TrainingHints
WheninitiallyteachingastudentwithvisualimpairmentstousetheiPad,itiscrucialtoteachthestudenttolearnthespatiallayoutoftheiPad.Onemajoradvantageofthetouchscreentabletisthespatiallayout.Thestudentwilllearnthebasiclayoutbydragginghis/herfingeraroundthescreen.Thereareshortcutcommandstojumpquicklytothefirstorlastitemonthescreen,tojumpbycontainers,etc.Ifastudentrandomlytapsaroundthescreenorifthestudentconsistentlyflicksthroughthescreen,hewillnotbeabletotakeadvantageofthespatiallayout.
Manyeducationalappshaveeitherafullscreenlayout(suchasPages)oraone-third,two-thirdslayout(suchasMail).Besuretospecificallyteachthestudenttoidentifythegenerallayoutofeveryapp.
TheToolbar(s)alsoprovidecriticalinformationabouttheapp.MostappshaveaToolbaratthetopofthescreen(directlyundertheStatusbarand/oraToolbaratthebottomofthescreen.InappssuchasSettings,theToolbarprovidesinformationaboutwhereyouareintheappandwhatscreentheBackbuttonwilltakeyoubackto.TheToolbarmayprovideyoursettingoptions,helpbutton,and/oractionsyoucandowiththeapp.Example:IntheMailapp,theleftone-thirdisthelistofreceivedemails.TheToolbarabovethislistincludesthebackbutton“mailbox”,tellsyouwhereyoucurrentlyare“allinboxes”andtheEditbutton.TheToolbarontherighttwo-thirds-abovetheopenedemail–containsPreviousMessagebutton,NextMessagebutton,MarkMessagebutton,Movebutton,Deletebutton,Replybutton,Composebutton.

ManyschoolsandbusinesseshaveguestWi-FiaccessallowingyoutoaccessfreeInternet.Onceyouhavejoinedanopennetwork,youriPadwillautomaticallyjointhatnetworkeachtimeyouarewithinrange.Ifnonetworksautomaticallyappear,manuallyselectanetwork.SomeWi-Finetworkswillbelocked;theselockednetworksareindicatedbythelocksymbol.Youwillneedapasswordtojoinalockednetwork.
Tochooseanetwork,gotoSettings>Wi-Fi>ChooseaNetworkandcheckthedesirednetwork.Ifnecessary,typethepasswordtojoinalockednetwork.

ThereisasliderbuttonontheouteredgeoftheiPad.WhentheHomebuttonisontheright,thesliderbuttonisonthetopedge(offthescreen)ontheleftsideoftheiPad.Youcanchoosethefunctionofthisbutton:mute/unmuteallsoundsorlock/unlocktheiPad’srotation.
Ifthe“LockRotation”settingisselected,theiPaddoes/doesnotallowtheiPadtorotatebetweenportraitandlandscapemodes.StudentswithVIBmaynotholdtheiriPadflat,causingtheiPadtotilt.WhentheiPadistilted,thescreenimagemayflipupsidedown,changingthelocationofbuttonsandthespatiallayout.Moststudentswhoareblindpreferthatthescreenrotationtobelocked.WhenLockRotationisselectedandthebuttononthetopleftedgeoftheiPadismovedleftorright,theLockorUnlocksymbolappearsbrieflyonthescreenandVoiceOverwillsay,“OrientationLock/OrientationUnlock”.
Note:Someappsautomaticallylockthescreenorientation.

On-ScreenKeyboardsiOS8introducesanumberofnewoptionsfortheon-screenkeyboard.IntheUS,wetypicallyusetheQWERTYkeyboard.OtheroptionsincludeAZERTYandQWERTZkeyboardlayouts.YoucanalsogotoAddNewKeyboardandselectfromavarietyofiPadkeyboards.ThestandardkeyboardusedinUSschoolsistheEnglishQWERTYkeyboard.
Toselectthedesiredkeyboardstyle,gotoGeneral>Keyboards>Keyboards>English>QWERTY.
Duringthistraining,wewillusetheQWERTYkeyboard.
Youhavetheoptionofaddingadditionalkeyboardlanguages.Whenyouaddakeyboardlanguage,youcanquicklyswitchbetweenyournormallanguagetoyoursecondchosenlanguagebyholdingtheNextKeyboard(pictureoftheworldglobewhichislocatedtotheleftofthedictationkeyontheon-screenkeyboardandlocatedonthetoprowofmostBluetoothkeyboard).Apopupwillappearwiththeoptionstoturnon/offPredictive(wordprediction),English(US)andyoursecondchosenlanguage.ThiswillenableyoutotypeinanotherlanguageandtheiPadwillnotsaythewordsaremisspelled.Thepredictionwordswillincludewordsinyourchosenlanguage.Forexample,ifyouchooseChineseandthentype,yourwordswillappearasamixtureofEnglishandChinese;somewordsthattranslatedirectlywillbetranslatedintoChinesesymbolsandVoiceOverwillsaythosewordsinChinese.OtherwordswillstayinEnglish.Ifyouchangethelanguageagain,theprintedwords/charactersdoNOTchange–theywillstaythesameaswhenyoutypedthewords.
