Imports work with each client, offering individualized concierge service and a vast knowledge of pedigrees, breeders, the import process, and equine sport. Their dedication to excellence has paid off, and Elite Equine Import horses have consistently achieved success at the elite level in both dressage and show jumping. Chico’s Girl (by Chico’s Boy) was imported in 2012. That same year, she took top honors over fences in a highly competitive field at Devon with Schuyler Riley aboard, winning the 8-Year-Old Jumper division. Elite Equine Imports’ horses also continue to dominate in the dressage ring. Umbra V/D Eland Hoev, a supremely talented 16.1 hand 2001 KWPN gelding, showed successfully at the ZZK level in Holland before being imported in January 2012. Shown in the States by a 14-year-old, he scored consistently in the 70s, including winning the 2012 Children of the Americas Dressage Invitational (CADI) and reserve junior champion at the New England Dressage Association (NEDA) Fall Festival.

Michael Meller is a well-respected East Coast trainer, whose clients range from beginners to Grand Prix champions. He has been the managing director of the jumping division at Elite

Equine Imports for a year. He says, “We scout for quality horses, whether they’re young pros-pects or proven show horses, to make sure our clients get the best fit for their ability and their goals. We have horses for sale at all times, and we will also work with a client looking to help him or her find the right horse. Working with Kathy is a pleasure, because she truly cares about the horses and wants the best for them, and she has a high level of integrity.”

Kathy takes personal interest in each Elite Equine Import horse, following his or her accomplishments with pride. She says, “I enjoy hearing back from satisfied owners who are making their dreams come true with horses we have found for them. It’s a great feeling to be part of that success.” Their show record

speaks for itself, with Elite Equine Imports horses winning consistently, year after year, in dressage and show jumping competition. Two hundred and twenty-six horses were entered in the first Pennsylvania

National Horse Show that was held at the

Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in 1946.

Representatives of 50 horse shows met on January 20, 1917, under the leadership of Reginald C. Vanderbilt, in New York City to bring together the horsemen to maintain clean competition and fair play in the competition ring. The first annual meeting of the Association of American Horse Shows was held on January 29, 1918.

Since 1896, the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair has pro-moted horsemanship and horse breeding for conformation, speed, and performance. Devon is the oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed horse competition in the United States.

For many equine enthusiasts, the start of spring indicates the begin-ning of a new competition season—whether it’s for hunter/jumper, dressage, western, or even trail riders, there are a number of

events available. For the average equestrian, these events can be a great experience, either giving the beginner rider confidence, or allowing the professional athlete to add more ribbons to his or her resume. But even if you’re a top rider, that doesn’t mean that you should throw caution to the wind while preparing for your next event.

Despite horse show management’s best efforts to protect their competitors, a number of equine enthusiasts are victims of vandalism while attending competitions. Two avid equestrians within the industry shared their stories of how they were affected by vandalism; Kathy Meyer from the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) also weighed in with her expertise on this hot topic, addressing how competitors can be proactive to ensure that this type of defacement doesn’t happen to them.

Scandal on the Show SceneVicky Castegren is like many horse show competitors in the jumper world. The owner of Hyperion Stud, LLC, based in Barboursville, VA, breeds sport horses and markets them to potential buyers by bringing them to “A” rated shows throughout the East Coast. In her 18 years of taking horses to competitions, she never had a problem with vandalism…until the morning of June 17, 2012. While preparing to load her horses onto the trailer to leave a show in Lexington, KY, Vicky was astounded when she returned to the stabling area to find one of her stallions’ tails cut off in five different places.

“We were all very surprised,” Vicky recalls. “Unfortunately, this is not uncommon, and not just in the jumper circuit, but we’re not sure what the motivation of it was. He did well at the show, but he wasn’t one of the top horses at the barn, which is what made it even more surprising.” Additionally, the pieces of the horse’s tail that had been cut off weren’t missing—they were found lying at the bottom of the stall.

Vicky immediately notified horse show management after returning home; she also both called and sent a letter to the USEF. However, she did not file a police report. “Horse show management didn’t come back to us with anything that was concrete about it, and USEF didn’t really do anything, either,” she says. “But the thing is, they may not even know what to do—I mean what can you do? And we didn’t file a police report, because what were they going to do about it?”

Although the USEF does not have any rules or regulations in place or assume responsibility of vandalism at USEF-licensed venues, people who have been victims of any type of defacement—whether their stallion’s tail has been cut off, their horse was

drugged by a stranger, or their horse’s feed was tampered with—can file a report with the Federation. “Ultimately, it would be the venue’s responsibility to set up security require-ments or standards, because that’s where the liability exists,” states Kathy Meyer, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications at USEF. “To my knowl-edge, we have not had a request for the USEF to impose a rule on horse shows regarding vandalism.

“The rule making process would mean that it would come through our affil-iate associations and/or competition managers requesting that we create such rules and regulations. But the doors are always open to any indi-vidual member of the Federation to submit a proposed change to the rules to cover something like that.”

Unfortunately, there is always a flip side to enforcing increased rules and regulations at horse shows. According to Kathy, the only competi-tions where there is strictly enforced security is at FEI level competitions, with stabling areas fenced off from unauthorized personnel. “That does put on an additional layer of expense to the competition, which is always passed on to the exhibitor,” she says, adding, “I think that the USEF hears more complaints about what the Federation will do to make the sport more affordable and accessible. If we were to impose a requirement where every show had seamless 24-hour secu-rity, competition managers would be saying that it’s not applicable and an unnecessary expense at their venue or facility. If it became a requirement of licensing, you’d see people not wanting to acquire a USEF license because they wouldn’t want to incur that addi-tional expense.”

As an amateur competitor on the

Morgan show scene, Jo Ann Bush also fell victim to vandalism, while attending a competition at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA. Her story is similar to Vicky’s, as her daughter had gone to check on her horse early in the morning, and found a soda cup in his water bucket. Upon further investigation and going into the tack stall, she found fast food wrap-pers flung throughout the area and equipment strewn about.

“That made me really angry,” says Jo Ann. “If you want to fuss with my tack, that’s one thing, but don’t mess with my horse.” She immediately went to the show office, and reported the incident. Although she states she has a good idea of who committed this crime, without proof, nothing could be done. “You very rarely find out who it is,” Jo Ann observes. “You may have a good idea, but what can you say?”

Proceed with CautionClose to a year later, Vicky still has no leads as to who cut off her horse’s tail. The stallion that had been a victim of this crime has since been sold. Despite his change of ownership, Vicky now takes much more caution when bringing her horses to shows. Since the June 17 incident, Vicky purchased video monitoring systems

Vicky Castegren was » a victim of vandalism when somebody broke into her horse’s stall and cut off his tail in five different areas.

to help surveil her horses' stalls while she’s away from the show grounds.

Additionally, she does not put nameplates on her horses’ stalls while she’s on the road. “I don’t want people to know who they are,” she says. “I don’t need to go put a big, flashy sign outside of my horse’s stall and say, ‘Here’s my top jumping horse.’”

For amateur riders who are often competing on their own, Jo Ann recom-mends creating a network of other amateur riders that you know, and with whom you can stable. “Also, if you know a professional that you can stable close to, don’t be afraid to ask them to keep an eye on your horse and equipment when you’re not around,” she adds.

In addition, both Vicky and Jo Ann agree that the best way to approach these scenarios is to be cautious—competitors

should always keep expensive tack locked up to prevent theft, and, if possible, try to have someone keep an eye on their horse and equip-ment at all times. “At the end of the day, I’m not trying to make people look bad,” says Vicky. “I just want people to be vigilant and be aware.”

Although vandalism can take place at any show, equestrians should not let this deter them from signing up for their next competi-tion. “You don’t have to be afraid to go to shows,” Jo Ann says. “Most of the time, people are honest. Just know that it’s something that happens every once in a while.”

Equestrians who would like to file a complaint about a vandalism occur-rance at a USEF-licensed venue can contact the Federation’s Customer Care Center at 859-258-2472 or customercare@usef.org.

Is Leasing Right for You?

Whether you are looking at cars, apartments, or horses, the decision to buy or lease is a big one. Each option offers a unique set of advantages and disadvantages, making it a complicated

process; however, the aspect of having a living, breathing partner, as in the case of a horse, makes the decision many times more difficult.

While determining whether to buy or lease a car may come down to a simple math equation, it takes a little more research to ascertain the correct course of action when it comes to horses. Taking your finances, experience, and goals into consideration makes the decisions much easier; however, your emotions also come into play.

While buying horses tends to be the more popular decision, leasing offers a very large array of benefits. Essentially, a formal rental agreement between the horse’s owner (lessor) and the interested party (leasee), lets the owner financially distance himself or herself from a horse, while still retaining ownership. Leasing can also be big business, with top show horses in their division being able to take a multitude of riders to top honors. The lessor ultimately retains control over the horse through the contractual agreement.

For a beginner rider, leasing allows the equestrian to have the responsibilities and benefits of owning a horse without the long-term inclinations, almost “testing the waters” to see if horse ownership is right for him or her. In the beginning of a rider’s career, when skills are rapidly developing, it gives the leasee an opportunity to ride and connect with a horse that matches his or her skill level.

When Kathiann Snaden was looking to get back into riding after a 2-1/2 year hiatus, she thought that a partial lease, allowing her to ride two to three days a week, would be just the thing. It took her a few tries to find the right horse, but she found that it was just what she needed. She says, “I have come to enjoy riding again, and I look forward to my few hours each week away from my stay-at-home mom duties.”

Another benefit of a lease agreement is that it allows a rider to see if he or she has a connection with the horse,

without having the stress of ownership. According to Roxanne Cyrankowski, an experienced horsewoman and mother of two horse-crazy girls, “Unfortunately, we haven’t had such great experiences buying horses for my daughters; sometimes, the motivation of selling can hinder the honesty of the seller. If I was going to look for another horse for my daughters, I would definitely go with the lease or lease-with-option-to-buy. I think you can really get to know the horse and stay in contact with the previous owner. Little issues or concerns can be worked out, and if both parties work together, a great relationship can be formed.”

For the more skilled rider, with high aspirations in the show ring, leasing may allow him or her to compete with a more talented horse than one he or she can afford to buy. For instance, a young rider with lofty goals for her last year in the big equitation ring may find that leasing allows her to ride a top-quality equitation horse that can carry her to her aspirations, and then know that she will no longer be respon-sible for the horse when the lease comes to an end. While it may sound obvious, if you are leasing a horse to compete in a specific class, make sure that you are still eligible with a leased horse. For instance, adult amateur riders on the Arabian circuit may find that there are no classes available to them at Nationals if they don’t own a horse.

But, is leasing truly right for you? While it may be sensible and look good on paper, make sure that it feels right too. Realize that it does not give you all of the rights and respon-sibilities of ownership, and that your lease contract reigns supreme over all of your emotions. If your dreams consist of owning a horse for 20 years and watching it through its golden years, leasing will be tough, even if you think you are emotionally ready for the end of your lease period.

Leasing can be a wonderful alternative to buying if it fits into your lifestyle. Be sure before you sign on the dotted line that you thoroughly understand the contract and know what you are getting yourself into. Then, enjoy the many bene-fits—whether it’s a step toward your goals or enjoying horse ownership on a limited-time basis.
