February is here. During this month, we will be sending report cards home to all families. Reports cards will be distributed Wednesday, February 8th. Please talk with teachers about the progress or your son/daughter. Parents, guardians, and grandparents are IMPORTANT in the education of our children. We all need your support! Together We Can!

Febrero está aquí. Durante este mes estaremos enviando el reporte de calificaciones a todas las familias. Los reportes de calificaciones se distribuirán el miércoles, 8 de febrero. WHAT WILL STUDENTS

3rd In math we are starting to examine

fractions on a number line. We will

be locating fractions, creating

number lines and comparing

number lines. We will also be

finding equivalent fractions using

number lines and pictures.

In science we will be describing

friction and exploring surfaces that

have more and less friction. We will

explore conductors and insulators

and conduct experiments to test out

our theories.

In reading we will be exploring

change and looking at how story

elements change throughout a

book.

In writing we will be writing about

the story elements of the book

Brave Irene. We will also be

writing about the theme, message

and main idea and our opinion of

Brave Irene’s actions. We will also

be researching about a fundraiser

called Alex’s Lemonade Stand. We

will research cancer and will hold

our own lemonade stand to raise

money for cancer research. Look for

our flyer coming soon!

In math, students represent and solve real-world

multiplication problems with fractions in different ways and

apply and explain efficient strategies to multiply

fractions. In reading, students summarize a story or poem

by determining the theme from details in the text and

describe how a narrator or speaker’s point of view

influences the description on of events. In science, students

describe how light interacts with different materials

(transparent, translucent, opaque). In social studies,

students compare human characteristics of different places

and regions of Maryland and the United States Ms. Wilson-Murray

It’s hard to believe we are already starting marking period 3. In reading, we will ask and answer

questions with informational text. In writing, we will begin a new research project on a coun-

try. The students will have to name a topic, gather information, and supply facts. In math, we will

begin our measurement unit. We will compare and order objects by length and height. In social

studies, we will learn about physical features that can be used to describe a place. Lastly in sci-

ence, we will identify materials from the Earth’s surface. Have a fantastic month!

Art

Students in second grade observed pottery from Japan called Jomon Pottery. We compared pottery

from different regions of Japan and identified lines, shapes and patterns. Students then used the coil

method to construct their own coil pot. Glaze was then applied to add color to the pot.

In Reading, we will be reading and having collaborative discussions about informational texts; asking

and answering questions, using context clues and determining the meaning of words and phrases, ex-

amining an author's reasons to support a point, comparing and contrasting information, and identifying

and using text features.

In Writing, we will be writing opinion pieces that introduce a topic and state an opinion, supply reasons

to support, and provide a concluding statement.

In Math, we will be using number lines, linear measurement units (i.e. centimeters, meters, inches and

feet) and tools (i.e. rulers, yardstick, meter stick and measuring tape) to determine the relationship be-

tween the sizes of the unit. We will continue to use mental strategies to add and subtract within 20

and place value strategies to add and subtract within 100.

In Science, we will describe the observable properties of the Sun, Moon, plants, insects and ani-

mals over time.

In Social Studies, we will examine technology and transportation, and how they have both changed over

time. We will also examine the production process of natural, capital and human resources.

En matemáticas estamos empezando

diferentes maneras y aplican y explican estrategias eficientes

para multiplicar fracciones. En lectura, los estudiantes resumen

una historia o un poema determinando el tema a partir de los

detalles en el texto y describiendo cómo el punto de vista de un

narrador influye en la descripción de los eventos. En ciencia, los

estudiantes describen cómo la luz actua con diferentes materiales

(transparente, translúcido, opaco). En estudios sociales, los

estudiantes comparan características humanas de diferentes

Es difícil creer que ya estamos empezando con el tercer trimestre. En lectura, haremos y res-

ponderemos preguntas con texto informativo. En escritura, comenzaremos un nuevo proyecto

de investigación sobre un país. Los estudiantes tendrán que nombrar un tema, recopilar infor-

mación y proveer hechos. En matemáticas, comenzaremos nuestra unidad de medida. Com-

pararemos y ordenaremos objetos usando longitud y altitud. En estudios sociales, aprendere-

mos sobre las características físicas que se pueden utilizar para describir un lugar. Por último,

en ciencia, identificaremos los materiales de la superficie de la Tierra. ¡Que tengan un mes

fantástico!

En Reading, leeremos y tendremos discusiones de colaboración sobre textos informativos;

Haciendo y respondiendo preguntas, utilizando pistas dentro del texto y definiendo el signi-

ficado de palabras y frases, examinando las razones de un autor para apoyar un punto, com-

parar y diferenciar una información, e identificar y usar características de texto.

En Escritura, escribiremos conceptos de opinión que introducen un tema y expresan una

opinión, dar razones de apoyo y proveer una reporte final.

En matemáticas, usaremos líneas numéricas, unidades de medida lineales (centímetros, me-

tros, pulgadas y pies) y herramientas (regla, metro y cinta métrica) para determinar la rela-

ción entre los tamaños de la unidad. Seguiremos utilizando estrategias mentales para sumar

y restar dentro de 20 y estrategias de lugar de valor para sumar y restar dentro de 100.

En Ciencia, describiremos las propiedades del Sol, la Luna, las plantas, los insectos y los

animales durante su tiempo.

En Estudios Sociales, examinaremos la tecnología y el transporte, y cómo ambos han cam-

biado con el tiempo. También examinaremos el proceso de producción de recursos huma-

nos, naturales, y de fondos.

Los estudiantes en segundo grado observaron la cerámica de Japón llamada cerámica de

Jomon. Comparamos cerámica de diferentes regiones de Japón e identificamos líneas, formas

y patrones. Los estudiantes entonces usaron el método de la bobina para construir su propia

base. Se aplicó un esmalte para agregar color a la base.

PTA

Hello KMES families! Our school’s PTA is working hard this year to support EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION. The PTA works with our teachers and administra-

tion to increase the enrichment of our children’s education. We need your help. Did you check your child’s Friday Folder on February 3rd? There was a flier

from PTA about the February Fundraiser. Use the envelope attached to the flier to send in any donation amount. All money is used only at our school, this

school year, and pays for in-school assemblies, field trips, after-school activities, dances, the book fair, and more. Recently, our PTA parents met with MCPS

and helped save our computer lab, sent testimony to the Montgomery County Board of Education about funding needs at our school, and learned tips to help

¡Hola familias de KMES! El PTA de nuestra escuela está trabajando muy fuerte este año para apoyar la EXCELENCIA EN EDUCACIÓN. El PTA trabaja con

nuestros maestros y la administración para aumentar el enriquecimiento de la educación de nuestros hijos. Necesitamos su ayuda. ¿Revisó el archivo del

Viernes 3 de Febrero? Había un volante del PTA sobre la recaudación de fondos de Febrero. Utilice el sobre adjunto al volante para enviar cualquier canti-

dad de donación. Todo el dinero se usa solamente en nuestra escuela, este año escolar, y paga por reuniones en la escuela, excursiones, actividades

después de la escuela, bailes, la feria del libro, y más. Recientemente, padres del PTA se reunieron en la oficina de MCPS y ayudaron a salvar nuestro labo-

ratorio de computación, enviaron testimonio a la Junta de Educación del Condado de Montgomery sobre las necesidades de financiamiento en nuestra es-

cuela y consejos de aprendizaje para ayudar a nuestros niños a enfocarse mejor en la escuela. ¿Necesita más información? Quiere ser voluntario? Mi correo
