New bloc enters BCCI election fray

Mohammed Zafran/[email protected]

Manama

Tawoon, a newly formed group, has announced its intention to run for

the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) elections to be held on March 10.

The seven members of the bloc are: Ali Hussain alhalwachi, Abbas Mohd abdulrasool, Sayed Saeed Khadim AlAlawi, Fadhel AbdulAbbas alsulaibi, Ghalib Al Shaikh Ali Aloraibi, Abdulla Abdulwahab madan and Hameed Mirza Alhelli.

An event was held at New Seasons hall in Adhari yesterday for the announcement.

Speaking to DT News on the sidelines of the event, Ali Hussain alhalwachi said that the group aims to bring a new perspective.

“We really aim to differentiate ourselves from the rest because people want to see something different. They are tired of seeing the same names every year over and over. This is the time for a change, especially when we are going through this

turbulence in terms of the economy,” he said.

“Every member of this group has been carefully selected. We come from diverse backgrounds, I come from an IT background, we have someone from real estate background, someone from the medical, some of us has dozens of companies in different industries,” he said.

When asked about the group’s strategy he said, “It is a bit early to discuss that. Today’s event was just to introduce ourselves. We will be having an event soon to announce our strategy in detail,” he said.

Bahrain’s High Criminal Court has sentenced Nabeel

Rajab to five years in prison after he was found guilty of spreading false rumours aiming to undermine the security of the Kingdom and its allies, a press release said.

Rajab faced criminal charges of promoting, misleading and providing inaccurate information about Bahrain and disseminating rumours at the time of war under Articles 133 of the Penal Code; offending a foreign country under Article 215 of the Penal Code, and insulting a statutory body under Article 216 of the Penal Code.

Rajab is currently serving a two-year prison sentence following the outcome of the second trial in July 2017, which found Rajab guilty of “disseminating false news, statements and rumours about the internal situation of the Kingdom,” under Penal Code 134.

The High Military Court of Appeals unanimously upheld and endorsed the original death sentences against the suspects over charges of attempted murder and incitement to commit murder, in addition to the 15 year sentences for other charges related to terrorist activity.

The High Military Court of Appeals upheld the verdicts to revoke the citizenship of all the convicted suspects.

Under the Criminal Procedure Code of 2002 and the Military Justice Act of 2002, all legal rights are guaranteed before the military courts.

Suspects are afforded their full legal rights, including the right to appeal the verdict at the Military Court of Cassation.

Count down begins forManama

Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) yesterday launched

the countdown for a spectacular Formula 1 2018 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which promises to be an experience you won’t want to miss.

Combining the very best of international motorsport with top-class family entertainment and major international music artists, “The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East” is once again set to be the world’s focus of attention on April 6 to 8.

Headlined by the highly anticipated 57-lap night race, the

Bahrain Grand Prix weekend marks the second of 21 rounds on this year’s FIA Formula 1 World Championship.

In a Press conference held

yesterday at the circuit in Sakhir, BIC announced a series of exciting details of Formula 1’s most colourful race weekend.

Speaking at the media event

were BIC Commercial Director Sherif Al Mahdy and Gulf Air Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications Diya Al Shakar. BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa was also in attendance.

Al Mahdy commented: “Each year, we strive to deliver an ever more exciting race weekend and 2018 will be no exception. New rules, new drivers and a revised programme for the race weekend will make the experience for fans better than ever.

“In 2017, we saw a record-breaking event, with 33,000 fans in attendance on race day and 93,000 over three days. This included a sell out

for the Main, Turn One and University Grandstands, as well the highest ever ticket sales for the Paddock Club. Given how tickets are selling so far this year, we expect similar interest, so we would urge fans to get their tickets early, to avoid disappointment.

“The slogan for our Grand Prix this year is ‘Race the

Stars’, with the long list of Formula 1’s superstar drivers set to compete under the stars of The Kingdom of Bahrain for a fifth successive night race. It is with great pride that we invite everyone to join us here at ‘The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East’ for an experience you won’t want to miss!”

This year’s Bahrain Grand Prix race will flag off at

6.10pm, 10 minutes later than its regular start time. This time adjustment was implemented by Formula 1 for all Grands Prix, with the aim of allocating more time for broadcasters to show an extended pre-race build-up.

Formula 1 has also announced changes which will mean fans can get an even closer experience of racing. The introduction of ‘Grid Kids’ will see up and coming local young drivers playing

a major role in the pre-race build up, whilst the new Formula 1 Pirelli Hot Laps programme will be launched at the Bahrain Grand Prix. This will offer a few lucky fans the chance to be driven round the track by an F1 driver. In addition, fans will also have the opportunity to join the ‘Truck Tour’ experience, parading around the circuit in open top buses during the race weekend.

All these changes are in the context of a new season of F1, which inevitably brings

changes to the teams and their set ups. McLaren has a new engine partner in Renault and there are several driver changes, including Charles Leclerc, the reigning Formula 2 champion, who is joining Sauber.

Amongst the new technical regulations, the use of a halo cockpit protection device will be the most obvious modification to the car, providing an additional safety feature for the drivers in case of an incident.

F2 and Porsche GTE Cup There will also be plenty of racing in the two support series, the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.

The Porsche GT3 Cup is the biggest and most popular one-make motor racing championship in the entire region. It has been the number one choice of the Arab world’s most promising circuit racing drivers to broaden their racing experience in a professionally run series. The series will be holding its sixth and final round of its 2017/2018 campaign.

Citing the example of how television viewing has

changed from programme tv to on-demand tv, Minister of Finance, Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, said Bahrain has to embrace, understand and implement the changes happening around. “The challenge is to stay relevant,” he said at the seventh GCC Financial Forum held yesterday.

Co-hosted by Euromoney Conferences and EDB, the event was part of the first Fintastic Bahrain Week from February 19 to 21 bringing together around 700 international and regional financial services experts to

explore disruptive innovation across the industry. The conference organized at Hotel Four Seasons were attended by financiers, economists, investors, bankers and policymakers to discuss and debate challenges and future opportunities for the global financial sector, and what how it resonated in the region.

Shaikh Ahmed spoke about how Bahrain responded to global changes by diversifying its economy much earlier than its neighbours. “It is for all of us to try and keep up,” he said in a lively conversation with Charlie Corbett, the editorial director of Euromoney Conferences. Today, more than 80 percent of the country’s GDP comes from non-oil

sectors. Earlier during the conference, the chief executive of the Economic Development Board, Khalid Al Rumaihi, said a venture capital fund worth $100 million would be established next month, to accelerate growth.

As Bahrain is looking at becoming a regional leader in financial services, industrial and manufacturing, logistics, tourism and information communications, the country is also seeing buoyant growth in infrastructure investments. Bahrain is also seeing itself as a gateway into the $1.5 trillion GCC market with free trade agreements with the US, Singapore, GCC, the pan-Arab region, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.

Bahrain communicates very well with the world market, Shaikh Ahmed said. “ We live with people from different cultures. New things are not complicated to Bahrain,” he added.

“The diversity of Bahrain allows us to the flexibility to learn from the West as well as the emerging economies of the East,” he said. He also focused on the importance of enabling laws to ease business. “ Are your laws competing with the

best out there,” he said.It was earlier reported

that the Shura Council has approved a draft bill to enable local and foreign investments in Bahrain. The financial and economic affairs committee vice-chairman Dr Abdulaziz Abul was quoted as saying that it would help draw a law that would enable long-term investments in Bahrain.

Meanwhile, in a report published last November, the Global Entrepreneurship

Development Institute (GEDI) has ranked Bahrain 34th out of 137 countries and fifth in the MENA region in facilitating small and medium industries. The report said 10% enhancement of current conditions for entrepreneurship had the potential to add $6bn to the economy. The minister also expressed confidence in how Bahrain’s is gearing toward the introduction of Value Added Tax later this year.

The challenge is to stay relevant: FM

Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. A b d u l h u s s a i n Mirza, accom-panied by Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) Chief Executive Officer Shaikh Nawaf bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa and officials of the Sustainable Energy Unit, vis-ited the renew-able energy pilot project being set up in Southern Bahrain. The plant will produce three megawatts of solar energy and two megawatts of wind energy. The project comes in line with the National Plan for Renewable Energy approved by the government. This looks at five per cent of the total energy consump-tion in Bahrain being renew-able by 2025. The minister said this would be the first time wind energy is used in this way in Bahrain.

VIVA and UAE Exchange jointed hands allowing VIVA customers the oppor-tunity to complete TRA’s mandatory SIM-card registration at UAE Exchange branches across the country.

Register nowFrom July 2017, Bahrain’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has implemented its SIM Card Enabled Telecommunications Services Registration Regulation. This requires telecom service providers to cover registration and verification of user data and identity, including the imple-mentation of a biometric verification process.

to see the benefits of boosting capital vis-a-vis the issuance of such Basel 3-compliant hybrid instruments as a viable long-term capital raising alternative.”

Dubai

A wave of buying in beaten down blue-chip stock

Emaar Properties boosted the Dubai market yesterday while most of the region traded quietly in modest volumes.

Dubai’s index firmed by 0.5 per cent, but remains the Gulf’s worst-performing index this year with a decline of 2.5pc, partly because of a sustained slump in the emirate’s real estate market.

However, the bourse was lifted on Wednesday as Emaar, which had been trading near 14-month lows, surged by 3.2pc to 6.22 dirhams in its heaviest volume this year. It is still down nearly 5pc since the start of the year.

The increase in volume suggested that some funds were buying back stock on valuation grounds. It had

reached a trailing price-earnings ratio of about 7.6 times, according to Thomson Reuters data. That is not expensive by the standards of several Asian markets, where real estate stocks are at multiples of 9-12 times earnings.

Of 12 analysts rating Emaar Properties, 10 have a “buy” or “strong buy” rating and none have a “sell”, Thomson Reuters data shows. Their median target for the stock is 9.45 dirhams.

The Saudi Arabia index was flat in its lowest volumes this year. Najran Cement fell 3.8pc after it swung to an annual net loss of 21.9 million riyals ($5.8 million) from a profit of 125.7 million riyals.

But Saudi Investment Bank added 1.7pc after reporting a 16pc rise in fourth-quarter net profit to 352 million

riyals. NCB Capital had forecast 301 million riyals and EFG Hermes 302 million riyals.

Egypt’s blue-chip index edged up 0.2pc. QNB Alahly surged 2.4pc as 13.6 million shares changed hands, the biggest volume since 2005.

The bank’s parent, Qatar National Bank, said this week that it would sell a 2.125pc stake in QNB Alahly to comply with Cairo listing rules on free floats. The bank has slightly more than 890 million shares outstanding. (Reuters)

[email protected] takes

considerable knowledge just

to realize the extent of your

own ignorance. -Thomas Sowell

It all started when I was coming back from playing

football. While passing through a place, suddenly I slipped and fell into a hole, at the end I reached a lab. There were a lot of machines. Suddenly, an explosive sound broke the silence. I went inside to see what happened. I saw a man working on a machine. That man asked me, “What are you doing here? How did you come here?” That man had a lot of questions. Then I stopped him and asked him, “What is this place?” He told me that it was a laboratory. I was very excited to hear and started exploring the place, and also few machines. Then I tripped on a can and I fell inside of a machine. I clicked some button and the machine started moving round and round, taking turns and suddenly stopped. As I did not understand much about it, I went out of the door and was completely surprised to see the whole place around me. My eyelids flickered; I was completely shocked to see that the whole place had changed. I winked and tried to look at everything clearly but what I saw was that there were different cars, I could not see the ground. Then from someone, I came to know that the year was 2068. I had understood that the machine was a time machine and I came 50 years ahead. I freaked out. Then I felt very hungry, I went in search of food and found a hotel luckily. I had some money but the man in the hotel could not accept it for the currency was so old. Then I ran back to the time machine and started clicking random buttons, the machine started moving round and round and it stopped when I went out of the door. I came back to the same laboratory, the place from where I set off. Then that man asked me, “Where were you all this time?” I told him, “I went on a ride in the time machine.” Then he was quite confused to get the answer, as he tried out a lot many times, but the machine did not respond. “What!! The time machine works! Is it?” But I did not continue with other details, rather gave a grin and left the place.

Thank you

Bahrain to host international Higher Education Summit The 8th QS MAPLE, Middle

East and Africa’s Annual Strategic Summit for the Advancement of University Excellence in all its forms, will be held in Bahrain from March 4 to 6. The Higher Education Summit will host over 300 delegates and exhibitors from over 45 countries for 3 full days at the Gulf Hotel.

The University of Bahrain as a strategic partner of the conference will host the gala dinner at the UOB campus on the 4th of March. This is the first time that QS who are one of the most respected university rankings organisations are

holding the event in Bahrain. The summit signifies a clear

shift towards Bahrain being

viewed as an education hub within the region and further. With delegates, attending from USA, Europe, Africa and Asia it is also the biggest and most international higher education conference ever held in Bahrain, which also represents a boost for local hotels.

University of Bahrain President Prof Riyad Hamzah said, “The QS summit being hosted in Bahrain is a major coup and represents the strides that UOB has taken recently to gain a wider international reputation and to improve both academically and in research terms. The

summit gives Bahrain a great opportunity to showcase both the country and the higher education sector, UOB is delighted to be the strategic partner for this conference and we also expect the economic impact to be significant”

This is the first of three major events being led by UOB, In April the university will host a research symposium with partners that include Oxford, Aston and Loughborough universities. In May, UOB is also hosting an international conference on Sustainability.

Chris Evans, who plays Captain America in Marvel Cinematic

Universe, has hinted at the possibility of a film based on the character of ‘Black Widow’.

Scarlett Johansson portrays the role of Black Widow aka

Natasha Romanoff in the MCU and last year Jac Schaeffer was hired by the studio to pen the script for the character’s solo film.

Speaking to media about Marvel’s latest superhero entry ‘Black Panther’ and its success, Evans said, “There’s nothing (Marvel Studios) can’t do. And I’m sure it’s gonna have the exact same effect when ‘Captain Marvel’ comes out, and then the Black Widow movie comes out.”

“Marvel just has the winning recipe and they’re kind of one step ahead of everybody else,” he added. (PTI)

No sooner do you set foot in the office this morning than you begin to get pelted from all directions with various crises and problems. It isn’t a very welcome reception. A hot cup of coffee and a warm greeting from your co-workers would be a much nicer way to start the day. Take it all in stride.

Today will be a lovely combination of harmony and passion. Make the most of it. With things running so smoothly at work, there’s no reason you can’t leave the office early to prepare for a special evening with your partner. Pull out all the stops tonight. Scented candles, a fabulous meal, and an even more fabulous outfit. Have a rich, gooey dessert on hand.

Your efforts on the domestic front have certainly paid off. Your home is looking wonderful. Everyone who enters says so. Some unexpected visitors may stop by for a quick hello and wind up staying for dinner. You are a natural, gracious host, not to mention a great cook. Who can blame your guests for wanting to stay? Your neighbourhood is changing, and the change is all for the better. Wonderful new neighbours may have moved in, or perhaps a small gourmet take-out shop has just opened up. It all adds to the sense of warmth and community of your town. You spend a good part of the day among your neighbours, encountering them wherever you go.

Financial prosperity is just around the corner, especially with your recently acquired money-management skills. It’s likely that you’ll receive a windfall in the near future, although it may not seem like a windfall to you, since you’ve been expecting this money for a long time now. Use your new abilities to invest it wisely.

The significant other in your life needs your support not a lecture right now. Let him or her know you’re available to listen and help in any way, but don’t smother your partner with kindness. He or she will come to you when ready. In the meantime, take care of your physical needs. If your body craves exercise, why not increase your jogging miles or add extra time to your gym workout?

Today is the final push to complete a very big project you’ve likely been working on for some time now. Even though your name won’t be on the cover of the book or business proposal, you’re gratified to have played such a significant role in its completion. Be sure to have a nutritious breakfast and lunch, because you’re likely to work right through dinner.

A pleasant outing could get delayed or cancelled due to an event entirely out of your control. Rather than having a fit, you and your friends could seize the opportunity to do something completely wild and different. For example, you could take in a matinee of the scariest movie in town or finally try out that Ethiopian restaurant you’ve been hearing so much about.

There’s going to be so much to get done today that you might feel a little daunted about getting started. By midday you could even find yourself downright overwhelmed. Take a break. Take a long lunch on an outside terrace. Breathe deeply until the stress subsides. You may need to concentrate on finishing only one or two minor tasks today and put the rest off until tomorrow.

There’s no question about it, you’ve been working hard these last few weeks. As an approaching deadline looms, you may find yourself waking up at night, running numbers through your head, and mentally rewriting project proposals. It’s exhausting, to be sure, but know that the end result will make all this aggravation worthwhile.

Today, or rather tonight, is for romance and cozy intimacy. You pull out all the stops for your evening with that special someone. Scented candles, your best perfume, and your most sensuous clothing work to enchant the person who is already head over heels in love with you. Your relationship is clicking along just beautifully right now. Why not celebrate in some special way?

Some interesting moneymaking opportunities are likely to come your way, either today or in the near future. It could be that it’s time for a new job, one that promises faster progress through the ranks and more financial stability. Once you get past a certain age, working on commission loses its appeal. You’re ready for steady growth in your portfolio.

There aren’t many writer-directors who could tell

a story of small-town rape, murder, grief and guilt at the same time as taking you down all sorts of black-comic paths and having immense fun with the writing and acting along the way. But Martin McDonagh (‘In Bruges’, ‘Seven Psychopaths’) is one of them, and his bloody and ballsy third film, ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, takes his work to a new level of versatility and surprise..

It’s almost a year since Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand, on absolutely roaring form) lost her teen daughter to an unknown rapist and murderer. She’s angry, as well as distraught, and she pays for a series of disused billboards outside her town to carry huge posters asking why no one has been arrested yet. She points the finger at Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), simply because he’s the sheriff, and that makes her public enemy

number one. Everyone takes against

her, from her abusive and philandering former husband (John Hawkes) to a rash and racist hothead young cop, Dixon (Sam Rockwell, a blinding performance, brilliantly comic, but so much more). Even the priest sits her down for a chat. But she’s having none of it: she just becomes more determined to fight anyone who gets in her way. (timeout)

The Philippines asked a court to declare the

communist party and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), a terrorist organisation, dashing already faint hopes of a recovery in a tattered peace process.

The petition before a Manila regional trial court seeks to formally terminate peace talks with Maoist rebels, a week after a Norwegian diplomat met President Rodrigo Duterte to try to convince him to restart negotiations that Duterte had scrapped in anger at what he considers duplicity by

the communists.The Philippines has a

state policy to not negotiate with any group defined as terrorists, like the Abu Sayyaf militants behind extremism, kidnapping, banditry and piracy. The United States has since early 2000s listed Abu Sayyaf and the NPA as terrorist organisations.

State Prosecutor Peter Ong said the rebels are “merely buying time by deceiving the Philippine government in entering into peace talks” because their main agenda was to overthrow the duly constituted authorities. (Reuters)

Fears grew in northeast Nigeria yesterday about

the fate of potentially scores of girls who have not been seen since a Boko Haram attack on their school two days ago.

Militants stormed the Government Girls Science Secondary School in Dapchi, Yobe state, on Monday evening. Locals initially said the girls and their teachers

fled the attack.The jihadists gained

worldwide notoriety in April 2014 when they abducted 276 girls from their school in Chibok, in neighbouring Borno state. A total of 112 are still being held.

Monday’s incident sparked fears of a repeat and yesterday morning some 50 parents and guardians gathered at the school demanding information. (AFP)

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is not

an autocrat and is taking seriously a report by the U.S. intelligence community that names the firebrand leader among the threats to democracy in Southeast Asia, his spokesman said yesterday.

The report, produced by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, places Duterte alongside Cambodia’s Hun Sen, the Rohingya crisis and Thailand’s military-backed constitution as impediments

to democracy.“We view this declaration

from no less than the intelligence department of the United States with some concern,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque told DZMM radio.

Democracy and human rights in many Southeast Asian nations will remain fragile in 2018 because of autocratic tendencies, rampant corruption and cronyism, the U.S. intelligence community said in its Worldwide Threat Assessment report of Feb. 13. (Reuters)

Tallahassee/Parkland, Fla.

Student activists from the Florida high school

where 17 teens and staff were shot and killed began a march to the state capital of Tallahassee on Wednesday, where they were to meet with lawmakers to call for a ban on assault-style weapons.

The latest in a series of deadly shootings in schools in the United States has inflamed the long-running national debate about gun rights. The students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, have emerged as the new faces of the gun-control movement.

“We’re here to ask for change and we’re confident change will happen,” said Noah Kaufman, 16. “We know the issues, and we know who is with us and who isn‘t.”

Nikolas Cruz, 19, a former student expelled from Douglas for disciplinary problems, is charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder in the second deadliest shooting at a U.S. public school. He was armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 assault-style rifle he legally purchased from a licensed gun dealer last year when he was 18, authorities said.

Carrying signs bearing the #NeverAgain slogan, about 100 students from Douglas walked to Florida’s capital, where the Republican-controlled legislature on Tuesday rebuffed a bid to bring up a bill to block sales of assault-style rifles.

But signalling a possible shift, state Senator Bill Galvan, slated to be the chamber’s next president,

called for a bill to raise the legal age for purchasing assault rifles from 18 to 21, the same as it is for handguns. The legislature’s current session ends on March 9, leaving little time for a vote.

U.S. President Donald Trump, a strong supporter of gun rights, was scheduled to host a “listening session” with high school students and teachers at the White House on Wednesday.

“This isn’t a Democrat or Republican issue, it’s a life issue,” said Kaufman. Many in the group said they had stayed up all night researching legislation and writing speeches.

Calls for national student walk-outs and marches in the coming months gained steam on social media, including the “March for Our Lives”

on March 24 in Washington, spearheaded by some Douglas students.

Cameron Kasky, a Douglas student and an organizer of the Washington rally, created a GofundMe page that as of Wednesday had raised about $1.2 million toward a goal of $1.5 million.

“The march on Washington is going to be huge but the marches all over are just

The youth-led protest movement that erupted within hours of the shooting attracted prominent celebrity supporters on Tuesday. Film star George Clooney, Hollywood director Steven Spielberg and media mogul Oprah Winfrey each contributed $500,000 to help fund the March rally in Washington. (Reuters)

Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) came out

on top on stage 1 of the Abu Dhabi Tour. The European road champion came off Caleb Ewan’s (Mitchelton-Scott) wheel in the final 100 metres and held off a late challenge

from Andrea Guardini (Bardiani CSF).

Ewan looked to have the win in the bag but faded to third on the stage.

Kristoff looked out of it with 200m to go but jumped from behind Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin) onto

Ewan’s tail before powering to the line. Despite a headwind, the Norwegian had enough in the tank to take the win by a clear margin.

Kittel, who came into the race without a win so far this season, looked well-placed but was crowded out in the sprint

and went backwards as the rest of the fast-men opened up towards the line.

Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) crashed out of the race in the neutralized zone, suffering concussion and whiplash. The British sprinter remounted and carried on for

the opening few kilometres before pulling out of the race.

Kristoff, who also won the final stage of the Tour of Oman, leads the race going into stage 2.

“In the final I lost my rhythm and I lost [lead-out man Robertro] Ferrari, but

then I found Caleb Ewan in the end and I know he’s fast,” Kristoff said at the finish. “He started to really go for the sprint but I was in the draft and then managed to come round and hold on in the headwind all the way to the line. (Cyclingnews)

T20: South Africa crush India by six wicketsCenturion

A blistering 30-ball 69 from Heinrich Klaasen and a measured

40-ball 64* from captain JP Duminy helped South Africa hunt down 189 as they beat India by six wickets in Centurion to draw level at 1-1 in the three-match series yesterday night.

Yuzvendra Chahal had a nightmare of a game as he bowled four wicketless

overs for 64 runs – the most expensive spell by an Indian bowler - with Klaasen smoking five of his seven sixes off the leggie. It was his maiden T20I fifty in just his second game. Duminy, who finished the chase in style with back-to-back sixes and eight balls remaining, was a bit measured, taking quick singles to give strike to the on-song Klaasen. (TOI)

P23 Wheeler to make debut at Brave 10

gives Barca draw

Messi goalLondon

Lionel Messi broke his goal duck against Chelsea to deny Antonio Conte’s side a crucial lead over Barcelona in their Champions League showdown. The Argentina international superstar had not scored in his previous eight

meetings against the Blues, but he put that anomaly right with 15 minutes left to secure a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had gone ahead through Willian, who had earlier been twice denied by a post. But Blues boss Conte, who revealed he had experienced

trouble sleeping ahead of the match, will be having nightmares about the equaliser with his side unable to hold on for a crucial advantage to take to the Nou Camp for the second leg in three weeks.

The showdown between the current English title holders and Spain’s champions-elect was also billed as Messi against Eden Hazard, with the two illustrious No. 10s facing each other for the first

time at club level.Hazard, spearheading the Chelsea attack with Willian and Pedro

tucked in behind, certainly looked in the mood to show he deserves to be mentioned in such exalted company and fizzed an early 25-yard drive narrowly high and wide.

But it was Messi who eventually came out on top.Messi was also looking menacing in the opening stages, with one

sudden burst of acceleration leaving N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas and Antonio Rudiger grasping at thin air.

The 30-year-old then collected Andres Iniesta’s pass on the corner of the area and chipped an inviting ball onto the head of Paulinho, who should

have done far better than nod tamely across goal and wide.In fact Messi’s mere presence was giving Chelsea’s defence the jitters -- Andreas Christensen passed straight into touch to give

away the cheapest of corners and Thibaut Courtois was lucky to get away with a mis-hit clearance.

Barcelona’s possession stats were touching the 80 percent m a r k during the first half an hour, but crucially they had not tested Courtois. Chelsea, meanwhile, earned some respite when Ivan Rakitic was booked as he tripped a rampaging Willian, with Marcos Alonso’s free kick held by Marc-Andre ter Stegen. (PA Sport)
