Board of Governors General Information President’s Letter

Dear Fellow Members,

What a wonderful time of year, a time for family and friends and a time to reflect on how fortunate each of us is. This is a time of year to appreciate the camaraderie and many close friendships each of us have developed during our time of membership.

This holiday season is also a time to say thank you; to Marty, Wendy, Linda, Joel and staff for their extraordinary efforts on behalf of our Club during the past year; to each of our Committee chairs and to each of our members who volunteered and gave to the betterment of our Club, thank you. Without your efforts our Club would be less than it is.

Our special thanks to Fran Foy and Barbara Lebel, entertainment co-chairs, for their outstanding work decorating the Club. They, in turn, have asked me to thank all the volunteers who worked long and hard putting up the decorations. When you are next in the Club, take a walk around. It is beautiful.

Don’t forget to bring a friend to dinner. Remember, the initiation fee is now $100. for the next 100 new members. Tell your friends that now is the time to join.

In closing, I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah.

Yours truly,C. Robert FoyPresident

Message from The General Manager

To all of our Members,

I would like to open my message this month with sincere thanks for the generosity shown by our members on the Night of Thanks & Giving. It was a very special evening where we honored the Club’s veterans, their guests and our troops who are serving here at home and abroad for our country. Over $25,000.00 was raised, which does not include the donations of goods that were given to our troops.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, we are gearing up for the holiday season. Some of the members, together with our staff, spent their time decorating the Club. The Club looks wonderful and I appreciate all of their hard work. On Sunday, December 9th, the Club will hold Breakfast with Santa. I know that the children and adults will have a wonderful time at this event.

The Christmas Dance will be held on Saturday, December 1st. A fun evening is planned where Tom Pitman will be entertaining the members and their guests. I hope that everyone will attend this wonderful event. I hope everyone will also attend the New Year’s Eve Candlelight Dinner which is being held at the Club this year.

The holiday season is a very busy and fun time here at the Club. I hope that all of you find the time to enjoy the season along with us. It is also a time for us to give thanks for all that we have. Please keep in your hearts and prayers the brave men and women in the armed forces who are unable to celebrate the holidays with their families.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Club.

Best Wishes,

Marty

BOOK CLUB IWe met for our monthly dinner on November 6th. We read The Light Between Oceans by M.L Stedman and most of us thought it would be a favorite read for this year. The story, writing and the characters were all compelling. Thank you, Marie Rooney, for a really good read. Our next meeting will be January 8th to review Live by Night by Dennis Lehane, chosen by Donna Sweeney. For our Christmas Charity, Ruthie Briggs recommended Interfaith Services. We all agreed and sent our checks to them via Ruthie. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of us and to all of you.

BOOK CLUB IIRachel Bartley lead a lively discussion on November’s book, Language of Flowers, a story of how the foster care system fails some of the most vulnerable. Barbara Fitzgerald reviewed the author and fourteen members enjoyed a delicious lunch. December’s book will be Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian, an intense book of fiction totally based on forgotten history. Ardis Porter suggested The President’s Club by Nancy Jibbs as optional reading. Next meeting will be December 18 when members will exchange gifts. Members are invited to dress in period costume for lunch. January’s book, Mrs. Tom Thumb by Melanie Benjamin is a charming tale that brings out the humanity in all of us.

BRIDGE Brenda Hussey is offering a beginner bridge group to Club members for $7 per session in

Braintree featuring a 1/2 hour lesson. Please call Brenda for details 781-749-4284.

Will served 27 years in the Air Force, flying B-24s out of Italy during WW II, made over 120 flights into Berlin during the blockade carrying coal and food, was commander of a radar station in Korea. He became an instrument flight instructor in Texas, a B-47 instructor in Florida and Kansas, a B-52 alert pilot in New York during the Vietnam War and staff officer before retiring in Maine.

Rita was an Air Force nurse during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Kansas and Japan, later at Westover AFB.

in Public Health Nursing from Boston University.

The living room and foyer were overflowing with an unbelievable amount of gifts and “prizes” for the silent auction. All thanks to the efforts of Carol McClintock and Ellen McWade along with Marty, Wendy, Linda and staff. A special thank you to Kathy and Sean Galvin for their donation of a large screen tv for the live auction. All for the benefit of Fisher House, which is a home away from home where our military families can stay while a loved one is receiving in house treatment at a medical centers. Any veteran or active military personnel, wartime or peacetime, is eligible to stay at the Fisher House. These homes are built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers.

Before dinner, President Bob Foy thanked the crowd in the ball room for their generosity and recognized Jack Curley and Nick Pepe, both of whom served in WWII, for their service, along with the many other service members in attendance. Bob introduced President and CEO of Fisher House, Michelle Keating, who addressed the crowd and explained what having these residences has meant to wounded soldiers and their families.

After dinner, which was a miraculous feat by Joel and staff to serve over 200 delicious hot turkey meals all at one time, we were treated to “dueling auctioneers”. Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti, along with Dan Flynn, took turns entertaining and auctioning off the live auctions items, not without a few laughs. The audience responded enthusiastically with generous bids and the evening ended as a complete success. Many thanks to all the merchants and members for their generous donations.

A New Look at Your Club!As you enter the parking lot of the Club you cannot help but notice the beautiful new white Colonial fence. This fantastic addition to the Club is a product of Michelle and Michael Glynne’s generosity and commitment to the Club.

It is members like Mike and Michelle that make the Club so special, and they are not alone. If you drive by the front of the Club, you notice the new sign and the new lighting on both the sign and the flag pole. This was a combined donation from Phyllis Godwin, Mike and Claire McNally, Jeff and Sandra Kunz and lighting by Fran White.

These new additions, along with the donated Gas fireplace and the water fountain, have the Club looking great these days. Members looking to help with capital improvements can feel free to contact Marty.

A Christmas Letter to SantaDear Santa,This year all I want for Christmas is for you to take me back in time about 45 years so I can once again experience the thrill of the sights, sounds, gaiety, and hustle and bustle of downtown Boston as it was in the 1960s.

I don’t need any money, I just need to re-wind time so I can run into S.S. Pierce to buy a few jellies or jams, walk through R. H. Stearn’s — or was it R.H. White’s? — and have a moment to stop to buy flowers from the vendor outside of the subway stop on Winter Street. I always meant to do that, but never did.

I’d also like to go to the original Windsor Button Shop on Chauncey Street to find a replacement button for my favorite coat and resist the urge to buy a new one at either Raymond’s or Conrad & Chandler’s instead. Also, having the opportunity to buy something at the Jordan Marsh basement on “Dollar Day,” or to once again see my aunt standing behind her counter selling Van Raalte lingerie would mean so much.

Please, Santa, if only for a moment if would be fun to return to the afternoon I met my girlfriends — where else but under the clock at Filene’s on the corner of Washington and Summer Streets — and once again laugh with them as heartily as we did when we invaded I.J. Fox to try on fur coats none of us could afford to buy. At the time we barely had enough money to go to the lunch counter at Kresge’s, Neisner’s or Woolworth’s for a hot dog, let alone to buy a mink. If we could do it again, I wonder if any of us could — or would want to — purchase one of those now politically incorrect fur coats.

It would be nice, too, if before Christmas Day, instead of standing outside to meet someone, I could walk into Filene’s, get on the escalator and as the scent of the perfumes on the street floor fade away, have one more chance to look down at the breathtaking view below. The twinkling white lights wrapped around shimmering garland hanging in perfect loops from the tin ceiling and the decorated Christmas trees in every counter were more beautiful than anything I’d ever

seen before or since. You were there, Santa? Do you remember that sight?

I don’t want to appear greedy, but most of all I’d love to relive the evening I met up with my steady boyfriend — now husband — on the corner of Temple Place and Washington Street. On the night in December 1965, we went down to Filene’s Basement and bought toys for our nieces and nephews. After we loaded up his car, which was parked on Temple Place in front of the branch of the First National Bank where he worked, we went up to Tremont Street and walked through the lighted Boston Common trying to decide where to have dinner. I’m a little fuzzy as to where we went, but I’m pretty sure it was either Dini’s on Tremont Street, or Cafe Marliave on Bromfield Street.

I know for certain that we didn’t go to Locke-Ober’s because, as you must remember, Santa, in those days unless Harvard won a home game against Yale, women were excluded from the main dining room. However, where we had dinner doesn’t matter because even though it was cold and snowy, we ended our evening at Bailey’s to devour ice cream and hot fudge from not only the overflowing sundae cup, but from the silver tray underneath it as well.

If you can pull any of this off, I promise I won’t leave the past without bringing home either a blueberry muffin from Jordan Marsh or a couple of the famous almond macaroon cookies baked on-site at Gilchrist’s. Further, while I’m back in time I swear to you that when I drop a coin into the slot to release the latch holding the shopping bags at the entrances to most of the stores, I’ll be nice and not naughty. As tempting as it still may be, this time around I’ll make sure my sticky fingers take only one.

Work your magic, Santa, because although I know I can go to Jordan’s Furniture to see the Enchanted Village, I’d rather take my grandchildren to its birthplace; the Jordan Marsh department store in downtown Boston.

Merry Christmas and thank you.
