The most vulnerable part of the iPad are the corners. Choose a case that protects the corners. The Bretford iPad storage carts have 3/4 of an inch between the slots, if ordering to be stored in a cart make sure that the case will fit.
Try to choose bright colors so they are easily identifiable.

Reminder - most paid apps qualify for a discount when purchased in quantities of 20 or more. Each school will want to figure out how to inventory the needs and if you are going to buy 10 you might as well by 20.
App Evaluation processes should be developed at each school for both free and paid apps. Free apps don’t require funds but they do use up space on the device. Paid apps should also be put through some type of vetting process to make sure that they are quality apps that will accomplish their intended purpose.

Once your account is set up you can purchase/redeem volume vouchers2.
There is a discount available for most apps when purchasing 20 or more at one time. Try to avoid multiple purchases of the same app at low quantities to receive the best price. If you plan to buy 10, you might as well buy 20.

After the vouchers is redeemed you can purchase app codes3.

Vouchers
Q: Are Vouchers the same as iTunes gift cards?A: No. Vouchers are similar in nature but by the Iowa Gifting law federal funds cannot be used to purchase gift cards.
Q: Can I purchase apps with my personal Apple ID?A: Yes, but not with district funds. If district/school funds are used to purchase apps redemption codes need to be applied to a district created Apple ID. (See personal vs district Apple ID section)
Q: If I have multiple devices tied to the same Apple ID can I buy only 1 copy and load it on all of the devices?A: No. You must own a license/code for each device the app is loaded on.
Q: If a paid app becomes free for a period of time can I download it?A: Yes, it must be downloaded on all Apple ID's and devices while the app is free.
Q: What if I paid for an app and now it is free or at a reduced price?A: There is no refunds or adjustments. I would suggest using the app "AppShopper" to monitor price changes in apps to get the best price.

The Apple ID is the account that is created which holds all of the information on purchases and downloads. To keep purchases and downloads separate District/School funded purchases need to be redeemed on a District/School Apple ID. The device has the capability to sign in and out of Apple ID's so that you can redeem and purchase on the same device under different Apple ID's.
Personal Apple ID's
Because the device is made to be personal we understand that staff will download personal apps. As long as they adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy and download them onto their personal Apple ID this is not a problem. To create an Apple ID you must associate it with an email, so that you can receive receipts for any purchases. We do not recommend using your district email to set up your personal Apple ID because if you would need those receipts and you leave the district you would not be able to access that email account.
District Apple ID's
District Apple ID's can be created from a Facilitator in the Volume Purchasing Program or from a generic email. Any app that is purchased by the district, either direct or indirectly (grants), needs to be redeemed while signed in with a District Apple ID.

Staff/Individual (use of both Apple ID's)
There are two ways to set up a staff device.Option 1
If you do not intend to purchase apps for staff or expect them all to have exactly the same apps at the beginning.
Allow them to set it up with their personal Apple ID from the beginning.
Option 2
Create a District/School Apple ID
If you are going to allow personalization of the iPad they will need to know how to log in and out of the AppStore with multiple Apple ID's.

Make sure to turn off automatic downloads and the iCloud.
Have staff set up the new iPads with the school Apple ID
Option 3
Create a District/School Apple IDUse 1 iPad to serve as the image of that Apple ID and set it up exactly as you would like the rest to look. (Download apps, create bookmarks and organize them into folders)Create a back up of that deviceSet Up any other devices from that back up
You can only restore 12 devices from 1 iCloud back up every 90 days. If you need to do more than that you will need to have a computer in your building loaded with iTunes and have a dedicated computer for each Apple ID.Any paid apps that are loaded on the initial image must have enough codes/licensespurchased to cover ALL of the devices it is being loaded on.
Things to ConsiderTurn off the iCloud Back Up on the devices once you have done initial set up.
Classroom - less than 12 devices
If you are going to deploy iPads in the classroom here is the recommended set up.

Turn on the restrictions (Settings App - General) and set a passcode for each device.

To install any additional apps staff will need to touch each device and enable the ability to install apps. Try to have the initial device as set up as possible to eliminate the number of times you have to touch each device's set up through out the year.
iCloud
iCloud is Apple's web based storage. Each Apple ID is allotted 5GB of memory and additional space can be purchased. 5GB should be enough for most purposed and to conserve storage turning off the iCloud after the initial back up and set up is recommended, especially if more than one device is operating on the same Apple ID.

Automatic downloads - automatically downloads a purchase (free or paid -app, music or book) onto all the other devices with that Apple ID that has the feature turned on.
If one person should download something inappropriate it will automatically be pushed to the other devices.
Proper Licensing Example - I have and personal iPad and a District issued, it is fine for me to load an app on both of those devices because I either own or control them. (Up to 5 devices)
License Violation Example - The building has 2+ iPads that are all logged in with the same Apple ID, so I purchase 1 copy of a paid app and then download it on all the rest. Each iPad must purchase their own license - which is why we need to go through the Volume Purchasing Program.
Paid apps - Apple Licensing indicates that apps can only be loaded on multiple devices if the devices are all owned or controlled by the same user.
Why should you turn this off?
If you have several iPads that are all logged into the App Store with the same Apple ID you will want to turn off the automatic downloads.
How to turn off Automatic Downloads
Access the settings
On the left scroll down to iTunes & App Stores
In the Automatic Downloads section slide to turn off
