THE OPEN ROADFor many equestrians in the Northeast, there is no better feeling each spring than hitching up the trailer, loading up your horse, and hitting the road. Whether you are headed to a clinic, trail ride, or horse show, spring brings the beginning of a new riding season and a sense of freedom as you are headed out with your equine partner.

In this year’s Dateline: Calendar Guide to Equine Events special edition, we have over 900 different events for you to choose from.

But what if you aren’t quite prepared for the season ahead? In “On the Road Again,” Karen Baril takes a look at how to ensure that your trailer is road worthy and ready to travel. If you are the one holding yourself back, turn to Pamela Mansfield’s “Back in the Saddle” to help you find the skills for overcoming your fears and feel comfortable back on your horse.

Where will your riding season take you?

Showing gives horse-minded folks a chance to socialize. You feel gratified when you head home with ribbons. But competing can be a stressful game for both horses and riders, especially if you are unprepared.

1 Familiarize your horse at home to things they will encounter at the show. Horses are creatures of habit. The

more the show environment reflects things they are familiar with at home, the more relaxed they can be. If you show infrequently, do not wait until the day of a competition to ask your horse new questions. Establish routines for grooming and tacking up that keep him relaxed at home, then use them when in an unfamiliar environment.

2 Pay attention to your horse so he is responsive to you. Learn to pay attention to your horse at home so

you can gauge his mood and attention level at the show grounds. Understand how to keep his attention by keeping him on your aids. Do not wait until the day of a show and hope you will figure it out on the spot.

3 Familiarize your horse with the show grounds prior to show time. Make things as easy for the horse as

possible. If you are showing for a weekend, try to arrive the day before the event so that the horse has time to settle in. A long trailer haul is stressful and the horse is going to be tired. Give him a chance to rest. Then show him around. Walk around every arena, ask the horse to stand quietly for a while by the in-gates and show him the concession and judges’ stands.

4 Manage your horse's excitement level during the test; don't wear him out beforehand. I often see riders at shows

longeing their nervous or hyper horses for hours before their classes in the hope of calming them down by wearing them out. Then they wonder why their horse is too tired to put in a good performance. A better solution is to learn to ride the horse forward into your hand so you always have a connection with him. Without this connection, it is difficult to have your horse on the aids or using your aids to recreate rhythm and relaxation if he gets nervous.

5 Make checklists of the things you and the horse will need. Use them when you pack to be sure nothing is left behind.

Anxious riders make anxious horses. Create a routine for your show preparation. Use them when you pack to be sure nothing is left behind.

6 Visualize your ride in advance. Walk the ring or course if possible. I like to visualize my ride in advance. When I am

going to ride a particular dressage test, I visualize the test before I get on my horse. I “see” the direc-tion I will be traveling for each section. I also use meditation to help me relax as I visualize, which also helps me stay relaxed. If show rules allow you to walk the ring or a course before a class, take advantage of this opportunity.

7 Relax and focus. Practice relaxing and focusing before you get to the show grounds. Practice focus and concentra-

tion at home to the point where you can ignore everything else happening around you. Your brain can only be in one place at a time.

8 Ride at a level where you are comfortable and confident. I see many riders whose showing ambitions

are beyond the level they are riding. If you are not prepared to ride at a particular level, you will be scared and nervous attempting some-thing you do not know how to do.

9 Identify your goals and reasons for showing. Horse shows are just games people play and there are many

reasons for playing. You may show as a way to benchmark your progress as a rider or to teach a young horse new skills. Being with horsey friends may be your primary motivation for attending shows, while others may compete for personal glory or to build professional credentials. Be clear about your goals and be aware that other people have different agendas. Maintaining a healthy perspective on competing is one of the best ways to tame show jitters.

Be objective about why you are showing and what your personal goals are regardless of whether or not that means taking a ribbon home. At the end of the day, the best place to be is on the back of a horse. Don't let any one event spoil your enjoyment of your horse.

POINTS OF INTEREST

For Joe and Kathleen Camp, keeping their horses happy and healthy is their number one concern. In this quick read, Joe outlines the steps that they have taken to eliminate stress in their eight horses’ lives, allowing them to live as close to their natural setting as possible.

And the results? They have never had a case of colic, founder, stran-gles, ulcers, or insulin resistance. Their horses also do not have any of the vices that many other equines suffer from: cribbing, kicking, weaving, pacing, or biting.

BOTTOM LINE: Whether you are looking for a complete lifestyle change for your horse or simply looking for small ways to help him, this book can help you to reduce or even eliminate stress.

Horses & Stress: Eliminating the Root Cause of Most Health, Hoof, and Behavior ProblemsBY JOE CAMP, 132 pages, paperback, 14 Hands Press (14HandsPress.com), 2013, $9.95.

Every time you get on a horse you make a choice to ride and do what you love. But any serious injury or fall can shatter that confidence or sway competitive goals. While there is always risk

involved in horseback riding, an accident can mean overcoming psycho-logical or physical barriers. We found two riders who did just that, and spoke with a mental skills coach who helps riders employ visualization, planning, and positive thinking to get back in the saddle.

The choice to get back in the saddle requires a great deal of “mind over matter” and mental preparation. Tonya Johnston, a mental skills coach in California and author of Inside Your Ride, helps riders gain control over their fears and succeed again in the show ring. While most of her work is to strengthen the confidence of an actively competing rider, she has good advice for confronting fears and concerns, especially after a fall or an accident.

Put Your Coping Skills to Work“Your coping skills and your support system are a big part of how resilient you’re going to be,” Tonya says. Don’t be afraid to ask for help to get back to riding, whether it means having friends or coaches ride with you or work with you for a while. She advises to “be kind to yourself, rather than feeling stupid and frustrated. The ability is in you—nobody has taken that away. You just need to wake it up.”

Acknowledge That the Past is in the Past“One really important point to remember is that the past is out of our control. You’re not going to change the past. Understanding why the accident happened is in your control. Think through what happened and what you’re going to do instead. Knowledge is power. The more understanding you have about what happened and why, the more you can set your goals.” Focus Before You Get in the SaddleTonya recommends a pre-ride routine that involves using visu-alization skills. In your mind, imagine yourself getting on and riding the horse and doing what you were already doing well. Don’t just hop on and see how things go. “Do all your prepara-tion on the ground so when you’re riding you have created positive expectations for your mind and body. In your mind revisit your best rides before you get on the horse.”

The goal is to reclaim your knowledge and muscle memory without thinking about it so much when you’re actu-ally riding. “The recipe is different for everyone. Remember what it feels like to ride more effortlessly.” With the riding coming back to you more naturally, “you are more able to ride off reflexes and instinct,” she says. Instead of riding defensively you want to get back into the groove as quickly as possible.

Examine Your Motivation There’s a saying that begs the obvious answer, “To ride or not to ride. What was the question?” However, coping with the level of anxiety you may feel about riding again “takes good, positive motivation,” Tonya says. “Every time you put your foot in the stirrup you’re making a choice. The motiva-tion to ride has won out over your fear. Point that effort and adrenaline in a positive direction.”

Have Small, Manageable GoalsAssign yourself a goal each time you ride. Tonya says, “For example, you can make your goal trotting just one time around the arena.” Then when you have that under your belt, have another achievable goal so that every time you ride you feel like you are making positive progress, even if it’s just keeping your eyes up and not looking down. “A simple goal can be empowering. Have a plan. Then you can say, I did well today; this will lead to confidence. Tracking goals over time is really powerful.”P

mollie krumlaw-smith (middle) enjoys a ride with friends.

EnDurancE: mollie’s storymollie Krumlaw-smith, an ohio-based competitive trail and endurance rider since the 1980s, was at the top of her game and in peak physical condition when a car accident shattered her pelvis, fractured most of the left side of her body, and damaged many of her internal organs. she spent the next three months in the hospital and eventually had to learn to walk all over again. While the then 25-year-old’s impending goals for international competition were dashed, within 10 months she was able to sit on a horse again, and returned to riding within 12 months.

the initial challenge for mollie was getting past the idea of having to spend another long period of time in the hospital should she be hurt again. Plus, she was crooked in the saddle because of the way she had healed. But there was no question she would ride and compete.

“if it’s something you love to do, do it—life is short. if you’re incapacitated get psychological help. you have to strengthen your body before you start riding again, because if you have to react, you can’t when you’re not physically fit.” Giving yourself credit for small achievements is important. For her kind of riding, just the ability to ride up and down hills again was a success.

“a lot of mental and physical healing has to take place. you need to give yourself the tools you need to go forward,” she advises. For her, this meant taking some dressage lessons in the ring to help improve her balance. she found that starting out with simple goals, short rides, and the even footing and added sense of security of riding in an arena, helped her get back to the rugged terrain and fast-paced rides she excelled at before her accident.

she eventually employed her skills to recover from three more incidences. in the late 90s she fell off and broke her pelvis again, but it was a cleaner fracture requiring a shorter hospital stay. then she shattered a shoulder colliding with a herd of deer during a ride. By the end of 2008 she needed surgery to further fix her damaged pelvis, including a total hip replacement. she resumed her competitive trail riding six months to the day after her last surgery and returned to endurance riding this year.

Her first competition after her second pelvic fracture was a 25-mile ride, which she won, barely missing a beat in what was a good year, but maybe pushing herself a little too hard. “it hurt trotting down the hills, and i thought maybe this is not such a good idea.”

mollie cautions that physical therapists are not there to help you resume the sport of horseback riding, “they are just supposed to help you function again as a member of society. you have to get outside of their zone and do things that make you stronger as a rider.” For her this meant working on the flexibility and elasticity of her hip flexors. “it’s amazing how much you lose. the faster you can safely get back on, the better for less overall muscle atrophy.”

Western Pleasure: sandy’s storysandy owen, a long-time western pleasure and equitation rider from Massachusetts, was suddenly “torqued” in the saddle when her quiet quarter Horse mare spooked after another horse in the arena lunged at them. the resulting injury was life-threatening because of excessive internal bleeding. Her pelvis split, and sandy learned she had severe osteo-porosis. she required nearly a year of healing, gradually moving from a wheelchair to her own two legs, all the while taking medication to regenerate healthy bone. Her concerned family was lining up options for placing her beloved horse, but for sandy, “riding was a life-style. i was more afraid that if i didn’t have a horse i wouldn’t have something to get better for.”

after being stabilized then “med flighted” to Mass General Hospital, sandy “didn’t even think of riding for the first month. Just the everyday stuff was monumental.” Progressing from wheelchair to walking on her own, she says, “i couldn’t hold my torso up straight. all my upper body strength was gone. “

But eventually there was a glimmer of hope. Her surgeon had reassembled countless injured rodeo and Calgary stampede riders, and “he was very matter of fact about how well he thought he’d fixed me.” His self-confidence rubbed off on her. she trusted her horse and knew her smooth gait so well, “there was never any doubt in my mind that if i healed i would ride again.” By the end of 12 months she sat in the saddle again for the first time, assisted by her husband and her trainer. in 18 months she was back to riding, and looking forward to the show ring again. When she realized that cantering would be out of the question, she petitioned aqHa to compete at the walk-trot level, and has since enjoyed a support system among fellow riders in her club. “once you get past doing what you can’t do anymore and do what you can do, you actually enjoy it more.”

a lot of credit goes to her horse, as well. “i’m lucky i had abbie. Who knows if i would have resumed riding without her.” she knows her limitations when it comes to the type of horses she can ride, needing one with little hock action and bounce. after a few years of success in the show ring, her mare had to be retired, so sandy is starting all over again. she looked very carefully to find the right match. “it’s sobering to have a new young horse who is very different and much more athletic.”

While both sandy and Mollie will always have some level of pain, they are doing what they love and have figured out all the physical and psychological aids to getting back in the saddle. “it got to the point where it wasn’t on my mind so much anymore after a couple of years,” says sandy. “i realized i had limits, and once i got to a plateau of where i felt confident, i didn’t think of it anymore. the most important thing is to have fun.”

Have a Social NetworkEmploy your social network by reading and watching other riders. See what you can take away that could be helpful to you. Have a solid horse and rider accompany you or have good ground help when you ride.

Be in Control, Wherever You CanIf you have a horse that tends to be fresh, you can make horsemanship decisions that help you manage that, like turning him out before you ride. Be conscious of things in your riding that you control and don’t control. Acknowledge that you don’t want to spend every ride scanning bushes for unexpected distractions. “You don’t control the environment or the weather. Horses are living, breathing creatures and you want to be in harmony with that and not be in fear of the unknown. You can control your focus, breathing, and getting the horse forward, being very clear with the aids. You can control your energy level. You might need to sharpen up your energy while riding at home, where we have a tendency to be more lackadaisical. Or, if you’re in a show setting, find ways to relax and let go of some of the extra energy you may feel.

“Research what makes you more focused, more ener-getic, and more psyched,” Tonya says. “You may find being prepared, arriving earlier at the barn, and having a solid routine will help you feel ready for a positive experience.”

the choice to get back in the saddle after a fall requires a great deal of “mind over matter.” By acknowledging that the past is in the past and out of your control, you will be better able to move forward.

PRE-SEASON TRAILER CHECKA pre-season trailer check, says Duhamel, should include the following:

» Inspect, clean, and re-pack axle bearings.

» Inspect brake drums or hubs and replace the seals.

» Inspect and clean the bearing races. » Inspect brakes for irregular wear

and test brake function. New trailers should have brakes checked after the first 200 miles and at 3,000 mile intervals or yearly thereafter.

» Inspect tires for wear and check tire pressure (including spare tire). You should check tire pres-sure before every ride. Be sure to check when the tires are “cold” or before you go anywhere. Pressure recommendations differ between tire manufacturers, but should be listed on the tire’s sidewall.

» Inspect and torque lug nuts.» Inspect wheels for cracks, dents,

or excessive rust.» Inspect safety chains.» Inspect and lubricate coupler.» Inspect and lubricate jacks.» Inspect frame and floor boards

for rust or rot.» Inspect suspension: springs,

shackle bolts, equalizers. » Inspect and lubricate door hinges

and latches.» Inspect all wiring and test all

trailer lights. You should get into the habit of testing lights before every road trip.

» Inspect and test safety breakaway switch and battery.

Once you have your trailer’s bill of health, you’ll breathe easier, but be sure to perform pre-travel checks as well. “Every time you travel,” Duhamel advises, “it’s important to be sure the lights and brakes are working properly. Tires must be properly inflated and inspected for dry-rot and tread wear.” Duhamel also recommends checking coupler lubrication and all traveling lights.

“Make a visual inspection for loose or broken trailer parts and if some-thing doesn’t look right, get it checked before you travel,” Duhamel cautions.

An important element of trailer maintenance includes getting into the habit of cleaning the trailer inside and out. As you clean, it’s a good time to make your visual inspection. “We often find bee and wasp nests in and

on trailers,” says Duhamel. “The nests are a common occurrence in unused trailers or trailers stored outside. There is no method we’ve found to stop insects from building their nests, but a regular inspection and cleaning is a good way to keep them out of the trailer. It’s important to check the interior and the exterior for nests. We’ve seen bees and wasps build nests not only in the horse stalls, but also under the gooseneck and under-carriage of trailers.”

FLOOR MAINTENANCEFailure of even just one component of the trailer’s floor, whether it’s from rust, corrosion, or attachment failure can—and has—caused catastrophic injury to horses. While a visual inspection of the floor is helpful, it is

2014 Dateline | EQUINEJOURNAL.COM 17

You’ve got your horse ready for show season; he’s buffed, polished, current on all his vaccinations and he’s in good physical shape. But, is your trailer ready for show season, too? The safety and well-being of your horse depends on it. And just like your horse, small problems addressed early on are your best defense against a breakdown, or worse, an accident.

“When you’re showing, you want to focus on your horse, not your trailer,” says Mike Duhamel, CEO of The Trailer Depot in Northford, CT. “Taking care of trailer maintenance before the show season begins allows you to focus on the show.” On the other hand, waiting until the last minute might lead to discovering a problem moments before you’re ready to hit the road.

no guarantee that the floor’s integrity is intact. In fact, it’s almost impos-sible for the average horse owner to recognize a hidden problem.

Keep your floors in good shape by sweeping manure and bedding out after every use. Hose out any urine and rinse your floors at least once a month, depending on the trailer manufacturer’s recommendations. At the very least, Duhamel recommends thoroughly cleaning the trailer inside and out four times a year. Consider power washing the interior floor with a product designed for use on your floor material. And remember that even aluminum floors need attention.

“It’s a common misconception that aluminum floors don’t require inspection,” says Duhamel. “It’s true; aluminum is low maintenance, but not no maintenance. Horse urine is highly acidic and corrosive to aluminum. If left on the surface, the urine will eat away at the aluminum,

making the floor brittle and dangerous for horses to stand on.”

Driving TipsYour horse is your most precious cargo. “Drivers should always practice safe driving habits,” says Duhamel. “Maintain a safe speed and distance, especially when hauling horses.” Do your best to drive smoothly—that means taking the turns easy and braking and starting smoothly.

Adjust your speed depending on the condi-tions. Rain, snow, ice, or dense fog will impact your ability to stop or turn safely. If at all possible, choose to stay home if driving conditions are not ideal. Stick to the right or middle lane on highways to allow other vehicles to safely pass you. Drive defensively—watch for brake lights in front and try to anticipate what other drivers will do so you won’t have to make sudden moves.

Use the appropriate towing vehicle. Never

exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity even if you’re only traveling a “little bit down the road.” It’s risky to over-load your vehicle even if the road conditions are good, never mind if there’s a need for a sudden stop. If you had to swerve, you could be faced with the chilling experience of your trailer driving your vehicle. That’s a situation you want to avoid at all costs. Check with your vehicle’s manufacturer to verify that your fully loaded trailer does not exceed your towing capacity.

As horse owners we need to be in the habit of scheduling regular check-ups on our trailers just as we do with our horses. “Regular inspec-tion and maintenance ensure that you’ll make it to the show safe, and have a good time while you’re there,” says Duhamel. “And a well main-tained trailer can last for decades, providing miles of worry-free trans-port for your animals.”

m3

[ABOVE] A sturdy floor is one of the most impor-tant safety factors of a trailer. Keep your floors in good shape by sweeping manure and bedding out after every use. [BELOW] Safe driving practices will ensure you and your horse arrive at your destination in one piece.

Travel TipsTraveling with your horse should be fun, not stressful. Here are a few tips to make your next trip worry-free:

m Teach your horse to load into the trailer calmly. Be sure he comes off as calmly as he goes on. if it’s a battle, consult a professional for help. Your horse should also stand at the trailer calmly, safely tied. remember to park on a level spot to make unloading easy.

m Pack a well-stocked equine and human first aid kit. Keep emergency contacts in your cell phone as well as on a separate paper in your first aid kit. Post emer-gency numbers in your vehicle as well just in case you are incapacitated. m Be sure your trailer is equipped with a fire extinguisher.

m If the trip is long, offer your horse a drink every few hours or so. Plan on traveling no more than about eight to 10 hours a day.

m Plan your route in advance. invest in a GPS that will offer alternate routes if you encounter a traffic jam. Check highway rules. Some highways limit access to passenger cars only.

m While at the show, protect your horse from infec-tious disease by following a good sanitation program for his buckets and water. never let your horse use a communal water trough at horse shows.

m Pack extra halters and leads, rope, a pocket knife, duct tape, baling twine, and wire cutters.
