N°21
FUORI!
We have started from the outside, from that spectacleof virtual eccentrics who dress up to the nines andhang purposefully round the entrance to the fashion
shows to take photographs but more especially to be photogra-phed/videoed/twittered themselves in a sort of game of two wayonanism. This game, which has made a few bloggers famous
in the past, is not funny anymore. On the contrary, ithas become almost unbearable. It is a show of akind in which it is hard to see anything worthwhile. So the first page of this Catwalks, Waiting for theShow, is indeed dedicated to the creative spontaneityof the guests waiting to enter the shows but to thosewho, to us at least, appear to be elegant. In the sameway it is right to observe what happens in the streetbecause that is often closer to the communal senseof fashion than the catwalks. It is also our duty torecord reality and not only the exceptions for a
“strange but true” category. In the desire to add colour to ma-gazines, there is a risk of passing on the idea that the world offashion, and fashion itself, consists only of a few posing carica-ture-like models. When it is not like that at all.
N°21With this same sense of positivity and coherence, loudlydemanded in this time of economic crisis, we have chosenthe most representative photos of the shows, payingequal attention to innovation and disenchantment withcertain classic names and disregarding excessive extra-vagance without hesitation. In the past, too many showshave consisted of clothes corresponding in no way to therealities of the market: aimed only at looking good in themagazines. So that fashion has formed a spiral arounditself, a dialogue in code contained within the industryitself that has paradoxically excluded the consumer, itsprime source of life, which powers the joyful motor ofstyle. So good luck to Alessandro Dell’Acqua’s N° 21collection, a perfect balance of product and creativity.Good reason why this brand “number” has become thelogo on the sweatshirt all the It girls are wearing insupport of this designer. He is much cleverer than youthink (even Stefano Gabbana asserted it).
DE VINCENZO AND PUGLISIAnd a space for young talents again such as Marco DeVincenzo and Fausto Puglisi, the two aces up the sleeveof the Made in Italy label, now more than just emerging. Finally praise to Dolce & Gabbana who have achieved aperfect balance between product (women’s suits in men’sfabrics) and theatre (mosaic clothes and crowns). Asalready reported in the fashion press, Giorgio Armaniwas annoyed by the amount of coverage given in thepress to this, certainly not prêt-à-porter, headgear. Hesaid (and we completely agree) “The press should describewhat people see and can buy in the shops”. But this wasthe same at the Dolce & Gabbana show and they wereable to merge dream with reality, the sacred with theprofane, having the proverbial cake and eating it. Andthen - said from the heart and with the deepest respect -why, dear Mr Armani, every season, must you polemicizewith your colleagues/competitors? You are and continueto be the undisputed king of Italian style. Please behavelike a sovereign. Italian fashion needs that as well.

WITHOUT DEPTHFlounces, ribs, and macro-plissé: imagine the most daringconstructions in every point of the silhouette, from shouldersto the skirt. Then iron and flatten them in a triumph of two-di-mensionality. You will have an idea of Bottega Veneta: much, perhaps too much similar to the flat collection by Comme desGarçons. In order to enhance this play without depth, thebags are framed by metallic zips. Wonderful as usual.

WEAVING MOSAICS As well as an Italian postcard illustrating Sicily’s cultural heritage, each item in this collection, dedicated to the mosaics of Monreale(Palermo) and covered in gold and treasures, is also a celebrationof sartorial craftsmanship, of the manual dexterity and patiencewith which Dolce & Gabbana construct every garment, stitch bystitch. Or, if you like, mosaic tile by mosaic tile. The breath-taking start of the show was with a succession of these sacredmasterpieces culminating in a corset reproducing a bust ofSaint Agatha. And as if that were not enough the models worecrowns as seen on statues of the Madonna. While on their feet, they wore high heels with metal netting from which sproutedreal flowers. As in the saints’ bells.
THE CHERRY ON THE CAKEFrom the after-life to real life and to the sound track Fellini’s Lastrada fantastic coats and three piece suits in men’s suiting, with slightly goblet shaped below the knee skirts co-ordinatedT-shirts descending beneath micro jackets, appeared on thecatwalk. Where the first part of the show more than satisfied itsobjectives, paradoxically the second part was preferred by thefashion critics, because it was real fashion that will be seen inthe shops and worn in the streets. And who knows how much. The show was so packaged to have a double centre in bothimage and substance. With the grand finale in red, in cherry red.

A punk comb in fox: the first look unveils immediately the un-conventional spirit of the new and extraordinary Fendi’s furs. The furs are shaved, depilated, coloured with acid nuances,inset... Whilst leather or pony skin is cut in fringes to imitateanimal’s skins. The creativity is on show, so that the fur coat isn’tany more the grandma’s coat and the sable fur the rich woman’sstatus symbol. And so on, towards a transgenic style. A rain ofaccessories rushes into the longer catwalk of Milano ModaDonna, among which the new saddler bags, where the numberof points necessary for their construction is written, Adele 1,328,Anna 1,322, Peekaboo 1,584. For the evening, the 3-D playcontinues and the bolero becomes a jacket with petals that, asa divine paradox, reproduces in fur the fur effect of fabrics.

ILLUMINATED MIDDLE CLASSWhat is more boring than the style of certain middle class inthe Seventies with camelhair coats, grey trousers and thinscarf? Alessandro Dell’Acqua starts from here for his N°21collection. However, revisiting everything with small andsuccessful details: from the gold-sequined pullovers to theones with crystal patterns combined with the thigh’s embroideries. Some small coups-de-théâtre such as the gold coloured she-arling. In addition, in the evening, calf-length skirts with glassdrops that in the pass decorated the small pullovers of the en-trepreneur’s wives. Everything is new, but everything is familiarand wearable. A perfect mix between product and creativity.

STILL CARPETTra bianchi, neri e colori al neon, l’effetto dellasfilata è dirompente. A immagine e somiglianza diDonatella, fortissima, quanto sensibile.
“How will a rebel from the English Seventiesmovement dress today?”. Donatella Versaceanswers on her catwalk, titled with the acronymV-unk, where V means Versace, to the answershe asked herself. So vinyl, studs and jewel nailstriumph. These last over both shoulder strapsand rings can be considered the lucky heirs ofthe Nineties brooches by Gianni that havebecome an icon due to the dress worn by LizHurley appeared with Hugh Grant on the redcarpet during the Oscar Academy Awards 1994.
Among black, white and neon colours, theimpact of the show is disruptive. But againstwhom will the Donatella's woman rebel?“Against the system that puts women in thebackground”. However, her hyper-woman isalready in the foreground under the lights of astill carpet. Indeed, this is the ideal contest ofVersace's heavy ladies. But the men must payattention to be seized by these steel creatures:dangerous, perhaps to protect their innerfragility. In Donatella's likeness: as muchstrong as sensible.

LACKING IN CONSISTENCYIt’s easier said than done; that’s right for Calvin Klein too.Despite the collection’s designer Francisco Costa explainsthat he took inspiration from the orphan of the film Ivan’schildhood by Russian Director Tarkovskij, he presented analmost fetish collection with much leather. Even for theevening. The dresses seem apparently rigid like theoveralls that protect from x-rays.

Dieci e lode, Donna.
PRISE TO DONNA The designer, who put the initials of New York in her secondline DKNY, expresses in the best and most complete way theconcept of American ready-to-wear: a perfect balance betweeninnovation and its sustainability, without useless eccentricity.Indeed, here is the perfect simplicity of poncho-shaped ou-terwear in jersey layers over the leotards – the Donna’s keyitems. If the simple sheath is renewed by insets in astonishingmaterials, from satin to leather, the evening is constructedwith proportions of veiled bodysuits sculptured also in fabulouscorsets in leather strips. Praise to Donna.

“COME HOME TO ROOST”The news is that Marc Jacobs didn’t take inspiration, asusual, from the Prada’s collection, but from the one of lastsummer with the true and false fox renards appliquéd inthe most different ways. The other key pieces should bethe pyjama dresses; indeed, the designer walked downthe catwalk with his own nightgown. Do you rememberDolce&Gabbana men’s collection from some years ago? However, Marc was bravissimo to serve the shake. Evenif not everybody drank it. Someone said, “Come homeand roost”.
