Sumner’s TPEP Journey: Artifacts and Student Growth

Overview of Sumner’s Timeline

• Convened Guiding Team March ‘12• Selected Danielson for Teaching June ‘12• Began Pilot Aug. ‘12• Summative Training next week

Big Idea: We Want Growth Process in the Big Font

Guiding Team

• Whole Team: Decisions about Transition• Subcommittees:– Artifacts– Student Growth– Training– Logistics/Contracts

Artifacts• Artifacts: Guiding principles–Key artifacts collected by all (standardized)–Choice artifacts with parameters–Non-artifact evidence included–Teacher reflection and analysis of artifacts

IS evidence and is the key to the process

Artifact Guide

Artifact Guide

• 8 Required Pieces (high leverage)• 5 Choice Pieces (esp. 4C Communicating

with Families)• Includes Student Growth artifact

Non-Artifact Evidence for 4b-4e

Student Growth: Goals

• All on Comprehensive set 4 SMART goals based on data and self-assessment in Sept.– 1 Component goal (ex. 3b Questioning Techniques)– 3 Student Growth Goals (think nested dolls)• PLC Goal (Criteria 8)

– Whole Class Goal (Criteria 6)» Subgroup Goal (Criteria 3)

Lessons Learned

• Give more guidance, more models on goals• Defining what we mean by terms like “whole

class growth.” • More training/time on goal setting, planning

for assessments/data collection and analysis

Training Matrix Process Growth Calibration

Teachers and Evaluators together

Unpacking the Frameworks,

Teachscape

Constantly changing, improving; flexibility required

Reflection, Self Assessment,

Evaluator PLC – Collaborative Analysis of Teacher Evals

Everyone contributes to the process

Learning Walks, Learning Centered Conferences

Teachers into other teacher’s classroom, collaboratively analyzing practice on Frameworks

Overall Successes

• The pilot process has helped us develop the process that we believe will work for the rest

• Teachers are seeing examples of how the framework can change thinking about teaching and ramp up performance

• Everyone is seeing how the Framework can anchor all of the change initiatives

Biggest Challenges• Constant tension between the professional

growth vs process/accountability

• Transition rate (how much, how fast)

• Relevance for all certs; all levels/subjects

• Training: When? What? Who? How?
