THE NEED TO EVANGELIZE

In a previous article we had begun noting that one reason why we need to be involved in evangelizing our world is the fact that our time is limited. The Psalmist had said that “the days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psa. 90:10). But there are many other passages that emphasize the same thing. Job declared that “Man who is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble. 2 He comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and does not continue” (Job 14:1, 2). Not only are our years limited, Job also tells us that they are gone all too quickly. “My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, And are spent without hope” (Job 7:6). “Now my days are swifter than a runner; They flee away, they see no good” (Job 9:25). The time will come if it hasn’t already, when each of us will look back over our life and wonder, “How could it all be gone so soon?” Seventy years will seem to have past faster than a weaver’s shuttle. It will seem to have vanished as smoke or vapor or wind. A few more years and we will have no more opportunity to warn, to tell the good news and to encourage people to obey. A few more days and those we had the opportunity to teach will be gone! I remember Dan Jenkins showing my wife Donna and I some slides from his years working in Fiji. One was of an old priest and another of a young child. The priest was part of a pagan religion. “In all likelihood,” Dan told us, “this man has already gone out into eternity unpre-pared and if something isn’t done, if someone doesn’t go and teach them that young child will suffer the same fate.” Secondly, we need to evangelize now because eternity is long! Eternity, infinity, everlasting are all con-cepts that are extremely hard to grasp. Our mind is lim-ited by experience to things that are limited by time. Every person, every object is finite in this world. There is an end to it all. Thus it is hard to understand eternity. Think in terms of a prison sentence. How long is a long prison sentence? Ten years? 20 years? 50 years? Life? Whichever they all have an end. Think of the Jews in captivity in Babylon. They were there for 70 years. That may sound long but it ended. Egyptian bondage lasted more than 400 years. That sounds like a long time, but it ended! We measure things by time but eternity is an absence of time. There is no end to eternity. There is no end to the joy of the righteous in heaven or to the suffer-ing of the wicked in hell. Thirdly, we need to be evangelizing our world be-cause sin is so horrible. Sin is the only inherent evil in the world. We talk about the horror of physical catastro-phes such as tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, earth-quakes, fires, famines and pestilence. Such things as this may be instrumentally evil (that is they may lead to real evil, sin).
