Defence Department spokesman Peter Paul Galvez said the Philippines would not send back its troops to the Golan Heights “unless the situa- tion improves”. He expressed confidence the pullout would not hurt the country’s standing with the United Nations, recalling that Filipino troops had remained in the Golan Heights in 2013 even after Australian, Croatian and Japanese peacekeepers were withdrawn. “However the situation has become more volatile with increased security risk, hence the rec- ommendation and subsequent approval for repa- triation,” he said in a statement to AFP. MANILA: President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III appeals to the millionsof Filipinos to cast their votes of support for Vigan in its feat to land a slotamong the New Seven Wonder Cities in the world.

PNoy urged the people to express solidarity for a common cause ofseeking honor for the country even as he disclosed that this is a bigopportunity for the people to show the world how Filipinos unite throughcasting votes online. The quest is the same online search which awardedthe Puerto Princesa Underground River a position in the New 7 Wondersof Nature in 2012. The inclusion of the Underground River in the list hascatapulted to a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals, business opportuni-ties and employment which has placed the Philippines’ reputation as a topglobal tourist destination.

Out of 1,200 cities all over the world, Vigan was included in the top 28shortlisted in the search for New 7 Wonders - Cities. Vigan is the only nom-inated city from the Philippines.

The quest covers three phases in which Vigan now enters the secondround of nomination where the nominees will be narrowed down to 14cities in October. The second round will run from July 7 until October 7. Togive the campaign a push, GMA Network has earlier allowed the use of allits satellite stations all over the world to promote and advertise Vigan inthe online poll.

A covenant of commitment to support the campaign of Vigan in thecontest was also signed by Ilocos Sur Governor Ryan Luis V. Singson,Department of Tourism (DOT)-Region 1 Director Martin Valera, ViganParish Priest Fr. Vicente Avila, members of the media and a scholar of thecity government. Aside from Vigan, the other finalists for the prestigioussearch include Vancouver, Kyoto, Athens, Prague, Chicago, Istanbul, Ho ChiMinh, Havana, Bangkok, Casablanca, Doha, Mendoza, Quito, Mumbai,Mexico City, La Paz, Phnom Penh, Perth, Saint Pettersburg, Kuala Lumpur,London, Beirut, Reykjavk, Durban, Shenzen, Seoul, and Barcelona.

The New7Wonders Cities is the third global vote organized byNew7Wonders following the successful New7Wonders of the World andNew7Wonders of Nature campaigns. “The public is enjoined to cast theirvotes online, or through phone or SMS, to make Vigan one of the sevencities to win the title,” the Official Gazette urged on its website.

There are three ways to vote. One can vote online by logging on to theNew7Wonders website atwww.new7wonders.com/en/cities.

On the other hand, one can also vote through SMS, by typing the wordVIGAN and send to 29290777; each SMS sent will cost P2.50. Anotheroption is through voting via phone call.

If Vigan makes it to the second round it will advance to third elimi-nation round which will run from the end of the second round to

December 7. Cities are voted for by the public, and scores are reset afterevery round. A fourth class provincial city and the capital of Ilocos Sur,Vigan is proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific,Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as World Heritage Site in 1999. It is theoldest surviving Spanish colonial city in the Philippines which wasmade famous by its Spanish-era houses and the baroque cobblestonestreets. —Interaksyon, Yahoo News

Then, sasabihing ayos lang ang sitwasy-on?
