Introduction – student categories

New studentsYouareanewstudentifyouarestartinganundergraduatecourseorpostgraduatecoursebycoursework.YourjourneywithCDUbeginswhenyoureceiveanofferletterfromtheSouthAustralianTertiaryAdmissionCentre(SATAC).OnceyouhavereceivedanofferofaplacefromSATAC,youshouldaccepttheofferwithSATAC.YouwillthenreceiveanenrolmentpackageoranemailfromCDUthatincludesyourstudentIdentificationNumber(studentID).ThisnumberisnecessaryforyoutologintoMyStudentInfoontheuniversitywebsiteandenrolonline.Thisnumbermustbequotedonallcorrespondencewiththeuniversity.

Continuing studentsYouareacontinuingstudentifyouarereturningtostudyinthesamecourseastheprevioussemester,orarereturningfromanofficialintermission.IfyoudonotadvisetheuniversityofyourintentiontoreturntoyourcourseofstudybytherelevantCensusdates,youareconsideredtobewithdrawnfromthe

course.Forexample,ifyoudonotenrolfor2012anddonotsubmitaformseekingaformalintermission,youractivityinthecoursewillbelapsedbeforethenextadmissionperiod,e.g.aroundtheendofSeptembereachyear.Alllapsedstudentswillberequiredtore-applyforadmissionthroughSATACatthenextavailableadmissionperiod.

StudentstransferringfromtheBatchelorInstituteofIndigenousTertiaryEducationarerequiredtoenrolfor2012.Studentswhodonotenrolin2012willberequiredtore-applyforadmissionthroughSATACfor2013.

International students AninternationalstudentisastudentwhoisnotanAustraliancitizennorapermanentresidentofAustralianoraNewZealandcitizen.Youmaybeanewstudentoracontinuingstudent.Aninternationalstudentwillhavebeenissuedastudentvisagrantingpermissiontostudy.Internationalstudentsmeettheentirecostoftheirstudiesthroughtuitionfees(unlesstheyareundertakingtheexchangeprogram).PleasereadthisguideinconjunctionwiththeInternationalStudentGuide.

TheAustralianCentreforIndigenousKnowledgesandEducationwillprovidepathwaystobuildthesocial,human,economicandidentitycapitalofIndigenouspeoplesacrossAustralia.TheCentre,acollaborativepartnershipbetweenBIITEandCDU,aspirestointernationalrenownforexcellenceandresultsinitsteachingandlearningprograms,communityengagementandresearchendeavours.

ACIKE’stransformativeandinnovativeteachingandlearning,researchandcommunityengagementwill:

• privilegeandchampionIndigenousidentity,knowledgesandrelationalwaysofbeinginwaysthatempowerindividualsandcommunitiesandenhanceculturalsecurity

• emphasisea“bothways”approachtodevelopinginterculturalcommunication,decisionmaking,governanceandwaysofdoingbusiness

• benefitIndigenouscommunitiesintheNTandnationally.

ThefoundationsonwhichACIKEisbuiltarerespectforAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderethicsandprotocols,respectfordifferenceanddiversity,trust,creativity,flexibilityandadaptability,responsibilityandaccountability.

ACIKEwillharnessthecomplementarystrengthsofitsfoundinginstitutionsfortheirmutualbenefit.BIITE’sculturallyresponsiveapproachtocurriculumdevelopmentanddeliveryanddeepunderstandingofremoteIndigenousperspectives,joinedwithCDU’sexpertiseinflexiblehighereducationdelivery,strongIndigenousresearchbaseandsolidsupportinfrastructure,willexpandcapabilitiestodeliverwithgreaterefficiencyandeffectivenessstrongeroutcomesforIndigenousstudents.

TheCentrewilldeliverarangeofcoursesfromEnabling(PreparationforTertiarySuccess)topostgraduatecoursesusingInternal,ExternalandWorkshopdeliveryapproaches.Therearethreemaindeliverysites;themainACIKEHubatCDUCasuarinacampusandatBIITEcampuses–BatchelorandDesertPeoplesCentreinAliceSprings.

IlookforwardtomeetingACIKEstudentsthroughoutthe2012teachingsemestersandwishyouwellinyourstudieswiththeCentre.AstheCentreisanewpartnershiptherewillbeseveraloccasionswhereyouwillbeinvitedtoletusknowaboutyourexperiencesandhowwemightbeabletoimproveyourlearningexperiences.

Transitioning students YouareatransitioningstudentifyoucommencedyourstudiesattheBatchelorInstituteofIndigenousTertiaryEducation(BIITE)andmusttransfertoACIKEinordertocompleteyourstudiesin/orpost2012.YouwillhavehadyourBIITEcoursemappedacrosstoaCDUaccreditedcoursethroughACIKEandreceivedaletterfromBIITEalongwithacoursestudyplanfor2012.TransitioningstudentsdonothavetoapplytoSATAC.YouwillreceiveanenrolmentpackagefromCDUthatincludesyourstudentIdentificationnumber(studentID).ThisnumbermustbequotedonallcorrespondencewithACIKEandCDUandisnecessaryforyoutoenrolonline.

Orientation Whetheryouareafirst-timestudent,onereturningtostudyoracontinuingstudent,orientationisamustforyou.CDUrecognisestheimportanceofensuringthatallstudentsarefamiliarwiththeircampuses,courserequirementsandtheservicesavailable.Orientationwillhelpyoutofindyourwayaroundcampus,provideanintroductiontoyourcourse,facultystaffandalltheservicesavailabletoyou.Orientationwillensurethatwhenyouattendyourfirstlecturesyouarewellequippedtostartyourstudies.ForinformationonthedatesandtimesforOrientationvisitW:cdu.edu.au/orientation.

External units Unitsofstudyforwhichthestudentisenrolledinvolvespecialarrangementswherebylessonmaterials,assignments,etc.aredeliveredtothestudent,andanyassociatedattendanceattheinstitutionisofanincidental,irregular,specialorvoluntarynature.Attendanceoncampusisnotrequired.Dependingontheunit,studentswilleitherbesentwrittenmaterial,and/orbegivenaccesstotheonlinelearningmanagementsystem(Learnline).

AllHigherEducationunitsofferedbytheuniversityarecategorisedasOLR,OL,orPB.Someexternalunitsaredeliveredonline100percentofthetimeandhavenoprint-basedmaterials.TheseunitsaremarkedasOnlineReliant(OLR),whilstotherunitsoffersupplementarymaterialsonline.ThesearemarkedasOnline(OL).

Clinical Placement InformationStudentsmaynominateforaplacementintheirownstateorterritoryatapreferredhealthcarefacility,butarenotpermittedtoarrangetheirownplacement/s.

CDUhasstrongtieswithbothprivateandpublichealthcarefacilitiesthroughoutAustraliaandhassuccessfullyplacedstudentsinallstatesandterritories.

However, due to the demand made on interstate health care facilities by many educational institutions, many facilities are now limiting the number of placements they offer and this may impact on course progression.

Students may need to travel outside their home state to complete their placement unit/s.

Student Learning Entitlement TheAustralianGovernmenthasintroducedtheStudentLearningEntitlement(SLE).TheSLEgivesallAustraliancitizens,NewZealandcitizensandholdersofapermanentvisaaccesstoaCommonwealth-supportedplaceforsevenyearsofequivalentfull-timestudy.

Tax File Number (TFN) AstudentwishingtodeferallorpartofthefeestotaxmustsupplyaTaxFileNumber(TFN).ATFNisnecessaryifastudentwantstoauthorisetheuniversitytodeferallorpartoftheHECScontributiontotaxandincaseastudenthaschosentheup-frontpaymentoptionbutfailstomakeapaymentbytherelevantCensusdate.

ItisarequirementundertheHigherEducationSupportAct2003thattheenrolmentbecancelledaftertherelevantCensusdateifastudentdoesnotprovidepersonalTFNwhererequired.

IfastudentcannotprovideaTFNhe/sheshouldimmediatelycontacttheAustralianTaxationOffice(ATO)toobtaineitheraTFNoracertificatefromtheATOtoindicatethatthestudenthasappliedforaTFN.

ThiscertificatefromtheATOcanbesubmittedwiththeenrolmentasaninterimmeasurewhiletheapplicationforaTFNisbeingprocessed.

CHESSN TheCommonwealthHigherEducationStudentSupportNumber(CHESSN)isauniqueidentifierthatuniversitiesmustuseasof2005incommunicationswiththeAustralianGovernmentconcerningastudentwho:

WhenastudentbelievesthattheinformationontheCANisincorrect,thestudentmust,within14daysofdispatchoftheCAN,asktheuniversity(viatheInformationCentre)inwritingfortheCANtobecorrected.Verbalrequestsarenotconsidered.Therequestmustspecifytheparticularinformationhe/sheconsiderstobeincorrectandthereasonswhyitisconsideredincorrect.Makingtherequestdoesnotaffecttheliabilityofthestudenttopaythecontribution,northestudent’sentitlementtoCommonwealthassistance.

Theuniversitywillconsidertherequestassoonaspossible,andnotifythestudentofitsdecisioninwriting.IftheuniversityfindsthattheinformationontheoriginalCANwasincorrect,orceasedtobecorrect,theuniversitywillissueanewCANtothestudentwiththecorrectinformation.Studentrecordswillbecorrected,anddatasenttoDEEWRaccordingly.

What happens if I do not pay my fees by the Census date?

What qualifies as special circumstances for the purpose of a remission?Specialcircumstancesincludeunusualcircumstanceswhicharebeyondaperson’scontrol.Theuniversityshallassessifthespecialcircumstanceshavearisenduetotheapplicant’sactionorinaction,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,andforwhichthepersonisnotresponsible.

Itcanalsobecircumstancesthatmakeitimpracticalforthepersontocompletetherequirementsfortheirunitofstudyandmayincludemedicalcircumstances,forexample,whereaperson’smedicalconditionhaschangedtosuchanextentthatheorsheisunabletocontinuestudyingorapersonhasexperiencedfamily/personalcircumstancessuchasdeathorseveremedicalorfinancialproblemswithinafamily,suchthatitisunreasonabletoexpectapersontocontinuestudying.

Employment-relatedcircumstancesforexample,whereaperson’semploymentstatusorarrangementshavechangedsothatthepersonisunabletocontinuehisorherstudies,and

thischangeisbeyondtheperson’scontrol.Orcourse-relatedcircumstances,forexample,wheretheproviderhaschangedtheunitithadofferedandthepersonisdisadvantagedbyeithernotbeingabletocompletetheunit,ornotbeinggivencredittowardsotherunitsorcourses.

Apersonisunabletocompletetherequirementsforaunit,forexample,ifthepersonisunabletoundertakethenecessaryprivatestudyrequired,attendsufficientlecturesortutorialsandmeetothercompulsoryattendancerequirementsinordertomeettheircourserequirements,orcompletetherequiredassessablework,orsittherequiredexaminations,orcompleteanyothercourserequirementsbecauseoftheirinabilitytomeettheabove.

Specialcircumstancesdonotincludelackofknowledgeorunderstandingofrequirementsundertheschemesoraperson’sincapacitytorepayaHigherEducationLoanProgramme(HELP)debt.Repaymentsareincome-contingentandthepersoncanapplyforadeferralofacompulsoryrepaymentincertaincircumstances.
