23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection
The deaf man who is presented to the Lord in today’s gospel stands for all of us. Although we don’t realize it, many times we are deaf to God’s word; deaf to the signs of the times; deaf to his commandments; deaf to the demands of God’s love. And not just deaf. It would seem that, like the man, we have a speech impediment that prevents us from announcing the Good News; one that keeps us from carrying out our mission as prophets, a mission we received in Baptism.
If we allow the Lord to touch us as he did to the man, then our ears will be opened and our tongue loosed, and we will go around proclaiming loudly that “He has done all things well” (Mk 7:37). May that grace be ours this week.
Today we also honor our police and firefighters and remember all the victims of 9/11, and we ask the Lord to keep us in his loving care. God bless you!
Fr. Luis
Y no solo sordos.
P. Luis

The Morning Offering
THE PRIESTS [IN THE JERUSALEM TEMPLE]… offered the day to God [with the morning sacrifice]. The New Testament clearly presents Jesus as...a new high priest (see Heb 2-9), an unblemished lamb (Jn 19:36; 1 Cor 5:7)… both priest and sacrificial victim.
Yet Jesus does not exercise his priesthood alone…. We share in Christ’s priesthood because, through baptism, we share in his life….One way that Catholics exercise this priestly vocation is by praying a “Morning Offering” every day, as soon as they rise from sleep.
The Church has urged its members to make a … priestly offering every day in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass… [and] encourages the faithful to pray for the pope’s intentions, announced monthly. The text promoted by the Apostleship of Prayer has developed over the last century and a half. It is brief but theologically rich:
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of all my relatives and friends, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father.
...Our lamb has already been sacrificed. Now, in the fullness of time, we, with a simple prayer, begin to restore all things in Christ (see Eph 1:10).
Scott Hahn, Signs of Life (New York: Doubleday, 2009)
Pages 84, 85, 86, 87. Used with permission.

Getting to know the NEW saints Conozcamos a los NUEVOS santos
SAINT ANGELA DI FOLIGNO (+1309) — One of the most
famous mystics of the Church in the Middle Ages, together
with St. Catherine of Siena and St. Catherine of Genoa. In her
youth she was vain and lived a worldly life. Angela married
young and had several children. At age 35, her mother,
husband and children all died in rapid succession. In the midst
of her sorrow, Angela listened to the preaching of a Franciscan
priest and, realizing her errors, went to confession and
decided to become a Third Order Franciscan.
After going on pilgrimage to Assisi, she sold all her
possessions, distributed the money among the needy and
dedicated herself to a life of prayer and contemplation. She
had great devotion to the Passion and Death of our Lord,
cared for the sick, begged for alms to tend the needy and
received numerous visions and mystical graces.
Although she was initially venerated as a saint, in the 17th century she was declared
Blessed and her feast approved first only for the Franciscan order and later for the universal
Church. Pope Francis again included her in the canon of saints in 2013.

The Pope Speaks / Habla el Papa Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World
If we seek the holiness pleasing to God’s eyes, this text offers us one clear criterion on which we will be judged. “I was hungry and you gave
me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you
took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me” (vv. 35-36).
Holiness, then, is not about swooning in mystic rapture…. The text of Matthew 25:35-36 is “not a simple invitation to charity: it is a page of Christology which sheds a ray of light on the mystery of Christ”. In this
call to recognize him in the poor and the suffering, we see revealed the very heart of Christ, his deepest feelings and choices, which every saint
seeks to imitate.
Our Lord made it very clear that holiness cannot be understood or lived apart from these demands, for mercy is “the beating heart of the Gospel”.

AUDIO Recommendation for this week:
Holiness is Always in Season, an audio book by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Ignatius Press, 733 min. From FORMED.org The saints are our models and teachers in the ways of holiness, having strived through the same difficulties and weakness as we do. Through his many reflections on the saints, Benedict XVI shows us how each has something to teach us, as he exhorts us to be holy.

Saint of the Month:
St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina
Born Francesco Forgione, he was given the name of Pio when he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.
Padre Pio became famous for exhibiting the stigmata for most of his life. In addition, God gave him many extraordinary spiritual gifts. He lived the Franciscan spirit of poverty with detachment from self, from possessions, and from comforts. He always had a great love for the virtue of chastity, and his behavior was modest always and with all people. In his lifetime, Padre Pio reconciled thousands of men and women back to their faith.
