attending orsupporting the event should visit momsagainstms-ny.com.
