President’s Message

1878

Will Hine, D.D.S.

Putting It All TogetherIn my first two letters, I have spoken

about our professional legacy and paying it forward. How our actions today reflect on this great profession and determine the perception of dentistry in the future. I also told a story about how it is so important to remember those times you received help when it was needed, so you can help and uplift those with whom you come in con-tact. I would like to highlight an opportu-nity coming in April 2015, that will allow all of us to shape our legacy, while we help our fellow citizens.

Indiana will have its own Mission of Mercy (IndianaMOM) two day event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on April 24-25 2015. This project will require over 200 volunteer dentists, 200 hygienists and over 500 other volunteers to provide care for up to 2000 individuals from across the state. Procedures will include diagnostic screen-ings, cleanings, fillings, sealants, periodontal treatment, root canals, oral surgery as well as health screenings, medications, and instruc-tion on home care. An important aspect of this event is to educate patients on proper

oral health care for the entire family, as well as increase the knowledge of patients on how to access follow up and continued care. Our own IDDS Past President Dr. Sue Germain is the Chair of this important event for our district and state.

This does not minimize the already great work you all are already doing for those who are in need. Dateline is filled with stories of dentists setting up care for our military, ways to donate to the IDDS Foundation, information on volunteering for Donated Dental Services, etc. As a profes-sion, we need to be at the forefront of the solution to this growing problem of unmet dental needs. There is no one right answer to getting people the treatment they need but can’t afford, and Indiana MOM is one piece of the puzzle, along with the great work we already are doing. One thing that a large event like this will do; however, is increase awareness to the general public, policy mak-ers and legislators of the need for dental care. It will also point out that our profession is best able to develop solutions.

So, how can you help? There will be plenty of information in the coming months in Dateline, as well as the IDA Journal and website. You can visit www.IndianaMOM.org for updated information, ways to donate finan-cially, as well as the location for you and your staff to sign up to volunteer. This is a perfect way to help those in need while we advocate for quality dental care for all of Indiana’s citi-zens. Our legacy is in our own hands, and pay-ing it forward by volunteering at this event and others will go a long way in showing the power of our profession in addressing the dental needs of the underserved.

Executive Director Summary

Board of Directors Summary Subs? Associates? Are you thinking of adding an associate? Are you thinking of

retiring? Maybe we can help! Are you in need of someone to substitute for you when

you are out of the office for vacation, or you have had a medical emergency of some kind? Turmoil and tragedy happen to every-one. When you are in need of someone to help you serve your patients, IDDS has a list of associates who are willing to sub, so contact us for more information.

This is a member benefit available to members only, and is another example of your colleagues in organized dentistry helping each other.

Contact us at 317-471-8131 or [email protected]

Lastly, I want to point out a couple of upcoming events. The President’s Fall Workshop is on September 11. The topic will be the work of our very important Peer Review Committee. Many of you may not know exactly what this group does and how they can help resolve difficult situations as they arise. I also want the com-mittee members to discuss some of the more common things they see in their work to help us all in our practices. We also have the Fall General Membership Meeting October 1, and the election bal-lots will also be mailed on that date. A special thanks to all of you who supported the IDDS Foundation Golf Outing, and Dr. Doug Spaulding for your hard work in organizing the event.

• ThankedDr. Wayne Kinney for his service as Chair of the Peer Review Committee. Dr. Kinney’s term expires at the end of this year, and Dr. Katy Patton will serve as Chair of IDDS Peer Review Committee.

• Thanks! to the IDDS Foundation for its fundraising projects.

Thank you to all of those sponsors and volunteers who made the IDDS Foundation’s Golf Tournament a wonderful event! Your support is very much appreciated.

Next year is Roster time!! New pictures will be taken at the Fall GMM, and the roster will be published in the summer of 2015. So, if your practice or home information has changed, now’s the time to let us know so that we can make sure that we keep the database current.

Thankyou!— Carolyn Hansen

• John Stone, DDS single handedly started Gennesaret’s Dental Program in 1989.

• In 2002, due to an overwhelming need for dental care for very low income people, Gennesaret opened a Dental & Wellness Clinic in the Blue Triangle Residence Hall.

• In 2011, Connect 2 Help recorded the top unmet healthcare need in our community was dental care.

• In 2013, the GFC Dental Clinic recorded 3,100 patient visits and served 630 people. Of these patients, 117 (19%) were homeless; 252 (40%) were age 55+. The GFC Dental Clinic provided nearly 100 patients with dentures and partials.

• The majority of GFC’s dental patients have not had adequate access to dental care; as a result, many require dentures or partials to live a healthy and productive life.

• Were it not for Gennesaret’s dental clinic, many low income people in our community would simply lack access to dental care.

IDDS Foundation IDDS Foundation extends

Congratulations to Board Member, Amber Banks of Veros Dental, who had Brooklyn Faith on July 12. Both Mom, Dad and Baby Brooklyn are doing fine.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the IDDS Foundation Golf Tournament outstanding! We had the most gorgeous weather, and 84 players who enjoyed the outing. Special thanks to Dr. Doug Spaulding for being our Chair again this year, and to his wife, Diane Spaulding, who always works so hard to make this event suc-cessful. Dr. Spaulding graciously puts this tournament together, and is a very entertaining host at the dinner afterwards—he entertains the guests and is worth the price of admission just to attend the dinner!! Our Gold Sponsors were: BMO Harris

Bank, CAMP Laboratory, CareCredit, Commerce National Bank, IDA Insurance Services, Indiana Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, and Stock Yards Bank & Trust.

The Foundation’s Golf Tournament is its only annual event, and it raises the funds nec-essary for the Foundation’s phi-lanthropy and scholarship efforts. Special thanks to Mark Engle, Kevin Megli, Jennifer Wherly and Jessica Gilha from Commerce National Bank. Commerce National Bank underwrote the costs of cash prizes for our den-tists. Winning this year’s $250 Prize was Dr. Carol Walters and the Grand Prize of $1,000 went to Dr. John Pasicznyk. Congratulations and thanks to all those who supported and partici-pated.

AN INTERVIEW with Thad Miller, ddsmatch.com

Thad Miller, dental industry leader and founder of ddsmatch.com, envisioned a better way for dentists to make practice transitions by pairing technology with a human touch to produce a professional and exacting match.

Q: You’ve made a career in the dental industry--what excites you about this industry?Thad Miller: Dentistry is exciting because it really is an incredible op-

-ing to discuss transitions. It may be surprising to established dentist to know potential buyers are interested in a range of locations from small town to big city and everything in between. It’s exciting to bring people together because dentistry is still a relationship business; the human connection matters.

Q: What led you to strike out on your own?TM: With my 17 years of industry experience, I was consistently

and that led to the creation of ddsmatch.com. The concept is based on relationships, technology and making dreams come true, whether that be retirement or private practice ownership.

Q: What makes you great at what you do?TM: My secret? I take time with dentists, both sellers and buyers, to understand their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities, so we can easily and effectively transition their legacy in the form of patients, staff and practice. Also, ddsmatch is one of the only business broker-age companies offering third-party appraisal for the fair and substanti-ated value of the practice.

Q: What motivates you?TM: I’m motivated by a job well done, simple as that. While I work to close the sale of practice, I also have the satisfaction of watching that practice continue to serve its patients, staff and community.

TM: I’ve been in the industry for 17 years in many capacities, and bring a business perspective to the table. Over the years, I’ve used my business background and dental experience to create consistent success in acquisitions and placing people in the right opportunities.

Q: You spend the majority of your time serving dentists in Indiana, Kentucky and the Cincinnati area. What’s the environ-ment like in those locations?TM: Like many places, these locations have a number of dentists that have put off retiring due to current economic conditions. So, if you are on those areas, I feel that if 2-3 years is your ideal timeframe to

transition, now is the perfect time to start the planning process and meet with us.

Regardless of what your timeline may be, there are plenty of highly skilled, personable and successful young dentists looking for op-portunities. We have transitioned 50 practices since 2010, in small towns like Leo and Huntingburg, in harder-hit areas like Anderson and Kokomo and in suburbs of cities like Carmel, Jeffersonville and Zionsville.

Q: So how can a dentist considering a practice sale better his/her chances in the market?TM: I tell dentists to continue to focus on growing the practice and serving the patients at a high level. Don’t limit your practice. A good

transition.

Q: What role do you play in the transition?TM: Ultimately, I represent the seller, but work to guide the buyer to a team of professionals to foster a positive transition. I utilize valua-tion specialists, attorneys and accountants to assist when needed, and of course, at ddsmatch we provide the website with a search-able database and our vast network of relationships to achieve the

broker and will be able to handle the sale of the dental building and the land for my clients.

Q: Your clients have advantages when they work with you. What gives you that edge?TM: We give our clients an edge by staying focused on their needs. Our goal is “to successfully connect a dentist’s present with their future.” We take our broad spectrum of dental relationships, pair it with our data-rich, searchable website and top it all off with “The Trusted Transition Process.” It works and people are achiev-ing their dreams of retirement and practice ownership. Contact me

service to you.
